1 limited Information A Cancer Care Ministry Coming to, Early
2 Coming in January 2019 The Journey of Hope,, SC will provide pastors and ministry leaders with the tools, training and support to raise up cancer care ministries in our local churches and surrounding communities We will begin collecting names of those interested in October 2018 On Monday, January 6, 2019, and for seven subsequent Mondays, we will train willing workers to become Cancer Care Ministers. What Is Cancer Care Minister Group Training? 1 Cancer Care Leadership Training is an opportunity for pastors and Christian leaders to come together to learn about the need, the vision and the process to provide hope and encouragement to people living with cancer. It is a two-day immersion experience that investigates who and what the heart of cancer care ministry is. Cancer care ministry is a ministry of hope (Job 11:18-19). This ministry is bathed in prayer, involves counsel, visits and assistance to the patient and the caregiver. It is centered in Christ bringing God's hope to Cancer patients and their caregivers, family and friends. This type of ministry requires a sympathetic, empathetic individual, with an understanding of the impact of cancer on this society, how people react to it and how God has called His people to respond to this dreaded enemy. Above all, it requires us to have within ourselves a sincere and unfeigned hope that we can take to those in need. A ministry training program, such as the Journey of Hope approach, was created because of the significant need in our nation, as well as in the body of Christ, to care for those dealing with cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, over 12 million people in the United States are living with or have been personally diagnosed with cancer. Every year, 1.5 million more people receive a cancer diagnosis. You do the math of the possibilities of cancer in the pews in your own church. The potential impact is indescribable 1 A Group consists of persons (preferably 12)
3 Each minute Class will be governed by the following: 15 minutes Leader will pray to open session, then, review last lesson and introduce new materials (lesson) from the Minister s Workbook minutes Watch an appropriate video (role playing or actual circumstance) 30 minutes Leader presents additional lesson content and reading materials 30 minutes Follow-up exercise and guided discussion 5 minutes Closing prayer???????? fellowship and refreshments (Acts 2:42)
4 Schedule and Content for training and releasing new Ministers 2 Class 1: The Need Is Great 12 I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. 13 For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength. Understand what makes cancer unique. Philippians 4:12-13 Learn about the potential of a cancer care ministry Begin to grow through awareness Get to know the hearts of your group members Class 2: Know Your Enemy 10 A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on all of God s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. 12 For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore, put on every piece of God s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil, then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Ephesians 6:10-13 Understand what cancer is and how it is treated Learn about its impact on the body, soul and spirit Look at the role that faith, hope and love play in lives of those impacted by cancer Class 3: The Do s and Don ts 16 Always be joyful. 17 Never stop praying. 18 Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. 19 Do not stifle the Holy Spirit. 20 Do not scoff at prophecies, 21 but test everything that is said. Hold on to what is good. 22 Stay away from every kind of evil. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-22 Learn about the do s and don ts of a cancer care ministry Understand the heart behind the tips to understand why they are the do s and don t Realize the impact that simple changes can make and how to develop better intuition Apply all these things to past experiences to learn from them 2 All Scripture used from the Holy Bible, New Living Translation, copyright 1996, 2004, 2015 by Tyndale House Foundation. 5 Class 4: A Marvelous Calling 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Acts 1:8 (NLT) Learn what it means to be a ministering person Understand the biblical calling to cancer care ministry Reflect on the past, and God s calling for your future Class 5: Overcoming Fear If you ll hold on to me for dear life, says GOD, I ll get you out of any trouble. I ll give you the best of care if you ll only get to know and trust me. Call me and I ll answer, be at your side in bad times; I ll rescue you, then throw you a party. I ll give you a long life, give you a long drink of salvation! Psalm 91:14-15 (MSG) Understand the role that fear, dread, anxiety and stress have on those impacted by cancer Learn how to overcome personal fear to minister courage to others Recognize the full measure of challenges that come with this ministry Be able to identify the styles of helping and implement their most beneficial characteristic Class 6: Caring for Caregivers 23 Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. 24 Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ. Colossians 3:23-24 Understand the roles that caregivers play Identify the challenges that they face (daily, weekly and for the long-term) Learn to identify, help, and minister to the caregiver Class 7: Practical Ministry 22 But don t just listen to God s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. 23 For if you listen to the word and don t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. 24 You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. 25 But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it. James 1:22-25 Learn about practical elements that can be directly applied through cancer care ministry Understand the hearts behind these practical tips and how they can be built upon Practice responding to challenging questions (by both the patient and care giver) that may be faced in this ministry
6 Class 8: The Least of These 3 35 For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. 36 I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me. 37 Then these righteous ones will reply, Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? 39 When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you? 40 And the King will say, I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me! Matthew 25:35-40 (NLT) Understand the principles of serving and ministering to Christ by helping those who are suffering from cancer. Recognize the importance of treating patients and caregivers with dignity Take the step from training into ministry Until we complete our inaugural classes begin in January 2109, and if you re interested in beginning A Cancer Care Ministry in at your church, please contact Mrs. Connie J. Singleton, (770) or connie.singleton@ctca-hope.com or the website: (re: training schedule) 3 The least of these refers to those in a variety of needy situations. They include the hungry, thirsty, impoverished, sick, and imprisoned. What is surprising about the least of these is that our service is ultimately not to the poor, but to Christ Himself.
Matthew 25: I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.
Matthew 25: 31-46 31 When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people
