2 Page 2 We are Lutherans We are the church together We are the church for the sake of the world This is is the theme of the ELCA and the topic of our adult Sunday School Class. We are discovering just what it is that brings us to worship and just what it is that keeps us coming and why we do it Our Bishop of the ELCA, Elizabeth Eaton writes: We are a church first. And at the heart of what we do is worship, and the heart of that is Jesus Christ, We are church for the sake of the world. We weren t redeemed to just think good thoughts of Jesus Christ. We re supposed to be out there, helping to bring about the abundant life. And to us, here at St. Peter, we are definitely the church together. I know that in this transition time, we are overwhelmed by being without a pastor, overwhelmed by a dwindling membership and we wonder just what is going to happen! But my friends, we aren't here because of our strength. We are here because God has called us here! God has gathered us! It's not something we do it's what God has done! Done and is doing! The only reason we are here is because God loved us and loves us still! We have a message we have a purpose we have a special gift! We love because God loves us! We worship because God loves us! We are the church together because God loves us! ~ Carolyn Olson

St. Peter has a collection box in the Narthex for non-perishable food items (that children can easily prepare for themselves). World Communion Sunday is a celebration observed on the first Sunday of October that promotes Christian unity and ecumenical cooperation. The tradition originated in 1933, and is now celebrated worldwide. In previous years, St. Peter has participated in this celebration with an exchange of Communion vessels with our Carlsbad ecumenical-partners. This year, in cooperation with these partner congregations, we have agreed to an exchange of people. Members of St. Peter are invited to worship at one of our ecumenical-partner churches on this Sunday: Carlsbad Mennonite: 9:30am First Christian: 10:30 am First Presbyterian: 10:00 am and Grace Episcopal: 8:30 am or 10:30 am Food Drive for Jonah s House Sunday October 4 Jonah's House in in need of canned and other non-perishable food items. Registration forms are in the Narthex! See Jean Vinka for details! 2015 Missional Gatherings - All Invited! Border Conference Saturday, November 14: 10:00 am 12:00 pm St. Mark (Roswell) This year's Missional Gatherings in each conference will help us explore our theme for the year, "Many Voices, One Song." The church is made of many voices, and each voice is as distinctive as the person or the community that sings it. The wonder of the project is how the voices all come together to make one song. But really, the voices don't make the song; the song invites the voices to take up the project of making God's music. That is because the song is God's-God's love song for this world loved so deeply and always unfolding in Jesus' good news. We come together this fall to listen for the song and join our voices to the "Gospel music" God is making in the world. *St Peter Members: If you would like to attend, please RSVP to the church office to submit your registration. Also, if you would like to attend, but need a ride, PLEASE contact the church office.

6 Page 6 Bishop Eaton visits Madagascar Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton is leading a group of ELCA officials on a visit to Madagascar this week. The party arrived in the capital Antananarivo on September 1 and will be in the country through September 6. This will be Bishop Eaton's first visit to Madagascar and her first opportunity to meet President Rakoto Endor Modeste, Malagasy Lutheran Church President. The meeting is important not only because it gives our Presiding Bishop an opportunity to experience first-hand the ministries of this vibrant church, but also because maintaining strong relations between ELCA and our Malagasy sisters and brothers will be important as the church prepares to elect a new President and General Secretary a little over a year from now. Bishop Eaton's short visit will not permit her to visit our Rocky Mountain Synod companion synods in the north of Madagascar. A highlight of the trip is that she has been invited to preach at an ordination service at Fandriana on the final day of her travel. Since the Malagasy Lutheran Church does not ordain women, this act of accompaniment has powerful symbolic significance for the church in Madagascar and for showing recognition of the vitality and integrity of our relationship. It reminds us how different practices and theological emphases are overcome in the good news of Jesus which we celebrate together. Please mention this trip in your worship liturgies this coming Sunday and let us offer prayers for safe travel and a strengthening of our partnership with sisters and brothers in Madagascar. Yours in faith, Bishop Jim Gonia 'Confronting Racism' webcast now available How do we talk about race, systemic racism and becoming a more inclusive church? Watch the webcast of the Aug. 6 conversation as ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth A. Eaton and William B. Horne II, a member of the ELCA Church Council, discuss the complexity and implications of racism. This page includes many resources to support this important conversation in your congregation. 7 Page 7 Life insurance is important at every stage Many of life s different stages offer challenges and rewards whether you re starting out on your own, raising a family, focusing on your career, or preparing for a rewarding retirement. However, while each life stage is unique, it s important to make sure your loved ones are cared for financially at each stage along the way. Regular life insurance check-ups with a financial professional are important as you progress through the stages to help ensure proper protection. Early career Surprisingly, when you re young and at your healthiest is the ideal time to get your first life insurance contract. Your family and your financial future are counting on you continuing to earn a living. Because you are young and healthy, a basic policy may be the most affordable depending on your needs. Life insurance will help ensure your family is cared for if you re not there. Growing families (and income) Young children at home can bring untold joy to a family. This idyllic picture is something that can be easily shaken if an untimely death takes a toll on a family. Term life insurance can offer affordable coverage for you and your loved ones. Term insurance is easily enhanced with optional riders to help ensure your protection stays adequate as your family grows and you continue to advance your earning potential. Legacy and retirement planning As you enter your peak earning years and get closer to retirement, you will likely face more health risks. Converting from term coverage to permanent life insurance is a way to help ensure lifelong financial protection. Permanent insurance is guaranteed to be with you as long as you live as long as you continue to pay the premium and your provider stays in business. This is one of the many reasons you should look for an organization with a track record of financial strength and stability to work with. These types of permanent insurance contracts also allow you to begin to plan your legacy and give you the option to include a favorite charity or cause as a beneficiary to help make sure your generosity lives on. Peak Earning Years (And Peak Taxes Paid) Life insurance can be a valuable tool for protecting your assets, life and family. However it may also be used for tax advantaged asset growth and a supplemental retirement income stream. A professional financial representative can help you plan for your maximum earnings years and guide you in ways to optimize your coverage to minimize your tax burden and maximize your protection. Retirement As you enter your later years, you are now ready to implement your retirement strategy. Continuing to help ensure you have the right financial plan in place to meet your needs is critical. These years are also among the best times to work on your multigenerational planning and ensuring your children (and grandchildren) are taken care of in your absence. Life insurance, like life itself, has many stages and options for you to consider. It is an invaluable tool for a family to help make sure that those you leave behind are financially protected and can also have many additional benefits to you and your loved ones beyond the basic death benefits. Take a moment to consider what kind of legacy you want to leave your loved ones when you re gone.
