The Prodigal Son Luke 15:11-24 Here s an overview of what you ll be teaching this week: Make It Fun Worship Transitional activity - Fancy Dance Make It True Snack Video Memory Verse Response Picture Cards Prayer Closing Free Play Dismissal 1

2 Make It Fun (20 minutes) Before the children arrive, set up for class by gathering the 2 s Worship CD, the CD player and instruments. While the children are entering the classroom the worship CD should be playing and a volunteer should be leading the worship. This will help engage the kids as soon as they enter the room, and will help with separation anxiety. Let one or two teachers lead worship in the room while another teacher greets parents and kids at the door. The motions for the verses are provided if you find them helpful, but we encourage you just to dance around in worship. 1. Worship My God Is So Big My God is so Big, (stretch hands up tall) So strong and so mighty, (show muscle arms) There s nothing my God can not do. (shake head no and wave hands in no motion) (Repeat) The mountains are His, (hands above head, fingertips touching) The rivers are His, (wave hands side to side) The stars are His handiwork too. (twinkle fingers) This Little Light of Mine This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine. This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine, let it shine, let it shine, let it shine. (The kids hold up their index finger and move it in a circular motion.) I ve Got The Joy I've got the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart. Where? (hands up in question) Down in my heart! (bend at knees, dip hands down) Where? (hands up in question) Down in my heart! (bend at knees, dip hands down) I've got the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart (bend at knees, dip hands down) Down in my heart to stay. And I'm so happy, so very happy! (turn in circles, waving hands back and forth) I've got the love of Jesus in my heart (Rock side to side with hands over heart) And I'm so happy, so very happy! (turn in circles, waving hands back and forth) I've got the love of Jesus in my heart. (Rock side to side with hands over heart) Our God is an Awesome God Our God is an awesome God. (Wave hands in air) He reigns from heaven above (move hands in downward motion with twinkle fingers) With wisdom (point index fingers to temple), power (muscle arms) and love (hands over heart) Our God is an awesome God! (Wave hands in air) 2. Transitional Activity - Fancy Dance What You Need: Fancy Things Activity Page, tape, and music. What You Do: Before the kids arrive, tape the pictures to the floor all over the room. Walk around the room with the children and identify each of the pictures before you play. Once everyone is familiar 2

3 with the pictures, tell the children to dance when they hear the music and find something fancy to stand on when the music stops. Continue paying as long as the children are interested. What You Say: Whew! That was fun! We looked for all kinds of fancy things. A guy in our Bible story today leaves home to look for some fancy things too. In fact, he spends aaaaaaaall his money on fancy things fancy clothes, fancy houses, fancy jewelry, fancy food. He was all about fancy things! Let s go see what happens to him! 3

4 Make It True (10 minutes) 1. Snack Have children sitting in chairs near TV / Computer so that once they are settled in their seats with their snack they will be able to focus their attention on the below video while eating their snack. 2. Video Play this week s video from Wonder, Look at God s Story DVD. Be sure to click on the BIBLE ICON next to the words (and not the words themselves). This will allow you to skip the introduction skit and take you directly to the Bible Story. What You Say: The boy in the story had to feed the pigs. He was very sad and missed his home. He had made some bad choices and was afraid his dad would be mad at him. He decided to go home anyway. His dad was SO happy that his son had come back. He still loved his son even though he had made bad choices. Jesus told the story to show how much God loves us. Jesus loves us too! Who loves you? Always! [Bottom Line] Jesus loves me! 3. Memory Verse LEADER: Are you ready to practice our memory verse together? It helps us remember just how much God loves us! For God (index finger pointing up) so loved (give yourself a great, big hug) the world (spread arms in a wide circle) that He gave His only Son (cradle hands to rock baby) John 3:16 (open your hands like a book) 4. Response Picture Cards What You Need: Memory Verse Card with Maze Activity Page, markers, and crayons. What You Do: Turn to the memory verse side of the card and review memory verse together as a class. From there, turn the card over to the maze. If the kids are unable to complete the maze, allow the children to color the pictures once you have completed the maze. What You Say: The father in our story loved his son, even though he wasted all of the father s money making bad choices. When the son came back home, the father was so happy to see him that he threw a big welcome home party to show how much he loved him. Jesus told this story because He loves you the same way. He will always love you, no matter what. There is nothing you can do to make Him stop loving you. God loves you, and Jesus loves you! Who loves you? [Bottom Line] Jesus loves me. 5. Prayer Dear God, we are SO thankful You love us no matter what because we ve done some wrong things. Thank You for sending Jesus to help us know what is right and for making a way for us to be forgiven when we do something wrong. Jesus really is the best friend ever, and we are so glad You gave Him to us. We love You, God. In Jesus name, amen. Closing (Remainder of Class) 1. Free Play 2. Get Ready to Dismiss 4

5 Set any take-home creations where you or parents can get them easily. Memory Verse Cards Greet parents at the door and tell them that this month preschoolers are learning that [Bottom Line] Jesus loves me! Encourage parents to repeat the bottom line at home and help their child understand that [Bottom Line] Jesus loves me!
