2 Afternoon Seminar Reality Faith and Fantasy The Challenge for Contemporary Progressive Christians Tuesday Afternoons March :00-2:30 PM Led by Dr. P. Jeffrey Ford Associate Professor Emeritus Cleveland State University One of the distinctive characteristics of modern culture is a preoccupation with whether a particular belief or position conforms to reality, or is at odds with what science has convincingly demonstrated. At the foundation of these debates is a particular view of reality, largely, but not wholly, the product of our reliance on empirical scientific methodology as the means of attaining a true knowledge of the world. Progressive Christians frequently find themselves in an uncomfortable position in these debates. For the most part, they are in sympathy with what Marcus Borg calls the modern secular viewpoint. They accept Darwinian evolution as a convincing account of biological history and oppose requiring the teaching of creationism as science; they reject the fundamentalist assumption that the sacred scriptures can be used as a source for unchanging moral laws and prescriptions, or that scriptural narratives can be interpreted literally as historical accounts of past events; they accept that global warming and climate change are really occurring; they do not share the conviction that artificial birth control and same-sex relationships are unnatural and inherently evil. But they are troubled by the inability of this secular view to validate the reality of anything whose existence cannot be empirically verified, to provide a basis for moral principles or values, or to include intention, choice, or purpose in our understanding of the real world we inhabit. 5 Annual Parish Lenten Day of Reflection Saturday March 25, 2017 Led by Rev. James Hug S.J. at River s Edge Conference Center 9:30 AM 3 PM Suggested Donation: $25.00 Includes Lunch and Morning Coffee and Juice Jim Hug was president of the Center of Concern in Washington, D.C. from 1989 through Throughout that time, he lectured, led workshops, and networked in the U.S. and internationally. He has written extensively on social and economic justice issues from the perspectives of Catholic social thought and Christian spirituality. Currently Jim is part-time sacramental minister at the Adrian Dominican Motherhouse in Adrian, MI. He continues to explore the faith vision and spirituality needed to respond effectively to the evolving social context, a context characterized by globalization, marginalization, violence, climate change, environmental degradation, and the new U.S. political realities. These elements combine to present urgent challenges and new opportunities for justice leaders and serious Christian communities at this time in history.

6 Fairfax Community Volunteers Needed Through our Common Thread speaker series we have become acquainted with the Fairfax Renaissance Development Corporation (FRDC). There are two programs in our Fairfax neighborhood that FRDC helps to recruit volunteers for. Homework Help Program at Griot Village: Griot Village is a multigenerational housing community on Cedar Avenue. The Homework Help program runs Mondays through Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:00 during the school year. Three adult volunteers are currently needed to assist elementary school students with their homework on Mondays. Lunch Buddies Program at Bolton Elementary School: Every Friday throughout the school year volunteers work with students during their lunch hour, playing games, conversing, and participating in other recreational and educational activities. Six to eight adult volunteers are currently needed. Bolton Elementary is on Quebec Avenue on the city s east side. Each program has an orientation session. Volunteers are needed beginning sometime in early March. Beginning date to be determined based on volunteer availability. 7 Karamu Outing On Saturday February 18, sixty-five members of the community visited Karamu House Theatre for the plat Repairing a Nation. Thanks to all who came and to Cormac Somerville for organizing the event.

8 Community of Saint Peter 2017 Social Justice Grants Program In 2017 the Social Justice Committee of the Community of Saint Peter (CSP) will once again manage the Social Justice Grants Program. Members of CSP are invited to nominate organizations for consideration to receive a grant from the Community. This year the Community will make up to four grants of $3,000 each. Grant Criteria Organizations nominated and considered for grants must have a mission and vision in agreement the CSP and Social Justice Committee missions as follows: CSP Mission : We are a Catholic community. Our sharing of the Eucharist and the Word challenges us to live the message of Jesus: to love and respect all people, to serve the poor, and to work for peace and justice. Social Justice Mission: Social Justice flows from the Eucharist which, as celebrated by the Community of Saint Peter, teaches us about human dignity, calls us to right relationships, invites us to solidarity, and sends us on a mission to serve. Our focus is the needs of the vulnerable in the City of Cleveland, which we attempt to serve through activities that address ongoing issues and provide continuous benefit. Three grants will support non profit organizations serving those in need in the City of Cleveland. Members are encouraged to consider organizations working in the Fairfax neighborhood. One grant will support non profit organizations serving those in need in countries outside of the US. Eligible organizations must be based in the US. Please note that no grant can be made to organization that employs a CSP member or an individual in their family. Nomination Process CSP members who wish to nominate an organization must submit a Social Justice Organization Nomination Form found on the CSP website CSP members who nominate an organization are asked to contact the organization prior to submitting the nomination to be sure they are interested in participating in the grants process. Nomination forms are to be completed by the nominating member and submitted via to grantapplication15@gmail.com.
