2 What You May Expect Presbytery of Ohio Valley Assembly December 3, 2015 A Short Meeting The norm for December meetings is going to be observed. That is we meet for half a day and that we meet in Mitchell. Mitchell is as close to the geographic center of the presbytery as we can meet and this helps everyone getting to the meeting and back home with as much daylight as possible on both ends. Elections The Nominating Committee will report with a slate of committee members, officers for presbytery, commissioners for General Assembly and Synod. December is the major report on nominations though the committee works throughout the year. Budget The budget proposal for 2016 will be presented. Recognition of Service We recognize the service of the outgoing moderator and others who are leaving committees and other leadership positions. Worship Rev. Eric Erickson will preach at his final meeting as moderator of presbytery. Installation of New Officers We will install new officers which will be elected at the meeting itself.

3 Presbytery of Ohio Valley Driving Directions Mitchell Presbyterian Church 520 State Road 60 E, Mitchell, IN (812) As a courtesy, the Presbytery attempts to provide driving directions and parking information (when known) to all the members attending the Assembly. Due to the size of the presbytery, we are unable to include all possible routes to the meeting. The directions we provide begin with major routes into the city/town where the assembly will be held, and include more detailed directions regarding the streets closer to the meeting site. Please use an online source or printed map to find the way from your starting point to the place where these directions begin. The POV website has all church locations marked on Google Maps to assist you. Occasionally, there may be construction/detours that we are unaware of. To be prepared for this possibility, it is wise to have a map, Google map printout, or GPS navigation available, just in case. From the North: Take State Road 37 S to Mitchell and turn left onto State Road 60 E. Church is on the right. From the East: Take State Road 50 W and follow the sign to State Road 37 S. 5 Clerk s Report The Rev. Lawrence Jackman Death of Rev. David Bremer David died on October 21. He spent most of his life in central Indiana. His home was Shelbyville and he was ordained by Whitewater Valley Presbytery in 1973 following his seminary training at Princeton. For several years he served the church in Edinburgh (3 miles into Whitewater Valley Presbytery) and then had a hiatus in California (San Fernando Presbytery) serving congregations there. In 1991 he returned to Indiana and began service at Bloomington United. He retired from that call at the end of He would have been 67 a month after his passing. David was often generous with opinions and not overly shy to share them. He did not spend a lot of energy or time taking the edge off of his thoughts and ideas. He said it like he saw it and he often felt it with real emotion. He had a passion for the real practice of inclusion and was pleased to serve in a truly multicultural setting at Bloomington. He was also pleased to have helped birth the Brown County Presbyterian Fellowship. He managed to attend a celebration there on the Sunday before his death. David was also driven by the call to serve the marginalized people of our world. He loved the mission of Nyaka in Africa for orphans of the AIDS epidemic and of serving HIV/AIDS persons here in the states. David s wife, Brenda Wood, survives. Overtures Headed to the Next GA A variety of Overtures are directed to the next General Assembly. Current practice of having at least one presbytery concur with any overture is still not widely understood. It is important. Some of the overtures are calculated to slow the rate of change in the church overall. Two, so far, are designed to revisit issues from the prior Assembly. One is to re-visit the marriage definition issue. That is from Kiskiminetas Presbytery and asks to go back to one man/one woman definition. Another addresses the restructure of Synods. Two initiatives address the General Assembly and the prospect of unification into one office instead of an Office of the General Assembly and The Presbyterian Mission Agency. One overture creates a process and the second simply directs the merger of the two offices. It is important to remember that these Overtures are initiatives from Presbyteries. They are not in a form that will be voted by the whole church. They do serve as indicators of the types of matters that will be considered and perhaps reported out in one form or another. Specific requests for concurrence with overtures are now a part of regular process. A recent change in the rules of the GA is that at least one presbytery must concur for an overture to receive consideration.

6 HOWESVILLE UNITED PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH ( ) As was true of many towns in the mid-west, the settler's thirst for religious worship in the Howesville community resulted in a congregation. The Vincennes Presbytery, at its fall meeting in 1869, organized a Presbyterian Church in southern Clay County. The first meetings were held in schoolhouses, with the first church built and dedicated on November 26, 1871, with the Reverend Henry Little as moderator. Some of the timbers of the church were so large, they had to be hauled by oxen. At the time of the dedication, the membership had reached thirty two. In its early days this building was used as a union church; later all denominations except the Presbyterians had discontinued, so the church remained Presbyterian. What began as a community place of worship is returning to that broader definition with the dissolution of the United Presbyterian Church. The building and the members have begun to serve in a non-denominational community church basis. The community of Howesville is in the southeast part of Clay County. The closest congregation in the presbytery to the town is Bloomfield. The community was initially as strong as many others in the days just after the Civil War. By the time of 1907 the town had shrunk to the point where it no longer could support a post office. Small villages consolidated and became towns around transportation. Howesville did not have the services to make it one of those surviving places. The town of less than 1,000 continues, as does ministry to people in that community. The Presbytery of Ohio Valley celebrates the 145 years of faithful service of the Howesville United Presbyterian Church and blesses the former members and building as a continuing place of ministry to the cause of Jesus in this world. Child Protection Policy The presbytery continues in need of a child protection policy. Some initial draft work has been completed, but the project needs to be completed. Ordination of Kimber-Lee Adams Peace River Presbytery (Florida), acting on behalf of the Presbytery of Ohio Valley, appointed a commission and completed the assigned task of ordination for Rev. Kim Adams. The ordination was held on November 22, 2015 in Peace River Church in Bradenton, Florida.

Mark McDaniel, Moderator The committee met on November 21 and reports the following items. 1) The committee met with and interviewed Inquirer Tamara Recob. Following interview the committee acted to transition Tamara to Candidate for Ministry. She will appear at the December assembly to mark this transition. (A faith statement is attached below.)

12 2) The committee met and interviewed Marietta Macy. Marietta has previously been enrolled and left the preparation process at her own initiative. She has continued to discern her own goals and call and requested to be re-enrolled in the CPM process. She has been enrolled again as an Inquirer. Tamara Recob Statement of Faith I believe that God is the Creator of all, who is omniscient (all knowing), omnipresent (always present), and omnipotent (all powerful). The mysteries of God human kind has studied since the beginning. To know God more is to know ourselves more since we were created in God s likeness. We were created to worship God in community with other believers. I believe that Jesus Christ, the Son of God and Man, the Living Word, came to bridge the divide that separated us from our sin-torn relationship with God. Christ, God-incarnate, who came to earth perfect and holy as an infant, grew into adulthood, a lived a life that we are to emulate as our very own. His death and resurrection rendered the sentence of death because of sin void and promised us eternal life. I believe that the Holy Spirit who always has been, along with Christ and God, dwells among us in our trials and in our victories. We are filled with the Spirit as we pray and as we go about God s work in the world. It is our comforter, our counselor as we take the journey that is life. The Spirit draws us closer to God. I believe in the unity of the Trinity (Father, Son and Spirit), each an intricate substance of God with their own function and character. The three are not of each other, but they are all fully one God. Scripture is the inspired Word of God and for us is comprised of both the Hebrew Bible (the Old Testament) and the New Testament which humankind, through the help of the Spirit, wrote and compiled to draw us, the children of God, closer in our relationship with our Creator through the life, death, and resurrection of the Son, and the nurture of the Spirit. Scripture is used for instruction and teaching about God and ways in which we are to response to God. The Church is the body of Christ working out in the World. The church, a member of that body, gathers the people together in covenant and fellowship to worship the Lord, our God, and to provide a support structure and provide accountability to each other. The Sacraments of the Church, Communion and Baptism, provide means by which we join and remember that covenant. One universal baptism, whether it is infant or adult, marks that individual as one of God s children. Through confirmation when the time is appropriate that person speaks of their own desire to be a member of the Church and thus become engrafted into the body of Christ. Through Communion we remember Christ s sacrifice, his taking on of sin, and his victory over that sin and death. We remember our own sinfulness, remember our baptism, rededicate our lives to the kingdom of God, and are renewed in purpose when we partake of the bread and the cup which is representative of the flesh and the blood of Christ. Christ s body broken for us, Christ s blood shed for us. This act of communion should never be taken lightly, but in honor and reverence. Christian discipleship is more than going and telling of Jesus Christ. Discipleship is living and breathing Christ s actions out in the world. We are to be Christ s hands and feet as well and his voice. Justice and love should at all times be the underlying current that charges our faith as disciples of Christ.

15 POV Academy Committee Report Elder Barbara Snyder, Moderator The POV Academy Committee has met twice at Camp Pyoca since the last POV Assembly, on September 19 and November 14. At both meetings, we discussed how we might better get the word out that the Academy classes are for all adults in all of our POV churches, not just those interested in serving as Commissioned Ruling Elders. The November 14 meeting was held concurrently with the History of the Christian Church class. At lunch that day, we were pleased to welcome a new certification student from the Presbytery of Southeastern Illinois. She joins the three students from Whitewater Valley Presbytery who have already been participating in the Academy. It is gratifying to know that the POV Academy has garnered a reputation for excellence even beyond the bounds of the Presbytery of Ohio Valley. On both meeting agendas was the continued planning of the next few Academy classes, all to be held at Camp Pyoca. Here are the details already known: Reformed Theology Content and Practice of Our Reformed Tradition, January 15-16, led by Rev. Larry Jackman. Registration closes January 1. Tools for Scriptural Interpretation, March 11-12, led by Rev. Mitch Coggin. Registration for certification students closes January 10, for all others on February 25. This will be the last opportunity for students interested in becoming a CRE to enroll in the Academy, but all classes after this are still open to everyone taking them just for their own enjoyment and learning or for continuing education. Presbyterian Polity, May We hope to be able to announce the instructor at the December POV Assembly. Congregational Leadership, September 16-17, led by Rev. Susan McGhee. Pastoral Care, November We encourage all pastors and commissioners to share this information about the available classes with the members of their congregations!

16 POV Mission Council Report The Rev. Susan McGhee, Moderator For Presbytery's Information Council conducted an electronic vote as a commission of presbytery September 15, 2015, and took the following actions relating to Howesville United Presbyterian Church: Authorized Susan McGhee and Lawrence Jackman to meet with the congregation pursuant their request for dissolution of the congregation as a Presbyterian Church. Appointed Susan McGhee moderator of any meetings necessary with the members and officers of the Howesville congregation. Approved the transfer of the property to the new Howesville congregation. That beyond the real property, any personal property of the church also be transferred. Approved the transfer by Quit Claim and authorized Lawrence Jackman to sign such a deed on behalf of the presbytery. Council conducted an electronic vote as a commission of presbytery September 22, 2015, and took the following actions relating to Howesville United Presbyterian Church: Dissolved the congregation, effective October 1, 2015, pursuant to presbytery authority in G-3.03b. Transferred the real and personal property of the congregation to the Community Church of Howesville by bill of sale and Quit Claim Deed and that this sale be for one dollar and other good and valuable consideration. Directed the Stated Clerk be directed to include in the minutes of presbytery a citation of the history and ministry of the United Presbyterian Church of Howesville. Council conducted an electronic vote October 6, 2015, and took the following action: Approved a plan to restore jurisdiction to the Charlestown Community Presbyterian Church, with final restoration occurring following the installation of a new session. Council conducted an electronic vote October 22, 2015, and took the following actions: Called a special meeting of the Presbytery of Ohio Valley for Wednesday, November 11, at 10:30 am (9:30 am Central) for the purpose of examining a candidate for ordination to the office of Teaching Elder in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)

17 Acting as a commission of presbytery, called a meeting of the congregation of First Presbyterian Church, Jasper, per G , at a time and date to be determined by the Moderator of Session, Stated Clerk, and Executive Presbyter, for the purpose of considering issues related to the congregation s relationship to the Presbytery of Ohio Valley and the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). 22 Stewardship Report The Rev. David Crittenden, Moderator Stewardship Opportunities 1. Stewardship Kaleidoscope 2016 February 29-March 3 San Antonio, Texas An annual event sponsored by several midcouncils, the Presbyterian Foundation and the Presbyterian Mission Agency. Workshops, plenaries and worship focused on stewardship issues. Think about sending your pastor and a team from your congregation. More information at: 2. Outlook Webinar DVD: The Making of Stewardship Leaders Led by Sean Mitchell The presbytery office has several DVDs of a recent webinar led by Sean Mitchell outlining resources and practical information for all leaders in the area of Stewardship. This one hour and a half webinar includes questions from those in the original audience and would be helpful for congregational stewardship committees, sessions or individuals interested in current ideas and thinking in the area of stewardship. Contact the presbytery to borrow one of the DVDs. 3. Creating Congregational Cultures of Generosity - Lake Institute on Faith and Giving Our presbytery will be hosting a seminar next year on Creating Congregational Cultures of Generosity. This interactive seminar consists of three one day sessions for congregational teams of four usually consisting of: the pastor, the church treasurer, a stewardship committee representative one other leader. The sessions are spaced out over several months to allow for time for the team to test their assumptions and what they have learned. We hope to have congregational teams participate. 23 Evangelism and Congregational Witness Committee Report Rev. Katrina Pekich-Bundy, Moderator Since Vera White s presentation at the last presbytery meeting we have received much positive feedback from people, excited about these great ministries happening in the denomination. This event sparked some ideas for a few people, and we have heard about how God is moving within our own presbytery. While we do not have any new worshiping communities to report at this time, we are excited for some ministries that have come to our attention that may qualify as a new worshiping community at some point in the future. If you felt moved by Vera s presentation and think you know of a new worshiping community within our presbytery, don t hesitate to contact a member of the committee for more information and support. The ECW committee is thrilled to be working with the Congregational Mission and Vitality Committee regarding an all presbytery event in June.
