5 United Way of Carlisle & Cumberland County is honored to recognize Kurt E. Suter as the recipient of the 2018 Alexis de Tocqueville Humanitarian Award Kurt E. Suter was a vital member of the Carlisle business community for decades. As a graduate of both Carlisle High School and Dickinson College, his local roots run deep. After a successful entrepreneurial career in real estate development in the local area, he took great pleasure in being able to give back to the community. His passion for philanthropy afforded him the opportunity to serve the local Carlisle community by sitting on various boards. He was the President of Board of Directors of The Arc of Cumberland & Perry Counties (CPARC) for three years and was proud of his role in orchestrating the land donation for the current CPARC administrative offices. Kurt served on the board of directors of the United Way of Carlisle & Cumberland County and was a member of the United Way s prestigious Alexis de Tocqueville Giving Society for 20+ years directing his charitable giving to many local non-profit organizations. Kurt also served on the boards of Farmers Trust/ Financial Trust, F&M Trust, and was a member of Dickinson College s John Dickinson Society. Not one to seek the spotlight, it found him and over the course of his life, Kurt was the recipient of numerous accolades and awards, which included a Certificate of National Merit from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Luther S. Beers Distinguished Service Award from CPARC, and most recently the Carlisle Area Chamber of Commerce s Business Achievement Award with long-time business partner Bill Hooke. Even with all of his accomplishments, Kurt always made time for family and fun, loving to travel the world with his wife, and enjoying annual Walt Disney World trips with his children and grandchildren, golfing with the Bailey Club, monthly lunches with the Friday Club, reading and spending time at his home in Florida.

7 About Alexis de Tocqueville Alexis Charles-Henri Clerel de Tocqueville, author of Democracy in America, was commissioned to study the prisons and penitentiaries of the United States in 1831 with Gustave de Beaumont. During his study of American society and politics, he observed the American spirit of volunteerism and admired the commitment to advancing the common good and creating opportunities for all. About The Alexis de Tocqueville Society Created in 1972 by United Way Worldwide to recognize persons who have rendered outstanding service as volunteers, The Alexis de Tocqueville Society inducts members who embody de Tocqueville s observations of the American spirit of voluntary effort for the common good. In 1998, United Way of Carlisle & Cumberland County established its own Alexis de Tocqueville Society to acknowledge the commitment of local community leaders to philanthropy. I have seen Americans making great and sincere sacrifices for the key common good and a hundred times I have noticed that, when needs be, they almost always gave each other faithful support. - Alexis de Tocqueville
