SIXTEEN (16) DOCUMENTS OF VATICAN II COUNCIL: 1. Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy (Sacrosanctum Concilium) 2. Decree on the Media of Social Communication (Inter Mirifica) 3. Dogmatic Constitution on the Church (Lumen Gentium) 4. Decree on Ecumenism (Unitatis Redintegrato) 5. Decree on the Catholic Churches of the Eastern Rite (Orientaliom Ecclesiarum) 6. Declaration on Christian Education (Gravissimum Educacionis) 7. Declaration on the Relation of the church to Non-Christian Religions (Nostra Aetate) 8. Decree Concerning the Pastoral Office of Bishops in the Church (Christus Dominus) 9. Decree on the Adaptation and Renewal of Religious Life (Perfectae Caritatis) 10. Decree on Priestly Training (Optatam Totius) 11. Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity (Apostolicam Actuositatem) 12. Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation (Dei Verbum) 13. Declaration on Religious Freedom (Dignitatis Humanae) 14. Decree on the Ministry and Life of Priests (Presbyterorum Ordinis) 15. Decree on the Mission Activity of the Church (Ad Gentes) 16. Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World (Gaudium et Spes) 6

3. The Catholic Church was founded by Christ our Lord to bring salvation to all men (women). It feels obliged, therefore, to preach the gospel. In the same way, it believes that its task involves employing the means of social communication to announce the good news of salvation, and to teach men (women) how to use them properly. It is the Church's birth right to use and own any of these media which are necessary or useful for the formation of Christians and for pastoral activity. Pastors of souls have the task of instructing and directing the faithful how to use these media in a way that will ensure their own salvation and perfection and that of all mankind. For the rest it will be principally for laymen to animate these media with a Christian and human spirit and to ensure that they live up to humanity's hopes for them, in accordance with God's design. 7

11. A special responsibility for the proper use of the means of social communication rests on journalists, writers, actors, designers, producers, exhibitors, distributors, operators, sellers, critics - all those, in a word, who are involved in the making and transmission of communications in any way whatever. It is clear that a very great responsibility rests on all of these people in today's world: they have power to direct mankind along a good path or an evil path by the information they impart and the pressure they exert. It will be for them to regulate economic, political and artistic values in a way that will not conflict with the common good. To achieve this result more surely, they will do well to form professional organizations capable of imposing on their members-if necessary by a formal pledge to observe a moral code-a respect for the moral law in the problems they encounter and in their activities. They should always be mindful of the fact that a very large proportion of their readership and audience are young people who are in need of publications and entertainments for wholesome amusement and inspiration. They should ensure that religious features are entrusted to serious and competent persons and are handled with proper respect. 24. For the rest, the Council is confident that all the sons (daughters) of the Church will welcome the principles and regulations contained in this decree and will observe them faithfully. Thus, they will not suffer damage as they use the media. Rather will the media, like salt and light, add savor to the earth and light to the world. Further, it invites all men (and women) of good will, especially those who control the media, to use them solely for the good of humanity, for its fate becomes more and more dependent on their right use. The name of the Lord will thus be glorified by these modern inventions as it was in former times by the masterpieces of art; as the apostle said: "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever" (Heb. 13:8). 8

Social Communication is the study of communicative processes within Society. Thus, Social Communication is concerned about the interactions of human beings in their public expressions within a respective society or cultural group. - Giorgio Braga We celebrate the blessings of speech, of hearing, of sight which enable us to emerge from our isolation and loneliness in order to exchange with those around us the thoughts and sentiments which arise in our hearts. We celebrate the gifts of writing and reading, by which the wisdom of our ancestors is placed at our disposal and our own experience and reflection are passed on to the generations that follow us. Then we recognize the value of the marvels even more wonderful: the marvels of technology which God has destined human genius to discover (Inter Mirifica 1) - World Communication Day

From the Gospel words transpires that sense of profound communion and exchange which live in the mystery of God and which is at the root of all our human communication. In the Trinitarian communion, the dialogue between the persons is ongoing. We can say that in the Trinity the three Divine Persons are the more persons as they form a unified communion and the more communion as they are persons. This way, every one of us realizes the same, the more he lives the appropriate identity in dialogue and as gift with and through others. - Carlo Cardinal Martini (Ephata, Apriti) COMMUNICATION-SALVATION HISTORY/PROCESS REVELATION (OT) INCARNATION (NT) WORD CHURCH SACRAMENT KERYGMA KOINONIA DIAKONIA HOLY SPIRIT TRINITARIAN DIMENSION 10

TITUS BRANDSMA Media Education is an approach and method in the pursuit of truth through Spirituality and Social Communication TITUS BRANDSMA MEDIA EDUCATION Seminar- Workshop COURSE DESCRIPTION Media education is the process of teaching and learning about media; media literacy is the outcome the knowledge and skills the learner acquire. 12 Situation and Importance of Media Education: The messages and structures of Media must be taken seriously, some of the reasons for the urgency of this task are: 1. The high rate of media consumption and the saturation of our society by the media. 2. The media's influence on shaping the perceptions, beliefs and attitudes, the seminar will facilitate the understanding of those influences as media education can connect and disconnect us from our dependencies on them. 3. The growth in media industries and the importance of information in our society, the seminar can help us understand who owns and controls media and information, and to challenge the great inequalities which exist between the manufacturers of information and the media users/consumers. 4. The importance of media in our central democratic processes, hence, this Media Education seminar and training of Media Educators are essentials in the making of rational decisions, active involvement in our social systems of governance and becoming effective change agents in the society. 5. The increasing importance of New Media and the challenge to learn how to "read," interpret, or deconstruct the meaning of these images (in print, broadcast, electronic media) for media education, literacy and advocacy. 12
