2 The Message Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat Please put a penny in the old mans hat If you haven t got a penny, a ha penny will do If you haven t got a ha penny Then God bless you! We all know the old nursery rhyme but it does have a certain poignancy at the moment. Lord Young may have lost his job for talking about the so called recession and reminding us we have never had it so good but many others are also going to lose their jobs, because the cuts and the recession actually are quite real. However, wherever we sit in the structure of society, we in the UK are actually all much better off - even in the depths of our despair and difficulties, than the majority of the worlds population. We still have our faiths, health, education, wealth and welfare and most importantly our freedom. Our freedoms to choose, to speak and to worship as we see fit. When times seem hard to us, this is actually the time that it is most important for all of us to give, and proportionally give more than maybe we did before. It may be hard, but it is the only way to keep the society we cherish intact in the face of adversity. The support of those in need is the responsibility of us all, we might like to think of it in terms of the phrase commonly attributed to the 16th century Protestant reformer John Bradford. there but for the Grace of God go I as he watched a prisoner taken to the scaffold. The world is a perilous place and misfortune can strike even the most wealthy. At this time as we march into Advent and we all prepare for the Christian Festival of Christmas, celebrating the birth of Christ, we need to reflect on what it means to us as an historically Christian people, and how it directs our actions for today. The birth of Christ was the new Covenant from God to all his earthly peoples. A new relationship, not of rules and laws, but of trust, grace and faith. Be faithful to God and he will provide all we need, not necessarily all that we want! That might be semantics, but it is a difference, that adults, unlike children should understand. In times of economic chaos we need to think on that when we ve used what we need there must be some left over to help those who do not have enough. The Governments refusal to cut the International Aid budget is their realisation of this. Hopefully we will in turn receive our own economic rewards from that aid. Returning to the rhyme, if you cant give a penny something less is definitely OK, but if you cant give anything, for you yourself are in need, then be assured that God will look after you by providing enough for all - and there is enough!!! Its just very badly managed in our very weak, corrupt and feeble humans hands. As you keep Christmas with your families, relax and enjoy all the festivities, but don t forget that we are all members of Gods family, and as such we owe each other our support in whatever way we feel we can give. Have a Peaceful Christmas HAVE YOUR SAY. Contributions to the magazine are always welcome. If you wish to contribute an article, photograph or advertise an organisation or event in or around Nocton, please send the details to the editor. 5 A History of Nocton Church - Part 2 All Saints Church and Nocton - An Early History On the 13 th of October 1541 King Henry VIII himself visited Nocton with his flighty fifth wife Katherine Howard, staying overnight with the young squire Thomas Wymbishe on their return from a royal progress through Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. He is said to have planted an ancient chestnut tree in the Hall grounds. (Not long afterwards Queen Katherine lost her head, partly because of her infidelities during this very progress). The manor house where the royal couple stayed has long since disappeared, along with its successor on the site of the Priory, and by the 1670s ownership of Nocton had passed from the descendants of Norman d Arcy to the Ellys family. The first of the family to live at Nocton was the Puritan judge and MP Sir William Ellys, whose splendid monument (brought from the old church) can still be seen in the tower of All Saints. Though he held high office as solicitor-general to Oliver Cromwell, he afterwards managed to make his peace with Charles II, and died a wealthy old bachelor in 1680, leaving Nocton to his great-nephew Sir William Ellys, baronet. ( ). It was this second Sir William who, in about 1690, built the magnificent seat of Nocton Hall, on the site of the present Hall. His mansion (later known as the Old Hall ) burnt down in 1834, but a fragment of its separate banqueting hall (c.1680?) still survives, forming the wall of a house about 100 yards north of the church. Old engravings show that the Old Hall was a large E-plan building, with five turrets topped by cupolas. The 10 feet high Ellys Monument in the North Tower. A Survivor from the original Medieval church Late residents of the Old Hall included the rakish Sir Francis Dashwood, second husband of Sir William s daughter-in-law: nationally notorious as the founder of the Hellfire Club, Sure Francis was better-known locally as the public-spirited builder of Dunston Pillar, whose remains sill stand by the main A15 road some four miles west of Nocton. Originally 92 feet high, equipped with refreshment rooms, and topped by a lantern, it was designed as a land-lighthouse to guide travellers across the highwayman-haunted To be continued next month. The census is a count of the population in the UK. It takes place every 10 years and asks everyone the same questions on the same day to give a complete picture of the nation. Why is it important? The amount of money that councils have to spend on services for the next 10 years will be based on the number and type of people living in the local area. What jobs are available? A range of temporary part time and full time jobs are available from supervisory roles to general collectors across England and Wales. Apply now on line at or contact Census 2011 on Be in the Know The How:When:What of our Village you hear it first at the Parish Council Meetings! Next Meeting: Tuesday 7 December at 7pm DOG WARDEN Nocton Parish Council is to employ a Dog Warden as some of our public spaces and footpaths are being regularly fouled. The Wardens also cover most dog related problems, although we are lucky in Nocton these are few and far between, in addition they will provide advice on responsible dog ownership. However they do have teeth, with powers to issue fines where appropriate. MaryAnn Williams 6

7 Profile of a Nocton Resident Scott Studd Scott Studd is a young man who has lived in the village of Nocton for the last 8 years with his family, dad Glen, mum Dawn & older sister Tanya. He is 18 years old and has a moderate learning difficulty/autism. Scott has attended Queens Park School since the age of 4. Over the last few years Scott, along with 6 of his classmates, has been working towards his Duke of Edinburgh awards. These awards fall into 3 categories, Bronze, Silver & Gold. Having successfully completed his Bronze & Silver Awards Scott was keen to participate in the Gold Award, a considerable challenge to anyone that attempts it. As part of his Gold Award Scott had to volunteer to help in the community. To achieve this he spent several hours each week at Hartsholme Park with the park keepers clearing the woodland areas and Scot with his Gold Award Certificate helping to keep the public areas safe and tidy. Scott doesn t enjoy working out of doors, hating the rain! but he persevered and had excellent reports from his co-workers. Scott was also required to complete a physical challenge; this has to be planned and trained for by the team. Scott and his team, along with their leaders, climbed Scafell Pike. En route the team carry out navigation exercises and safety procedures. This was a long, arduous climb taking in total 9 and ½ hours. It is to the credit of all the participants that no-one turned back. Fortunately for Scott it was dry that day! For the Gold Award a residential section also needs to be completed. This is carried out with students from other schools and colleges who are generally not known to each other. The students spend 5 days and 4 nights away from home taking part in activities which are team building, increasing confidence and self esteem. Scott thought it was fun and a real chance to do something different! Not without a sigh of relief, Scott finished all the required components of his Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award earlier this year. On Nov 2nd 2010, Scott and his mum, dressed in their finery, attended St James Palace in London where he met and talked to Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, founder of the programme. The surroundings and atmosphere were quite overwhelming but Scott took them, and the presentation, firmly in his stride. It was a wonderful, if tiring, day and an experience that Scott can justly be proud of. Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award is a challenge for anyone, but as Scott has special needs it was inevitable that the challenge would increase. Scott deserves credit for his achievements, (Mum s very proud!!) and his willingness to help those of his team that were less able than himself. Well done Scottie! 7

9 When did you last use your Wemble? As a Wemble is a hand drill the answer is probably Not since I got my first Black & Decker! If you have a vice you don t want any more - or even a skiving knife - then there is someone else who does. Unused hand tools such as these and hammers, trowels, blowlamps, wrenches and bicycle tyre levers are being offered a good home where they will be given loving care and attention and will be well used. They will be collected, refurbished by volunteers and then sent to practical people in Africa to enable them to earn a living for themselves and their families by serving the community. This is the work of the charity Tools for Self Reliance. They need top quality hand tools for metal workers, wood workers, mechanics, electricians and leather workers (but no gardening tools). Metric measurements rule over there, so imperial equipment such as rulers & spanners cannot be found a home - sorry! Haberdashery (what a lovely word!) materials are also needed - reels of cotton, buttons, pins, safety pins, sewing needles, thimbles, press studs and other such things. Knitting needles, crochet hooks and lengths of cotton materials are also welcome - but not garments. Full information and list of the goods can be found at This is being organised by a group in Potterhanworth, but Chris Hewitt has volunteered as the Collection point in Nocton. Please drop your donations of to Chris, at Friars Crag, Main Street, Nocton.
