3 WELCOME JOSHUA SON! Earlier this summer we welcomed Joshua Son to the Grace Church staff as our Worship Pastor. Joshua returns to us after 5 years serving as Worship Pastor at another church. We are so excited to have Joshua, his wife Ariel, and daughter Naomi return to the Grace Church family. We took some time to interview him for the August Newsletter to help you get to know Joshua and his family. Who are some of your musical influences? I m a guitar player and almost every guitar player has been influenced by Jimi Hendrix whether they know it or not. Jimi was an amazingly gifted musician. He took the electric guitar beyond what anyone could imagine at the time. He was an unbelievable innovator. He s also from the great state of Washington! The Edge from U2 is also a huge influence. The Edge s style opened a lot of musical doors for my playing. Finally, Nigel Hendroff from Hillsong Church is a huge influence. Nigel is technically skilled yet very tasteful. He also has amazing tone. What do your personal times of worship look like? I love it when my daughter is playing with her toys and she takes a quick break to come over and give me a kiss. It s the best. She s so sweet. But the times I love the most with my daughter is when she wants to spend longer moments with me hugging and cuddling. She puts one arm around my neck, her head on my chest and her thumb in her mouth. I get to just hold her and love on her. God loves it when we are driving in a car and we lift a worship song up to Him or when we tell him we love Him with a quick prayer. But He really loves it when we press into Him and spend intimate uninterrupted moments in His presence. ENCOUNTERS WITH THE LIVING GOD CHANGE LIVES. I m trying to be intentional about having those extended times with God. What is your worship philosophy? I want people have to have an encounter with God. We see in scripture that when people encountered God, their lives were changed forever. We see Moses speaking with God face to face as one would do with a friend (Exodus 33:11) and when he did so, his face would shine. The Bible says that he was radiant (Exodus 34:29). When we meet with God, we come out of that meeting different. We may not be literally shining or glowing like Moses but people should be able to tell the difference. The book of Acts shows us Peter and John before the Jewish ruling council as common men speaking boldly, with authority. The council was astonished and they recognized that they had been with Jesus. Encounters with the living God change lives. When we are in the presence of a Holy God, we re reminded how much He s forgiven us, how much He s blessed us, and how our lives should be lived in response to that truth. If the only thing we accomplished on Sunday mornings is that we met with God, that is enough. Favorite worship song? I love triumphant, declarative songs. I love joining with the people of God and erupting in praise to the King of Kings! Man of Sorrows, Jesus only Jesus, This I believe. Those are some of my favorites. What books are you reading? I just finished a book called Creating Magic by Lee Cockrell. He was the president of Disney World. He talks about fostering a creative culture combined with great leadership. It s really good! I m also reading Good leaders ask great questions by John Maxwell and Bloodlines by John Piper.

4 (Welcome Joshua Son continued) What are you learning? Right now I m on a big learning kick with the technical arts and I m loving it. I m discovering more of the nuances and details of sound, lighting, visuals and stage design. Most of us don t realize what it truly takes to put together a worship service. We show up and the lights are bright, the mics are on, the words are up, and the music is playing. We don t realize that it took a small army of volunteers working passionately for the Lord, putting in hours upon hours in service so that the people of God can gather to worship. I call the technical arts team the offensive linemen of the church. You only know they re even there if something goes wrong. VOLUNTEER PROFILE: DIEGO ELIZALDE Diego has been serving at Grace Church for 7 years. Sometimes he serves quietly and sometimes not so quietly. You might see him wrapping cables or setting up a microphone but you ll definitely hear him making a joyful noise to the Lord on the drum set. What do you enjoy most about Grace Church? There are so many things I like about our church, but I think a constant over the years has been Dave s dedication to helping us all grow and make continuous progress as Christians. He never gets comfortable and I find his sermons reassuring as well as inspiring. Another thing is the quality AND quantity of the relationships I have built over the years. I absolutely love the people that make up our church. Who are you musical influences? My influences are many and follow no established order even though they tend to gravitate toward jazz and fusion. My influences also change depending on the musical season I find myself in. Sometimes my inspiration comes directly from people I admire and look up to as masters of their respective crafts, but it also comes from literature, a Bible verse, or the soft, sweet laughter of my children. You play bass, drums and do audio; which are you enjoying the most? These days I find myself in quite a predicament. I enjoy all these functions more or less equally, which causes me to constantly want to be doing the other thing. So, if I am playing bass, it makes me want to drum. If I am playing drums then I want to play bass, and regardless of whether I am playing drums or bass, I always want to get on the soundboard and make it sound the way I want it to. I need four more arms! What is your favorite worship song? So many to chose from. So many Holy Spirit-led artists write so many good songs...it is hard to narrow it down to just one! However, last weekend I was playing bass and as we started playing Jesus Paid It All I noticed how musically basic and perfect it was - all at the same time; the unmistakable mark the Holly Spirit. Absolutely divine!

6 GRACE AT A GLANCE August 16 GKW WORSHIP CAMP GKW Worship Camp is a two day - day camp for current GKW Worship Team members and those who would like to try out. GKW Worship Team is open to those in 3rd grade through adulthood. GKW Worship Camp is on August 25 and 26. We are excited to go see the movie War Room on August 27th at 7:15pm at Regal Cinemas Cascade 16. The movie is about an embattled woman who turns to faith and prayer to transform her life and save her family. You can purchase tickets in the lobby of Grace Church on August 16 and August 23. The price individually is $8, and for families of four or more the price is $30. MEN S BREAKFAST The purpose of the Men s Breakfast is to encourage, challenge and connect men as we live out our faith in Christ. We will serve a full breakfast. Our guest speaker will be Les Albert and he will share on the title Winning Everyday. Please plan to join us Saturday, August 29 at 7:30am. GRACE CHURCH PICNIC Our annual church picnic at Camp Crestview is Sunday, September 13. We are so excited for this year s church picnic. We have many of the favorite activities returning like the pool, rock wall, kickball, old timey games, and more.
