While a six-week Biblical study on campus based on the traditionally called seven last words spoken by the Savior on the cross was completed in late March, please plan on attending the spiritual services of Holy week being celebrated at Trinity United Methodist Church. Holy week started on Palm Sunday with a riveting cantata orchestrated by Trinity music director Carol Bumgarner and will it culminate with three Easter services on Sunday, April 5 in the church Sanctuary. On Wednesday, April 1, Rev. Khalif Smith will be leading Holy services at 7 p.m. The following day, Maundy Thursday services, the name given to the day on which Jesus celebrated the Passover with His disciples, known as the Last Supper, will be observed also at 7 p.m. Holy week continues on April 3 at 7 p.m. with Good Friday services in which Christ s death will be remembered with hymns, prayers of thanksgiving, observance of the Lord s Supper and a message centered on Christ suffering for our sakes. Finally, Easter services will be held on April 5 at 6, 9 and 10:45 a.m. No matter which worship service you attend, you are encouraged to come early before each time to attach your live In the example shown above, a 10- foot Living Cross will greet the congregation and guests attending all three Easter services Sunday morning. Everyone is encouraged to dress up the cross by bringing their own loose flowers and adding them to the fixture. flowers to a 10-foot Living Cross that will be erected in the front of the church. It should prove to be an uplifting experience in what is anticipated to be an annual Easter endeavor. This is the first Easter services officiated by Pastor Smith, who has been Trinity s senior minister for nearly one year after a long ministry in Georgia. So plan on being emotionally uplifted as we celebrate the resurrection of the risen Christ who died for our sins and transgressions. Although the flowers displayed on the living cross by parishioners may not stand up over time, the feeling of Easter with the resurrection and victory over death will stay with us all throughout the year. 4 Light Up Your Life for Youth There is still time to purchase decorative lights being sold by Trinity s Youth group which serves as a fundraiser according to Youth Director Maria Astete. These quaint lights are being sold for $10 each of which $5 will go toward the group s planned summer activities and $5 will to the church s general fund. If you are interested in purchasing these decorative lights, which are perfect for nightstands or small tables, the Youth will continue to sell them in Café Trinity between Sunday worship services. You can also drop by the church office weekdays Monday to Thursday. Lights come in red, pink, coral and yellow. Don t miss out on this opportunity to purchase these beautiful objects that are ideal for home use or as gifts. This would be an ideal time to help support the Youth who have been working hard on projects throughout the year. WOW Wednesdays Begin Following a one-week absence and the conclusion of the six-week Wonderful Wednesday program, Trinity s WOW Wednesday program resumes April 15 for six weeks with an opportunity for parishioners to come study, eat and worship. Drop by for the supper of the day at 5:30 p.m. and followed by worship in the Sanctuary at 6:30. Study time is planned for 7 o clock. 5 In Passing Memorial Service Planned Memorial services will be held for longtime Trinity member Millie Edwin on Saturday, April 11 at 11:45 a.m. in the Sanctuary. Millie, who passed away on March 6 and was cremated six days later, lived in Las Vegas since 1970 and worked as a nurse at University Medical Center until a leg injury ended her career. She schooled at the Ellen Thoburn Cowen Memorial Institute of Nursing in Kolar, India, an educational institution of the United Methodist Church, and worked in the United States and Canada before coming to Southern Nevada. Millie will be missed by her friend Leela Abraham, who also was schooled in Kolar, India and also attended Trinity along with her many friends from India who have also called Las Vegas home. Please pray for peace and understanding for her family and friends. Partnership with CSN Successful Trinity s partnership with the College of Southern Nevada has been termed a success. The first ESL class will finish on April 8. The second ESL class is scheduled to begin on Monday, April 20 and end on June 10. This class meets in the Fellowship Hall each Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon. In addition to the ESL classes, Trinity will be hosting its first CSN HSE (High School Equivalency) class. Preregistration and individual evaluations have been done and the HSE class began on March 23 and will continue until June 10. This class meets in Room 6 in the Education Building each Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon. We are excited to be able to have Trinity serve the community in this manner. Each class averages about 20 students. At this time, it is not anticipated classes on the church campus will be held during the summer months. If you know of anyone who might be interested in attending either of these classes in the fall, please contact Jo Ann Magner in the church office on Monday through Thursday at Currently, church volunteer Manuel Astete continues his ESL classes on Saturdays from 9 am to noon in Room 5 in the Education Building. Flags for the Labyrinth Last year the Home Based team was responsible for placing flags around the labyrinth for Memorial Day, and keeping them up through Flag Day and July 4. This will be done again, only this year flags will be placed around the entire labyrinth. If you haven t yet walked the labyrinth, make time to do so. All bricks have been placed in the ground. Remember, you can order a brick in honor of someone s birthday, wedding, anniversary, graduation, etc. You can also order them in memory of a loved one. Or place a brick with a favorite Bible verse. Order forms are available on the Information Kiosk near the front doors leading to the Sanctuary, or you can call the church office for more information at VOL U M E 1 5, I S SU E 3 P AGE 5

More Changes Coming Yes! More changes are coming to Trinity. The Vietnamese Congregation has moved into the where their worship area will be located in the back half of the room. The front half of the room will remain a meeting area. The will be moving to Room 4 in the Education Building. The current room next to Café Trinity will be renamed Room 11. 10 Trinity UMW Enjoy Friendship Luncheon The Trinity United Methodist Women held their annual Friendship Luncheon on Sunday, March 1 with over 60 women attending the event, including special guests and guest speakers, in the Education building on campus. UMW President Donna Canfield welcomed everyone including special guests Pastor Khalif Smith, his wife Nikki and their daughter Zoe. She introduced the newly installed UMW officers for 2015: Alene Unger (Vice President), Denyse Royer (Secretary), Frances Bower (Treasurer) and Martha Trollier (Program Resources). An extravagant salad bar including garlic sticks and Red Velvet cupcakes was enjoyed by all! The Las Vegas Centennial High School NJROTC students assisted in serving the luncheon. The Korean Methodist Church now shares the Trinity campus; special guest speaker Chong Driscoll presented information regarding the Korean Methodist Women, their focus and their mission. Cathy Poage of the TUMC group Crafters for Christ talked about the crafters current and past projects and displayed a variety of merchandise. One of the most interesting crafts Cathy shared was sleeping mats made out of recycled plastic shopping bags. These were created and then given to the homeless. Lynn Mooren addressed the group as the Chairwoman of the Women s event that will be held on May 3. She distributed and collected Woman of the Year forms to allow members to nominate a woman worthy of this honor. Maxine Hoselton and Kathy Vornberg informed the group about the Secret Prayer Partner drawing. Each participant draws a name of a secret prayer partner and then prays for them, sends gifts and greeting cards during the entire year until the Friendship Luncheon the following year. Many final gifts were distributed and women learned who was praying for them in It is a wonderful ministry enjoyed by many mem- Pastor Khalif Smith installs incoming UMW officers (from left) Denyse Royer (Secretary); Donna Canfield (President); Alene Unger (Vice President) and Martha Trollier (Program Resources) during the traditional service on UMW Sunday.
