3 PASTOR S CORNER Sunday, February 12, 2017 Dear Friends at Saint Paul: The American Bishops have a long history of public policy statements on the Catholic moral teaching concerning immigra on and refugee relief. It is wise and balanced perspec ve based on the Church's more general social jus ce teaching over the last century. Many of the references here are links that can be accessed on the Bishop's website: Here is a reprint of the Introductory page on Immigra on. It is my hope that every Catholic would be well informed, not only by the threat that may come to our borders from abroad, but also well-informed by the applica on of the Gospel to such an important current na onal issue. We will NOT get this perspec ve, depth or quality of spiritual reflec on from the news sources! We will NOT be able to take a fully Catholic posi on on this emo onal issue without knowing the teaching of the Church. We can NOT be right without the teaching of the Church, however we may disagree with one another about specific public policy proposals. Please use these resources and pray for the right thing to be done! Prayer is the one element of personal effort without which it is not possible to do the will of God, except by some fluke or by accident. Let's do the will of God on purpose, a er careful reflec on and without emo onal over-reac on. Let's do the will of God with delibera on, a en on, and trust in the loving and reliable care of our Heavenly Father. Peace, Catholic Social Teaching on Immigra on: United States Conference of Catholic Bishops The Catholic Church in the United States is an immigrant Church with a long history of embracing diverse newcomers and providing assistance and pastoral care to immigrants, migrants, refugees, and people on the move. Our Church has responded to Christ s call for us to welcome the stranger among us, for in this encounter with the immigrant, the migrant, and the refugee in our midst, we encounter Christ. A rich body of Church teaching, including Papal encyclicals, Bishops statements and pastoral le ers, has consistently reinforced our moral obliga on to treat the stranger as we would treat Christ himself. In the 2001 pastoral statement, Welcoming the Stranger Among Us: Unity in Diversity, the Bishops of the United States called upon the Catholic faithful to a conversion of minds and hearts, imploring us to communion and solidarity with diverse newcomers, and entrea ng us to find new and meaningful ways to welcome our immigrant sisters and brothers into our parishes, schools and communi es. In 2003, the Bishops of the United States, together with the Bishops of Mexico, in the pastoral statement, Strangers No Longer: Together on the Journey of Hope / Juntos en el Camino de la Esperanza Ya no Somos Extranjeros acknowledged that the current immigra on system is badly in need of reform and offered a comprehensive set of recommenda ons for changing U.S. laws and policies to bring about a more humane and just immigra on system in the United States. Here are just a few of the links that it is possible to research: To learn more about the Church s teaching on immigra on, we encourage you to view the resources linked below: Quotes from Church Teachings on the Rights of Migrants and Refugees Catholic Social Teaching on Immigra on and the Movement of Peoples Church Teaching on Public Policy Related to Immigra on Catholic Church's Posi on on Immigra on Reform The Catholic Church and Immigrant Religious Workers The Holy See s Perspec ve on Catholic Social Teaching and Migra on

Success begins at Saint Paul School! Go Knights! SAINT OF THE WEEK ~ SAINT VALENTINE Saint Valen ne is a third-century Roman saint widely celebrated on February 14 and commonly associated with "courtly love." One common story about St. Valen ne is that as Bishop, he was on house arrest with Judge Asterius. The judge put Valen ne and his faith to the test. St. Valen ne was presented with the judge's blind daughter and told to restore her sight. If he succeeded, the judge vowed to do anything for Valen ne. Placing his hands onto her eyes, God restored the child's vision. Judge Asterius was humbled and obeyed Valen ne's requests. Asterius broke all the idols around his house, fasted for three days and became bap zed, along with his family and en re 44 member household. The now faithful judge then freed all of his Chris an inmates. St. Valen ne was later arrested again for con nuing to try to convert people to Chris anity. He was sent to Rome under the emperor Claudius Gothicus. The story tells that St. Valen ne was imprisoned for marrying Chris an couples and aiding Chris ans being persecuted by Claudius in Rome. Both acts were considered serious crimes. Claudius became enraged and sentenced Valen ne to death, commanding him to renounce his faith or be beaten and beheaded. On the day of his execu on, he le the guard a note signed, "Your Valen ne." St. Valen ne is the Patron Saint of affianced couples, bee keepers, engaged couples, epilepsy, fain ng, gree ngs, happy marriages, love, lovers, plague, travelers, and young people.
