The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? 29 But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn. Wheat ready to harvest What material beliefs can you expel from your thought right now? And what thoughts of Soul can you put in their place? :14 Jesus strips all disguise from error, when his teachings 15 are fully understood. By parable and argument he explains the impossibility of good producing evil; Proof from and he also scientifically demonstrates this great miracles 18 fact, proving by what are wrongly called miracles, that sin, sickness, and death are beliefs illusive errors which he could and did destroy :6 13, 15 16, 19 20, It is sometimes said that Christian Science teaches the nothingness of sin, sickness, and death, and then teaches how this nothingness is to be saved and healed. Nothingness 9 The nothingness of nothing is plain; but we of error need to understand that error is nothing, and that its nothingness is not saved, but must be demonstrated in 12 order to prove the somethingness yea, the allness of. 15 Disbelief in error destroys error, and leads to the discernment of. We treat error through the understanding of, because is error s antidote. Material beliefs must be expelled to make room for 30 spiritual understanding :13 The temporal and unreal never touch the eternal and real. The mutable and imperfect never touch the im- 15 mutable and perfect. The inharmonious and self-destructive never touch the harmonious The tares and wheat and self-existent. These opposite qualities are the tares 18 and wheat, which never really mingle, though (to mortal sight) they grow side by side until the harvest; then, Science separates the wheat from the tares, through the real- 21 ization of God as ever present and of man as reflecting the divine likeness. Tares are a kind of plant, probably darnel, that is mildly poisonous. Darnel and wheat look identical until they are mature when wheat will bend over at the top while tares will not :11 14 The Principle of divine metaphysics 12 is God; the practice of divine metaphysics is the utilization of the power of over error; its rules demonstrate its Science. REAPERS were farm workers who cut grain and then gathered it up to be used or stored. They used scythes to cut the grain and later bundled it. Separating the tares from the wheat was a very hard, time-consuming job. discernment: perception; awareness antidote: remedy; neutralizer mutable: changeable; variable; unstable Look those are pretty. envy No, look closer invasive weeds! Our job is to pull them out, roots and all. error criticism fear jealousy anger pride error malice hate depression revenge error lust regret 4

If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly. 25 Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father s name, they bear witness of me. 12 Matthew 8:5 10, 13 And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him, 6 And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. 7 And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him. 8 The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. 9 For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. 10 When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. 13 And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour. A centurion was a Roman army officer who commanded a company of around 100 men. He might have been more feared than respected by the Jewish people, as he was allowed to tell them what to do in certain circumstances. Christ,, was demonstrated through Jesus to prove the power of 9 Spirit over the flesh, to show that is made manifest by its effects upon the human mind and body, healing sickness and destroying sin :11 The Christlike understanding of 12 scientific being and divine healing includes a perfect Principle and idea, perfect God and perfect man, as the basis of thought and demonstration :1 1 If sickness is real, it belongs to immortality; if true, it is a part of. Would you attempt with drugs, 3 or without, to destroy a quality or condition of? But if sickness and sin are illusions, the awakening from this mortal dream, or illusion, will bring us into health, 6 holiness, and immortality. This awakening is the forever coming of Christ, the advanced appearing of, which casts out error and heals the sick. This is the sal- 9 vation which comes through God, the divine Principle, Love, as demonstrated by Jesus :14 16 You command the situation if you understand that 15 mortal existence is a state of self-deception and not the truth of being :28 Speak the Morality truth to every form of error. Tumors, ulcers, required 30 tubercles, inflammation, pain, deformed joints, are waking dream-shadows, dark images of mortal thought, which flee before the light of. is always the victor :4 (only) What does it mean to speak the truth? What ideas in this section might help? It s been a long hike, and we might be tempted to feel tired, but God gave us dominion over our thinking and our bodies. So we can feel great! If you want to command the situation you can do it through the Christlike understanding of. grievously: painfully; terribly; horribly; sadly command: control; rule; govern self-deception: the practice of hiding the truth from or specifically lying to yourself victor: winner; conqueror 5

6 5 13 Ephesians 6:13 15 take take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; A14 Acts 5:12 (to ;) nd by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; 15 Acts 11:25, 26 (to 1 st.) Antioch (modern Antakya, Turkey) was, in Paul s (Saul s) time, one of the largest cities, and was the first place where followers of Jesus were called Christians :29 Christianity is again demonstrating the Life that is 30, and the that is Life, by the apostolic work of casting out error and healing the sick. Earth has no repayment for the persecutions which 1 attend a new step in Christianity; but the spiritual recompense of the persecuted is assured in the elevation of ex- 3 istence above mortal discord and in the gift of divine Love. 6 The determination to hold Spirit in the grasp of matter is the persecutor of and Love. Christianity still rejected 23 28: :19 22, 24 The Christian Scientist has enlisted to lessen evil, disease, and death; and he will overcome 21 them by understanding their nothingness and the allness of God, or good. 24 The Christian Scientist knows that they are errors of belief, which can and will destroy :12 14, When error confronts you, withhold not the rebuke or the explanation which destroys error. When the spiritual sense of unfolds its harmonies, you take no risks in the policy of error. So put on all of God s armor. Evil days will come. But you will be able to stand up to anything. And after you have done everything you can, you will still be standing. 14 So remain strong in the faith. Put the belt of truth around your waist. Put the armor of godliness on your chest. 15 Wear on your feet what will prepare you to tell the good news of peace. Pilgrim on earth, thy home is heaven; stranger, thou art the guest of God. BARNABAS was prominent as an early Jewish Christian who came from Cyprus to Jerusalem. We first read about him in Acts 4:36, when he and other believers sold their land and gave the money to the apostles to distribute according to the need. Barnabas took Paul in and helped the other disciples get past their fear of this former persecutor of Jesus s followers. I long to see the consummation of my hope, namely, the student s higher attainments in this line of light :31 1 Systematic teaching and the student s spiritual growth and experience in practice are requisite for a thorough 1 comprehension of Christian Science :13 Whoever would demonstrate the healing of Christian Science must abide strictly by its rules, heed every state- 15 ment, and advance from the rudiments laid down. There is nothing difficult nor toilsome in this task, when the way is pointed out; but self-denial, sincerity, Christianity, and 18 persistence alone win the prize, as they usually do in every department of life. Work hard so God can say to you, Well done. Be a good workman, one who does not need to be ashamed when God examines your work. Know what his Word says and means. II Timothy 2:15 The Living Bible reproof: disapproval; condemnation; rebuke consummation: fulfillment; completion rudiments: first principles of or simplest and most basic facts about a subject toilsome: burdensome; fatiguing frail: weak; fragile premises: things thought to be true; assumptions; suppositions imperious: authoritative; powerful; commanding inviolate: pure; holy; indestructible 30 98:15 15 Beyond the frail premises of human beliefs, above the loosening grasp of creeds, the demonstration of Christian Mind-healing stands a revealed and practical Revelation of Science 18 Science. It is imperious throughout all ages as Christ s revelation of, of Life, and of Love, which remains inviolate for every man to understand and to 21 practise. All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching the truth, rebuking error, correcting faults, and giving instruction for right living, 17 so that the person who serves God may be fully qualified and equipped to do every kind of good deed. 8 ASCENDING IN THOUGHT BY COURTLYN HOW DO YOU UPLIFT YOUR THOUGHT? It sounds easy enough just pray, affirming spiritual truths for yourself that you know are helpful! However, I m learning that actually rising above daily struggles can be quite an endeavor. Last summer I had the opportunity to travel to Peru with my DiscoveryBound National Leadership Council (NLC) class, a leadership council for high school students who are Christian Scientists and are dedicated to servant leadership based on the teachings of Christ Jesus. In the weeks leading up to our trip, various class members sent out inspirational s, and throughout our trip we had Christian Science practitioners of the day, which allowed my classmates and me to serve along with our designated Journallisted practitioner as spiritual workers for the class. I d also been praying to feel inspired and know that God is supreme. I knew I could feel protected from any suggestions that something could interfere with my health or joy. At points on our trip, many members of my class, including me, appeared to be suffering from food poisoning. Thankfully, many of my classmates experienced quick healings. When I started to feel ill, immediately one of my group leaders and I began praying and working with passages from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and many of my classmates began sharing spiritual truths with me. That night as my group leader read to me from Science and Health, I prayed with the ideas she was sharing. Pearl Hint: Win the prize! good thoughts I was working with, I began to feel very fearful because I was not able to retain any food or drink, and I was worried what would happen if that continued the next day. We were heading to Machu Picchu in the morning, an excursion that I had been looking forward to since the beginning of the service trip, but there would be no bathroom facilities in the park. The morning of our excursion, most of my classmates woke up excited and ready for a day of hiking, feeling strong and healthy. I woke up still not feeling well but held close to the idea that I am spiritual, made in the perfect image and likeness of God (see Genesis 1:26, 27), and that because of this, suffering and illness were not part of God s plan for me. Only God s harmony could reign supreme, and discord was not part of this trip or me. I had come to Peru to do good and could not be punished for that. As Mrs. I began to feel freer and spiritually empowered. Eddy writes in Science and Health, Whatever it is your duty to do, you can do without harm to yourself (p. 385). While I knew I could stay back if I needed to, I also knew it was a right activity to serve in Peru and experience a joyful day with my NLC class at Machu Picchu, and I realized I could in no way be burdened when I had pure motives. As we arrived at Machu Picchu, our leaders informed us that we would be climbing Huayna Picchu, the smaller of the two mountains that is generally featured in advertisements. I began to worry again, fearing that I was not in the right condition to complete a difficult hike and that I would lag behind my fit and capable class members. For each step up the mountain, I said one of the words in this line, declaring divine Love s perfection and my freedom. Rather than feeling weary and nauseated as I climbed higher, I began to feel freer and spiritually empowered. Part of the third verse from Hymn 136 also came to mind: I climb, with joy, the heights of Mind, / To soar o er time and space (Violet Hay, CSBD). This verse described what I was doing. I was climbing this mountain with joy and dominion the spiritual heights of Mind. I was with my supportive friends, surrounded by divine Love, and could not be deprived of my health. And, I was soar[ing] over time and space, or, in other words, I was uplifting my thought above any material limitations, as I walk[ed] with Love, God, up the mountain! The analogy between climbing and uplifting my thought suddenly became very clear to me as I neared the top. My ascent up Huayna Picchu paralleled the ascension of my thought. As I came closer and closer to the precipice (and the hike became more difficult), my thought rose higher and higher above all mental suggestions that tried to tell me I should feel exhausted, dizzy, nauseated, or incapable. When I reached the peak, I realized I was completely free of all signs of illness, and I knew my thought was at its highest. I had not only conquered hiking Huayna Picchu but I had also prevailed over sickness and made good time, reaching the top around the same time as the majority of my class. Now, whenever I am struggling to overcome a daunting challenge, I remember to uplift my thought and view each struggle not as a hardship but as an opportunity to ascend in thought.
