4 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: As the leaves slowly and gently fill our yards and the autumn chill begins to invade our homes and bodies, we realize that the fall and winter activities are fast approaching. This week I would like to bring some of them to your attention so that you may plan on participating in our parish activities. Next weekend, November 22 and 23, Saint John the Baptist Parish will be holding our annual Christmas Fair. Doors will open at 9:00 AM and continue after the 4:00 Mass and after the 10:00 Mass on Sunday, concluding with the raffle drawings. This annual event is a long standing tradition and important part of our parish life. The members of the committee have been diligently working to make this year s Fair the best one ever!! The Christmas Fair will include a Country Store, Gift Baskets, Baked Goods, Christmas Table, Craft Table and many Raffle Items. It is not too late to assist the fair with your donations of new items for raffle, gift cards, hand crafted goods, Theme Gift Basket, and your time and energy. Those who have organized the Fair will be most happy to accept your assistance and donation. Everyone working together will help make our Fair a success! In the morning Coffee and Donuts will be available. On Saturday, a delicious lunch will be served with homemade chili, hot dogs, chowder and other items. If you are able to assist with the Christmas Fair, with your time or talent, please contact our one of our Fair organizers: Dawn Burnham dawnburnham_pchef@comcast.net, Patti Byrne (pattibyrne@verizon.net), Sally O'Malley, (sallylarry1@verizon.net), Mary Brown (bmimipops@comcast.net), Genevieve Guerin (gilgenesx@aol.com) or Jane Shaw (janegrayw@comcast.net). Volunteers are also needed to assist with the set up of the hall beginning on Wednesday evening, please contact the above to offer your assistance. Next weekend we invite you to assist the work of the Open Door Food Drive by bringing your non-perishable food items to assist in helping those less fortunate. Please bring your gifts and leave them in front of the altar at Mass next weekend. A list of suggested items is elsewhere in the bulletin. Next weekend we will also have the gift tags available for the Annual Christmas Giving Tree. All parishioners are invited to purchase the gift that is suggested on the tag and to return the item to the Church by Dec. 16.All the gifts collected will be used for local families. Last year there was nearly $10,000 in gifts tags and gifts were collected to assist the needy families and children of Essex and Manchester. Many people had a joyous Christmas, because of your generosity. As we have the past few years, we also ask you to remember the retired priests of the Archdiocese by the purchase of a small gift, (gloves, hats, shaving supplies, etc.) and a CVS gift card. We are one the very few parishes that reach out to the retired priests to thank them for their dedication and service to the Church. Many are the last members of their families and are always grateful for the thoughts and remembrance. Thank you for your support. If you know of those who are in need during the holidays, please feel free to contact Fr. Jack. All information is treated with confidence and discretion. "Warm Coats for Cold Weather" The Knights of Columbus are gathering, through Nov. 30, new and gently worn and cleaned coats for those in need this winter. These coats may be left at the rear of the Church on the coat racks provided. Please assist the children and needy of Cape Ann keep warm during the winter months. Mass on Thanksgiving Day will be celebrated at 8:00 AM. in Sacred Heart Church. We will also have the traditional blessing of the bread and any food items you wish to bring. This is a wonderful opportunity to offer thanks to God for the many blessing God has bestowed before we join with family, friends, football games, and Tom Turkey. Peace, Fr. Jack Faith Book Reflection on Today s Readings Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Prov 31: 10-13, 19-20, Ps128 1 Thessalonians 5: 1-6 Matthew 25: From today s Gospel reading: His master said to him, Well done my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Reflection: We are grateful for our faith, it has seen us through very difficult times; but the parable urges us not to get too cozy. Faith isn t just about believing in Jesus, but in following him. Our faith can urge us to leave our personal comfort zone. Risk-taking faith would invite us to invest in situations that may be beyond our usual horizon, but urgently need our presence and action. So we ask ourselves: Are we keeping our faith too close to our vest? What venture is God asking us to undertake in Jesus name? 4
5 St. John the Baptist Annual Christmas Fair Saturday, November 22, :00 am to 4:00 pm The Committee is busy making plans for this annual fund-raising event and looking for help from everyone in the parish to make it a success. If you can knit, sew or crochet, put together a gift basket, make candles, soaps or crafts, create holiday decoration and gift items, have NEW gift items, bake beans and cookies, jellies and preserves or perhaps donate those unused gift cards, these are just a few ideas that will make the fair a big success. New ideas are always welcome. Coffee and donuts will be served in the morning and a chowder lunch will be served by the Buckley family. The fair will continue after the 10:00 Mass with the drawings taking place. Anyone wishing to help at the fair should contact the committee: Mary Brown, Dawn Burnham, Patti Byrne, Genevieve Guerin, Sally O Maley or Jane Shaw. Please stop by the Cafe after Mass to enjoy some refreshments and socialize with friends, old and new. All parishioners are encouraged to attend. We will also be having regular conversations that will include religious upbringing tips for parents (of all ages) and other relevant suggestions during the social. This is a great opportunity for parents, grandparents, and those wanting to become parents to share and bond. Sacred Heart Parish Outreach Mission - The Sacred Heart Parish community has begun the parish-wide outreach mission. Our mission is to reach new people, those that are no longer attending Mass here, and those that attend Mass but have not participated in any type of ministry and help them feel an integral part of this community. If you know someone who may be a potential guest, please extend a personal invitation to join us; for Mass, coffee, or come to one of our functions. If you have any questions, please contact Joey Gustafson at , Karen Cunningham at , or Chris at the Parish office. The coffee hour after the 8:30 AM Mass has been a great source of meeting and welcoming all. RCIA - If you have any questions regarding your faith, are looking to receive your Sacraments, or know someone who might be interested in learning more about what is involved in becoming a Catholic, please contact Chris at the parish office. Some thought provoking questions that may come to mind are why be a Catholic today? And what does it mean to be a Catholic today? Or, what can I do to receive all of my Sacraments? If you or someone you know is interested, please join us after the 8:30AM Mass on Sunday, November 16 in the rectory. RCIA will be participating in the Rite of Welcoming on Sunday, November 30, at the 8:30 AM Mass. This is the first time our candidates will be formally welcomed into our faith community. Your prayers for these people are welcomed as well as your words of encouragement.. Mary s Circle - Mary s Circle has begun. We have an interesting lineup with discussions focused on the Mass, the Gospel readings and its relevance to our daily lives, the Saints, and other varied discussion topics. This year we will have a couple of morning retreats, open to all women. Details will follow. Please extend an invitation to someone you know who might be interested in a women centered, faith-sharing group. We have read books, had guest speakers, and enjoyed a couple of social gatherings...please consider this a personal invitation to consider joining this group of faith-filled women as we explore the different aspects of our faith and how it connects to us in relevant and familiar ways. Coffee, Confections, and Conversation are the orders of the day. Call Chris at the parish office for more information. Prayer Shawl Ministry - Another group of prayer shawls will be blessed at the 8:30AM Mass on Sunday, November 16, We have a huge basket of prayer shawls we would love to give away. Whether it is a physical illness, a psychological situation, or you know someone who is suffering from a loss of any kind, why not bring him or her Prayer Shawl? Prayers and blessings for their needs will surround and comfort them. We are continuing to knit and crochet prayer shawls to give to those in need. Many people have given prayer shawls to family, friends, and loved ones; and have shared with us the peace they feel when they put the prayer shawls around them. If you know anyone who would like a prayers shawl and having a lot of prayers wrapped around them, please let us know. You may contact Chris at the parish office or Gloria Landy, Jane Shaw, Eleanor Hatcher, Sally O Malley, Ann Nadeau, Eileen Hardy, Kathy Anderson, Paige Donohoe, Dorothy Jodice, Ann Henrickson, or Barbara Stasium. The Prayer Shawl ministry meets on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 4PM in the Sacred Heart Rectory......If you cannot join our ministry, please consider donating money, yarn (preferably soft yarn), or gift bags (to distribute them in). All donations are graciously accepted. We are always looking for more knitters and crochet ers! Experience is not required. Please consider being a part of this ministry. Consider joining us, or making one in the privacy of your home. We have easy to follow patterns. Ministry to the Homebound and Sick - Ministry to the Homebound and Sick is growing and it is thanks to your personal connections with those who may be ill and unable to attend Mass. We have an awesome, faith-filled team dedicated to bringing Eucharist to the sick and homebound. Please continue to let us know if you are aware of someone ill, homebound, or alone that would like to receive Eucharist, or a short visit from a fellow parishioner, please contact Chris at the Parish Office and we will make arrangements. Baptism Prep Classes - Baptism preparation classes are being held in the Chapel at Sacred Heart Church and is currently offered the fourth Thursday of the month at 7:00PM. The baptism prep class for November will be on November 6th, at 7PM in the Chapel at Sacred Heart. These classes are designed for parents and godparents of children about to be baptized. The goal of the class is to help parents become aware of the theological and historical reasons for baptizing your child and the significance of Baptism as a beginning, not an end, to a lifelong commitment. Ministry of Consolation: Our parish has a group of volunteers willing to sit and talk with someone after a loss. We have met with several people in the past year and their response has been very positive. 6
