4 Class Project: Inductive Study of 2 Corinthians 4:1-18 Goal: Learn how to use the Inductive Bible Study Method and be transformed through the study of the assigned passage. Materials: Bible, notebook, pen/pencil, commentary, and the Holy Spirit Objective: At the end of the course you should be able to look through your notebook and see all categories of the Inductive study method. You should understand how to effectively study the Bible. You should also have at least one application for you and the Holy Spirit to work on.

7 Main categories of Bible study methods Inductive Ask, meditate, draw conclusions through personal investigation. Requires investigatory analysis of data, which is internalized, and worked on by the Holy Spirit. Works well in small groups and teaches the student to discern truth from error, with reliance on the Holy Spirit. Time consuming. Deductive Listen to others conclusions, rely on external data sources, determine validity. Told what to think about topic by a teacher who has been taught by the Holy Spirit. Works well for large groups to teach what God s Word says. No time spent in God s Word.

8 Types of Bible Study Verse Analysis Analytical Synthetic Topical Character/Biographical The study of a single verse in its immediate context. The study of a passage/chapter in the context of the book. Study of a book in the context of similar Biblical literature, or, entire Bible. The study of a particular topic. The study of a certain person or people group.

9 Summary of the Inductive Bible Study Method Observation Correlation Interpretation Application Play the role of an investigator. Make note of facts and figures. Ask the who, what, where, why, when, and how type of questions in your observations. (Deut. 4:7-9, 29; Matt. 7:7-8) Group your observations into related blocks. Create a heading and summary statement of the group. (Acts 13:27-31; ) Describe what the passage means; look for themes, lessons, morals, and teachings. (Luke 24:26-27; 2 Peter 2:19-21) Identify what God is teaching you through the passage and how to act on the lesson. (Rom. 2:13; James 1:22; 2 Tim 3:16-17) Romans 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
