1 GOOD NEWS FROM LUHER MEMORIAL June 2016 PASTOR S CORNER As of Mother s Day, I have officially joined the Fitbit craze. It s trending right now that many people are using Fitbit activity trackers (or different brands like it) to get healthy. They keep track of every step you take and so much more. All this has inspired enthusiasm and new success to make fitness and better health habits part of our everyday lives. Most of us have made 10,000 steps our daily goal. Some have connected with others through social media and the Fitbit challenges. Doing this offer words of encouragement and challenge to each another, and people share their missteps and victories. I saw a report that the Fitbit technology is helpful, but the real benefit is the social interaction that happens around them. That is, it gives people a prompt to encourage, challenge, and connect with each other. Former Presiding Bishop Hansen talked about the importance of wellness and health in the church, The church s commitment really makes me feel supported toward wellness rather than shamed into it. He described how we work as a church, together. He said, I think we ve found a path, and now we re invited to walk on it together. We ve got to get over the idea that wellness is something we do on our own. What is it that makes us better together? God created us to take care of each other. This is our need, this is our purpose, and so there is great power in being vulnerable to each other and inherent weakness when we pretend to be invulnerable or completely independent. Our purpose is to be vulnerable to each other, to empower each other no matter what. Brene Brown is a researcher and story teller that studies the human need to find connection with others. She also talks about the paralysis of shame and that can keep us feeling disconnected. She says that the power of believing that you are worthy of love and belonging is to embrace our vulnerability (our imperfections). This allows us to practice compassion with others and connect with authenticity. You can check out her TED talk at: As the Fitbit reminds us to exercise daily and often, to take care of ourselves and each other. To commit in a concrete way to self-care and the care for others let us remember that this is the heart of church. Too often we seek to be numb rather than vulnerable. Too often we seek certainty, the feeling of being right, rather than the vulnerability of open-mindedness. God s heart was exposed in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. God was willing to become vulnerable in order that we might understand God s love more fully and the forgiveness given more completely. May we embrace our vulnerabilities; trust that we are worthy and belong; and reach out in compassion to connect as a church with our community and the world! Pastor Elisa Brandt

Please join us in celebrating the accomplishments of these fine students. High School: Megan Rupnik Megan is graduating from DDHS. She is going to Ripon College to study psychology Kayla Yakes Kayla is graduating on June 9th from DDHS. She will be attending Gateway College in Elkhorn this fall to pursue a Vet-Tech career. Michelle Johnson Michelle is graduating from DDHS. She is going to Marian University in fond DE Lac to study early childhood and elementary education. Jace Banasik Jace is graduating from DDHS. He is going to UW-Whitewater to study music education/choral direction. Lauren Hamell Lauren is graduating from DDHS. She plans to work and attend gateway tech to get her required classes for the first year. Then possibly transferring to UWM or Columbia College in Chicago to study creative writing. College: Michael Vander Zee Michael graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison on Friday, May 13th. with a BA in English Literature. He is enrolled in the Masters of Science Program for Secondary English Education at UW-Madison.

Friday, June 17th Admission cost is $18.00 (includes a hot dog, chips and soda lunch) plus $6.00 for parking. We meet in the Church parking lot at 8:00 AM to arrive at Noah s Ark before 10:00 AM, Park opening time. We must enter as a group making one payment to receive the special pricing so your $18.00 admission cost will be collected at the Church before we leave. After entering the Park, everyone is free to spend the day as they wish. Anyone interested in enjoying a day in the water at this special price please sign-up on bulletin board. Council affirmed the following on May 23rd: Michelle Hetzel who has taught confirmation all of the students who shared special music during worship Inreach Committee in organizing and putting on a splendid tea for Mother s Day Inreach who organized the dedication of Barb s Bench along with Scott and Matt who moved it to the location for that day Scott and Lorri Emmerich for representing LM at the Synod Assembly Carol Ancevic and Dolores Grover who organized the funeral luncheon along with all who made dishes and helped serve that day Jeff Horne who puts in many hours as treasurer. Thankful for his gifts and skill set confirmands who worked hard and affirmed their faith along with the support of their parents who helped get them there Matt Huebner who organized spring clean up day and the help of Mike M., Scott E., Brent E., Jeff H. and Milt A. A special thank you to our high school volunteer students who helped with the Spring clean up. BackRow who went the extra mile to play for the memorial service of Denise Robinette all of our congregants who were able to stay for the service thank you to Pastor Elisa for performing the dedication of Barb's bench. thank you to all those who donated during the Mother s Day tea which will go toward the landscaping around Barb's bench. those who donated items for the rummage sale all of the Grandma Quilters who organized the rummage sale and for the wonderful ministry that they provide Join Us! The Holy Spirit who calls, gathers, and empowers the church, the community of believers, to be in the world. We believe that all people are sinful and have fallen short in our relationship with God. Therefore, by God s grace, meaning God s unconditional love for us, and through our faith, we receive salvation. We cannot earn it in any way. Though we receive God s grace every day, we also receive and acknowledge grace through the sacraments of Holy Baptism and Holy Communion. Baptism is a gift from God welcoming all people to become a part of God s family, granting forgiveness and eternal life. Because this is what God does for us, we baptize people of all ages including infants and children. Communion is a gift from God that through the real presence of Christ, all may receive assurance of forgiveness and salvation as well as being united with all Christians of every time and every place.
