10 THE TRUTH ABOUT DEATH! Pastor, my Doctor just informed me that I have less than six (6) month to live. Can you tell me WHAT TO EXPECT when I die? DEATH --- THE REALITY I suppose all of us have, at one time or another asked ourselves the same question. Back in the DEPTHS OF OUR MIND, it s there, isn t it? What is it like to die? What happens TO ME when I die? It s hard to imagine that the body lying in the casket IS OURS, but unless Jesus returns in our lifetime, DEATH IS INEVITABLE! SO, WHERE CAN WE TURN FOR ANSWERS? Religion gives little hope. In fact, most churches and denominations ACTUALLY ADD TO our problems at death, instead of giving us the truth from God s Word! Most churches TEACH US that IT WAS GOD who took our friend or our loved one! They will tell you that your sickness IS FROM GOD and that He is trying to teach you something, or that you HAVE BEEN CHOSEN to suffer for Him! Listen to them the next time you attend a funeral. They will say something like, God knows best, or in the death of an infant, God picked a flower for His bouquet, as if God HAD KILLED the departed! 11

11 No, religion WILL NOT DO at death. Only Christianity will do at a time like this because Christianity GIVES ANSWERS and answers GIVE HOPE! And hope is what we need, NOT SOME RELIGIOUS JARGON! DEATH IS THE WORK OF SATAN! John 10:10 The thief (false shepherds) cometh not but TO KILL, (to) STEAL AND (to) DESTROY; I (Jesus, the TRUE Shepherd) AM COME that they (you and I) may HAVE LIFE and life MORE ABUNDANT. Satan is just the opposite of Christ. Jesus WANTS THE BEST for us IN THIS LIFE and eternity with Him IN THE FUTURE! Satan has one job, to CONTAIN US, or keep us FROM ENJOYING the abundant life that IS ALREADY OURS through Christ! He uses FALSE SHEPHERDS to help him KILL, STEAL AND DESTROY the children of God! And unless WE KNOW OUR RIGHTS as a child of God, Satan will keep us from THE ABUNDANT LIFE of health and prosperity EVEN THOUGH we are saved! He CAN kill, steal AND destroy, but ONLY TO THE DEGREE of our stupidity of the Word of God AND TO THE DEGREE that we FAIL TO USE that Word in our lives! The ONLY POWER Satan has is the foothold we give him in our lives! Everything bad that happens to us in this life IS CAUSED by our lack of knowledge of the Word of God, or, even 12

12 worse, our refusal TO USE and apply the Word WE DO KNOW! This is the foothold Satan uses and WHY we are instructed to give NO PLACE to the Devil! Ephesians 4:27 Neither GIVE PLACE to the Devil. In other words, Don t give Satan AN OPPORTUNITY or a place to work in your life! Now, would God tell us TO DO something that we are NOT CAPABLE of doing? NO! It is Satan who kills our families, steals our blessings and destroys our lives, NOT GOD! But it is because WE ALLOW him to do these things and not because Satan has these AWESOME POWERS that we can t resist! WE CAN RESIST HIM and break through into the ABUNDANT LIFE Christ wants for us all. Listen to Him: 3 rd John 2 Beloved, I wish (this is my will for you) ABOVE ALL THINGS (more than anything else) that you MAY PROSPER and BE IN HEALTH, even as YOUR SOUL prospers. So, everything bad comes from Satan, THROUGH OUR IGNORANCE of the Word, and everything good comes from God, THROUGH OUR APPLYING the Word in our lives! Now, with ALL THIS firmly in place, let s continue with your question. 13

13 AFTER SATAN KILLS, THEN WHAT? All that goes into the grave is our Earth Suit, our body. Luke 16: says, There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: (20) And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, (21) And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. (22) And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; (23) And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off and Lazarus in his bosom. Some would have us believe the above Scriptures are a parable but parables DO NOT name names! Note please: 1. The rich man (Dives, as my grandfather called him) 2. Lazarus 3. Abraham Again, parables DO NOT name names and these verses DO, so they are actual events and describe real people. However, even if they were in parable form, they would still be using things we know to teach a spiritual truth and therefore, would be exactly as described by the Holy Spirit! So, let s let God teach us what He wants to teach us! 14

14 HERE GOD UNVEILS THE UNSEEN WORLD! In these verses, God OPENS OUR EYES to the spirit world and permits us to glimpse in! We ARE PERMITTED to see life after death. We have two (2) men who have passed away. Their bodies are buried BUT EACH OF THEM STILL EXISTS! Before their bodies hit the ground, they were in the spirit world, there to ever be! My friend, it is STILL THE SAME TODAY when we die. Why? Because we ARE NOT a body with a soul and a spirit, but rather, we ARE Spirit Beings with a soul and a body. 1 st Thessalonians 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are SPIRIT BEINGS because our Creator IS SPIRIT, and like produces like, or after it s kind according to the LAW OF GENESIS: Genesis 1:24-27 And God said, Let the Earth bring forth the living creature AFTER HIS KIND, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the Earth AFTER HIS KIND: and it was so. (25) And God made the beast of the Earth AFTER HIS KIND, and cattle AFTER THEIR KIND, and every thing that creepeth upon the Earth AFTER HIS KIND: and God saw that it was good. (26) And God said, Let US (plural) make man IN OUR IMAGE, AFTER OUR LIKENESS: And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the foul of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the Earth, and 15

15 over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the Earth. (27) So God created man IN HIS OWN IMAGE, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them. John 4:24 God IS a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and truth. So, the LAW OF GENESIS says that Like produces like, or after its kind. And, since God IS SPIRIT, whatever He produces must ALSO be Spirit, since LIKE PRODUCES LIKE. THE WORLD IS OUR EXAMPLE! When we see an apple, we KNOW it came from AN APPLE TREE! When we see a grape, we KNOW it came from A GRAPE VINE! Why? Because everything PRODUCES AFTER ITS KIND. Now, a red apple and a green apple DID NOT come from the same tree but they ARE from the same family. They are both apples. We are not only SPIRIT BEINGS, but we are LIKE God, or in His likeness. We can do the things He did because we are like Him. Therefore, we are Spirit beings (in His image). We can think like God, talk like God and walk like God. (in His likeness). As Spirit beings, we possess a soul and a body. They belong 16

16 to us just like our cars and our homes belong to us! They belong to us BUT THEY ARE NOT US! It is OUR BODIES that die at death, NOT US! You and I, as Spirit beings, will live forever BECAUSE we were created in the image of God and HE IS ETERNAL! Our living forever has absolutely NOTHING TO DO with whether or not we are saved or lost; good or bad; in or out of our bodies! We will live forever because we are LIKE GOD, a Spirit being, and as such, WILL LIVE FOREVER! LET S STOP AND DEAL WITH SOUL SLEEP! There are good, Godly people who believe that when we die we simply sleep in the grave until the resurrection. It s not that we cease to exist, but rather our soul simply sleeps until Christ returns. While there are several Scriptures they use to teach their belief, everything hinges on our understanding the difference in our flesh and spiritual makeup and the times BEFORE AND AFTER the resurrection of Christ. It is our bodies that die, or sleep; NOT OUR SOUL AND SPIRIT! James 2:26 (NIV) As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead. When we die, our spirit LEAVES THE BODY and goes either to Hell or Heaven. The body WITHOUT THE SPIRIT is dead! QUESTION: How would it be possible for Christ to BRING 17

17 THE SAVED DEAD WITH HIM WHEN HE RETURNS IN THE CLOUDS --- if indeed, we are in our graves asleep? 1 st Thessalonians 4:13-18 (KJS) But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with Him. 15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. 16 For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ (the bodies of the saved shall come forth) shall rise first: 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together (our flesh bodies will be changed) with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words. Here God describes how it will all happen: 1 st Corinthians 15:42-58 (KJS) So also is the resurrection of the dead. It (the body) is sown in corruption; it (the body) is raised in incorruption: 43 It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power: 44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. 45 And so it is written, the first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. 46 Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual. 47 The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven. 48 As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: 18

18 and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly. 49 And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly. 50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. 51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead (bodies) shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53 For this corruptible (body) must put on in-corruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. 54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. 55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? 56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord. The thief on the cross is a perfect example of the separation of the body from the soul and spirit! He body was taken and thrown in the city dump but Jesus told the thief that he would be with Him in Paradise that very day! Luke 23:43 (KJS) And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise. 19

19 It is the body that dies, or sleeps and not the soul and spirit. Every Scripture used to teach soul sleep clearly refers to the body and not the soul and spirit. The body is of the earth and when it dies it will return to the earth from whence it came. The spirit of man is different. It IS NOT of the earth but rather of God, literally the breath of God, and as such, returns to God for final disposition. This of cource means Heaven or Hell, depending on what we have done with Christ. However, it IS the body that we can see and it is natural to associate the flesh with every Scripture that pertains to mankind. A clear understanding of our make-up is the only thing that allows us to get our eyes off the body and on the spirit of man at death. THE CART BEFORE THE HORSE At death, most seem to worship THE BODY rather than THE PERSON that lived in the body, and this should not be! We talk Jesus, but at the death of a loved one, we act as if death IS IT! Today, there IS VERY LITTLE DIFFERENCE in a Heathen death and a Christian death. There seems to be NO TRUST in God. It s as though what He has said in His Word about being absent from the body and being present with the Lord is just some FAIRY TALE! Even that old dead body, where our loved one lived, will be 20

20 resurrected one day! Christ died for US ALL, and therefore, ALL will be resurrected! John 5:28-29 Marvel not at this: for the hour IS COMING, in the which ALL (every dead person, saved or lost) that are in the graves SHALL HEAR HIS VOICE, (29) And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection OF LIFE: and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection OF DAMNATION. A PERSONAL TESTIMONY Here is what will happen to MY BODY when it dies! It will be immediately taken to a Medical Center and any and all WORKING PARTS will be removed and given to whom ever can use them. The unusable parts will then be disposed of, either by burial or cremation. That s it for my body. At death, I will be INSTANTLY with the Lord. 2 nd Corinthians 5:8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. I will KNOW then as I am known now. 1 st Corinthians 13:12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. I will be LIKE JESUS, and so will EVERY OTHER BELIEVER! 1 st John 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and 21

21 it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when He shall appear, we shall be like Him; for we shall see Him as he is. WHY THIS ATTITUDE TOWARD THE BODY? Our bodies are OF THE EARTH and WILL NOT be used again. 1 st Corinthians 15:35-42a (NIV) But someone may ask, How are the dead raised? With what kind of body will they come? (36) How foolish! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. (37) When you sow, you do not plant the body that will be, but just a seed, perhaps of wheat or of something else. (38) But God gives it a body as he has determined, and to each kind of seed he gives its own body. (39) All flesh is not the same: Men have one kind of flesh; animals have another, birds another and fish another. (40) There are also heavenly bodies and there are earthly bodies; but the splendor of the heavenly bodies is one kind, and the splendor of the earthly bodies is another. (41) The sun has one kind of splendor, the moon another and the stars another; and star differs from star in splendor. (42) So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. At the resurrection, we will be given A NEW BODY like the body Jesus has now! Why try to preserve what WILL NEVER be used again?! Anyway, we need to get our eyes OFF THE BODY and death, and get them ON JESUS and the resurrection! 22

22 Reason with me. What difference does it make if it takes a body 1000 years to turn to dust, or if it takes 5 minutes, or 5 seconds, for that matter?! The body IS DUST. It IS EARTH. THE RESULTS ARE THE SAME! It is dead and will never be used again IN ITS PRESENT STATE. It IS NOT our loved one. It was simply the EARTH SUIT they lived in while here on Earth! We will pay our respects TO THE PERSON and to OUR GOD. He has something MUCH BETTER for us anyway! Following the death of my body, and its disposition, there will be A PROMOTION SERVICE, either at my church or at my home, and perhaps both. It will be a time of FOND MEMORIES and a time of PRAISE AND WORSHIP! It will be a time of REJOICING for me because, FINALLY, all that I have lived for since I was a 13 year old boy in Atkins, Arkansas, HAS COME TO PASS! I AM NOW with Jesus! HALLELUJAH! This is how a Christian should go, taking something that Satan meant FOR HARM, and turning it into SOMETHING 23

23 GREAT for God! Oh, sure, I ll be missed. Sure, there will be an EMPTY SPACE and there will be the suffering that goes with losing a loved one, but the suffering WILL NOT be for me, for I WILL BE with Jesus! THE DEATH OF BENJAMIN FREDRICK DUVALL I was only twelve (12) years old when my grandfather, Preacher Fed died. He and Big Mama had moved in with us when he had his stroke and had to stop preaching. Pa was a small man of stature and Big Mama was even smaller, but they were giants inside! We lived in a three room shotgun home. Buy this, I mean you could stand at the front door and shoot through the house and out the back door, without hitting anything! The night of his death, he looked around that front room where he and Big Mama slept and asked, Lester (my dad and his son), where did you get the money to move us in this mansion? It is so beautiful and the light is so bright! He also kept asking, Son is it 2:30 yet? I remember looking around that room and at that single drop cord light and thinking, What is he talking about? Now, our home WAS clean but beautiful? No. And the light WAS better than the old kerosene lamps we once had, but not THAT much better! But now I know we were not looking at the SAME ROOM 24

24 AND THE SAME LIGHT! I was seeing in the physical world. I was looking at our bare 2 by 4 walls and the one small light bulb hanging from the ceiling. Grandpa was looking at his mansion and the light of the world, Jesus! And at 2:30 AM sharp, Pa looked over at Big Mama and said, Hold me babe, hold me, AND HE WENT TO BE WITH JESUS! He even knew the time of day he was going home! This is the way a Christian is supposed to go! Hallelujah! BUT WHAT ABOUT THE LOST? Jesus lived, died and was resurrected FOR EVERYONE, not just those of us who would follow Him. Therefore, EVERY PERSON, saved or lost, will be resurrected and get a NEW BODY when Jesus returns. The saved, those who have put their personal trust in the atonement Jesus made for ALL PEOPLE, will GET TO KEEP their resurrected bodies and use them forever. However, the lost, those who DID NOT accept Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and Lord, WILL LOSE THEIR NEW BODIES! This is called THE SECOND DEATH. Revelation 20:6, Blessed and holy is he that HAS PART in the first resurrection: on such the SECOND DEATH 25

25 hath no power, but they shall be Priests of God and of Christ, and SHALL REIGN with Him a thousand years. Revelation 20:13-15 adds, And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged EVERY MAN (person) ACCORDING TO THEIR WORKS (how they lived their lives). (14) And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This IS the second death. (15) And whosoever was not found WRITTEN IN THE BOOK OF LIFE was cast into the lake of fire. DEATH REFERS TO THE BODY Just as the FIRST DEATH refers to THE DEATH OF THE BODY, so does THE SECOND DEATH! It is the Spirit, the REAL you and me, that will spend eternity, either WITH JESUS where He is, or WITH SATAN where he is! DON T FEAR DEATH! As we have shown, death FOR THE SAVED means they are instantly in the presence of God and will be with Him forever. Weep for your loss but rejoice for the person departing. They HAVE BEEN promoted! Anyway, you will see them again, that is, if you have received Christ as your PERSONAL SAVIOR. At all cost, LET GOD LEAVE YOUR NAME IN THE BOOK OF LIFE! Revelation 22:19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. 26

26 BE AT PEACE Perhaps your departed loved one DID NOT live for Christ. At least, there was NO OUTWARD SIGN and you are unsure as to where they went at the death of their body. Even if your loved one seemed to hate God or would have nothing to do with church going, DON T DESPAIR! Do you know what secret communion anyone has with God? NO! We only see the surface of their lives. We DO NOT know their heart, BUT GOD DOES! How long does it take God to save someone? Be assured that God WAS READY to save them (2 nd Peter 3:9) just as soon as they called upon Him (Romans 10:13) and that COULD TAKE PLACE in the twinkling of an eye! 2 nd Peter 3:9 (KJV) The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. Romans 10:13 (KJV) For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. This is what the thief on the cross did. He merely said, Remember me when your kingdom comes. Watch this: Luke 23:42-43 (KJV) And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. (43) And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, 27

27 Today (not when the body is raised) shalt thou be with me in paradise. Jesus KNEW HIS HEART and saved him instantly! It could have been the same with your loved one. However, NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENED, your loved one MADE THE DECISION and are today WHERE THEY CHOSE to be. Give them that privilege. Love their memory and HONOR THEIR DECISION.
