1 1 Sunday, August 14, th Sunday in Ordinary Time JESUS AND THE OLYMPIC FIRE: There is a very clear parallel between what Jesus says in this weekend s Gospel and the Olympics and the Olympic fire. He says, I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing! There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until it is accomplished. God s Olympic fire and torch is very much at the heart and mission of Jesus for us and for our world. In the Gospel, he tells us you are the light of the world, you are to let your light shine before others so that seeing your good deeds they may give glory to the Father who is in Heaven. Through the gift of our faith we are all God s Olympic torch-bearers. When we were baptized we received a lighted baptismal candle, lighted from the Easter candle (our Olympic fire ). We are all through the gift of our faith God s Olympic torch-bearers in the Olympic stadium of life. The following poem which I penned some years ago entitled, The Olympic Torch is a reflection on God s Olympic fire and torch-bearers. It is among 120 of my published poems in the book entitled The Poet Within. The book is available for purchase from the parish office. The Olympic Torch The Olympic torch Is raced across the world. Runners bear its fiery flame With a graced and passionate sense of urgency. It finally enters the gigantic stadium To the welcoming cheers of the vast crowd. There is wonder and awe in the ritual As the flaming torch ignites the Olympic fire. The run of the Olympic torch, Symbolizes another universal runner and light. This torch-bearer proclaims I am the light of the world. He proclaims his followers to be torch-bearers Your light in the Olympic stadium of life Must shine before others That they may give glory to my Father. True glory, not passing glory More than, much more than, passing fireworks and the Olympic fire. There is true glory, wonder and awe In the universal torch-bearer igniting His fiery furnace of love. Jesus, our universal torch-runner Invites us to run with his fiery flame. We are to run with a graced and passionate sense of urgency And compete in the stadium of life with hearts aflame. Tomãs õ Cathalãin OUR PARISH MISSION AND PURPOSE: Pope Francis in his following definition of the parish captures some of our mission and purpose, The parish is the presence of the Church in a given territory, an environment for hearing God s word, for growth in the Christian life, for dialogue, proclamation, charitable outreach, worship and celebration. In all its activities the parish encourages and trains its members to be evangelizers. It is a community of communities, a sanctuary where the thirsty come to drink in the midst of their journey, and a centre of constant missionary outreach. -The Joy of the Gospel, Paragraph 28. The acronym MCS is a summary form describing what we are about as a parish according to the definition of Pope Francis. We are about proclaiming, living and striving to live the Biblical message - the Good News of Jesus Christ. When the message of Jesus is received and lived in our lives, it shapes and forms us into a unique community - the parish where He dwells among us Where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am in their midst. Jesus came to serve, not to be served, so the community of the Church established by Him is to be a living, servant and serving community in the world. The definition of a parish by Pope Francis is featured on the front cover of the bulletin each week for our reflection. Our MCS acronym on the purpose of the parish Message, Community, Service highlights this. A question for us as parishioners might be Is MCS an integral part of my faith life as a parishioner? If so, how? If not, why not? THE HEART OF OUR ACTIVE FAITH PRACTICE: Personal relationship or encounter with Jesus is at the very core of our faith. Many of our parishioners found the book Rediscover Jesus most enlightening and helpful around this focus. Through the gift of our faith nourished especially through active prayer practices, we are called into personal encounters with Christ. These encounters are at the very heart of our present parish mission statement. Filled with the Joy of the Gospel, our parish proclaims an ongoing encounter with Jesus Christ through Word, community, Sacrament and loving service. The mission statement can be personalized as follows: Filled with the Joy of the Gospel, as a Catholic, I, joyfully proclaim an ongoing encounter with Jesus Christ through Word, community, Sacrament and loving service. Copies of this personalized mission statement are available of the vestibule of the church and in the back of the daily chapel.

Whether you got divorced ten days ago or ten years ago, the program offers valuable insight for everyone. Call Felicia or Hank at , or to cdsgtucson@yahoo.com. SUNDAY MASS TIME CHANGE BEGINNING SEPTEMBER 11TH: After much consultation with the pastoral staff, our Liturgy & Worship Commission and our Parish Ministries Council, our 12:15 Sunday Mass will sustain a time change in the early fall to 12:30. We have had many complaints over the years about the narrow window of time in between the 10:45am and 12:15pm Masses on Sunday. So often there tends to be a traffic jam within the church and in the parking lot between these Masses, and very little time to prepare adequately for the 12:15 Mass. We look forward to seeing you at the 12:30 Mass beginning on September 11th. 2 Christian Education / Formation Scripture Reflection August 14, th Sunday in Ordinary Time Luke 12:49-57 A brother or sister marry in another church or change political parties. Suddenly family conversations take painful or hostile turns that weighs us down in our differences and distance us from our ties. Soon one family member is not talking to another. These are familiar divisions. The Gospel this Sunday has Jesus saying that he comes to bring fire to the earth and division. These verses are among the hard sayings in the gospels that cause us to scratch our heads. Usually we characterize Jesus as meek and gently. Sunday s Gospel is part of a chapter in which Luke is helping his community deal with the delay in Jesus return to bring about the kingdom of God. Luke recognizes that love for Jesus and adherence to his ways do not dispel divisions among us; in fact, sometimes the divisions result from our adherence to cherished beliefs. At the Synod of the Family that met in 2014 and 2015, Pope Francis invited the Church today into tough conversations that air differences. In his follow up to the synod, Amoris Laetitia (the Joy of Love), Pope Francis places the issues that divide us and divide our families in the context of the Year of Mercy (which still continues on until the end of November 2016). He invokes his principle that time is greater than space; he favors processes that make room over time for mercy and grace to work in our lives. ***What debates or divisions arise most frequently in your familiar circles? Did You Know The greatest of all saints, Mary the Mother of God, was given to us to be our spiritual mother by Christ himself while on the Cross: Behold, your mother! (John 19:27) What Do We Believe About The Assumption Of Mary? The Church believes that Mary was taken body and soul into heaven (leaving no physical remains). Mary s Assumption was celebrated in the early Church, but wasn t proclaimed as dogma until 1950 by Pope Pius XII. This dogma doesn t say whether Mary experienced death prior to her Assumption, but our tradition favors the theological opinion that she did. Mary s Assumption is significant for all of us, as a reminder of the bodily resurrection we will experience at the end of time. The Feast of the Assumption is celebrated on August 15. Please call Laura Stehle at for additional information. Catechist Day of Prayer and Training For New & Returning Catechists Saturday, August 27th 8:30am 3:30pm Where and how is GOD calling you today? The OMOS community is very supportive of our teens. You pray for us, you support us financially, you donate food and other items, and we sincerely appreciate your ongoing generosity. But now it is crucial to our ministry to ask for something more. We are asking that you prayerfully consider donating one year in loving service to OMOS Life Teen. You don't need to know how to pray "properly". You don't need to know how to give talks. Doesn't matter if you can sing or not. It's fine if you are a parent, it's fine if you aren't. These qualities and talents would be appreciated and welcome, but the only real requirements are that you live your life faithfully according to our Catholic faith, you love the Lord above all and you have a heart for teens. We can train you to do the rest! Please contact our volunteer coordinator, Rocio Zamora, at , or rzamora@omosparish.org. To help prepare for the coming year, those interested in becoming Religious Education Catechists/Teachers and those returning as catechists are invited to a day of prayer, sharing, and training. Our gathering will take place Saturday, August 27th beginning with the 8:30am Mass. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. This is a wonderful way to prepare for the new year Catechist Day of Prayer I am interested in becoming a Religious Education Catechist /Teacher or aide. I will or will not be able to attend the Catechist Day of Prayer and Training on Saturday, August 27th in the Parish Hall. Name: Phone Number:
