The Koinonia Faith United Methodist Church 8640 North 19th Avenue Phoenix, AZ Phone: (602) Fax: (602) May 2014 Celebrate! Dry Bones Read the lesson from the Hebrew Bible Ezekiel 37:1-14 that was part of the lectionary from April 6th. I did not really use it as part of my sermon on God s Promise of New Life, but it does speak to the topic nonetheless. After reading it, I want you to use it as a metaphor in a similar sense that God revealed to Ezekiel. Think of the bones, the skeleton, as the frame an organization The United Methodist Church, if you would. Then picture the organs, the sinews and the flesh as people that give the frame a form a specific church such as Faith UMC. The voice may be that of the preacher whoever he or she may be at any given time. What we must remember is that no matter how solid or good the above are, the Spirit, the force, the wisdom all come from God. The only other time I preached this prophetic text was when I was a student intern at Hope UMC in Tucson a church about the size of Faith. It, too, struggled financially, had a core of people who did most of the work, and was thought to be on its way out. Their fear was intensified by the fact that both the pastor and their student intern would be leaving in June. I m going to tell you what I told them. For nearly 50 years you have had different voices, different pastors. Each one had a different message; a different style of delivery; a different way of interacting with people. Each one changed the church in some way. There were ups and downs. In the most recent history, Stephen Govett infused creativity and began leading you out of financial distress. The last seven years you have had me. I hope that I can be considered a sustaining force, one that has helped keep the church steady, but vital. Now, however it is time for a new voice; perhaps a new direction; perhaps a new surge of creativity and energy. The organization (UMC) remains. The new minister will give Faith a new voice, but it will be God s Spirit that continues to give the church the wisdom, power and direction. Embrace that and give form to it and continue to be a vital part of God s Kingdom on Earth. Shalom, Pastor Judy CALL TO ARMS! 3 the corner pew: rummaging for God (Thibault, Jane Marie and Richard L. Morgan, Pilgrimage into the Last Third of Life: 7 Gateways to Spiritual Growth; pages Copyright From Upper Room Reflections, online 3/26/14.) My husband and I gather with friends once a month for spiritual challenge and support, all of us sharing what we find helpful (or not) in our attempt to grow closer to God. One friend, retired pastor Wayne Anderson, told us of a practice he employs, which he calls rummaging for God in the events of the day. Each night as he lies in bed awaiting sleep, he sifts through the day s encounters with people, the glimpses of nature, the work he has done. He tries to discover where God has shone through, where the Spirit s action in events had gone unnoticed at the time. He says he usually finds so many that he falls asleep before he recalls them all! Looking for evidence of God s activity in our lives has the power to transform our attitude from disappointment with self to ever-growing gratitude toward God, who is intimately involved with us. Many psychologists have found that two powerful characteristics of successful aging are these: (1) willingness to forgive and (2) a strong sense of gratitude. Wayne states that as he practices rummaging for God, he experiences an everincreasing awareness and ability to see God working in the little things of his life during the day as they happen rather than late at night before he sleeps. I invite you to rummage for God throughout your day and your week. Look at each experience that you have as an opportunity to discover where God is in that event. Does it bring you closer to Christ? In what way? Then at night remember these discoveries that you made. 4 Joshua s Journey A few years back, I attended an Emmaus retreat. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. As part of the weekend retreat, a member of the church made a banner for me by hand which declared my life verse, Jeremiah 29:11 For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. This passage is written to the Israelites who were hopeless at their plight of being removed from their homeland. What is being emphasized in this verse is the Israelites may not see that God is there, but God is certainly in control and knows the past, present, and future for God s people. I have to refer back to this passage regularly, for sometimes we don t know the next steps in our lives. Over time, through prayerful discernment, I have identified that I am called to full-time vocational ministry in service to God s church. I have also identified that, although my experiences and past life were difficult to say the least, God will use what I have experienced in an effort to empower and support others who have experienced the same. There are turning points in my life and in this process of discernment, experience, and education in which I have not known where the next domino will fall. However, if I stay in tune with God, I can be assured that God has graciously given me the overview and will guide me along the way, although I don t necessarily know what the next step will be. This guidance has come from a variety of resources and people including those from my past. I have received nurture and guidance from pastors and friends I had in my childhood and adult life, as well as from those in my current experience in the church including Pastor Stephen, Pastor Judy, and my spiritual director. I have not only benefited from the practical feedback that these mentors and the churches have provided, but I have further confirmed what my own heart is experiencing. May Page 3 Wherever we are on our life s path, God is still speaking to us and through others to help us identify whatever that next step is in our journey. What we are called to do is to listen and take heart that God is certainly in control, God s purposes will be fulfilled, and all things will work together for good. We are not called to be oppressed or harmed in our lives. We are called to a life of empowerment so that we can do likewise to others. In God s Graces, Joshua HERITAGE SUNDAY MAY 18 th The theme for Heritage Sunday in 2014 as set by the General Commission on Archives and History is The Church s Heritage in Mission: Remembering the 200th Anniversary of the Death of Thomas Coke. The date is set by action of the General Conference and noted in The Book of Discipline as being Aldersgate Day or the Sunday preceding that day. Thomas Coke ( ) English clergyman and, with Francis Asbury, first Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal church in America. Though remembered primarily as the "Father of Methodist Missions," he was a key figure in the development of Methodism on both sides of the Atlantic in the years before and after Wesley's death. An Oxford trained lawyer turned priest, he openly allied himself with the Methodists in England. As Wesley's right hand man he became President of the Methodist Church in Ireland in 1782, and two years later was appointed "Bishop" for America. As Francis Asbury's uneasily yoked colleague, Coke visited America nine times between 1784 and Education became an important priority for Coke, and he was the mover and shaker behind the establishment of Cokesbury College. He alienated many Americans, however, by delivery anti-slavery sermons. Always deeply interested in missionary work at home and abroad, Coke traveled widely to establish Methodism in the West Indies. Hoping to open Methodist missions in the East Indies, in 1814 he set sail for Ceylon but died on the way.

Palms, Last Supper, Passion, Resurrection HOLY WEEK & Easter As the sun began to ascend Easter Sunday more than two dozen gathered in the Patio Garden to once again celebrate the day of resurrection. It was a culmination of a week of services which called to remembrance the events in Jesus life two millennia ago. Palm / Passion Sunday began with bells, a procession of palms by the youth, and a joyful Hosanna anthem, all of which reminded us of Christ s triumphant entry into Jerusalem. But we were then reminded of how short-lived that was as we heard the first reading of the passion. Maundy Thursday found us remembering the last supper with foot washing and communion. A Tenebrae followed to remind us once more of the Passion which was to come. Good Friday service was a service of meditation on Christ s passion death and burial. Harp music for the prelude and postlude added to the meditative atmosphere. And then.. Easter Sunday! Christ is risen! Beautiful weather and a lovely living cross added to the joyful time. After the sunrise service, which included communion, many stayed for the breakfast served in the Koinonia room. The late service was the Easter Cantata and featured the children s choir and bell choir in addition to the chancel choir. Readings by Janette Martyn and Gary Drown helped to dramatize the meaning of this special time in our church year. Overall an impressive week. Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed! May Page 4

JUDICIAL COUNCIL MEETS The Judicial Council of The United Methodist Church met last week to consider several opinions and rulings regarding sexuality issues. Among the issues considered was Bishop Hoshibata's ruling on July 29, 2013, of the marriage equality resolution passed by the Desert Southwest Annual Conference in June The following information is from several online resources. Same-sex partners can t marry in a United Methodist Church. But if one of the spouses works at one of the denomination s 13 general agencies, the couple can get benefits if state laws allow it. The decision, made at last week s meeting of the UMC s Judicial Council in Little Rock, Ark., affirms one made in October by the church s General Council on Finance and Administration, which expanded the definition of spouse to include same-sex spouses and partners. The decision does not extend benefits to the same-sex spouses and partners of those who work for the church s general agencies in states that prohibit same-sex marriage. Also at its April meeting, the board affirmed that clergy candidates should be allowed a job interview no matter their sexual orientation. The denomination prohibits noncelibate gay clergy. In our Desert Southwest Conference, a marriage equality resolution was passed by the Annual Conference in June, The resolution called for the C onference and its churches to make a public statement supporting and upholding marriage equality and to support clergy who minister to all, including those who celebrate homosexual unions or perform same sex wedding ceremonies, actions that are in violation of church law. Bishop Robert T. Hoshibata ruled the resolution in order July 29 and said it did not legally negate, ignore or violate the Book of Discipline, the denomination s law book. Ma Native American Ministries Sunday reminds United Methodists of the contributions made by Native Americans to our society. The special offering benefits Native American outreach within annual conferences and across the United States and provides seminary scholarships for Native Americans. The Judicial Council struck down part of this gay rights resolution because it supported clergy who performed same-sex weddings. The first Resolved portion of the Marriage Equality Resolution is within Church Law: that the Desert Southwest Conference make a public statement supporting and upholding Marriage Equality. The second Resolved section is null and void and of no effect: that the Desert Southwest Conference will support our clergy who take the bold and faithful stand to minister to all equally and include all in the life of the church, which includes but is not limited to, conducting ceremonies which celebrate homosexual unions; or performing same-sex wedding ceremonies where it is civically legal to do so. The third Resolved section is within Church Law to the extent that its definition of supporting someone spiritually, emotionally and prayerfully is understood not to ignore, negate, or violate Church Law: that the Desert Southwest Conference will support (spiritually, emotionally and prayerfully) clergy who are brought up on charges for conducting ceremonies which celebrate homosexual unions; or performing same-sex wedding ceremonies.

TRUSTEE REPORT April has brought us warmer weather and several new and exci ng addi ons to our campus. First the new ligh ng is well under way in the sanctuary. We have now replaced 30 overhead can lights with our new hanging lights. The new look is fresh and modern. The amount of light has greatly increased which is something we really needed. (There will no longer be a nap me during the sermon por on of our Sunday service.) The new lights are LED and the cost savings will be substan al. Think of it this way: we can now operate the 30 new lights for what it cost us to operate 3 of the old lights. That should amount to a 90% savings in electric usage for the ligh ng of the sanctuary. We will con nue to make upgrades in the ligh ng of our campus and hope to generate addi onal savings. We have completed another sec on of our new fencing. Our latest sec on is located at the northeast corner of our campus which is adjacent to Alice Street. As we con nue with this program it is hoped by the trustees that any concerns will be addressed as soon as received. As to date there have been no formal issues presented we will con nue forward with our work. There has been a sugges on that we upgrade the front gate to improve the appearance beyond a simple wrought iron look. If anyone would care to make a dona on to the capital improvements fund to help make this a reality please do so as soon as possible. The kitchen con nues to be improved and we are now at the point where it can be used without disrup on. The new road is opera ng normally and there seems to be no nega ve impact. The community garden is looking very nice and healthy. There are plans to expand its size in the fall. Thanks to everyone for par cipa ng in this great effort. We will be trying once again this summer to start a new grass in our courtyard. Please pray that we are successful. Thanks to all those who support the many projects completed and underway as well as those in planning. Jerry Dotto, Chair, Board of Trustees SOCKS, SOCKS, SOCKS WE NEED SOCKS! Each year, the Desert Southwest Conference's Board of Global Ministries coordinates an Annual Conference Mission Project. The Conference will come together once again this year to bless others through meeting a basic need. Our Annual Conference Mission Project this year will be a sock collection, challenging all of the different Districts in our Conference to bring packages of socks that will be donated to a non-profit organization in their area. Socks are a basic essential, but access to clean socks is often limited for the homeless walking the streets and living in shelters - one of the least donated but most needed necessities when it comes to homeless health care. Although they're often a limited resource, clean socks are an affordable donation that makes a big difference for those living in shelters and on the streets. This year's sock collection gives the Desert Southwest Conference a chance to come together and bless others with the gift of warm, dry, healthy feet through generosity and competition. The sock collection will be a competition between districts to see who can collect the most socks. To further highlight the drive, at Annual Conference the Celebration of Ministry banquet will be a Sock Hop where everyone will be encouraged to wear their craziest socks to the dinner. You can bring your socks to the church, to the Central West District office, (9849 N 105th Avenue in Sun City), or to Annual Conference. If you would prefer to make a cash or check donation those monies will be used to purchase socks. If you do write a check please make sure to make it out to the Desert Southwest Conference, with Socks Central West District in the memo line. Help our district win this competition as we help those in need! May Page 6

2 ND ANNUAL WALK A THON HELD $1,650 raised to support Imagine NO Malaria campaign On March 29, 2014, at 7am, Faith United Methodist Church held their 2nd Annual, Imagine NO Malaria Walk-a-thon. Faith UMC had 14 individuals walking the 2.6 mile route for Imagine NO Malaria. Mike German manned our water station. The group included 9 adults and 5 youth varying in age from 3 to 13. The walking route was 19th Ave to Northern Ave to 23rd Ave to Alice Ave and then back to the Church for a total distance of 2.6 miles. Five individuals walked the 2nd loop of the route for an additional 1.5 miles. Individuals that walked both loops walked 4.1 miles. The group was small but mighty and we all had fun. Walkers had collected donations from friends and family to support the Conference wide Imagine NO Malaria Campaign. The walkers collected about $1,650. The exact amount will be known after all the funds have been collected. The funds will go to support the Conference wide Imagine NO Malaria Campaign. If you donated to one of the walkers make sure you get your receipt if you need one. It will not be included on your annual giving statement. The Neighborhood Outreach Committee wants to express our appreciation and a thank you to all the individuals that walked, helped, or planned the 2nd Annual Walk-a-thon. A tremendous thanks goes to all the donors who made the walk for Imagine NO Malaria successful. We will be planning another Walk-athon in If you didn t join in the fun this year, plan on joining us in The weather is nice and the distance is a little longer than walking in the Mall. Mike FitzPatrick Excerpted from the World Malaria Report 2013: World wide, between 2000 and 2012, estimated malaria mortality rates fell by 45% in all age groups and by 51% in children under 5 years of age. Nevertheless, between 2011 and 2012, the pace of decrease in estimated malaria mortality rates slowed. This slowing is partly because.. insecticide treated mosquito net (ITN) coverage lattened in following decreases in funding for malaria control in Every year, at least 150 million ITNs are needed to maintain a supply and protect all populations at risk of malaria in sub Saharan Africa. THE PROPHET IN THE CHOIR I was meditating on the idea of we are the salt of the earth and the light of the world, as described in Matthew 5:13-16, and something nagged at me. I kept remembering the ending of an early episode of Star Trek called The Man Trap. It involved a creature that could disguise itself as different people, as it read someone s mind. It needed to absorb all the salt from a person s body. The result, as we cannot live without salt, was that the victim died, horribly. The creature masqueraded as Nancy, the wife of an archeologist and an old flame of the Enterprise s doctor, on a world where the civilization had died out. It killed Nancy two years before, and left the professor alone as long as he gave it salt. In the climax, the creature, in the guise of Nancy, flings Spock against the wall of Captain Kirk s cabin. Dr. McCoy stands paralyzed, holding a phaser, as the creature tries to absorb the salt from Kirk. Spock snaps McCoy out of it, by asking, Is that Nancy, Doctor? McCoy fires the phaser and kills the creature. You must wonder why I would share this. The writer, George Clayton Johnson, hid something under the standard science fiction/ horror plot. Kirk is the Scottish word for church. Nancy, in Hebrew, means Grace. Spock may have looked like Satan, but he asked, Is that grace? as the real evil was on the other side of the room sucking the life out of the Church. McCoy uses concentrated light to defeat that evil. With creative use of imagery, the writer asks us, what evils are sucking the life out the Church as we remain paralyzed by our own prejudices and fears? Howard J. Moses, Chaplain May Page 8

Begin with good materials. Enthusiasm is GOOD! Once more HandsOn Greater Phoenix brought in a group of volunteers for the benefit of the West Alice Community Garden. The purpose of this project was multiple: plant some trees; build a pathway around the perimeter of the garden; build a picnic table; and build support posts for screen cloth to help shield the plots from too much sun. Approximately 25 people from Blue Cross-Blue Shield (down on 23 rd Avenue) were the volunteers for us on April 26 th. What a blessing!! Jane Kriege took the photos you see. Have great volunteers. Now we need the screening. A place to relax after a hard day s work or just to enjoy Desert-friendly trees will do In the meantime, the garden is flourishing. Several people are working their private plots and the community plots as well. Eunice Moses-Moreno and LaVonna Goudie are very active in tending the plants. The Krieges and John Goad are there for all the building projects, and Paula Wolf oversees the general order of events. Be sure to thank them when you see them.
