1 First Look March 5, 2017 March 5, 2017, Week 1 Small Group, Preschool Basic Truth: Jesus wants to be my friend forever. Key Question: How can you love like Jesus? Bottom Line: Memory Verse: Love one another. John 13:34, NIV Bible Story Focus: I can love by helping. Make It Fun (Introductory Activities, 10 minutes) Doctor Match What You Need: Doctor Match Activity Page cut outs What You Do: Before the Activity: Provide two sets of Doctor Match Activity Page cards for each small group. During the Activity: Place each card face down on the floor or table. Ask one child to go first by choosing two cards and turning them over. If they match, remove both cards and set them aside. If they do not match, turn both of the cards back over in the same place. In both cases, allow another child to have a turn. After the Activity: Repeat until all of the matches have been made and every child has had a turn. What You Say: Before the Activity: Let s see if we can make matches! Here there are pictures of items that are used to fix boo-boos. (Point to cards.) We have two of each picture. When it is your turn, you can turn over two cards (demonstrate) and we will see if they are a match! If not, flip them back over and another friend will have a turn. During the Activity: (Choose child to be first.) Turn over any two cards that you would like. (Pause.) Great job! Do you see a match? (Continue with activity until every child has had a turn.) After the Activity: Great job! We found all of the matches! These pictures are of things that we need to fix boo-boos. Today in our story we are going to hear about someone who had a lot of boo-boos! I cannot wait to hear what happened! 2. Bible Story Read The on pages in The Beginners Bible. Curriculum Materials for 3- through 5-year-olds 2015 The rethink Group. All rights reserved. 1

2 First Look March 5, 2017, Week 1 Small Group, Preschool Make It Stick (Application Activities, 15 minutes) 1. Act It Out What You Need: BAND-AIDs, play money, and a box or container What You Do: Before the Activity: Gather the supplies and put them in a box or container in an open area of the room. During the Activity: You will need five children to act out the story: one to play the hurt man, two to play the men who passed by without helping, one to play the Samaritan who stopped to help, and one to play the innkeeper who took in the hurt man. Read the script below and use the box of props to act out today s Bible story. If time allows, select five more children and act the story out again. What You Say: During the Activity: I want us to act out our Bible Story. I need five friends to help me out. (Select five children and assign them their parts.) Okay, I ll read the story as you act it out. Are you ready? (Pause.) Here we go! One day, a man was walking down the road when some robbers attacked him, hurt him, and then left him on the side of the road. (Motion for the hurt man to lay down on the floor.) Oh no, this man needs help. Surely someone will stop! Oh look, here comes someone now. (Motion for the next volunteer to walk by the hurt man without stopping to help.) Oh wait, he didn t stop to help. But this man needs help! Wait, I see someone else. (Motion for the next volunteer to walk by without stopping to help.) Oh, I guess he was too busy, because he didn t stop to help either! But wait, here comes a Samaritan. He probably won t stop. (Hand the last volunteer the BAND-AIDs and encourage him to put them on the hurt man.) Wait! He DID stop. And look, he s giving the hurt man BAND-AIDs. And he s helping the man get to the town where he can see a doctor and get better! (Motion for the two volunteers to slowly move to another part of the room and hand the Samaritan the play money.) Oh and look, he s paying the innkeeper to take care of the hurt man (motion for the last volunteer to take the play money) until he can come back to check on him. That was so nice! The Samaritan loved the man by helping. How about a hand for our awesome volunteers? Thanks, everyone. (Pause and clap.) Great job! After the Activity: Two men passed right by the man who was hurt without stopping to help. But a Samaritan knew that he could love by helping. He loved the man like Jesus loves us, because he stopped to help. He was a good neighbor and a good friend! We can love others by helping too. How can you love like Jesus? 3 First Look March 5, 2017, Week 1 Small Group, Preschool 2. The Doctor Is In What You Need: Construction paper, handle, bandaids, q-tips, gauze, cotton balls, tongue depressors, glue sticks, good Samaritan label, markers/crayons, and tape What You Do: Before the Activity: Give each child a folded piece of construction paper. During the Activity: Have the children add each of the following to their doctor bag (band aid, q-tip, handle, gauze, cotton ball, tongue depressor). Talk about how the good Samaritan helped the sick man. Talk about how each child can help others and show God s love to those around them. What You Say: Before the Activity: Today in our Bible story, we learned about a man who helped someone who was hurt. Now we re going to make our own doctor bags to remind us that we can help people who are hurt too. During the Activity: (Give each child a strip of paper and crayons.) We are going to make a special bag to remind us that we can help someone who may need it, just like the did in our story today. Use the crayons to make your doctor bag look beautiful! (Allow the children to work.) Great job! Now we need to place the items in our doctor bags! (Help kids tape or glue items to their doctor bags and finish the activity.) After the Activity: These turned out great! Now you have something you can carry to remind you that you can help people if they get hurt. Jesus wants us to always love and help each other. Jesus wants us to love EVERYONE! How can you love like Jesus? [Bottom Line] I can love everyone! 3. Books of the Bible What You Do: Review the books of the Bible, Matthew Philemon, with the children. Practice saying them in funny voices (whispering, squeaking like a mouse, etc.), motor activity (jumping, marching, etc.), or with hand motions (clapping, chomping like an alligator, etc.). What You Say: OK, now we are going to learn the New Testament Books of the Bible. Do you know who we learn about in the New Testament? That s right! We learn about Jesus! Let s practice! Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts, Romans, 1 & 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1&2 Thessalonians. Can you say it with me? 4 First Look March 5, 2017, Week 1 Small Group, Preschool Make It Real (Small Group Application & Prayer, 5 minutes) Small Group Time What You Need: Memory Verse Card, prayer journal and a pen. SMALL GROUP LEADER (SGL): Which person in our Bible story loved everyone the way Jesus loves everyone? (Pause for responses.) Yes! It was the man who stopped to help the hurt man! Loving everyone is how we love like Jesus. So when I ask you: How can you love like Jesus? I want you to say: [Bottom Line] Got it? How can you love like Jesus? CHILDREN and SGL: [Bottom Line] SGL: Yes! And helping people is one way we can show everyone we love them. Our new Bible verse will help us remember to love everyone because it says... (Open Bible to memory verse card and read verse.)... Love one another, John 13:34. That verse will really help us remember to love everyone. Stand up and let s say it together with the motions. CHILDREN and SGL: Love (hug yourself and twist) one another (point to all your friends), John 13:34. (Open your hands like a book.) (Repeat the verse with the motions several times together.) SGL: That verse is fun! (Clap hands.) I like giving myself a hug! Now come sit with me. It s time to write in our prayer journal and I have a great idea of what to pray for today. Since helping people is one way we can show people we love them like Jesus loves them, let s make a list of ways we can help people. I ll write everyone s name in our prayer journal. When I say your name, I want you to tell me one way you can help people and I ll write it beside your name. We can use the list we make when we pray. (Open prayer journal and hold your fun pen. Write each child s name and what they say beside their name. Remember to print the words they say so the children can recognize their names and the letters.) These are awesome ideas for helping people! Let s use our list to ask God to help us help people so they will know we love them like Jesus loves them. Would anyone like to pray before I pray? (Give each child who wants to pray the opportunity to do so.) Now I will pray. Curriculum Materials for 3- through 5-year-olds 2015 The rethink Group. All rights reserved. 4

10 MARCH 2017 MORNING TIME This month let your child wake up to: Rise and shine! It s a great day to love one another! CAR TIME As you drive to your destination, talk about the neighbors you will see when you get there. Decide some ways you can love them when you get there. Can you smile and say hello? Give a hug? Share a toy? We can love everyone when we look for ways to do it. BATH TIME Cut a pool noodle into two-inch sections (like slicing cookie dough). Ask your child to count the pieces as you drop two sections into the bath water. Explain that two is a little but (pour the rest of the sections) this is a lot! The woman in the Bible story this week shared what she had even though she had a little. We can share too, even when we have a little. CUDDLE TIME Cuddle up with your child and pray, Dear God, it feels amazing knowing that You love me and [child s name] no matter what. Please help us to love people the way You do and forgive them when they make wrong choices. We love You, God! In Jesus name we pray, amen. PLAY TIME Teach your child how to take pictures with your phone this week. (He probably already knows how!) Tell him you are going to work together to take pictures of your neighbors. (Remember, Jesus considers everyone His neighbor.) You can print the pictures as you take them to make a Wall of Neighbors in your home. Use your wall to talk to your child about who our neighbors are and ways we can love them. Love one another. That s what the Bible tells us to do. That s what Jesus tells us to do. It sounds easy, and it is when it comes to those whom you already love. But, Jesus wasn t just talking about your spouse and your kids. He was talking about everyone. That s right. Jesus loves everyone, and He wants us to show His love to them too. Loving one another means stopping to help even when others are ignoring the need. It means loving whether you have a little or a lot to give. It means loving a person even if he has wronged you in the past. Sometimes loving one another is easy, and sometimes it s hard. However, it s always worth it. Because when we love one another we are showing each other the love of Jesus. And that is what He s asked us to do! The community at TheParentCue.org was created to help parents do family better. With blog discussions, podcasts, advice, and inspiration, Parent Cue prompts us to intentionally connect with our families regularly. Since none of us need more to do in our day, Parent Cue helps us capture the time we re already spending together. There s an app for that: Parent Cue App centered around a monthly topic, this app sends weekly CUEs that remind us to connect with our kids whether at home or on the go. You can even watch Bible story videos during drive time using the app Orange. All rights reserved.
