7 Reformation Sunday Today Reformation Sunday, which commemorates what was perhaps greatest move of God s Spirit since days of Apostles. But what significance of Reformation Day, how should we consider events it commemorates? At time, few would have suspected that sound of a hammer striking castle church door in Wittenberg, Germany, would soon be heard around world lead ultimately to greatest transformation of Western society since apostles first preached Gospel throughout Roman empire. Martin Lur s nailing of h ninetyfive ses to church door on October 31, 1517, provoked a debate that culminated finally in what we now call Protestant Reformation. An heir of Bhop Augustine of Hippo, Martin Lur one of most significant figures God has raed up since that time. Th law student turned Augustinian monk became center of a great controversy after h ses were copied dtributed throughout Europe. Initially protesting pope s attempt to sell salvation, Lur s study of Scripture soon led him to oppose church of Rome on sues including primacy of Bible over church tradition means by which we are found righteous in sight of God. Th last sue probably Lur s most significant contribution to Chrtian ology. Though preached clearly in New Testament found in writings of many of church fars, medieval bhops priests had largely forgotten truth that our own good works can by no means merit God s favor. Salvation by grace alone through faith alone, good works result from our faith, y are not added to it as grounds for our right sting in Lord s eyes (Ephesians 2:810). Justification, God s declaration that we are not guilty, forgiven of sin, righteous in H sight comes because through our faith alone Far imputes, or reckons to our account, perfect righteousness of Chrt (2 Corinthians 5:21). Martin Lur s redcovery of th truth led to a whole host of or church societal reforms much of what we take for granted in West would have likely been impossible had he never graced scene. Lur s translation of Bible into German put Word of God in hs of people, today Scripture available in vernacular language of many countries, enabling lay people to study it with profit. He recaptured biblical view of priesthood of all believers, showing all people that ir work had purpose dignity because in it y can serve ir Creator.
