5 Sharing Scriptures & Stories Monday 14th November, Leicester Cathedral Every religious tradition has a rich resource of scriptures and stories which bring comfort, challenge and coherence to our faith. The Sharing Scriptures and Stories sessions offer an opportunity for people of different faiths to come together and learn from each other s beliefs and traditions. In a world where religion is sometimes used to divide and promote hatred, we want to show how religion can be a force for unity, peace and mutual flourishing. Leicester Cathedral and the St Philip s Centre are working in partnership on this initiative, which we hope will spread throughout the city and involve a number of significant faith institutions from a range of different faith perspectives. This will be the third of four evenings at which participants from any faith are invited to bring a short extract from a sacred text or a short story that is of particular significance a passage which you regularly draw comfort from, one that was read at a significant personal occasion, or a saying that you find particularly inspiring. You will be asked to introduce your chosen text and share it within a small group who will then discuss it briefly. Each input will be for around 15 minutes. A donation of 5 is requested to cover costs and light refreshments will be provided. Payment will be taken on the door. To book a place, visit:

6 FAITH AWARENESS AUTUMN COURSE: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE BAHÁ Í FAITH Monday 14th November, Christchurch, 105a Clarendon Park Road, LE2 3AH This evening s topic, The Bahá í Writings, will be presented by Khazeh Fananapazir and George Ballentyne. Bahá ís have been an active presence in Leicester since the 1950s, a small but influential community which has played a positive role all that time in developing good inter faith relations and promoting multicultural values. However, there s little common knowledge about what it means to be a Bahá í: who they are, what they believe, their hopes and intentions why they do what they do. You can find out these things (and more) on this free course, meet Bahá ís and discuss how their activities and ambitions fit in with the life of the city, the country and the wider world. Faith Awareness is the inter faith programme of Christians Aware, offering the opportunity for members of the general public to learn more about the beliefs and practices of the city s diverse faith communities in a friendly and informal setting. Their popular courses, running during term time, have been going on for more than a dozen years now. For more information, contact Rob Robinson: ; rob@christiansaware.force9.co.uk. You can find Faith Awareness Leicester on Facebook. This event is organised by Christians Aware

11 LIBERATION: Kajal Nisha Patel in Conversation Wednesday 16th November, University of Leicester, Attenborough Tower 001 Kajal Nisha Patel is Leverhulme Artist in Residence at the University of Leicester, Department of Sociology. As part of her project, she has been developing research and artwork on British South Asian women s working and domestic lives. Her project focuses on women who arrived from the Indian subcontinent during the late 1960s/70s and have spent the majority of their working lives in Britain. As part of her residency, Kajal has worked with more than 100 individuals, in various venues and with numerous different community groups. The purpose of this social engagement was for members of the community to contribute towards the production of a collaborative artwork, for exhibition at the University of Leicester. This intergenerational, cross-cultural project transcends boundaries of language, age, race, faith and gender. The resulting work reflects unique identities as they move collectively towards a common goal. The installation can be seen in the foyer of the Charles Wilson building from Monday 7 November. This discussion will examine Kajal s own position and practice as an artist while considering the potential of participatory art as a tool for social change, collaboration and community cohesion. The seminar will be followed by a reception in the Charles Wilson foyer. You are also encouraged to visit/view the installation prior to the seminar. This event is being organised by
