Saint Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church Founded 1879 The Nineteenth Sunday of the Year 12 August 2018
Prelude Organ: Processional Francois-Clement Theodore Dubois ( ) Entrance Procession Introit: Respice, Domine Graduale Romanum Respice, Domine, in testamentum tuum, et animas pauperum tuorum ne derelinquas in finem: exsurge Domine, et judica causam tuam: et ne obliviscaris voces quaerentium te. Ps. Ut quid Deus repulisti in finem: iratus est furor tuus super oves pascuae tuae. Remember, O Lord, your covenant, and do not abandon for ever the souls of your poor; arise, O Lord, and judge your own cause; forget not the cries of those who seek you. Ps. O God, why have you cast us off unto the end; and why is your wrath enkindled against the sheep of your flock. (Psalm 73/74: 20, 19, 22, 23 & 1) -2-

Collect Liturgy of the Word First Reading I Kings 19: 4-8 Elijah went a day's journey into the desert, until he came to a broom tree and sat beneath it. He prayed for death saying: "This is enough, O LORD! Take my life, for I am no better than my fathers." He lay down and fell asleep under the broom tree, but then an angel touched him and ordered him to get up and eat. Elijah looked and there at his head was a hearth cake and a jug of water. After he ate and drank, he lay down again, but the angel of the LORD came back a second time, touched him, and ordered, "Get up and eat, else the journey will be too long for you!" He got up, ate, and drank; then -4-
strengthened by that food, he walked forty days and forty nights to the mountain of God, Horeb. Lector: The word of the Lord. Response: Thanks be to God. Responsorial Psalm Psalm 34: 2-3, 4-5, I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall be ever in my mouth. Let my soul glory in the LORD; the lowly will hear me and be glad. R. Taste and see the goodness of the Lord. Glorify the LORD with me, Let us together extol his name. I sought the LORD, and he answered me And delivered me from all my fears. R. Taste and see the goodness of the Lord. Look to him that you may be radiant with joy. And your faces may not blush with shame. When the afflicted man called out, the LORD heard, and from all his distress he saved him. R. Taste and see the goodness of the Lord. The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him and delivers them. Taste and see how good the LORD is; blessed the man who takes refuge in him. R. Taste and see the goodness of the Lord. Second Reading Ephesians 4:30-5:2 Brothers and sisters: Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you were sealed for the day of redemption. All bitterness, fury, anger, shouting, and reviling must be removed from you, along with all malice. And be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another as God has forgiven you in Christ. So be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as Christ loved us and handed himself over for us as a sacrificial offering to God for a fragrant aroma. Lector: The word of the Lord. Response: Thanks be to God. -5-
Alleluia I am the living bread that came down from heaven, says the Lord; whoever eats this bread will live forever. (John 6: 51) Holy Gospel John 6: Homily Priest: The Lord be with you. Response: And with your spirit. Priest: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John. Response: Glory to you, O Lord. The Jews murmured about Jesus because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven," and they said, "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? Do we not know his father and mother? Then how can he say, 'I have come down from heaven'?" Jesus answered and said to them, "Stop murmuring among yourselves. No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draw him, and I will raise him on the last day. It is written in the prophets: They shall all be taught by God. Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died; this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world." Priest: The Gospel of the Lord. Response: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. -6-
Profession of Faith The Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, [bow] and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayer of the Faithful Lector: Let us pray to the Lord. Response: Lord, hear our prayer. -7-
Offertory Liturgy of the Eucharist -8-
Offertorium: In te speravi Graduale Romanum In te speravi, Domine: dixi: Tu es Deus meus, in manibus tuis tempora mea. In you I have trusted, O Lord. I said, You are my God, in your hands is my destiny. (Psalm 30/31: 15, 16) Motet: In te speravi Orlando di Lasso ( ) (See Offertorium above for Text & Translation.) Sanctus Missa XVIII Mysterium Fidei Amen -9-
Our Father Pax Domini Agnus Dei Communion Procession Communio: Panis, quem ego dedero with Psalm 77/78 Graduale Romanum Panis, quem ego dedero, caro mea est pro saeculi vita. The bread, which I will give you, is my flesh for the life of the ages. (John 6: 52) 1. Confitebor Domino in toto corde meo: in consilio justorum et congregatione. I will praise you, O Lord, with my whole heart, in the council of the just, and in the 2. congregation Magna opera Domini, exquirenda omnibus, qui cupiunt ea. Great are the works of the Lord, sought out by all who love them. 3. Décor et magnificentia opus eius, et justitia eius manet in saeculum saeculi. His work is praise and magnificence, and his justice remains forever. 4. Memoriam fecit mirabilium suorum, misericors et miserator Dominus. He made a remembrance of his wonderful works, being a merciful and gracious Lord. 5. Escam dedit timentibus se: memor erit in saeculum testament sui. He has given food to them that fear him; he will be mindful forever of his covenant. -10-
6. Virtutem operum suorum annuntiavit populo suo, ut det illis hereditatem gentium: opera manuum eius vertitas et judicium. He will show forth to his people the power of his works, that he may give them the inheritance of the Gentiles; the works of his hands are truth and judgment. 7. Fidelia omnia mandata eius, confirmata in saeculum saeculi, facta in veritate et aequitate. All his commandments are faithful, confirmed forever, made in truth and equity. 8. Redemptionem misit populo suo, mandavit in aeternum testamentum suum. He sent redemption to his people; he commanded his covenant forever. 9. Sanctum et terribile nomen eius. Initium sapientiae timor Domini. Holy and terrible is his name. The beginning of wisdom is fear of the Lord. 10. Intellectus bonus omnibus facientibus ea: laudation eius manet in saeculum saeculi. A good understanding to all that do it; his praise remains forever. (Psalm 110/111: 1-10) Anthem to the Blessed Virgin Mary -11-
Final Blessing & Dismissal Priest: The mass is ended, go in peace. Response: Thanks be to God. The Saint Michael Prayer Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits, who prowl throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. Priest: Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, All: Have mercy on us.
