4 Description of Activities/ Lessons Day 1 Introduce the unit by showing picture of St. Patrick on the Smartboard. Lead a discussion about a description of the picture his clothing, snakes at his feet, etc. Introduce Unit Vocabulary by writing words on the SmartBoard. Break students into work partners and assign each pair one of the words. Have each pair complete an Own the Word graphic organizer for the specific word that was assigned to them. Students can use dictionary.com to discover the definition of assigned word. Students will then share definition and Own the Word graphic organizer through Document Camera with the class. Day 2 Hand out informational tet The Life of St. Patrick and instruct students to quick scan the article looking at images, caption, maps, tables, etc. Play the song Hail Glorious St. Patrick as an anticipatory set. Complete a KWL chart focusing first on what we already know about St. Patrick and what we want to learn. Orally review vocabulary words with whole group. Relate each word The Life of St. Patrick through class discussion. Day 3 Working with a research partner, students will be given research forms and instructed to use websites and The Life of St. Patrick to complete their research forms. (Teacher will post acceptable websites on class Portaportal.) GRAMMAR REVIEW ACTIVITY: Using highlighters and the last page of The Life of St. Patrick, students will highlight various grammatical conventions and then share these with the class. Teacher can show the page on Smartboard and highlight these as a class after students have worked independently. Allow students to discuss other grammatical conventions as they discover them (adjectives, adverbs, article, etc.) Highlight three nouns pink. Highlight three verbs blue. Highlight one compound sentence yellow. Highlight two proper nouns green.

5 Day 4 & 5 Students will begin creating their Research Report. Using Google Docs and Research Forms, students will create a report about the life of St. Patrick. Teacher will give students a Report Rubric and review the requirements of the project. Students must include a picture (centered) in the report. Students must cite resources on a resource page.( Rubric included in Resources) Day 6 Review Unit Vocabulary and highlights of St. Patrick s life with Question Ball. Students will then create a large cut out of St. Patrick with Research Partner. Students will choose the image they want to create. Students may free draw or use the Smart Board to project and trace the image. Students will then choose art medium to complete their project (paint, markers, crayons, etc ) These large St. Patrick cut outs will be displayed with Research Reports in the hall. Day 7 Given a blank World Map and Labeled World Maps in student planners, students will locate Ireland by placing a shamrock sticker on the country. They will then locate bodies of water and other countries that border Ireland and label them. Students will also draw a Compass Rose on their blank maps. As a class discussion using review map skills, students will answer questions such as On what continent is Ireland? What continent is to the south of Ireland? What continent is to the west of Ireland? What ocean touches Ireland? Is Ireland to the north, south, east, or west of us? Using Chromebooks, students will then research an image of the flag of Ireland. Students will draw and color this flag on the back of their maps. Teacher will display image of the US flag and encourage students to compare and contrast these flags. Day 8 Review Unit Vocabulary, highlights of St. Patrick s life, and general geographical questions about Ireland with Question Ball. Students will then be given a large green shamrock. On the front students will label the leaves of the shamrock with with Holy Trinity. On the back of the shamrock, students will write three facts they want to

6 teach to their First Grade Buddies. Teacher will monitor these facts as students are working. Students will then work in pairs and practice teaching their partner the three facts and about the leaves of the shamrock in preparation for working with First Grade Buddies. Day 9 Students will visit the first grade classroom and teach their First Grade Buddies their three facts and about the leaves of the shamrock representing the Holy Trinity. Students will give First Grade Buddies a coloring sheet of the Shamrock and will color it together as they discuss the information they taught about St. Patrick. (These coloring sheets can be purchased at : Third Graders will then escort their First Grade Buddies by the hallway display of the large St. Patrick Cut Outs and show them they one they made. Day 10 Students will take a written assessment on the life of St. Patrick. Students will write a Reflection in the Prayer Journals about how St. Patrick has inspired them to share the Gospel with others. Students may share their Reflections with the class if they would like. Students will then begin to prepare for a prayer service honoring St. Patrick, our school s patron saint. (Sample prayer service included in resources.) Fluency Reading: Students will practice reading The Prayer of St Patrick each day and evening with parents. Students will then read this to various classes at the end of the week. Students will be scored on Fluency, Epression, and Volume. (Fluency Reading located under Resources.) Etended Activity: Allow class to view the Veggie Tales St. Patrick video. Encourage students to write facts they researched throughout the video on a large shamrock. Differentiated Instruction Opportunities/Overview: Students struggling with reading informational tet can work with a Sith Grade Buddy or Instructional Aide to identify answers on Research Form. Science Allow students to eamine a real shamrock plant. Instruct students to identify plant parts and touch the leaves as St. Patrick did to teach the Holy Trinity. Music/ Choir Students will learn to sing Hail Glorious St. Patrick and Christ Be With Me.

The Life of St. Patrick Informational Tet St. Patrick Feast Day: March 17 Born: 385 :: Died: 461 St. Patrick was born in England to Roman parents. When he was siteen, he was kidnapped by pirates and taken on a ship to Ireland.

9 There he was sold as a slave. His owner sent him to look after his flocks of sheep on the mountains. Patrick had very little food and clothing yet he took good care of the animals in rain, snow and ice. Patrick was so lonely on the hillside that he turned often in prayer to Jesus. His life was hard but Patrick's trust in God grew stronger all the time. Si years later, he had a dream in which he was commanded to return to Britain. He saw this as a sign and escaped from Ireland.

10 In Britain he studied to become a priest. Then Patrick had a strong feeling that he had to go back to Ireland to bring that pagan land of non believers to Christ. At last his wish came true. He became a priest and then a bishop. Pope St. Celestine I asked Patrick to go as a missionary and preach first in England then in Ireland. How happy he was to bring the Good News of the true God to the people who once held him a slave. There was always the danger that St. Patrick would be killed, yet the saint kept on preaching about Jesus. He traveled from one village to another where tribe after tribe became Christian. He hardly ever rested.

11 Before he died, within the thirty three years he worked in Ireland, the whole nation was Christian. St. Patrick was one of the most successful missionaries in the world, but his great success in no way made St. Patrick proud. He called himself a poor sinner and gave all praise to God. 15 St. Patrick Prayer Service Welcome to our Prayer Service. We are glad you came to celebrate in honoring the life of St. Patrick. We begin in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Today we remember St. Patrick who is the patron saint of our school. He was such a great eample for us to follow. Our school is named after this wonderful man so today we want you to learn a little more about this special friend of Jesus. Opening Song: HAIL GLORIOUS ST PATRICK Lord Jesus Christ, we gather together to hear your Word to us, as we open a new school year at St. Patrick School. As we celebrate the eample of our patron saint, St. Patrick, may we remember that we too are called to follow Jesus. We make our prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen. His Feast Day is March 17 St. Patrick s Day. This statue is in our school library. Have you ever wondered why our school is called the Irish? (Student will show Map) This is Ireland. As we have told you, St. Patrick went all over Ireland preaching, baptising people, and building churches. We too are called to share the good news of God s love. This map is on the wall in the hallway upstairs. Have you ever wondered why we have a shamrock as our school symbol? (Student will show a large Shamrock cut out and a shamrock plant) St. Patrick came to Ireland to tell the Irish people the good news about Jesus Christ. He used a small three leafed plant, called the shamrock to eplain the Trinity. He said: just as the shamrock has three leaves so one God is three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
