1 January 27, 2019 Assemble in God s Name As you Focus For Worship Spirit of God, who inspired the Scriptures and gave them fulfillment in Jesus Christ, open our eyes to the gifts you have entrusted to each one of us and show us how to work together to realize your purposes in our midst. We long to live in a world where mutual caring and support replace competition and violence. Help us to honor one another s gifts and strive for the greatest of all gifts, the embodiment of your love. Amen. 1 Welcome and Proclamation of the Good News Prelude Great is Thy Faithfulness arr. D. Ritter Christy Kim, violin, Grace Kim, flute and Nolan Meister, piano * Call To Worship In the beginning our God created the light. Morning broke open on the first day. This God of ours sent the light. Jesus the Christ came to the world s people. Morning light opens for us. God s Light illumines our lives; and opens us to worship this day. 2 Let us worship God. * Hymn No. 454 Blessed Jesus, at Your Word Prayer of Confession God our Redeemer, we confess that our lives do not reflect your glory. You offer us your living Word, but we do not listen to your voice. You call us to be one in your Spirit, but we foster division in Christ s body. Forgive us, God of grace. Open our hearts again this day to the liberating truth of your Word and the life-giving power of your Spirit; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Assurance of Pardon We have seen the Light. We have heard the call. Service of Divine Worship Third Sunday after Epiphany (Silent Personal Prayer) We will dance in the Light With our God. 2 Thanks be to God, in Jesus Christ we are forgiven. * Song of Joy Hymn No. 481 v-3 Praise the Lord, God s Glories Show Praise the Lord, great mercies trace, Alleluia! Praise this providence and grace, Alleluia! All that God for us has done, Alleluia! All God sends us through the Son, Alleluia! * The Peace ( The Peace of the Lord be with you. And also with you. As a sign of reconciliation please share the Peace of Christ with your brothers and sisters.) Proclaim God s Word Prayer For Illumination God, source of all light, by your Word you give light to the soul. Pour out upon us the spirit of wisdom and understanding that, being taught by you in Holy Scripture, our hearts and minds may be opened to know the things that pertain to life and holiness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 4 Old Testament Lesson Nehemiah 8:1-3, 5-6, 8-10 Children's Time Ministry of Music For the Beauty of the Earth J. Coffee Mug Ministry Janet Clifford Brown (month of January) Intercessory Prayer Bond Hill Presbyterian Church Attendance 89 Soles 4 Souls Donate Used Shoes Scouting is not only about campfires and merit badges. Scouting provides the opportunity to participate in adventures, build character, understand responsibility, and much more even the concepts of thriftiness and helping others at all times. Crew 750 recognizes the struggles that many underprivileged people face. In turn, we along with Heritage Presbyterian Church and the entire Dan Beard Council, BSA has partnered with Soles4Souls to collect 25,000 pairs of shoes in the hopes of changing 25,000 lives. In partnering with Soles4Souls, we are showing youth that by collecting shoes, oppressed lives can gain relief and confidence. A collection box will be in the Atrium starting this week through February 3 rd and the Scouts will be collecting shoes at the Scout Sunday Service on February 3 rd. Please rubber band the shoes or tie the laces together. Thank you in advance for your help and support!
4 ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL? ARE YOU READY FOR SOME MISSION? On Super Bowl Sunday, February 3 rd Heritage Presbyterian Church is joining other churches, schools, and organizations across the country to fight hunger and poverty by collecting soup for food banks. Our collection will go to the Mason Food Pantry. Last year, we collected 875 cans of soup and $2500. The donated soup supplied the Mason Food Pantry for 6 months, and our cash donation purchased $25,000 in groceries through Shared Harvest. Can we top that this year? There are several ways to help! IHN Homeless Hosting Begins TODAY Sunday, January 27 thru Sunday, February 2, 2019 Your Help in Needed! Is there a better way to respond to the grace of God, than by providing food and shelter to the homeless in our own community? Please stop by the sign-up board in the atrium. You will see lots of different ways where you can participate. Most of them take only a couple of hours of your time or less. An IHN week is truly a case where many hands make light work. Please check the sign-up board (in the atrium) to see how you can lend a hand. DONATE CANS OF SOUP Heritage Tweens are collecting canned soup donations through FEBRUARY 3. Collection bins are available in the Atrium and Preschool. High protein and chunky style soups are preferred but all canned soups are welcomed. ENJOY HOME MADE CHILI Our Tweens are making homemade chili that will be available to you on FEBRUARY 3 for a suggested $5 donation. All donations will go to the Mason Food Pantry. PRAY Our service to God and our neighbors is always blessed by prayer. Please pray for a successful food drive, and that hunger and poverty will be eliminated. Note: Pastor Stainton says that he will take a pie in the face, if the congregation brings in 1200 cans of soup this year. Sign Up HERE: bit.ly/hpctransportation Either type the link into your internet browser, OR use your phone s camera to scan the QR code. WE NEED DRIVERS! Our congregation has a few members who love to come to church on Sunday, but need a ride. Are you willing to help? If you have questions, contact Sandy White (Deacon) at fouriron7@gmail.com
5 From A Brief Statement of Faith In life and in death we belong to God. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve. We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the church. The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls women and men to all ministries of the church. In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God s new heaven and new earth, praying, Come, Lord Jesus! With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Amen. Guests and Newcomers We extend to you a warm welcome. Please help us become acquainted by using the visitor tag and introducing yourself to the pastor. If you are looking for a church home, or have a special or spiritual need, please speak with one of the pastors. Parents With Young Children Nursery is available for infants through age two. Wee Worship is available in room 9, for children ages 3-kindergarten following the Children s Time. Worship Activity Bags are available in the atrium for children ages 3-6 and Ask an usher for one and return the bag in the box provided when worship is over.
