OFFICIAL -I CONSULTATION 2012 This year, we celebrate the 125 th Anniversary of the erection of the Archdiocese of Bombay. It is appropriate that we use this occasion for a spiritual pastoral renewal. Later in the year, we will have a solemn Liturgical Celebration to commemorate this occasion. As ten years have passed since the last Archdiocesan Synod, having taken the opinion of my team of Bishops, the Priests Council and the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council, and also having discussed this at a Clergy Meeting, I am happy to announce that we will have a Consultation later this year. It will be similar in many ways to our last Archdiocesan Synod, but modified to suit our present-day situation and needs. I am appointing Fr Gilbert D Lima to coordinate the organisational details of this Synod. I expect to periodically update our people about this important event in the life of the Archdiocese through announcements in The Examiner. 7 Christian Unity Octave 2012 E D I T O R I A L T he theme of Christian Unity Octave 2012 is concerned with the transformative power of faith in Christ, particularly in relation to our praying for the visible unity of the Church, the Body of Christ. The theme: We will all be changed by the Victory of our Lord Jesus Christ (cf. 1 Cor 15:51-58) was based on St Paul s words to the Corinthian Church, which speaks of the temporary nature of our present lives (with all its apparent victory and defeat ), in comparison to what we receive through the victory of Christ through the Paschal Mystery. Rivalry is a permanent feature, not only in sport, but also in political, business, cultural, and even Church life. When Jesus disciples disputed over who was the greatest (Mk 9:34), it was clear that this impulse was strong. But Jesus reaction was very simple: Whoever wants to be first must be last of all, and servant of all (Mk 9:35). These words speak of victory through mutual service, helping, boosting the selfesteem of those who are last, forgotten, excluded. For all Christians, the best expression of such humble service is Jesus Christ, His victory through death and Resurrection. The biblical readings, commentaries, prayers and questions for reflection, all explore different aspects of what this means for the lives of Christians and their unity with one another, in and for today s world. We begin by contemplating the Christ who serves, and our journey takes us to the final celebration of Christ s reign, by way of His Cross and Resurrection, so that we will be changed through the victory of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is in His life, action, teaching, suffering, death and Resurrection that we desire to seek inspiration for a modern victorious life of faith which expresses itself in social commitment in a spirit of humility, service and faithfulness to the Gospel. And as He awaited the suffering and death that was to come, He prayed that His disciples might be One, so that the world might believe. This victory is only possible through spiritual transformation and conversion. As we pray for and strive towards the full visible unity of the Church, we - and the traditions to which we belong - will be changed, transformed and conformed to the likeness of Christ. The unity for which we pray may require the renewal of forms of Church life with which we are familiar. This is an exciting vision, but it may fill us with some fear! The unity for which we pray is not merely a comfortable notion of friendliness and cooperation. It requires a willingness to dispense with competition between us. We need to open ourselves to each other, to offer gifts to, and receive gifts from one another, so that we might truly enter into the new life in Christ, which is the only true victory. There is room for everyone in God s plan of salvation. Through His death and Resurrection, Christ embraces all, irrespective of winning or losing, that whoever believes in Him may have eternal life (Jn 3:15). We too can participate in His victory! It is sufficient to believe in Him, and we will find it easier to overcome evil with good. (The editorial is a summary of the material for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity in 2012, sent by representatives of the Roman Catholic Church, the Orthodox Church and Old Catholic and Protestant Churches active in Poland.) 7

BIBLICAL REFLECTIONS FOR UNITY OCTAVE The Biblical texts proposed for Refl ection by the International Committee nominated by the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches and the Pontifi cal Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity. January 18 Theme: Changed by the Servant Christ Text: The Son of Man came to serve (cf. Mk 10:45) A king righteous and victorious and humble. We have different gifts with which to serve. The Son of Man came to serve. The coming of the Messiah and His victory were accomplished through service. Jesus wants a spirit of service to fill the hearts of His followers as well. He teaches us that true greatness consists in serving God and one s neighbour. Christ gives us the courage to discover that He is the one for whom to serve is to reign as an early Christian saying has it. January 19 Theme: Changed through patient waiting for the Lord Text: Let it be so now, for it is proper to fulfil all righteousness (Mt 3:15) Victory is often associated with immediate triumph. Everybody knows the taste of success when, after a difficult struggle, congratulations, recognition, and even tributes are paid. At such a joyful moment, hardly anyone realises that from a Christian perspective, victory is a long-term process of transformation. Such an understanding of transformative victory teaches us that it occurs in God s time, not ours, calling for our patient trust and deep hope in God. January 20 Theme: Changed by the Suffering Servant Text: Christ suffered for us (cf. 1 Pt 2:21) The man of sorrows, accustomed to suffering did not despise the affliction of the afflicted. Christ suffered for us. Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things? The divine paradox is that God can change tragedy and disaster into victory. He transforms all our sufferings and misfortunes, and the enormity of history s pain, into a resurrection that encompasses the whole world. While appearing to be defeated, He is nevertheless the true Victory whom no one and nothing can overcome. January 21 Theme: Changed by the Lord s victory over evil Text: Overcome evil with good (Rom 12:21) Do not follow the majority in wrongdoing. Happy are those whose delight is in the law of the Lord. Overcome evil with good. Worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only. In Jesus, we learn what victory really means for human beings - that is, happiness with one another in God s love through His overcoming of all that keeps us apart. This is a sharing in Christ s victory over the destructive forces that damage humanity and all of God s Creation. In Jesus, we can share in a new life which calls us to struggle against what is wrong in our world with renewed confidence and with a delight in what is good. January 22 Theme: Changed by the peace of the Risen Lord Text: Jesus stood among them and said: Peace be with you! (Jn 20:19) He will turn the hearts of parents to their children and the hearts of children to their parents. How good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity! To reconcile both groups to God in one body, putting to death hostility. Jesus stood among them, and said: Peace be with you. What forms of violence in our community can we as Christians confront together? How do we experience hidden hostilities that affect our relationship to each other as Christian communities? How can we learn to welcome each other as Christ welcomes us? January 23 Theme: Changed by God s Steadfast Love Text: This is the victory, our faith (cf. 1 Jn 5:4) God, the Lord is my strength. His steadfast love endures forever. This is the victory that conquers the world our faith. No one has greater love than to lay down one s life for one s friends. How should we express Christian love in the context of different religions and philosophies? What must we do to become more credible witnesses of God s steadfast love in a divided world? How can Christ s followers Contd on pg. 12 8

FR ERASTO FERNANDEZ, SSS IMPLEMENTING THE CHANGES IN THE REVISED ROMAN MISSAL - PART II Understanding the meaning of the responses will help us adapt better. Proceeding deeper into our analysis and understanding of some of the renewed texts of the Eucharist, we now look at yet another revised expression this time taken from the opening dialogue with the people at the start of the Eucharistic Prayer. This rather long prayer forms the very heart of the Eucharist, in which we not merely recall but also make present the original self-giving sacrifice of Jesus; it is the Memorial which Jesus commanded us to do in His memory! Let us Give Thanks to the Lord our God In response to the proclamation at the Preface, Let us give thanks, the assembly now responds with It is right and just! To the unwary or inattentive participant, this does not seem to be poles apart from what was used so far! Yet, when the Celebrant reinforces the key point in what he immediately adds, It is truly right and just that we should give you thanks and praise, the difference is as clear as daylight! This one word just is the one that makes all the difference, for it brings to mind a very important Biblical principle. The Covenant God makes with us is characterised by freedom, love and mutuality on our part. Now, mutual doesn t mean only a twoway traffic; it suggests that there is a certain parity in the giving on both sides. So, when God gives us Fr Erasto Fernandez, sss is an ardent writer on the deeper meaning and relevance of the Eucharist. He is currently Rector of the Blessed Sacrament Scholasticate at De Nobili College Campus, Pune. His all, not sparing even His only begotten Son (Rom. 8:32), isn t it right and just that we also give whole-heartedly, and not merely in a casual or miserly, calculated manner? It is perfectly true that we humans, because we are His creatures, would never be able to give God anything worthwhile in return that is not already His; much less would we be able to respond in any matter on par with His selfless liberality! Yet, our response could at least be a relative total, so that while God gives 100/100, we give 30/30 which is also a hundred per cent, though at a much lower level. What really counts is the generous and truly grateful attitude we bring to bear on our response, and the keen desire we have to give the utmost we are capable of! This is what the new Translation with its use of the word just reminds us of: until we give our all like the poor widow in Lk 21:3-4 who gave all that she had to live on, we are not truly disciples of the Lord Jesus who gave Himself totally (His very life: this is My body/blood!) for our sake. In Lk 14:33, Jesus cautions, So therefore, none of you can become my disciple, if you do not give up all your possessions. And again in Lk 18:22, Jesus counsels the rich young man, Sell all that you own and distribute the money to the poor, and then come, follow me. We see how Zacchaeus embodied this spirit when He boldly proclaimed during the banquet, Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much. (Lk 19:8-10). Giving to the Lord anything less than our all not only makes us third-rate disciples, but also fails to give adequate thanks to the Lord for His generosity. Besides, it smacks of a half-hearted acknowledgment of the value of God s ineffable gifts to us! When Simon the Pharisee took objection to the sinner woman s generous protestations of love, Jesus came to her rescue by telling the group the parable of the creditor and the two debtors. Summing up His point, Jesus concluded, Therefore, I tell you, her sins, which were many, have been forgiven; hence she has shown great love. But the one to whom little is forgiven, loves little. Then He said to her, Your sins are forgiven (Lk 7:47-48). Isn t it right and just then, that at the Eucharist, we give our whole selves in return to the Lord as generously as He has given us of His grace and mercy? In the Acts of the Apostles, Luke further highlights the unquestionable necessity of such total giving through the story of Ananias and Sapphira in Ch. 5. Ananias, with the consent of his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property; with his wife s knowledge, he kept back some of the proceeds, and brought only 9

a part and laid it at the apostles feet. Ananias, Peter asked, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back part of the proceeds of the land? While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, were not the proceeds at your disposal? How is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You did not lie to us but to God! There is another thoughtprovoking parable in Luke 11 where the Lord teaches the community how to pray. Jesus tells of a man who goes to his neighbour at midnight, requesting a loan of three loaves of bread. In answer, the neighbour does not say that he has no bread, but rather insists that he should not be disturbed at that unearthly hour! He certainly has bread, and the petitioner knows that for sure! But the neighbour repeatedly refuses to budge, till the moment when it suddenly dawns on him that the bread in question here is actually the daily (epiousios - Eucharistic) bread which only the Father can give, not Moses nor anyone else (see Jn 6:32)! Now, this bread is very special; it is the Eucharistic bread which is distinctive, not so much because it is Christ Himself, but rather because it is the bread that is given for you. That is the only way the early Christians referred to the Eucharist On the first day of the week, when we met to break bread (Acts 20:7). The moment the neighbour inside realises this distinctiveness of the Christian who receives each day this daily bread precisely that he may share it with others in need, he will get up and give him whatever (all that) he needs (Lk 11:8). This indeed is behaviour fitting and just for a Christian! Now, it follows that if we are conscious that as Christians, we need to give our all during the Eucharist, could we be miserly during the rest of the day, when the Lord further challenges us to break ourselves in favour of our needy brethren? Doesn t the celebrant also remind us that it is right and just that we should give thanks always and everywhere? Could we then insist on being like Dives (in Lk 16:19-31) who ignored the needs of the leprous Lazarus begging at his gate? Wouldn t our Christian lives instead be more filled with good works, especially in our own Small Christian communities? When so many people all around the world go out of their way to show kindness and concern to the needy through Smile Cards, random acts of kindness and so on, could Christians who receive so much from the prodigal hand of the Father afford to lag behind? Further, knowing that God is never outdone in generosity, would we not receive a hundredfold for the little selfless kindness we show our neighbour? all of which would make us want to return to the next Eucharist, to give Him thanks and praise because it is right and just! 11 FR HENRY ANGEL SAC GOLDEN JUBILEE OF THE CANONISATION OF ST VINCENT PALLOTTI St Vincent Pallotti believed in giving his all to God. He founded the Union of Catholic Apostolate. The Pallottine family begin its celebration of the 50 th anniversary of the canonisation of St Vincent Pallotti on January 20, 2012; it ends on January 20, It will be an occasion for Pallotti s followers all over the world to recall and be inspired anew by the ideals and vision of this Saint. St Vincent Pallotti was ordained a priest for the diocese of Rome in May Until he died on January 22, 1850, Pallotti served the diocese of Rome as a priest. Brought up in a pious Catholic family, Pallotti grew up to understand that life was a gracious gift from God and was to be spent in love and service of Him. Life was not about going after what one wanted, but it was primarily about pursuing and accomplishing what God wanted of one. Human life was a project of God, rather than of man. Man, being created in the image of God, was both a gracious gift to be received in gratitude and humility, as well as a challenging invitation to become that image. In his personal life, Pallotti overwhelmingly experienced the infinite love of God. If there was one thing that he wanted to do in his life, it was to return that love as infinitely as a finite human being could. Loving and glorifying God was the primary motivation as well as the fire that energised this diocesan priest. This motivation also freed him from any personal Fr Henry Angel is a Professor of Moral Theology and Canon Law at Prabodhana Pallottine Centre for Theological and Religious Formation in Mysore. He is a well-known preacher. need to pursue wealth, success or fame or anything else men seek to be someone considered as successful in this world. In his personal life and ministry, he spent himself unobtrusively in a variety of tasks as a teacher in a theological academy and spiritual director in several seminaries and colleges in Rome notably the Propaganda College, as a popular confessor, as a provider of homes to orphaned girls, as an agent of ecumenism, as an organiser of night schools for boys of the poorer classes, as a director of retreats, as a good Samaritan to those who suffered illness, and especially to the victims of the plague of 1837, as an active cooperator in reviving many a charitable organisation and an enthusiastic helper of missionaries and foreign missions and many more. In many of these apostolic works, Pallotti found success by obtaining the collaboration of fellow diocesan priests, religious and especially lay persons. St Vincent lived at a very troubled time after the French Revolution. In the power struggle of that time, the Church lost out to the State, and many ecclesiastical institutions and jurisdictions were shut down. Pope Pius VII was imprisoned in France and released just before the fall of Napoleon. After his release, Pope Pius VII began administrative reforms and rebuilding of Church institutions. The rebuilding and reformation work reached its high point in the reign of the succeeding Pope Leo XII. All in all, it was a difficult time politically, religiously and socially. Pallotti was convinced that genuine solutions to these problems lay in human hearts. When the heart of man was put aright, other affairs ecclesiastical, political and social affairs would be put aright too. He believed that faith in God and charity among human beings were the key to unlock spiritual energies that could transform the world. So to revive faith and rekindle charity first among Catholics, and then reach these virtues to people all over the world was the task at hand as he saw it. He also realised that such an immense task could not be accomplished by clergy and religious alone, without the collaboration of the laity. The successes in his own ministry made possible by the collaboration of persons of all walks of life had convinced Pallotti that the apostolate of reviving faith and rekindling charity had to be undertaken by the entire people of God. He called it Catholic Apostolate, meaning the apostolate of all the people of God. He wanted to create a platform that would provide all Catholics an informal but stable structure within the framework of which people of all classes and walks of life, groups as well as individuals, could make 11

their contribution either by way of active full-time or part-time work, or through material help or through prayers to the grand project of reviving faith and rekindling charity first within the Church and then throughout the world. Pallotti s foundation was called the Union of Catholic Apostolate. At that time, Apostolate was understood to belong to the domain of the hierarchy of the Church. But later, the Church recognised Pallotti s foundation as a genuine charism and gave it a living space within its organisation. Pallotti originally envisioned an association of all the faithful loosely structured juridically, but firmly bound by the bond of love of God and of men, and animated and sustained by a central animating body consisting of clerics and lay persons. To be Continued Letters to the Editor must be brief and to the point. Send to editor@examiner.in BIBLICAL REFLECTIONS FOR UNITY OCTAVE (Contd from Pg 8) more visibly support one another throughout the world? January 24 Theme: Changed by the Good Shepherd Text: Feed my sheep (Jn 21:19) Not by might does one prevail. You are there with your rod and your staff. Be strong in the Lord. Feed my sheep. Those who prevail over suffering need support from on high. That support comes through prayer. How does the Good Shepherd inspire us to comfort, revive and restore the confidence of those who are lost? In what ways can Christians of various traditions strengthen each other in confessing and bearing witness to Jesus? For us today, what can be the meaning of St Paul s exhortation: Be strong in the Lord... put on the whole armour of God? January 25 Theme: United in the Reign of Christ Text: To the one who conquers, I will give a place with me on my throne (Rev 3:21) It is in your hand to make great and to give strength to all. You set a crown of fine gold on his head. To the one who conquers, I will give a place with Me on My throne. Whoever serves me, the Father will honour. Christians are aware that unity among them, even if requiring human effort, is above all a gift of God. It is a share in Christ s victory over sin, death and the evil that causes division. Our participation in Christ s victory reaches its fullness in heaven. Our common witness to the Gospel should show the world a God who does not limit or overpower us. We should announce in a way that is credible, to the people of our day and age, that Christ s victory overcomes all that keeps us from sharing fullness of life with Him and with one another. 12

A TRIBUTE TO THE SACERDOTAL GOLDEN JUBILARIANS (Continued) FR RONALD SEQUEIRA grew up in a happy religious ambience created by his simple but wise and saintly parents, Martin and Rita Sequeira, in Our Lady of Salvation parish, Dadar. The religious and friendly ethos of the school, family and Church were contributing factors for his vocation. He was first appointed to St Andrew Church- Bandra followed by St John the Baptist Church-Thane, St Anne Church-Pali Hill, Our Lady of Fatima Church-Sewri, Our Lady of Lourdes Church-Orlem, St Anthony Church- Vakola, where he had a wonderful stay and enriching experiences all through his ministries. His ministry as Parish Priest in St Francis Xavier Church-Parksite, Vikhroli, St John the Evangelist Church-Fort and St Francis de Assisi Church-Bandra and as Principal of Our Lady of Fatima School-Sewri, Infant Jesus School-Pant Nagar gave him an opportunity to put into practice the many ideas that he thought would help in building the community. Despite his ill health and at the age of 78, Fr Rony is an epitome of fortitude, honesty, self-sacrifice, determination, dedication and devotion. He speaks straight from his heart, and it reflects in his homilies. The ministry of a priest is vast and varied, never boring. It is a difficult and demanding life, often marked by failures and disappointments, temptations and loneliness. Yet, Fr Rony says it is a very fulfilling ministry and a rewarding experience, as he has discovered in his 50 years as a priest. Never for a moment has he regretted his decision to become a priest. He prays that we have many more young men willing to join the priesthood to serve for the extension of God s Kingdom here on Earth. He is available to the poor around 24x7. ~Sushila Pereira FR JOSEPH CASTELLINO has been truly a shepherd with the heart and mind of the Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ. Fr Joe hailed from St Andrew s, Bandra and joined the seminary at Parel. He served many parishes in the Archdiocese of Bombay. He has truly been a people s priest at St John the Baptist Church-Thane, Holy Family Church- Pestom Sagar, St Anne Church- Bandra, St Blaise Church-Amboli, Our Lady of Assumption Church- Kandivli, St Anthony Church- Vakola, Our Lady of Rosary Church- Mazagaon, and till very recently at Our Lady of Health Church-Sahar. He involved himself in ministry to people, dispensing the Sacraments, counselling and guiding people preparing for marriage, and reaching out to people when they faced domestic problems. He was known for his love for children and found much joy interacting with them. He could truly be called a friend of the people, as he was accessible to them day and night. Fr Joe has been recuperating from his ill health. He feels stronger now and is eager to be amongst people to minister to them, something that he treasures for life. Besides the Jubliee celebrations at the Clergy Home, the priests and all those who attended this Eucharist were treated to an extra special breakfast. Later in the day, he had a private celebration for friends and family members at his friend s place organised by his niece, sister-in-law and their families. Congratulations, dear Fr Joe and God Bless You. Ad Multos Annos. ~Fr Jervis D Souza FR EDWARD D SOUZA has worked in different capacities during the last 50 years at various parishes in the Archdiocese of Bombay. Fr Edward D Souza, presently at Our Lady of Remedy Church, Poinsur, Kandivli celebrated the Golden Jubilee of his sacerdotal ordination on March 24, He was an assistant at the parishes of Holy Spirit Church-Nandakhal Vasai, St Thomas Church-Sandor Vasai. As a parish priest, he served at Our Lady of Perpetual Succour Church-Manori for 11 years, Our Lady of Assumption Church-Kandivli (W) for 7 years and Holy Family Church -Pestom Sagar Chembur for 6 years. Later, he was appointed on the Staff at Holy Family Church- Pestom Sagar, Our Lady of Health Church-Versova, Our Lady of Assumption Church- Kandivli (W), St Stephen Church- Cumballa Hill and presently at Our Lady of Remedy Church-Poinsur, Kandivli. His priestly life of being faithful to his pastoral duties enabled him to give himself totally to God and to his people unreservedly. He exhorts the youth to be regular at Sunday School, as the Word of God is planted, taught and caught when one is young, and encourages them to join organisations like Altar Servers, Legion of Mary, Choir, Lectors and SVP, as it helps them to grow spiritually. The youth have a great role to play in the Church. Much depends on the youth for the development of our faith and for future vocations. Religious life too has several beautiful elements that enable you to give yourself totally to God. His calm, prayerful, serene approach to all his tasks has truly been an inspiration. ~Ashley Dias 13

CATHOLIC NEWS SERVICE VATICAN RECOMMENDATIONS FOR CELEBRATING THE YEAR OF FAITH In an effort to help Catholics have a better and correct understanding of their faith and become authentic witnesses to Christ, the Vatican issued a list of pastoral recommendations for celebrating the Year of Faith. The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith released a note Jan. 7 outlining the aims of the special year, and ways bishops, dioceses, parishes and communities can promote the truth of the faith. It announced that within the Pontifical Council for Promoting New Evangelisation, a secretariat would be set up to suggest and coordinate different initiatives. The new department will be responsible for launching a special website for sharing useful information on the Year of Faith. Pope Benedict XVI wanted the Year of Faith, which runs from October 11, 2012, to November 24, 2013, to help the Church focus its attention on Jesus Christ and the beauty of having faith in Him, it said. The Church is well aware of the problems facing the faith and recognises that without a revitalisation of faith rooted in a personal encounter with Jesus, all other reforms will remain ineffective, it said citing the Pope s December 22, 2011 address to the Roman Curia. The year is meant to contribute to a renewed conversion to the Lord Jesus and to the rediscovery of faith, so that the members of the Church will be credible and joyfilled witnesses to the Risen Lord, capable of leading those many people who are seeking it to the door of faith, the statement said. Critical to renewing one s faith and being a credible witness is having a firm and correct understanding of Church teaching, it said. Because the year s start, October 11, coincides with the anniversaries of the opening of the Second Vatican Council in 1962 and the promulgation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church in 1992, it would be an auspicious occasion to make the work of the Council and the Catechism more widely and deeply known, it said. The Congregation said the Pope has worked decisively for a correct understanding of the Council, rejecting as erroneous the so-called hermeneutics of discontinuity and rupture and promoting what he himself has termed the hermeneutic of reform, of renewal in continuity with the Church and tradition. The Catechism is an integral part of that renewal in continuity by embracing the old and traditional, while expressing it in a new way, in order to respond to the questions of our times, it said. The note offers pastoral recommendations aimed at aiding both the encounter with Christ through authentic witnesses to faith, and the ever greater understanding of its contents, it said. Among the initiatives will be various ecumenical events at the Vatican aimed at restoring unity among all Christians, including a solemn ecumenical celebration in which all of the baptised will reaffirm their faith in Christ, it said. Some recommendations for bishops, dioceses and parishes include ensuring there be better quality catechetical materials that conform to Church teaching; promoting Catholic principles and the significance of Vatican II in the mass media and art; hosting events that bring artists, academics and others together to renew dialogue between faith and reason; offering penitential celebrations; and putting a focus on liturgy, especially the Eucharist, it said. The Congregation said it wanted to promote the recommendations because the office s specific functions include not only safeguarding sound doctrine and correcting errors, but also, and foremost, promoting the truth of the faith. The Congregation s note, drafted on the orders of Pope Benedict, was written in consultation with other Vatican offices and with the help of the Year of Faith Preparatory Committee which operates under the auspices of the Doctrinal Congregation. CALLED TO BE TRULY CATHOLIC Holy Mother the Church has opened for us the New Roman Missal, to help us strengthen our faith, to better focus on Jesus. It is our responsibility to join in this preparation during the ongoing Year of the Liturgy and the forthcoming Year of Faith to understand God s plan for us and live by His Word. 16 MUDDY BOOTS THE PARADOX OF THE DISTRACTED VIEWER Is Google making us dumb? About two years ago, Nicholas Carr had asked this question in an Atlantic Monthly essay. There is now a huge body of work by various Western scholars and experts on how consuming information and entertainment on new media devices chips away at the ability to read, concentrate and reflect, to quote Carr. In how many meetings, cinema halls and restaurants have you encountered this scenario a mobile phone rings loudly, someone takes the call, says I will call you later, and cuts the call. What always foxes me is, why bother to take the call? Why not keep it on silent and just return the call after you have finished whatever you are doing? This is not just about mobile manners. It is about our inability to apply intellectual thought to our work and lives. The ability to sit through a 30- minute meeting and focus on that alone, to read a piece or watch a film and enjoy it or absorb it completely: are we losing the ability to do that? Carr reckons that more than 15 years of the internet has changed the way we read. We tend to consume information in bits and pieces, skim through, speed read or power browse, again to quote him. An overwhelming proportion of Indians are young, many brought up post-liberalisation, on the internet and mobile phone. And their ability to focus is pathetic. In most classrooms that I am part of, students find it impossible to read a couple of pages continuously. Their friendships run on digital fuel and need very little physical attention. So social skills are a huge issue, something that almost all research throws up. Therefore dark, narcissistic, inward-looking kind of films such as Dev D or shows such as Emotional Atyachar on UTV Bindass, go down well with this generation. Vanita Kohli-Khandekar (2011) Excerpts sourced from the internet On the morning of December 4, parishioners were caught surprised at the sight of young boys and girls in colourful jerseys running helter-skelter around the length and breadth of the parish. They knocked on doors, posed for snaps and used all their little grey cells looking for clues and cracking codes. The event was Muddy Boots, a parish youth treasure hunt, conceptualised and innovatively presented by the St Anne s Youth Movement. 11 teams, comprising of two members each, took part in this amazing race. Beginning from the church compound, they cracked puzzles and clues to decipher the location of successive clues. They also had to perform an activity at each location like clicking snaps, and even having a soft drink at New Sunrise Restaurant. Many of our parishioners supported this event by keeping clues in their homes and answering the doorbell for each team. The last clue led them back to the church compound. The surprise winners of the competition were Aditi Karmarkar and Lucille Miranda who got back in record time. Aaron and Deepika came in next, followed by Sandia and Rinaldo. The winners were awarded handsome prizes, thanks to our benefactors and sponsors. All the other participants were awarded Gift Vouchers for their efforts. Everyone was utterly exhausted after the event, but the verdict was unanimous: a thumbs up! And a heartfelt desire that we need to have more such events in the coming months. The next time however, can we use bicycles, please? 17 MISSION EXPERIENCE AT TALASARI The confirmation students of St Francis Xavier Church, Vile Parle, had a three-day mission experience at Talasari. We stayed just a kilometre away from the Maharashtra- Gujarat border, at a place called Uplath. Our gracious hosts were a Jesuit Community headed by Fr Malcolm and Fr Stephen. At the outset, we were briefed on the expectations and the goals of the trip. We met Fr Joe who had lived and worked in Talasari for 12 years. He told us about the Warli tribe, their tradition, their dances and the difficulties that they faced from the other communities. Our visit to Dayanand hospital where we met Sr Hilda, who was involved with leprosy patients, challenged us to overcome the reluctance and fear that we felt to meet them. Fr Brian, Fr Leroy and Br Amit interacted with them, as if they were old friends, and this taught us the valuable lesson of acceptance and not to judge a book by its cover. Sr Hilda explained to us the symptoms, stages and causes of leprosy, and also about how the patients were thrown out of their homes and banished from society, for no fault of theirs. We had a little sing-song session for them that lightened their mood, and got them singing and dancing with us. We then visited the Warkhanda Dam. Despite its magnificent view, it disturbed us since a million people were forced to migrate for the construction of this dam. The Warkhanda Dam was striking by its beauty and serenity, and we were astonished that such a place even existed outside a movie. In the evening light, the water reflected the mountains, creating an image of peace and tranquility. Our journey back to Uplath was followed by a short Mass, celebrated by Fr Gavin D Souza, who preached on the life that we, as Catholics need to live one of humility, of giving, of service and of spreading God s Word. The next morning, we had to trek up the mountain. If the sight of snakes and palm-sized spiders freak you out, you are better off without that trek. We climbed for around an hour, till we reached the mountain top. There, we had Mass on the rocks, celebrated by Fr Brian; a huge boulder served as the altar and the smaller rocks as seats. There was greenery and life around. Wherever we looked, we could see the hand of God. Standing atop the mountain, we got a bird s eye view of the entire expanse of land, and also saw the border between Maharashtra and Gujarat. The beauty of God s Creation left us at a loss for words. Fr Brian asked us to value and to appreciate the beauty, the clean air, and life itself. A short rest break was followed by basic village tasks which our groups had to complete within an hour, like harvesting some crops, making a path easy to walk on, and carrying firewood from an open area to the storage room. After completing our work, we were taken to the oldest church in Talasari in the village of Dhodarpada. We were then separated into groups again, and with 2-3 villagers as our guides, we went visiting the houses of the people in the village to know more about their culture and tradition. Most of them worked on fields that did not belong to them, and earned a meagre wage. Out of the harvest proceeds, a small percentage goes to the tiller for his upkeep. Yet, all the children went to school or college, and a few were even doing diploma courses, displaying the high value the tribals put on education, in spite of the hardships that they face. With every house we went to, and each person we met, we realised that even though they faced so many difficulties, every single person had a smile on their face and in their eyes, which was a very touching experience. We left Talasari with fond memories of the people and the place. Our experience showed us that the Holy Spirit strengthens the faithful with beautiful qualities of patience, kindness, love, joy and peace. We came back as better people. We learnt what responsibility, humility, generosity and wisdom really mean. We learnt to be grateful for what we have. Truly speaking, we were apprehensive at first about the trip, but now looking back, we have no complaints. However, one thing s for sure; there s nothing better than our parle ka pani. Thank you once again to each and every one who guided us throughout this mission. A special thanks to Fr Gavin D Souza and his team of animators for organising this life-changing trip for us. 19 O B I T U A R Y / R E V I E W BOOK REVIEW Christian Themes in Indian Art: from Moghul Times until today Dr Anand Amaladass, SJ and Rev. Dr Gudrun Lowner (New Delhi: Manohar 2012) ISBN Christian Themes in Indian Art: From Moghul Times until Today is a pioneering work presenting Christian themes in Indian art, architecture and paintings from the beginning of Christianity in India, more prominently in the Moghul times till today. The authors passion towards the work is reflected in the meticulous recording of each painting from each source throughout the volume. Though the authors have mainly dealt with paintings and sculpture, they have supplemented this with one chapter on architecture, particularly that of Church buildings, and one on popular art, including stamps. More than 1,100 rare coloured illustrations make this publication a unique reference book. It is the first complex treatment of the theme done in the last 25 years. Special emphasis is given to artists who as Hindus, Muslims and Parsees have chosen to paint Biblical themes. The book contains paintings from both Christian and non-christian artists of different periods. The book is not a mere collection of paintings and sculpture, but is interspersed with good texts on inter-cultural encounters and Christian-Muslim dialogues. There is also a short introduction about the painters and their work. The late Muslim M. F. Hussain, whose faceless Mother Teresa pictures became icons, is presented side by side with his close friends, a Hindu - Krishen Khanna, a Parsee - Jehangir Sabavala, Satish Gujral, V. Nageshkar, Anjolie Menon, Ramachandran and the Sikh sisters - Amrita and Rabindra Kaur Singh. The Who is Who of Indian Art History, is presented from a new angle. Christian artists include the late F.N. Souza, A.D. Thomas, Angela Trindade, A. Fonseca, V. Masoji, F. Wesley (both by Naomi Wray), C.J. Anthony Doss, Alphonso Doss, S. Raj, J. Sahi, L. D Souza- Krone, Sister Claire, et al. Every library and individual interested in intercultural encounter between India and the West in art, intercultural theology, dialogue and history must have this book. This large volume was preceded by a small paperback in German, Christliche Themen in Indische Kunst (Frankfurt, 2009). An art lover s comments on the book, Interestingly, they say that Christian themes have almost disappeared from modern Western art. But they haven t really disappeared; they have just gone and settled in India. The book will be launched with lectures at the Heras Institute, St Xavier s College, Mumbai on January 17, 2011 from 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm. The Jesuit Prof. Dr Anand Amaldass from Chennai will speak on popular art and Dr Lowner on Indian Christian Miniatures. 20 N O T E S & C O M M E N T S India gets its 11 th Cardinal Nirmala Carvalho, AsiaNews Pope Benedict XVI appointed 22 new cardinals from 14 countries, including Major Archbishop George Alencherry, head of the Syro-Malabar Church, on January 6, The announcement was made simultaneously at the Vatican and at the headquarters of the Syro-Malabar Church in Kochi, Kerala. Major Archbishop Alencherry is the eleventh Indian and the fourth Syro-Malabar prelate to become a cardinal. Interviewed by AsiaNews a few hours after the publication of his appointment, Major Archbishop Alencherry stressed: The most urgent concern is that the message and the testimony of the Church s life is made more real in the world, according to the mind of Christ and the spirit of the Church. Major Archbishop Alencherry is the leader of the Syro-Malabar Synod since May His appointment followed the death of Cardinal Varkey Vithayathil. The cardinal-designate was born in 1945, to a Catholic family in Kerala, the sixth of ten children. Two of his brothers are priests, and one sister is a nun. Ordained a priest in November 1972, he attended the Sorbonne and graduated in Catechesis at the Catholic Institute of Paris. On returning to India in 1986, he worked in the Catechetical Centre of Changanacherry and as a teacher at St Thomas Apostolic Seminary Vadavathoor. John Paul II appointed him bishop of the diocese of New Thuckalay on November 11, His selection as the first bishop of Thuckalay in Tamil Nadu came as a surprise to many. But he quickly silenced his critics by learning Tamil in a matter of months, and connecting with villagers. He is known as a man more of action than words. During his tenure as bishop, he could be seen in the villages, mingling among parishioners. Upon assuming the role of Major Archbishop, the cardinal designate treaded a cautious path, avoiding controversy while keeping a sharp eye on Church affairs and favouring dialogue to resolve conflicts and achieve consensus on matters in and outside the Church. Within months, he convinced many of his worthiness to succeed the late scholar Cardinal Varkey Vithayathil. The cardinal-designate speaks fluent Malayalam, Tamil, English and French. To his credit, he has also published many books and articles. He is the spiritual leader of about 4 million faithful of the Syro-Malabar Church, that dates back to St Thomas the Apostle, popular in India, the Gulf countries, Europe and the United States (Chicago). This nomination is a recognition of the Apostolic See and in particular of Benedict XVI to the Syro-Malabar Church. For me personally, [the nomination] adds responsibilities to my office of archbishop. It means that I will have to take even greater care of the universal Church and bear witness to Christ in the world. The Feast of the Epiphany [when the new Consistory was announced] is the feast of the manifestation of Christ to the world. The unity of the Church and of the cardinals with the Pope should make his presence manifest. I would like to dedicate myself with even more care to this task, he said. Mar Alencherry is the eleventh Indian to be elevated as Cardinal. He is the fourth in the line of Cardinals in the Syro-Malabar Church after Cardinal Joseph Parecattil, Cardinal Antony Padiyara, and Cardinal Varkey Vithayathil. On his elevation as Cardinal, Alencherry has become one of the four Indian prelates who have voting rights in the Papal elections. A Diocesan Ecumenical Commission Fr Gilbert de Lima Given the fact that Christians form the third largest percentage of the Indian population, when united we are indeed a force to reckon with. The need for us, therefore, is to present a united face, and collaborate together at various levels, on different issues in the interest of the nation. The Holy See in The Directory for the Application of Principles and Norms on Ecumenism of March 25, 1993, while presenting norms for the establishment of a diocesan ecumenical Commission or Secretariat, highlights the following considerations: (my comments appear in italics) 20

N O T E S & C O M M E N T S 1. It states that the diocesan Bishop should set up a council, Commission or Secretariat charged with putting into practice any directives or orientations he may give and, in general, with promoting ecumenical activity in the diocese. (No. 42) 2. This Commission or Secretariat should reflect the totality of the diocese and generally include among its members clergy, religious men and women and lay people of various competencies, and especially those with particular ecumenical expertise. It is desirable that representatives of the Presbyterial Council, the Pastoral Council, diocesan and regional seminaries be included among the members of the Commission or Secretariat. Also this Commission should cooperate with such institutions or ecumenical initiatives that already exist, making use of their help when the occasion arises (No. 43). 3. Besides the other functions already assigned to it, the Commission should: (No 44): a) put into practice the decisions of the diocesan Bishop for implementing the teaching and directives of the Second Vatican Council on ecumenism, as well as those of the post- Conciliar documents emanating from the Holy See, Synods of Eastern Catholic Churches and Episcopal Conferences. Incidentally, the focus at the Second Vatican Council in the decree on Ecumenism is reflected in the very title of the decree: Unitatis reditegratio ( Restoration of Christian Unity ). This has also been the emphasis in subsequent papal documents, noticeably the only encyclical on ecumenism which was appropriately entitled: Ut Unum Sint (1995) ( That they may be one ). b) The Commission should also strive to maintain relations with the territorial ecumenical Commission, adapting the latter s recommendations and advice to local conditions. When circumstances suggest, information about experiences and their results as well as other useful information should be sent to the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity. c) It should also foster spiritual ecumenism according to the principles given in the Conciliar Decree on Ecumenism and in other sections of this Directory about public and private prayer for the unity of Christians. The decree Unitatis reditegratio began by highlighting the need for metanoia as the starting point for ecumenical relations, and it is only the Spirit who can convict us and challenge us to seek a deep and lasting reconciliation. In this connection, we ask ourselves that if the Prayer for Christian Unity is prayed only during the Unity Octave, does it not amount to mere tokenism? d) It should offer help and encouragement by such means as workshops and seminars for the ecumenical formation of both clergy and laity. Seminary training of future priests should also possess an ecumenical dimension, so that this will empower them in the pastoral care of the people entrusted to them. e) The Commission should also strive to promote friendliness and charity between Catholics and other Christians with whom full ecclesial communion does not yet exist, according to the suggestions and guidelines given below. Developing an attitude of friendliness and welcome can break the ice and initiate the beginning of ecumenical relations. f) The Commission can also initiate and guide conversations and consultations with them, bearing in mind the adaptation to be observed in accordance with the diversity of the participants and subjects of dialogue. g) It can also propose experts to undertake dialogue on the diocesan level with other churches and ecclesial Communities. h) It needs to promote, in collaboration with other diocesan bodies and with other Christians joint witness to Christian faith, to the extent that this is possible, as well as cooperation in such areas as education, public and private morality, social justice, matters connected with culture, learning and the arts. In fact, marturia (witness), an essential feature of the early Christian communities has been recovered by the ecumenical movement! Setting up such a Commission with these concrete goals would ensure that we possess an instrument to take the ecumenical cause forward. It would be a concrete body to ensure that our commitment to ecumenism is not merely lipservice, but that we seek to translate into practice the ideals we are committed to in the various documents of the Church. Families squeeze together in little matchbox houses they call homes. Hygiene is terrible. Diarrhoea and malaria are common. Tuberculosis floats in the air among other such illness. Welcome to Fishermen s Colony, between Colaba and Nariman Point in south Mumbai, a place made infamous as the landing spot for the 26/11 terror attacks. A walk through Fishermen s Colony is a journey through a dank maze of ever-narrowing passages until the shanties press together so tightly that daylight barely reaches the footpath below, as if the slum were a great urban rain forest, covered by a canopy of plastic, asbestos and corrugated metal sheets. Walking down these narrow lanes and making his way into the immaculately clean houses was local Cardinal Oswald Gracias, as he surprised the people of Fishermen s Colony by choosing to spend time with this community during Christmas week. He truly made Emmanuel - God dwells among us come alive, as he reached out with compassion and love to bring Christ s message of hope to this poor community. He not only found his way into the slum and their houses, but also into their hearts. Cardinal Gracias then proceeded to visit some of the sick and housebound parishioners of Holy Name and prayed with them, offering them courage and hope. As a shepherd, Cardinal Oswald not only spoke about putting love into action, but also led the way. Bishop Bosco felicitated on his 75 th birthday Bishop Bosco Penha was felicitated on his 75 th birthday by the FILMC Team Members and Office Staff. The FILMC Team and the Office Staff recalled images, events, instances and incidents that defined and described his life and persona. A plethora of epithets were used to describe his sterling qualities of head and heart, that have made him a successful, revered, respected and loved bishop. He was singled out to be a prayerful, spiritual, holy, simple and unassuming, humorous and humble bishop, who never failed to touch anyone who came into his life. His discerning, sharp intellect, learned and erudite quality as a prolific writer and a powerful speaker came in for appreciation. Among the other brilliant abilities of Bishop Bosco, one cannot forget his dynamic and goaloriented leadership that inspired and energised others to give their best in the SCCs which was his brainchild in this part of the continent. As we congratulate and felicitate Bishop Bosco on 75 years of love, we pray that God may grant him many more years of good health, vigour, fitness and strength to carry on with his wonderful work and to achieve even more for God s kingdom. A proactive response to build a civilisation of love A group of 250 students in the age group of 13 to 15 years as well as their teachers, animators and principals brought in the New Year in a novel manner which was a proactive response to build a civilisation of love. These groups of students from Delhi, Mumbai, Indore, Ujjain, Orissa, Noida and other places, braved the inconvenience of long hours journeying by train and bus, to participate in a unique gathering at Somnath Prakalp, a branch of Anandwan of Baba Amte, that aims to Transform The World By Transforming Self through the practice of five paths. There were four days of intense interaction within the group where age, religion, position was no bar. Each participant came up with an action plan for the year 2012 to build a civilisation of love by accepting to live a pluralist spirituality of acceptance, appreciation and promotion of differences. The New Year was ushered in by a candlelight procession where lighted candles on a huge map of India, and a symbol of the different religions drawn beautifully on the ground, reminded the participants to light a candle instead of cursing the darkness in the year Remedian Book Stall launched The Remedian Book Stall was opened on November 27, 2011, in the parish of Our Lady of Remedy Church, Poinsur under the care of the Hope and Life Movement. Fr Peter D Mello, along with the Parish Team, was very supportive and extended all facilities required to run this stall. Sisters of the Daughters of St Paul animated the members of the Hope and Life Movement. They were very cooperative, and even though their age ranges from 40s to 70s, all expressed eagerness in carrying out this new apostolic initiative. 24 N E W S Indian Bishops: Urgent need for law on inter-religious violence The Communal Violence Bill (CVB) is an urgent and important law for a mature democracy like India, says the Bishops Conference of India (CBCI) commenting on the non-inclusion of the law on inter-religious violence in the winter Parliamentary session. Commissioned by Sonia Gandhi s National Advisory Council (NAC), the CVB gives the Central Government the power to intervene directly in cases of inter-religious violence, bypassing the state authorities. The need for this law has arisen since the events of Gujarat (2002) and Orissa (2008) where, in the face of huge Muslim-Hindu violence and radical Hindus against Christians, Delhi was not able to operate without the request of the local government. Opposition forces, some allies of Gandhi, and activists continue to criticise the Bill, found to be unconstitutional for this opportunity given to the Central authorities. For the Bishops Conference, the law is designed to ensure the state authorities perform their duties fairly and impartially. To support this, the CBCI has clarified two points deemed controversial by detractors of the CVB. The first concerns the definition of group, understood as a religious or ethnic minority, in any Indian state, or castes and tribes recorded in accordance with the provisions 24 and 25 of Article 366 (definition of castes and tribes) in the Constitution. For critics - said the CBCI - this affirmation divides the nation. But nowhere does the law discriminate against the majority. Indeed, the CVB is to allow the victims of majority community as well as those of minority communities to enjoy the same rights. The second controversy revolves around the direct intervention of Central Government and the power of the national authorities to make provisions to state officials. In fact, as explained by the Bishops Conference of India, the law only provides for the establishment of a national authority, an external body with the task of monitoring the cases of inter-religious violence. This body would only be informative, recording the cases in which juridical loopholes have been found.... AsiaNews Kerala Church celebrates Russian Christmas An Orthodox Church in Thiruvananthapuram organised a Christmas celebration for Russian nationals last week. The Russian Christmas falls on January 7, and the Mar Baselios Mar Gregorios Malankara Orthodox Church in Sreekariyam along with the Honorary Russian Consulate in the district organised the special prayer for the 40 Russians. Some of them are attached to the controversial Koondankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP). The prayers were held in three languages Syriac, national Malayalam and English. A tiny crib was set up in a corner of the 25-year-old church. At the far end, the Madbaha gleamed in gold and red, and above it was a fresco of a benevolent-looking Christ descending from the clouds. It was only the other day that I got to know that the Orthodox Church was available in India. I knew there were Protestant and Catholic churches, said Alexander Maminev, a Russian national who is part of KKNPP. In future also, we hope to come to the church, on special occasions like Easter, for prayers, he said. Antony Smirnov from Ryazan said he missed his parents who celebrated Christmas back home, but described the Indian Christmas as a pleasant experience. Back home, Christmas is a national holiday. We come out on to the streets. There are games and social activities, he said. Honorary Russian Consul Ratheesh C. Nair said the consulate was planning to hold more elaborate celebrations from next year. Fr George Varghese, who led the service, said, we had to arrange it at short notice, and couldn t even inform all our churches.... CathNewsIndia / IBNLive WEST BENGAL Church promoting renewable energy & solar panels The Seva Kendra Calcutta (SKC), a social service centre of the Archdiocese of Calcutta, West Bengal, has been promoting renewal energy technology among rural people for the past five years, including solar lamps and low-cost, smokeless fabric that are eco-friendly, easily available and economically viable. The first village involved is Kalidaherpota, in the north of Parganas District, West Bengal. The people of Kalidaherpota have no electricity. They depend on small kerosene lamps to light their homes. Because they are kept inside, these lamps expose users to a polluted domestic environment. For children, this can cause vision problems and reduce the time they can dedicate to their studies. When the sun sets, social interaction in the village is restricted as well. The kerosene that is used is rationed to 200 ml per person per week, and expensive Rs in the open market, SKC director Fr Reginald Fernandes explained. In fact, kerosene has an impact on families in terms of education, economics, social relations and health, Fr Fernandes said, because human exposure to emission of carbon dioxide and other gases cause health hazards like pulmonary, visionary and skin diseases. Light plays a great role in the life of people at all levels: health, educational, social, cultural and more. Introducing solar energy, especially light, improves people s well-being, he added. Under the scheme, community participation also creates 24

opportunities for cooperation in the entire community through seminars geared towards unemployed youth who are taught how to make solar panels. Kalinagar is another village that has benefited from solar energy. Like Kalidaherpota, the village of 850 families is not connected to the power grid and its residents have to rely on expensive kerosene. With the help of Caritas India, they were able to buy solar lanterns for Rs 700 (US$ 13) at a subsidised price. After we made an agreement with the people of the area, we started the process. We trained 20 youth from the area for a week, Fr Fernandes said. They produced 850 lanterns and sold them in three months, earning Rs 12,000-15,000 each. Children now find their studies much easier as the solar lantern gives them light, the priest said. At the same time, they are making products for neighbouring villages. SKC has been giving training and producing solar lanterns for the past six years. It has also trained people in the states of Gujarat, Bihar and Tamil Nadu.... AsiaNews Nun to share malaria cure success at UN Two nuns of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth order in India have been invited to attend the UN General Assembly next month. One of them, Sr Anjana Kunnath, claims to have found a successful herbal cure for malaria in Artemisia, a family of plants and herbs that includes tarragon and wormwood. I am attending the UN General Assembly to share the success stories of people who were cured of malaria with Artemisia [a herbal extract], said Sr Kunnath. Sr Beena Chirackal is flying to New York as a result of her impressive work in rehabilitating children of commercial sex workers. The duo will embark on a twoweek internship from February 27. Sr Kunnath s success story started three years ago. The North-east region of India, where she works, receives a large amount of rainfall and has large areas of marshland, making it a mosquito paradise. Sr Kunnath, who has worked for 20 years in the eastern states of Bihar and Jharkhand, treated over 250 malaria cases in 2011 with the herbal extract. She recalls many instances where she has administered either a tonic or pills made from the herb to people who come to her health centre, revealing it was a Jesuit priest who introduced her to the herb in A year later, she attended a workshop on herbal remedies conducted by a German pharmacologist, Hans- Martin Hirt, who was promoting Artemisia. Because the variety of the herb is very expensive, Hirt tracked down the patent-holders of the actual plants in Germany, and began to get seeds for distribution in Africa and India, she said. national N E W S Sr Kunnath said malaria reduces haemoglobin levels in the blood, while Artemisia counters this decrease and increases the body s immune system.... CathNewsIndia SHILLONG Fire destroys church A 10-year-old Catholic church building was razed to the ground by a raging fire. The inferno in the Visitation Church at Mawprem in Shillong, started around 1.30 am and completely destroyed the wooden structure. No one was injured in the blaze, parish priest Rev Fr Leo Iawbor said. Local rescue workers tried to extinguish the blaze after fire tenders were delayed, due to overnight parking in the narrow roads leading to the church. Asked if he suspected arson, the parish priest said: We don t suspect anybody to be behind the fire tragedy. We think it could be because of an electrical short circuit. Fire and emergency services officials, meanwhile, have started an investigation to find out the exact cause of the blaze. We are yet to determine the cause of the fire, but preliminary investigations hint at an electrical short-circuit, deputy fire service officer SC Nath said. He estimated the loss in the fire to be around Rs 2 million. Hundreds of people, including Archbishop Dominic Jala of Shillong, visited the site. Meanwhile, Fr Iawbor said the parish will construct a new structure soon, and Mass would be celebrated at the school hall as a temporary arrangement.... CBCI News / IANS/ The Shillong Times GOA Blessed Joseph Vaz on celluloid A film on the life of Blessed Joseph Vaz has been produced to popularise the little-known priest, who is just a step away from sainthood. Agnelo Fernandes, a youth from Consua-Verna, has produced the film based on the life and missionary works of the patron saint of Goa. His 300 th death anniversary was celebrated last year on January 16. The producer of Panvlam has highlighted the missionary life of Bl. Joseph Vaz in Sri Lanka and the challenges he encountered. Samiro Rodrigues plays the role of Bl. Joseph Vaz while Eltrich Fernandes enacts the role of the saint s assistant, Joao. Bl. Joseph Vaz went to Sri Lanka when it was under Dutch occupancy and Catholicism had been almost obliterated from the country. He lived as a mendicant and secretly ministered to the Catholics. The Goan priest died in that country. Scenes like the miraculous rain, taming of the wild elephant, prosecution of Christians, the house arrests of Bl. Vaz are the highlights of the film.... timesofindia.indiatimes.com 25

John Tong Hon (Chinese), Bishop of Hong Kong In keeping with papal custom, Benedict XVI also named 4 new cardinals who are already over 80 years old, and hence ineligible to take part in a future conclave. These are honorary appointments, used to recognise lifelong service to the Church in some capacity. Four honorary cardinals: 1. Archbishop Lucian Muresan, Major Archbishop of Fagaras si Alba Iulia (Romanian) 2. Monsignor Julien Ries (Belgian) 3. Augustinian Fr Prosper Grech (Maltese) 4. Jesuit Fr Karl Becker (German) international Among the new cardinals, 10 are currently serving in senior positions on the Roman Curia, while 8 are archbishops of major metropolitan sees. Pope Benedict also announced that he would honour five clerics Major Archbishop Muresan and 4 priests by raising them to the College of Cardinals in recognition of their outstanding service to the Church, although they are above the age of 80, and therefore ineligible to participate in a papal conclave. These appointments bring the total number of votingage cardinals to 126, six more than the ceiling of 120 established by Pope Paul VI. That number should drop back down to 120 on July 26, when American Cardinal James Francis Stafford turns 80; five more cardinals will have crossed the threshold of 80 by that stage. The total number of cardinals in the world, including voting and non-voting cardinals, will be CBCI News UK Bishop decries Indian student s killing Bishop Terence Brain of Salford has said the killing of Indian student Anuj Bidve was a dreadful tragedy during the celebration of Christmas. Bidve died as a result of a single gunshot wound to the head as he walked along Ordsall Lane in Salford on December 26. Bishop Brain said: A young man s life was stolen when we were all rejoicing at the gift from God of the birth of the Christ child. We offer our prayers and condolences to the Bidve family, and pray that the Lord who comes to us at Christmas welcomes him into eternal life. The bishop has called for people to pray for the causes of the emptiness which led to the killing of the student. The bishop added that the killing was a dreadful tragedy in that it was apparently so random and motiveless; how empty must be the life of the person who stole Anuj s life? That too is a dreadful tragedy, and we must pray about the causes of such emptiness, he added. Kiaran Stapleton, 20, from Ordsall, Salford, has been charged with the murder of Bidve and is in custody.... Roger Macalma and his sister were arrested at their home in Balbuena village in connection with the death of Fr Florante Rigonan on August 28, A third suspect, another sister named Liwliwa, gave herself up to police later. 26

Fr Rigonan was shot dead after leaving the house of Florencio and Elisea Macalma, relatives of the suspects, who had returned to retire after four decades of working in San Francisco. The arrested pair allegedly hired two gunmen, still unaccounted for, to kill Fr Rigonan over a property dispute. The couple had donated five million pesos (US$108,000) and raised 250,000 pesos more from family and friends abroad for the construction of their new parish church, which Fr Rigonan oversaw. According to witnesses, Roger, Lydia and Liwliwa Macalmas the couple s nephew and nieces did not like Rigonan s appointment as administrator of the couple s properties in the Philippines. The priest had also been given gifts, including a trip to the US and a service van for his parish activities.... UCANews PAKISTAN People remember martyr governor Hundreds of people gathered to remember Salman Taseer, a year after the Punjab governor was assassinated by his bodyguard for speaking out against the country s controversial blasphemy laws. In Lahore, about 300 students, lawyers and human rights activists joined the slain governor s family in a candlelight vigil at Liberty Chowk, a well-known gathering point in the city. At the same time, workers from the Catholic Bishops National Commission for Justice and Peace, the All Pakistan Minorities Alliance and the Centre for Human Rights Education spoke out against the blasphemy law and demanded the safe recovery of one of Taseer s sons who was abducted last month. We are of his blood, we shall continue his mission, other children of Taseer said, placing a candle in front of a giant poster of their father. Elderly Christian women, in tears, greeted them and assured them of their support. Faiza Ahmed Malik, a member of the Provincial Assembly demanded that the death sentence handed to assassin, Mumtaz Qadri, be carried out swiftly. The delay will encourage similar murderers, she said. Meanwhile, across town, about 1,000 Muslim hardliners gathered at a shrine in support of Qadri. There they demanded swift punishment for Aasia Bibi, a Christian woman on death row for blasphemy, and who Taseer had tried to support. They also claimed Taseer s murder was justified because it was carried out according to Islamic dictates. They also called for the gun used to kill Taseer to be put up for auction, as it was now an object with holy significance.... UCANews international N E W S USA Pope creates Ordinariate in USA In response to numerous requests, Pope Benedict XVI on Sunday, January 1, established an Ordinariate for Anglican groups and clergy in the United States who wish to become Catholic. It is only the second structure of its kind in the world. The Pope also named a Houston professor and former Episcopal bishop, Reverend Jeffrey N. Steenson, to lead the Ordinariate. The establishment of the Ordinariate follows the publication in 2009 of the Apostolic Constitution Anglicanorum Coetibus, in which the Holy Father made certain provisions to welcome Anglicans into full union with the Catholic Church, while allowing them to retain many of their distinctive traditions. The Ordinariate of the Chair of Saint Peter will be based in Houston, Texas. The only other Ordinariate is Our Lady of Walsingham, established in January 2011 to serve England and Wales. Similar to a diocese, though national in scope, the Ordinariate will include parishes, groups and individuals of the Anglican heritage across the United States. Parishes will be fully Catholic, while retaining elements of their Anglican heritage, particularly in the liturgy. Over 100 former Anglican priests already have applied to become Catholic priests for the Ordinariate, and nearly 1,400 individuals from 22 communities are seeking to enter. Fr Steenson, who will be the Ordinary, became Catholic in 2007, and a Catholic priest in He is married and is the father of three adult children.... 28 L E T T E R S to the E D I T O R A new concept of a parish Sir, The existing parish structure emerged and came into existence, centuries ago, in the Western world where the majority of the population was Roman Catholic. That historical, sociological and religious situation has now changed, and we are living in a different universe altogether. Keeping this in mind and guided by the Holy Spirit, the Church has updated and widened the traditional concept of parish. The Church now tells us that our parishes should not be restricted to Catholics, but all those residing in the geographical area of the parish are our parishioners, irrespective of their religious adherences. The Parish Priest (PP) is also their pastor who must extend his pastoral care to all of them, as he does to the Catholics under his parish jurisdiction. This new understanding of the parish, the identification of the parishioners and the pastoral role of the PP are extremely important and a great blessing in disguise for India, a multicultural and a multi-religious land. Here s an opportunity to enhance the prestige of the Church, making it less Roman and more Catholic. The updated concept of the parish which the Church has announced offers the priest opportunities to make use of his talents for initiating programmes, both spiritual and material, that are novel and which benefit all, especially those who are most in need. To make such programmes successful, the priest will have to elicit and ensure collaboration from the parishioners, identify and tap various resources from the community, devise an efficient management system that will ensure continuity, stability etc. Obviously such an involvement in the welfare of the parishioners, though trying and tiring, will doubtless bring to the priests deep joy, satisfaction, fulfilment and add to his zeal and enthusiasm to continue showing God s love all around. William Macwan, SJ,Vidyanagar, Gujarat Christ s homilies short & simple Sir, This is in response to Benwen Lopez s letter titled Homilies The breaking of the Word (The Examiner Dec 10, 2011). I would like to inform Mr Lopez that the term faithful does not refer only to people who endure sermons that last for over 20 minutes. Nowhere in my Sunday School education was I informed of this eligibility criteria. As per my knowledge, the Gospel is rather self-explanatory. Jesus preached to lay people, not always the learned. Hence his teachings were kept short and simple, and almost always consisted of parables and stories. At the end of these, came a simple moral or an explanation that taught people how to live their lives keeping these parables in mind, so as to be better human beings. I am not a member of the clergy, but I think a simple anecdote or story that can be associated with the Gospel, and a simple and precise suggestion of how to incorporate Jesus teachings into our everyday lives, will suffice as a suitable homily, with less boredom and a lot more meaning and understanding. Let us not confuse our faith with our attention span. Claudelle Monis, Kurla (W) Lokpal Bill Sir, The Lokpal Bill is being touted as the panacea for the ills our nation suffers. The focus of the Bill is only on public servants and ministers. We are well aware that private individuals and businesses have amassed ill-gotten wealth with impunity. We all have neighbours who have risen from rags to riches by means most foul. In a country where we worship money, it is naive for us to imagine that any law or authority can get rid of corruption. Robin Mathews, Mumbai ME Testimony Sir, My beloved husband Kumar and I testify to the powerful impact the ME Weekend in June 2011 has had on our marriage. It was a special time that has helped us as a couple make the most of our marriage. It primarily focuses on the Spousal Relationship and connecting with our Feelings. We were able to identify deep-rooted problem areas which we were blissfully unaware of - added to this our hectic and busy lifestyles had taken a toll on our marriage. Our sheer ignorance led to the small cracks (heated quarrels, harsh words, playing the blame game, faulty parenting, negative thought process, misinterpreted feeling of being used) and hindered our chances to have a healthy marriage. Overtly, everything seemed so normal, but in the silence of our hearts, the gnawing guilt of hurting each other in our moments of weakness was very painful. The constant confusion as to where are we heading as a couple, are we serving as a role model to our children and family members and friends all this and more cluttered our minds. But all Praise and Glory to God! The Weekend served as a revival in our 28

L E T T E R S to the E D I T O R marriage. We shared with each other from the depths of our hearts all the fears and misunderstanding were seen in a different light altogether at a deeper level, the ME weekend brought us both to a strong realisation that For Better or Worse, our marriage is a Covenant of Love, a precious Gift from the Almighty. If something has to change, the change has to begin with ME. This change has not been overnight, but an ongoing process. Our marital life is a journey of togetherness, not a destination. Vanessa and Kumar, Borivli West Nuns too must give communion Sir, Catholics in the South are generally more orthodox than their counterparts in Mumbai. Holy Communion in Vailankanni, Poondi and other churches in the South, is given only on the tongue. Another unique feature is that the crowds notwithstanding, Holy Communion is distributed by priests and the religious (nuns) only. In Mumbai, Eucharistic Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHC) are indispensable. Without them, services in some large churches, such as in Orlem, would have to be extended by half an hour on Sundays and for hours during Holy Week and Christmas. Moreover, the EMHC do house visits for the old and sick. This, however, is no reason why the religious should play a secondary role. In the hierarchical order, the religious should be the first after the celebrant to distribute Holy Communion. Convents are usually situated in close proximity to churches. There are a good number of religious present at daily Masses. Very often, we hear the celebrant requesting the religious present in the congregation to help out during distribution of Holy Communion. It should be the other way about. The religious present in the congregation should be the first to step forward. Prof Robert Castellino, Orlem Skills for SCC Animators Sir, It was a unique experience to participate in the Skills for SCC Animators seminar held at Sarvodaya from November 4-6, There was something very valuable at each of the sessions. We begun with the Eucharist celebrated by Bishop Bosco Penha. In his homily, he said that animators must reach out to everyone in the community, especially the lonely. In the session on Deepening Prayer Life we learnt the Centering Prayer and the need for silence. The process of tackling disputes and taking them towards a positive conclusion was explained in the session on Handling Conflicts. We had a handson experience of working together in groups in the exercises on Building Team Spirit. The attributes of a good Christian leader and of servant leadership were dealt with in the talk on Enabling Leadership. The surprise package was the lively fellowship and entertainment at the end of the first day. On the second day, we were exposed to some practical sessions on Working with People of other Faiths, Assertiveness and Holistic Growth of an individual. Besides the opportunity to meet and interact with animators from other parishes, the programme was very enriching and helpful, not only to become better animators, but also, better human beings as well. The two days were really well spent. John Bosco Assis Fernandes, Dadar Stop coalition politics Sir, Another Republic day Celebration and we find ourselves in the midst of a freedom struggle from the greed and corruption of our politicians. Coalition politics is a cancer that afflicts democracy in India today. Many years of coalition politics has thrown up a myriad of scams, blackmail, and what is most injurious to the nation, a paralysis of the government. Redemption lies in the restructuring of the Constitution as much as it concerns election. There is a very strong need in a country riddled with parties that spring up at the drop of a hat, for coalition set-ups to be taken out of the system of democracy. One way to achieve that is to have President s rule if and when no single party on its own wins a 2/3 rd majority. The second way is to have re elections after disqualifying parties that do not achieve the benchmark to be decided before the elections. There should be no seat sharing between parties; each party must field its own candidates. Stand-alone candidates will not be allowed to join government nor support it from outside. This will limit regional parties to their own regions. This is the need of the hour, else our democracy will soon degenerate into a form of government that will not be recognised as a democracy. This form of democracy will definitely not be sought after by any other nation, and our country will be no better than the banana republics of this world. Llewellyn Ferreira, Orlem 29
