2 CURSILLO A way of Living, uniquely gifted, for bringing about the New EVANGELIZATION Cursillo (cur SEE yo) is a voluntary Lay Movement of the Catholic Church started in Spain, which presents a method and strategy for living basic Christian Ideals. The inherent message of Cursillo is to share one s Christianity in the normal everyday activities of life with your family, in your workplace, in your neighborhood, in your parish community, and throughout the whole world. Our Mission is the Church s mission. We re fully Catholic, and obedient to the Magisterium. Cursillo was endorsed by Pope Paul VI (1966), Pope John Paul II (1980) mentioned Cursillo as one of the tools of the New Evangelization, and Pope Francis (2011) wrote an inspiring letter encouraging cursillistas in their work in Argentina. Cursillo in the Archdiocese of Detroit is a voluntary lay administered organization founded in 1962, and focused on evangelization. Cursillo collects no dues or fees of its member participants. ULTREYA is published Monthly by the English Language CURSILLO Movement of the Archdiocese of Detroit. Views and / or opinions expressed in this newsletter are those of the authors and contributors, only, and not necessarily the views of the AOD. Contributors can submit information, articles, artwork or other information to the publisher, Gordon T. Peck at gordontpeck@aol.com for inclusion in the Newsletter. Archived copies of the Newsletter are available on the Detroit Cursillo website I WANT TO SEE! 2

5 School ofleaders C.L.U.E. Workshop Saturday, January 9, 2016 Several Team members from Women s Weekend Team #392 and many other cursillistas attended the third C.L.U.E. Workshop put on by the School of Leaders in the past twelve months. The C.L.U.E. Workshop (Cursillistas Live the Method, Understand the Movement, and Evangelize Environments) traces the progression of the Weekend rollos and explores opportunities to make the Weekend a spiritually rewarding and informative experience for the candidates. Roles of the team members at each stage of the three evenings and three days are reviewed and time proven techniques are explained and imparted to the attendees. The C.L.U.E. Workshop has proven to be a popular method for training of cursillistas that wish to serve on Teams. But the four hours dedicated to the effort was in some ways not enough. Many past Rectors who were in attendance had significant organizational skills and techniques to share that were not part of the Agenda, but were well worth reviewing. It may be time for a two-part C.L.U.E. Workshop to be introduced to cover these additional items. Special thanks to Rita Etlinger, Marie Garavaglia, Anne Modes, Karen Jogan, Ann Sliney, Larry Davis and Barb Davis for their contributions as program lecturers. - Gordon Peck (Coordinator, School of Leaders) 5

7 Autonomous Controls? - Gordon Peck The North American International Auto Show is in Detroit, and the talk frequently turns to autonomous vehicles you know, the ones that will drive themselves and take us where we want to be. For many of us, trusting a computer control system with our lives is a step we re not yet ready to take. We like to take the wheel, be in charge and determine our own course. Experiments have shown that the autonomous cars are involved in a higher percentage of accidents than typical traffic. But it s not what you re thinking the reason for the high percentage of accidents is that while the computer controlled car plays by the rules the individually controlled cars break the rules and change lanes suddenly without signal, tailgate and exceed the speed limit. We are a proud people, who insist on doing it our way. This is not news. Adam and Eve proclaimed it loud and clear in the Garden of Eden they thought they d try it their way...and how has that worked out? The LORD loves a humble person. Jesus demonstrated that in His dealings with the Pharisees. He was more put out by their arrogance and insistence that they knew it all. After all they had studied scripture day and night. They could recite scripture forwards and backwards, but when Truth stood before them, they did not recognize HIM. Their society was self-assured that it had the right answers, that it s understanding and policies were appropriate and politically correct. They had an autonomous control that could have guided them to salvation, but they chose to take the wheel themselves as often as they liked. The autonomous control of their time was the Prophets who spoke the word of GOD to them in every age but as we know, these truths often fell on deaf ears. They did not accept any autonomous control are we any different? not with regard to cars, but in our relationship with our LORD? Do we have all the tools we need? The Mass? The Sacraments? Prayer? Pride is the greatest, or should we say the worst of all sins, because it separates us from GOD and we should know by now WHO is better qualified to sit behind the steering wheels of our lives, shouldn t we?

16 A man can no more diminish God's glory by refusing to worship Him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling the word, 'darkness' on the walls of his cell. C. S. Lewis and GOD created Humor! GOSSIP Mildred, the church gossip and selfappointed arbiter of the church's morals, kept sticking her nose in the other members' private lives. Church members were unappreciative of her activities, but feared her enough to maintain their silence. She made a mistake, however, when she accused George, a new member, of being an alcoholic after she saw his pickup truck parked in front of the town's only bar one afternoon. She commented to George and others that everyone seeing it there would know what he was doing. George, a man of few words, stared at her for a moment and just walked away. He didn't explain, defend, or deny; he said nothing. Later that evening, George quietly parked his pickup in front of Mildred's house... and left it there all night! LOTTERY A guy named Joe finds himself in dire trouble. His business has gone bust and he's in serious financial trouble. He's so desperate that he decides to ask God for help. He begins to pray... "God, please help me. I've lost my business and if I don't get some money, I'm going to lose my house as well. Please let me win the lotto." Lotto night comes and somebody else wins it. Joe again prays... "God, please let me win the lotto! I've lost my business, my house and I'm going to lose my car as well". Lotto night comes and Joe still has no luck. Once again, he prays... "My God, why have you forsaken me?? I've lost my business, my house, and my car. My wife and children are starving. I don't often ask you for help and I have always been a good servant to you. PLEASE just let me win the lotto this one time so I can get my life back in order." Suddenly there is a blinding flash of light as the heavens open and Joe is confronted by the voice of God Himself: "Joe, meet Me halfway on this. Buy a ticket." 16
