Now they can locate unattended homes so much more easily - often within seconds of people posting comments about being on holiday on these social networking websites. Thieves once had it hard having to wander about neighbourhoods, peering over hedges, bribing milkmen, looking for empty houses. Now it is so much simpler: they stay at home and surf the internet - and can track down your address from a one-line posting within 60 seconds, according to researchers. Thieves look for messages such as packing my cases and just landed with a smiley face, only hours after the sender s location was given as an airport. How do they do it? A check on the family name and, for instance, the name of their child s school, cross referenced with an online address database, shows the location of the home. The study, by Co-operative Travel, goes on to warn people that their children are the worst offenders, as 51 per cent of young people tell their all their friends about the forthcoming holiday... meets in St Lawrence School at 09:45 on the dates shown All children aged 3 upwards are welcome July/Aug No Meetings St Lawrence Sunday School 18 Sept Theme to be arranged Wendy & Celeste For further information contact Hilary Darque (453929) or Lyn Holness (764210) Flower Rota for Church Flowers Sunday 3 July Sunday 10 July Sunday 17 July Sunday 24 July Sunday 31 July Bridget Stephens Bridget Stephens Wedding Wedding Audrey Ellis-Gibbons 11

3 FOR THE CHILDREN Our Vicar s Page July is often a month of goodbyes. Younger children leave one school and prepare to move to another in September and older children leave school, for the last time, to go to higher education, or work. Young people will be leaving university, they will be feeling sad because their student days are coming to an end, knowing that they will probably lose track of friends as they move away to find work. Some teachers choose the end of the school year to say goodbye to the school that they have been teaching in for some time using the summer to prepare for their move to a new school. In June we celebrated the Ascension, the occasion when Jesus left his disciples, for the very last time, and went be with his Father in heaven. Some goodbyes enable new things to begin, they are in fact gateway events. The return of Jesus to heaven enabled the Holy Spirit to come into the lives of ordinary men and women, giving them the courage to do Jesus work and start the first small churches. A group of inspired men and women were able to do a lot more than one man could, even though he was the Son of God. There comes a time when children have to let go of school in order to become adults and begin work, or higher education. Leaving places and people behind is a part of our human experience. As we grow we change and we become too big for the place that we have been in this is especially true for children at different stages of their education. At each point of change we might think that we are not ready, but after we have moved on we soon realise that we are fine and that we are enjoying being in that new place, with those fresh experiences. Life can be painful and there are some goodbyes that devastate us the loss of our spouse, or the death of a close friend. We have no choice but go on into what is a changed life, living in our own strength and in greater strength of the Spirit. Sometimes, people look back with amazement at the things that they have done and the adaptations that they have made realising just how resilient human beings actually are. The experience of being left behind has been painful, but it has also allowed growth in new and previously unimagined ways and it has helped them to discover new things about themselves. As we listen to adults and children expressing their sadness at having to say goodbye and leave a familiar place behind, we need to encourage them to look forward in anticipation of what lies ahead. We need to try to understand how they might be feeling at this time and we need to offer them comfort, while we keep them in our prayers. Carol 3

4 Date for your Diary: An Iona Style Service: 6:00 pm, Sunday 24 July The abbey on Iona, the tiny island off Mull was started by St. Columba in the 6th century ; a tiny Christian community that takes it's worship from the beauty of its surroundings, the cycle of the seasons and the principle that there is no division between the sacred and the secular. We are fully present to God in what happens in church on a Sunday and all the rest of our lives in the week. Traditionally the Iona Community, in this Celtic form of worship, is concerned with the political and social activity of the world around us; justice and peace. This service will be a quieter service for the end of the day, with hymns and space for reflection. An oasis of peace. Do please join us at St Lawrence. Ron. St Swithun s Day - 15 July: A Saint for a Rainy Day St Swithun is apparently the saint you can blame for rainy summers. It is said that if it rains on his special day, 15 July, it will then rain for forty days after that. It all began when he was made Bishop of Winchester in 852 by King Ethelwulf of Wessex. It was an important posting: Winchester was the capital of Wessex, and during the 10 years Swithun was there, Wessex became the most important kingdom of England. During his life, instead of washing out people s summer holidays, and damping down their spirits, Swithun seems to have done a lot of good. He was famous for his charitable gifts and for his energy in getting churches built. When he was dying in 862, he asked that he be buried in the cemetery of the Old Minster, just outside the west door. If he has been left there in peace, who knows how many rainy summers the English may have been spared over the last 1000 years. But, no, it was decided to move Swithun. By now, the 960s, Winchester had become the first monastic cathedral chapter in England, and the newly installed monks wanted Swithun in the cathedral with them. So finally, on 15 July 971, his bones were dug up and Swithun was translated into the cathedral. That same day many people claimed to have had miraculous cures. Certainly everyone got wet, for the heavens opened. The unusually heavy rain that day, and on the days following, was attributed to the power of St Swithun. Swithun was moved again in 1093, into the new Winchester cathedral. His shrine was a popular place of pilgrimage throughout the middle ages. The shrine was destroyed during the Reformation, and restored in There are 58 ancient dedications to Swithun in England. 5 Visit the People s Bible The People s Bible, a handwritten, online, digital Bible has been launched by Bible Society in England and Wales and The Scottish Bible Society. From June to November it will tour the country, visiting towns and cities across the UK. The aim is to give people the chance to re-engage or engage with the Bible for the first time. Thousands are expected to answer a call to Make Your Mark in History and hand-write a couple of Bible verses, using a digital pen, to mark the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible. Once written the verses will be uploaded from the pen to the internet and available on-line at www. thepeoplesbible.org/ The People s Bible tour began at Edinburgh Castle on 19th June, the anniversary of the birth of King James VI of Scotland, at the castle, in It will feature contributions from senior public figures and celebrities and part of it will be bound and presented at a national service of celebration to mark the 400th anniversary. The service, at Westminster Abbey on 16 November 2011, will be attended by Her Majesty The Queen. Carol s Schedule Although the dates printed in June's edition of the Parish Magazine are the days that Carol anticipates working, ie Sunday morning, Monday, Tuesday morning and Thursday, if anyone has a particular need and would like to speak to her on other days concerning issues that are of an urgent nature or of concern, please do feel free to contact her. Celeste From the Registers May 10th 2011 Funeral and Thanksgiving service for the late Mrs Dorothy Smith from Kemsing and formerly Broadhoath. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family. People in their mid-20s need an annual income of 39,720 if they want to afford a wedding, buy a house, and have their first child. 6 Sevenoaks Area Youth Trust SAYT is a Christian Trust founded in 2001 to employ, manage, train and support Christian Youth Workers in the Sevenoaks area and: Undertake detached youth work (i.e. not in a centre or youth club) in the streets and parks in local towns and villages wherever young people are. Provide a limited but regular presence in schools. Encourage and support other youth workers in local churches who run youth clubs. Funding for the work of the Trust is provided by a cross-section of local churches together with local individuals and some grant funding. John M Lead me not into temptation! Dear Residents, You may recognise my name, I was for a number of years an active burglar in your district, nothing big, just the small opportunist stuff, but it kept me in beer and baccy for a good number of years. I m reformed now and trying to keep to the straight and narrow. However, it now grieves me to see how easy it is to pick out the empty house as I walk around the streets of your town or village. Today there are so many people stuffing rubbish through your doors not the postmen, they are trained to push letters and junk right through the letter box, but the people who are paid a pittance to deliver advertising blurb to every house on the estate. They don t have time to make sure that the leaflets go right through and mostly leave part of the bumf sticking out for all to see. These guys used to be my friends. I would watch them do a street or two and about an hour later walk the same route that they had followed. I could be pretty sure that where their leaflet was still visible the residents were not at home. So down to the front door, a quick ring, no reply, and then round the back to get in; so easy. Don t tempt me. Please tell those who deliver leaflets advertising pizzas, fried chicken, chinese cuisine, holidays, insurance and so on, (or even church magazines), to ensure that the items they are delivering are pushed right through the letter box and not left sticking out as a tell-tale that the house is empty. With all best wishes, your reformed neighbourhood burglar, William (Bill) Sykes Mean Time The early music ensemble was founded in 2003 in Greenwich, with the aim of creating innovative and varied programmes of music which are accessible, and appeal to a wide range of audiences. Specialising in work with the recorder they are also proficient at singing and playing the baroque flute and harpsichord. Often praised for their versatility they cover repertoire spanning the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods as well as a little contemporary music. All members studied early music at Trinity College of Music or The Royal College of Music under the direction of Philip Thorby and Ashley Solomon. Since leaving college they have all enthusiastically entered the teaching profession and enjoy enriching the lives of young people through music. John M What happens in heaven when you pray? I dreamt that I went to Heaven and an angel was deputised to show me around. Our first stop was at a large room filled with angels. They were unfolding, reading and stacking thousands of bits of paper, of all sizes. My angel guide explained, This is the Receiving Section. Here, all petitions to God said in prayer are received. I looked around the area, and it was terribly busy. Angels were sorting out petitions from all over the world. Some were long and involved and weighty, others merely a sigh on a scrap of paper. Then we moved on down a long corridor until we reached the second section. The angel said to me, "This is the Packaging and Delivery Section. Here, the graces and blessings that have been asked for are processed and delivered to the people who need them." I noticed again how busy it was there. The angels were working hard to package and send back to earth all the blessings that had been requested. Finally, at the farthest end of the long corridor, we stopped at the door of a very small station. To my great surprise, only one angel was seated there, doing nothing much. "This is the Acknowledgement Section, my angel friend said quietly. He seemed a bit embarrassed." How is it that there is no work going on here?', I asked. The angel sighed. "Well, after people receive the blessings that they ask for, it seems very few think to send back any acknowledgement." "How does one acknowledge God's blessings?". I asked. "Simple," the angel answered. Just say, Thank you, Lord. And mean it. Christians are the only people in the world who have anything to be happy about. - Billy Graham 6 7
