1 October 2018 Volume IV The Scrolls Now the work begins on the inside. The platform has three sets of stairs. Walls are going up for a changing area to use for baptisms. You can t see it but on each end, there are stairs that lead up into the baptistry. Dry wall is finished. The carpeting is in front of the platform and on the stairs. The flooring looks like wood. It s very durable. You can see (to the right) our chairs stacked and waiting to line up them up in rows S. Homestead Rd., Pahrump, Nevada (775)

2 PAGE 2 Pastors Corner Hello everyone! Well we finally gotten out of summer, and fall is upon us! This is an exciting time of year for me, because I love cool weather. I hope that you are excited about fall, because we have fall, Thanksgiving and then winter, and Christmas! We are in the midst of our revival currently, it's our third annual revival. I'm excited about what God's doing in our folks. It reminds me of what David said in the Psalms. In the 51st Psalm, David says in verse 10; "Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me." That is what revival meetings are all about. It is about people hearing the word and making changes in their lives. The Bible says that we are to cleanse our hands new sinners and purify your hearts you double minded. So, revival is about cleaning out all the things in our lives that need to be put away. Whatever that might be, the things we do that we know don't please God. A preacher doesn't need to tell us, when we read the Word of God it should be clear to us what we need to do. Then all that remains is to do what we know we should do. You might say, you make it sound easy, that I say yeah you have a good point. But, it really is easy, Philippians 4:13; says, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." So, pray, pray, pray then put feet to your prayers. God will help you succeed in that which is called you to do. So, take heart, be renewed, have the right heart attitude! There's no telling what a Christian can do, when they're totally yielded to God. Have a great month! Pastor John I Morris

3 PAGE 3 Pastors Corner Continued-- Your Turn to Serve Many times in my life I have ask God to burden my heart for what burdens Him. Reading Gods Word, the Bible, we find in the book of Matthew 25:36-37 (For I was an hungered, and ye gave me meat; I was thirsty, and you gave me drink; I was a stranger, and ye took me in; Naked, and ye clothed me; I was sick, and ye visited me; I was in prison, and ye came unto me). Jesus showed the disciples that their generosity and caring for people around them was the same as if they had done it to Him. Jesus helped them see that people who were down and out were important and that He was very interested in them. This lesson in kindness and caring was necessary for the disciples and all believers to learn how to apply it to their lives. In the scripture we just read Jesus mentioned six common situations that are with us today hunger, thirst, stranger, naked (without means), illness, incarcerated. When we look to Jesus by reading our Bibles, praying, listing to our Pastor preach the Word of God we see that Jesus was known for ministering to the crowds of people as well as individuals. As we grow as individuals, and as the Church you will find yourselves caring more and more about what Jesus cares about. Could it be that Jesus is calling you to a ministry as well? Have you ever thought about the different ways that you could be part of the ministries Jesus mentioned. Here at South Valley Baptist Church we encourage you to seek out direction from our Lord and speak to the Pastor about what God has laid upon your heart. In our prayers we should ask God to guide us to accomplish our call and to strengthen us as we learn to serve God by serving others. Pastor John M. Dodge

4 PAGE 4 July was a very busy month: On July 8th we visited the Indian Springs Baptist Church. We meet some really great people and made some friends and contacts. Even meet up with a member of the church that used to be one of my co-workers. We enjoyed the Sunday School lesson and the service was good also. They were preparing for their VBS which took place at the end of July. I let them know I was available if they needed any help. The following week, July 15th, we were in AZ at the Dolan Springs Baptist Church. It was a nice little church. They were mostly older folks with a few children. Their pastor was on a six-week vacation so they had a pastor come from Las Vegas coming out every Sunday to do their sermons, which was good. The congregation was very friendly (like our church family), it turned out to also be potluck Sunday! We let them know also that I am available to help in any way that might be needed. The pastor that was there and a few others were from Sunrise Church in Las Vegas and they invited us to come visit them. I have not gotten there yet but I am sure that it will happen soon. The following week, July 22, I was back in AZ. I attended the Galilee Missionary Baptist Church in Williams AZ. Very nice small church, mostly all adult there was only one family with children. The services were run totally different from our services, very interesting. They did not have an acting pastor at the time so they also had an outside preacher while we were there, he was from the Phoenix area. The gentleman that was the leader at the church said he would call and I would be able to do a sermon for them in September but I have not heard from him yet. Maybe they have found the pastor that they have been looking for. I will probably go back in the near future to visit them again. The first week in August I was back in AZ down on the San Carlos Reservation attending and speaking at two funerals, one on Saturday and one on Sunday. I also had the opportunity to preach on Sunday morning. In August I have finally been able to attend our church and see friends and family. I have been busy talking to people about Christ, handing out tracks and flyers for the revival and of course teaching Sunday School. 6 PAGE 6 Sir Robert Anderson Many Christians have never heard of Sir Robert Anderson. Sir Robert was dubbed the Secret Service Theologian. He is one of mine favorite Christian to read of. He seemed to describe himself as an anglicized Irishman of Scottish extraction (Forgotten Truths, Sir Robert Anderson, Kregel Publications, Michigan, Biographical Sketch, Warren Wiersbe, p.viii-x). Matthew Anderson was the Crown Solicitor (a lawyer) in England. He was a distinguished elder in the Irish Presbyterian church. Matthew married Mary Lee, and thus Robert Anderson was born. He was born on May 29, 1841, in Mountjoy Square, in Dublin, Ireland. Robert Anderson was privately educated in Dublin, Paris, and Boulogne. Both of his parents were very devote Christians. He enjoyed writing as a child. As a teenager, Robert had some serious doubts about his conversion. His sister convinced him to go the Irish Revival, but the popular hymns disturbed him, so he got very little out of the evangelist s message. But Robert had the tenacity to go and attend church the following Sunday and heard Dr. John Hall. Dr. Hall s message was so disturbing that Robert remained after to argue with him, but Robert lost the argument, and gained eternity with Jesus. He said: I will accept Christ. And afterward I turned homeward with the peace of God filling my heart, (Biographical Sketch, p. ix). In1859, he entered Trinity College, and graduated in 1862, and called to the Irish Bar in Soon after Robert s conversion, a messenger came with a letter from a friend, who was unable to preach at a gospel meeting and asked Robert take the service. Robert had been asking God the ultimate question: What do you want me to do? (Me, paraphrased) First, he turned the offer down, but he ran after the messenger, and said yes. The next day he preached his first gospel message, and continued on. The Fenians were a group of insurrectionists who attempted to overthrow the British rule in Ireland. Robert s brother, Samuel, was the Crown Solicitor for Dublin Castle, so Robert became involved interrogating the Fenians prisoners and preparing legal briefs. He wrote a dossier: The History of Fenianism. Because of Fenians Movement, the English government decided to establish a secret service department, and Robert was one of two deputies. So Robert moved from Dublin Castle into London and became a secret service agent. He married the love of his life, Lady Agnes Alexanderina Moore, in They had five children. Robert continued his work at Scotland and became the Assistant Metropolitan Police Commissioner. He was the highest ranking officer in the Jack-the-Ripper murder investigation, and he more evidence and knowledge of the case than any other officer. He made a statement that the murderer had been caged in an asylum ( The murders stopped. Robert retired from the police in May 1901 and knighted that same year. He wrote seventeen books after retirement and continued his lay-preaching. One of the best books that he ever wrote was The Coming Prince. It was one of the most exhaustive books that have ever been written on Daniel s Seventieth weeks and the Antichrist. Sir Robert Anderson was a student of the Word of God, and he wrote with conviction and passion. After an illness of influenza, he fell asleep and woke up with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on November 15, By Mary Kirkland-Walker

7 PAGE 7 The month of September has been nothing but outstanding. The youth group name has been decided to be called, SWAG (SAVED WITH AMAZING GRACE). Also we have grown in numbers and in souls! We had five youth accept Christ and a couple who are inquiring about baptism. Thank you for all of your support and look forward to some upcoming fundraisers from our youth group!! Joel & Sheena Dean-Leaders WINGS (Women s In God s Service) WinGS - Women in Gods Service is open to all women and young women of the church, and you don't have to be a member to come. We meet each month for breakfast and share a verse or two of scripture and talk about upcoming events we can become involved in. Oct 13 at 9am at Denny's. We will be packing shoe boxes for overseas in the beginning of November for Samaritan's Purse Christmas shoe box. We are in need of standard size shoe boxes or the same size light plastic containers. 8 PAGE 8 EDITORIAL PAGE Fall Season Started What Season Are You In? If you were to evaluate your current situation or season in your life, how would you describe it? Would you consider yourself as a dry, waiting, grinding, tests & trials, or spiritual warfare in your life. I m sure there are other seasons too. We know that seasons change. There is winter, spring, summer, and fall. As seasons change, it relates to seasons in our lives. In order to get through any season, you have to first recognize where you are. The Bible tells us in Ecclesiastes 3:1, To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. We know God is in control of all of the seasons, whether natural or within life. It s important for us to recognize that from the start. The Dry Season For Christians, we would call this a spiritual dryness or dry season. You feel like you can t hear God s voice or sense His presence. To get through this, draw closer to God by reading and praying. Talk to Him, He is there. He hasn t left us. Psalm 37:7 says, Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass. It s also good to do a self-examination. Check to see if there s anything that may be causing you in this dryness (like unconfessed sin). If you think so, confess it, ask His forgiveness, repent, and keep drawing closer to Him (1 John 1:9). He s a loving and forgiving Father. Dry seasons don t last forever. This season will change. Just keep the faith, going to church, and praising and worshiping Him. The Waiting Season We all know that waiting is not easy. Waiting for circumstances to change, waiting on something to be completed, or waiting on your purpose, waiting can be quite difficult. You can get through this season. God has not forgotten you. He s making you ready. However long it takes, He is equipping you for something exciting! Keep the faith, don t doubt, and wait with excitement. In Psalm 5:3, My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up. He s listening and knows exactly where you are. Continued on page 9

9 PAGE 9 The Grinding Season Some of us (especially Type A personalities) fall into this category. It seems like when the holiday seasons come, I don t have enough time to get everything done. Ask God for direction the moment your feet hit the floor when you get out of bed. Start with your priorities first to help reduce your stress. You'll be surprised at how much you get accomplished when you do this. Remember to take breaks and pray during the day. God gives you strength, His provision, and divine grace. Rely on the Holy Spirit to lead and help you get through the grinding season. Tests & Trials Season If you re going through some hard times in this season, know that God is with right there you. It s hard when you re in the middle of it, and you might not even understand what you re going through or why. Don t give up! God will reveal to you when it s time. This season will pass. Ask Him to comfort and strengthen you. Allow Him to strengthen and increase your faith. In 2 Corinthians 4:17 says, For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory. Don t look at the troubles now. Wait to see what God has for you! The Spiritual Warfare Season If you are in spiritual warfare, hold on! If you are being spiritually attacked, obviously you re doing something right. We know the devil doesn t like it. When you re walking by faith doing what God has called you to do the enemy will rally up his troops and start a war against you. Recognize what s happening and put on your full armor as Ephesians 6: Through every battle there is an end. Someone wins. Let it be you! We have God on our side and we know that God is a BIG God! What season of life are you in? Remember to have faith, pray and listen to God!
