The greatest migration in history Some wandered in desert wastelands, Finding no way to a city where they could settle. They were hungry and thirsty, and their lives ebbed away. 3 God is bringing the people to cities From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. 5 City Transformation Is the integration of the good news and the good deeds of Jesus so as to bring about spiritual and societal transformation City Transformation Spiritual transformation occurs when an increasing number of people are loving God with all their heart, soul, mind and strength Societal Transformation occurs when an increasing number of people are loving their neighbors as themselves 5

6 What might that look like? Isaiah 65:17-34 The city is a delight (v.18) Do people of all ethnicities delight in the city? Where are the places of celebration, fun and beauty? Do people love coming to the city? Its people are a joy (v.18) Do residents and visitors love being in the city because of the people? Do people feel better after being around the people of the city Well-being of children (v.20) What s the infant morality rate? Pre-school readiness /3 rd grade reading levels, High School graduation rate, # of kids in poverty Elderly living long and full lives (v.20) How does the city rank in longevity? What kind of services look after the elderly? Quality / availability of health care, Activities / relationships for elderly Housing (v.22) Reducing number of chronically homeless, Number of homeless students, Renting / ownership ratios, The opportunity to own my home Food (v.22) No food anxiety, Community gardens, Food rescue, School food programs 6

7 Isaiah 65:17-34 Justice of sowing and reaping (v.22) Work and reward (reaping commensurate with sowing), The chance to get ahead, Youth can see the rewards of hard work Meaningful work (v.22-23) Systemic generational poverty eliminated Intentional job creation, Innovation, Employment opportunities, Skill training for available jobs Intergenerational family support (v.23) Number of kids in Foster Care, Flipping the script in adoption, Single moms with support system, Orphans who have mentors Hopeful future (v.23) Are people hopeful about their future and the future of their children? College opportunities, I can be more than my parents Upward mobility Connected to God (v.24) What percentage of people have a relationship with Christ? Increasing number of people connected to a faith community and making a difference in the world Absence of violence (v.25) Number in jail / prison, Crime rate, Safe neighborhoods, Domestic violence and violent crime reduced City Transformation occurs when. the whole church takes the whole gospel to the whole person in the whole city 7

10 A city movement is a collection of centered sets They unify around blessing This is what the Lord says to all those I carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because as it prospers, you too will prosper. Jeremiah 29:4-7 10

11 Cause / Effect Seek the peace and prosperity of the city and pray for the city The city prospers You will prosper The Whole Gospel Is the integration of the good news and the good deeds of Jesus 11

12 Good News and Good Deeds Jesus Ministry You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, telling the good news of peace through Jesus Christ how God anointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good because God was with him. Acts 10:36-38 Worldview Every worldview must answer two questions: What is wrong with the world? How does what you believe propose to fix it? Tim Keller 12

13 Creation Gen 1:21 very good THE WAY IT OUGHT TO BE The Fall Everything was broken relationship with God (Gen 2:17), self (Gen 2:25), others (Gen 4:8), the planet (Gen 3:17-18) THE WAY IT IS and one day will be fully restored THE WAY IT WILL BE ONE DAY Rev. 21:1 Everything that was lost in the fall was redeemed at the cross Col 1:19-20, Luke 19:10, 2Cor 5:19 Redemption Until that time God invites us to join him in that restoration Matt 6:10 WHAT IT CAN BE What if part of our job was to help everyone in our community discover what part of brokenness they are called to redeem? 13
