7 Reformation 500 Why are we celebrating Protestant Reformation? There is, course, magnitude this year s particular anniversary (500 years!), and also gratitude we feel for blessing our heritage; Reformers mselves, however, would abhor thought doing anything apart from a basis in Scripture, and so I point to inunction Hebrews 13:7: Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you word God. Consider outcome ir way life, and imitate ir faith. Indeed, bold proclamation word God in face hardship and threat death characterized life and ministry John Knox. John Knox Not much is known about John Knox s early life. He was born about 1514, and he was ordained a Catholic priest in He converted to Christ in 1543, but though Knox himself authored first history Reformation in Scotland, we do not know how his conversion came about. In 1545, he began to follow Scottish Reformer George Wishart, traveling with him throughout Scottish Lowlands preaching gospel, and protecting him from would-be assassins with a two-handed broadsword. Early in 1546, aware that his arrest and execution were imminent, Wishart sent Knox away, and was burnt at stake only weeks later. Following assassination corrupt Roman Catholic archbishop St. Andrews, who had been responsible for Wishart s martyrdom, Knox was caught up in political turmoil, oined a company Protestants, and was besieged with m in St. Andrews Castle. When castle fell after French came to aid Catholic regime in Scotland, he was enslaved in a French galley, chained to an oar for 19 months before being released to England. There he preached gospel to newly crowned Edward VI, at St. George s chapel in Windsor Castle. When Mary Tudor ("Blood Mary") ascended to throne he went into hiding, subsequently fleeing to Geneva, where he assisted John Calvin in his ministry. In 1559, Protestant members Scottish nobility wrote to Knox, pleading with him to return to Scotland and pledging to aid and protect him. Knox returned to St. Andrews, and upon his arrival began to proclaim gospel, despite a warning that he would be shot that moment he began to preach. Revival spread through Scotland, and in 1560 Scottish parliament adopted Knox s Scot s Confession as rule for faith and practice. The struggle was far from over, for next year Mary, Queen Scots, still a practicing Catholic, ascended throne. Mary tried to maintain Catholic faith in her court, in defiance Scottish parliament, and for rest his life, John Knox found himself fighting for truth in face her resistance. One Sunday in 1565, Lord Darnley, Queen s husband, heard Knox preach in St. Andrews; he was so angered by what he heard that he summoned Knox and forbade him from preaching when he and Queen were in town. Knox s response was to write down sermon as best he could from memory (he always preached without notes) and publish it. In se words, spoken ust a few years before his death, we see his love gospel, his zeal for word God, and his hope in Christ. Dr. Nathan Davy Let us now humble ourselves in presence our God; and from bottom our hearts let us desire Him to assist us with power His Holy Spirit that He let us not forget His mercy, and that glorious Name that hath been proclaimed among us. Give us, O Lord, hearts to visit Thee in time our affliction; and that albeit we see none end our dolours, that yet our faith and hope may conduct us to assured hope that oyful resurrection, in which, we shall possess fruit that for which now we travail! John Knox, from A Sermon, on Isaiah 26:
