Submission! Ephesians 5:21-6:9 Context Eph 5:21 And further, submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Remember Paul is writing the to the church, so this is addressed to us! The end of v20 puts all the focus on God, our desire. He the adds that we need to operate out of submission to one another as an action of that devotion to Christ. Obedience and submission are big themes in scripture, we are to obey God and be submitted to him, although of course we have free will as to whether we obey or not, unlike the angels. Here Paul takes the theme further, he puts the idea of submission into the context of the church, we are supposed to express the oneness in Christ which he has been discussing by living our lives in the context of submission to each other. Obedience is a strong attribute for the follower of God. The OT people of God were expected to obey God and the NT believers are supposed to do the same. There is something about obedience and submission that brings the fullness of God to earth. Obedience is the action of following God and submission is the attitude of the heart. A illustration from Saul King Saul is told by God to destroy the Amelekites. He is successful but doesn t fulfil the exact requirements of God. Samuel the prophet is sent with a message from God, and despite Saul s protestations God is not impressed. 1 Sam 15: 22 What is more pleasing to the Lord: your burnt offerings and sacrifices or your obedience to his voice? Listen! Obedience is better than sacrifice, and submission is better than offering the fat of rams. 23 Rebellion is as sinful as witchcraft, and stubbornness as bad as worshiping idols. So because you have rejected the command of the Lord, he has rejected you as king. Obedience and submission are fundamental to following God. God compares rebellion and stubborness to witchcraft and idolatry. Obedience and submission is true worship, it is the active decision to submit our will and make the object of our submission our worship. When we demand our rights or assert our independence then we are engaging is something as bad as idol worshipping, we are joining our hearts to something else and shutting out God. When we actively decide to live in a way that disobeys God s will for us then we are conspiring with darker forces in our lives. The church, the people of God are supposed to be a people that are guided and led by the

HS in obedience to God. In the life of the church we get to work out submission with each other reflecting our obedience to God. Paul has been emphasising our joinedness to each other, we as one body need to obey and submit to God and not just as individuals. Jesus phrases submission as poor in spirit in the sermon on the mount and he says that there is a reward of the kingdom for all those that live in this way (Mt 5:3). It is in this place of corporate submission and collective obedience that we can find freedom, find space to be who we are supposed to be. Now Paul uses 3 illustrations from normal life to ground this teaching. Marriage Eph 5 : 22 For wives, this means submit to your husbands as to the Lord. 23 For a husband is the head of his wife as Christ is the head of the church. He is the Savior of his body, the church. 24 As the church submits to Christ, so you wives should submit to your husbands in everything. 25 For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her 26 to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God s word. 27 He did this to present her to himself as a glorious church without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish. Instead, she will be holy and without fault. 28 In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as they love their own bodies. For a man who loves his wife actually shows love for himself. 29 No one hates his own body but feeds and cares for it, just as Christ cares for the church. 30 And we are members of his body. 31 As the Scriptures say, A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one. 32 This is a great mystery, but it is an illustration of the way Christ and the church are one. 33 So again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband. This is certainly not a culturally easy verse. In our generation there would be relatively few women that would interpret submission as doing what their husbands told them to! But the passage tells women to operate out of a submissive spirit towards their husbands just like they would to Christ. We should not get submission confused with status, in no way should be think that women are inferior to the men. The submission that is expected of the wife isn t really anything different from the mutual submission that is supposed to operate in the church with spirit filled believers. Culturally wives, children and slaves had no rights, Paul turns this on its head and speaks about the reponsibilities of these groups. Marriage is the basic building block of society, and as such there is a spiritual action going on in every marriage. The wife is called to express submission to her husband in the same way that the church is supposed to submit itself to the will of God. She plays the part of the church which is being prepared to the greatest marraige of all. The context like every marriage ceremony, is love. Husbands are supposed to express love to their wives, they are looking for a way to bless, comfort, provide, protect and support their wives, just like Jesus is looking for every opportunity to bless and comfort us, he is looking out for our best... so why wouldn t a wife want to submit if the motive was love?

It is in this love environment that submission works. When the husband if overbearing, controlling or abusive then the spiritual power of submission is denied. Where there is no sacrifice on the part of the husband, there is no context of love. This scripture is not talking about the whether women can be in leadership or not it is examining the way family relationships are supposed to work. Husbands act in headship, not about a dictatorial control but a life giving source. Headship is the privilege of serving those they are responsible for so, that is the God ordained role for the husband. The essence of headship is sacrifice, as Christ laid down his life for his church so are husbands to sacrifice for their wife and family. It is in their sacrifice that a safe environment can be created for the wife to submit. The spiritual power of sacrifice and submission lets a flow of life come. These scriptures are an antidote for relationships that are centred on our needs and wants. One party submits the other party sacrifices. This is about the mutual honouring for the best of the other person. Its in this environment that you find your true self. Same Sex Marriage With current legislation being proposed to legalise same sex marriage the church are being told that they do not have a monopoly on marriage and they should not be able to influence the nature or practice of marriage in the state. But marriage is a basic moral building block of our society and government should not be messing around with things that they do not know the consequence of. At one level it is argued that it is a meaningless change to the law, nothing will change to the gay couple apart from a felling of equality with everyone else, they already have the legal status of marriage. So what is all the fuss about? This is a spiritual battle ground. Marriage can not be redefined as between people of the same sex, it does not mean that. Marriage is not just a contract of convenience it is a sacred promise that joins us to God s design for created order. Marriage is described as a mystery, not only is it a prophecy about Jesus and the church it is a declaration about the spiritual order. Christians are not being kill joys, homophobic or discriminatory by opposing same sex marriage, we are defending the very building block of the social fabric of our nation. Nothing but trouble will come from such a policy. Family Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do. 2 Honor your father and mother. This is the first commandment with a promise: 3 If you honor your father and mother, things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth. 4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord. The 10 commandments includes the instruction to honour fathers and mothers, it is accompanied by a promise of blessing. Honour brings blessing. Honour is a great word as it holds in it the themes of sacrifice, obedience, submission and love, it wraps them all up in one word. Implicit in the biblical teaching of obedience and submission is the link to blessing. The people of Israel were commanded to obey and then they would be blessed.

Blessing (physical, spiritual, relationally) comes from lives that obey God and hearts that operate in submission. This is not about perfect children and perfect parents, this is about the right honouring of fathers and mothers. In the church it is vital that we learn to honour and respect the older spiritual mums and dads, this brings health to the life of the body, it sets things right. Parents beware Don t use your authority to become overbearing or controlling, that will get you no where. Being a strict disciplinarian can spill over into control and you can frustrate, hurt or even abuse your kids in the process of what you think is godly instruction and discipline. Remember the atmosphere of love that needs to pervade your family home. Employment 5 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ. 6 Try to please them all the time, not just when they are watching you. As slaves of Christ, do the will of God with all your heart. 7 Work with enthusiasm, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. 8 Remember that the Lord will reward each one of us for the good we do, whether we are slaves or free. 9 Masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Don t threaten them; remember, you both have the same Master in heaven, and he has no favourites. The passage is aimed in a culture where slavery was acceptable. It is not condoning slavery, rather it is commenting on a cultural norm of the time. Remember this was written to the church so there were believing slaves and believing slave owners. Slavery is not a very helpful context for us, so lets shift the idea to employment. We may have a pretty bad job, we may be poorly paid, we may even feel that we are like slaves... well this scripture is for you! Respect your bosses. Giving honour is something you can do even if the person does not deserve it! Honour is not just given to those that are worth it, honour is the action and heart of a person that sees God in each and every situation. Work hard. Don t just work when you are seen to be working but rather work hard and honestly all the time. Even if your job is boring seek to work hard and well, do it to the best of your endeavour! If you don t like it then you can always quit. Employing a Christian should be the best investment of a business. Do it for God. Be enthusiastic, get enjoyment out of it, you are serving God in the place you are. Submission is the heart that says I willingly do this even if the situation is difficult. There is a reward. Its ok to expect to get a reward. Your wages are earn t and its ok to get rewarded, you are more likely to get promotion and more money for enthusiastic hard work. Bosses.. give your employees fair conditions, treat them well and make sure that they are all looked after. Your position of authority is not an excuse to abuse your workforce, you are supposed to be operating for the best of the team.

Final thoughts In our society of rights and the need for independence this teaching can be watered down to the fit in with the culture of our day. Although it is important to fight for the oppressed and seek justice for those who are marginalised the insistence on our rights is the wrong spirit. We should fight for the other not ourselves. Our lives are supposed to be lived in submission and the honour of others. If you are in a leadership role (husband, parent, master) then your attitude should be for the good of those you lead not to get what you can. If you are commanded to submit (wife, child, slave) then your attitude is to serve the leader as far as you can. The mutual honouring of each other is the key to creating a culture of the kingdom.
