August 2, 2012 Volume 18, Issue 8 The Beacon The Official Newsletter of Broadmoor United Methodist Church Rev. Fred Wideman, Senior Pastor Mollylea Drive Baton Rouge, Louisiana (225) The Broadmoor United Methodist Youth Group (BUMY) would like to thank Broadmoor United Methodist Church for the prayers and support given for the two youth mission trips this summer. The first was the junior high youth mission trip to Austin, Texas in late June, and then the senior high Mystery Mission Trip to Gatlinburg, Tennessee in early July. Twenty-one junior high youth and five adults set out from the BUMY parking lot on Sunday morning, June 17 and drove to Austin, Texas to participate in local mission work in the Austin area under the direction of Group Mission Trips. Housing was provided by a local church, and Broadmoor worshipped and ate with kids from other parts of the country. During the day the Broadmoor s group was split up into two teams. One team went to minister to a nursing home, the other team went to minister to a nursing home in the morning and facilitate a vacation Bible school for an apartment complex during the afternoon. One of the evenings Broadmoor went to Austin s Park, which is a youth entertainment complex with go-karts, bumper boats, miniature golf and video games similar to Celebration Station. And later that evening, there was an attempt to watch the famous Bats of Congress Street Bridge emerge at dusk. Unfortunately, the bats did not cooperate. After three days of work, the group went to San Antonio for a day at Sea World. Lodging was provided by University United Methodist Church. The senior high Mystery Mission Trip left from BUMC s parking lot on Sunday, July 1. The destination was Gatlinburg, Tennessee. After an unexpected fivehour delay due to a tire malfunction, everyone arrived safely at 2:30 a.m. in Seymour, Tennessee at The Kings Academy, where they stayed for the week. During the day, Broadmoor s group was split into two teams. Each team did manual labor and house construction for families in need. In the evenings, they would come back to the facility and have worship sessions with other youth groups from around the country. On Thursday afternoon, the group went Whitewater rafting on the Pigeon River, and on Friday they went for a fun day to the Dollywood amusement park in Pigeon Forge. Both trips were growing experiences and relationship-building opportunities for all adults and youth who attended. Thank you again to all of you who supported these trips with your prayers, presence, gifts, service and witness!
Promotion Sunday Back to School Blessing During our four worship services on August 12, all students of any age, as well as all faculty, will be invited to come to the altar and receive a Back to School blessing. This is an excellent morning to invite your family and friends to church and let them know that we are praying for them as they start the school year. August 12 is Promotion Sunday in Children s Ministries! Children will move to their new classrooms/grade levels for the new school year. We will have back to school parties in the classrooms and meet our new leaders for our classes. Children who will be three by September 30, 2012 and older need to come to the check in location in the Children s Building (bottom of the staircase at the entrance facing Sharp Road) to locate their new classroom! Fall Bible study and small group opportunities are coming! Watch the Spotlight, Beacon and web site for updated information on topics, teachers, and beginning dates. All classes will start after Labor Day, September 3. Bishop Cynthia Harvey Assigned to the Louisiana Annual Conference The Rev. Cynthia Fierro Harvey, who heads the United Methodist Committee on Relief, the denomination s relief agency, has been elected as a United Methodist bishop by delegates at the South Central Jurisdictional Conference. Harvey was elected Thursday, July 19, at the jurisdiction s quadrennial meeting in downtown Oklahoma City. On the fifth ballot, she received 165 votes; a minimum of 144 votes was required for election. Harvey was the first bishop elected by the 256 delegates, an equal number of United Methodist clergy and laity, from the eight states that form the South Central Jurisdiction. The assignments of bishops in the South Central Jurisdiction for the next four years will be announced later in the week. Her four-year term of service begins September 1. Harvey was endorsed for the episcopacy by endorsed by the Jurisdictional Conference Women s Leadership Team and affirmed by MARCHA (Methodists Associated Representing the Cause of Hispanic Americans), the denomination s Hispanic caucus. She also was endorsed by the Nebraska Annual (regional) Conference delegation. Before leading UMCOR, she previously was the director of missional excellence for the Texas Annual (regional) Conference. In that role, she initiated a partnership with the Côte d Ivoire Annual Conference. She also has previously served as executive associate pastor of Memorial Drive United Methodist Church in Houston and associate pastor of Foundry United Methodist Church in Houston. She is a graduate of Southern Methodist University s Perkins School of Theology. Within the United States, local United Methodist churches are organized into increasingly larger groups: numerous districts, dozens of annual conferences and five jurisdictions (regions). Ten active bishops now lead the annual conferences that form the South Central Jurisdiction. Typically, a bishop will serve in a specific annual conference for eight years. The United Methodist Book of Discipline, the denomination s law book, directs each bishop to guard the faith, order, liturgy, doctrine, and discipline of the Church and to lead all persons entrusted to their oversight in worship, in the celebration of the sacraments, and in their mission of witness and service in the world. Bishops also are to be prophetic voices and courageous leaders in the cause of justice for all people. The states represented in this jurisdiction are: Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. 3 Bruce & Lynne Richardson Be a Part of Children s Music & Arts We have a wonderful children s music program at Broadmoor United Methodist Church. We offer 4 children s choir and 2 children s handbell/ choir chime choirs. Children sing in worship services, present musicals with choreography and drama, and have fun social events (bowling, skating, etc.). The older children also travel out of state in the spring on a mission trip and more! Won t you join us? All rehearsals begin on Sunday, September 9. For more information, contact Dr. Dona Lusted ( or dlusted@ broadmoormethodist.org) or check out our web site at Come play your favorite domino games, board games, or learn a new game at the Third Thursday Fun and Games Night on August 16 from 6:30 9:00 p.m. in Room 101 of the Adult Building. All ages are welcome. Coffee, punch, and soft drinks are provided by Prime O Life. Bring a friend and a snack to share if you wish. Call Jerry or Margerite Hammons at if you would like more information or a ride to the church. Toiletry Items for Southeast Ministries Robson & Krystal Pollitz Southeast Ministries is in need of personal items: bath soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, deodorant, and lotions. Travel sizes are good for our homeless clients and regular sizes are good for the families we serve. Please put your items in our red baskets and they will be taken to Southeast Ministries. Thank you for helping us meet the needs of our clients! Centering Prayer On-Going The centering prayer group organized back in the fall continues to meet on Thursday evenings at 6:00 in the Prayer Room. The small group meets for a time of silent, centering prayer that begins with a scripture reading and ends with a spoken prayer. This is a time for our own personal relationship with God, allowing ourselves the opportunity to rest in God s love. For more information on the discipline of centering prayer, visit and click on Centering Prayer. If you would like to find out more about this Broadmoor ministry, contact Rev. Shannon Sandifer at ssandifer@broadmoormethodist.org.
I Am the Clay Retreat Well Received A rainy Saturday did not prevent participants from coming out for the I Am the Clay retreat with potter and spiritual director Jane Knight held on July 21. Twenty-two participants listened and watched as Jane demonstrated on her potter s wheel the metaphor that we are the clay and God is the potter. With God s hands constantly on us, we are centered, opened, molded, shaped, trimmed, and used as we grow closer to our Creator and also help build God s kingdom. The retreat included the opportunity for participants to hand mold a lump of clay into an image of their choosing that spoke of their own spirituality. A portion of the retreat centered on the masks we wear, what we try to hide, and our need and desire to be authentic before God and others. The retreat was sponsored by the small group and spiritual formation ministries at Broadmoor. Watch for more retreat and small group opportunities in the near future! Pat Powers Shares His Experience Dave Ramsey s Financial Peace University Enrolling for Fall 2012 Financial Peace University will return to Broadmoor United Methodist Church this fall. It will be a brand new 9-week curriculum, and will be held on Monday nights starting on September 10. Cost will be $89/family, and includes all materials for the course. Contact Robert Manes at the church office for more details (rmanes@ broadmoormethodist.org, ). Register at by August 27. We are developing a ministry to the children who come to Open Air Ministries (an outdoor worship service downtown with many homeless in attendance) with their parents on Sundays. BUMC helps with Open Air Ministries on the 2nd Sunday of each month. During the service, we have a Sunday School lesson and craft activity for the children. If you have a heart for children, please come out and observe with us one week, and see if God leads you to want to help with the lessons in the future! Call Shanan Schatzle, , to sign up for an observation, or with questions. Earlier this summer, Pat Powers offered to teach any Sunday school class that was in need of a teacher for one class or a short-term study. The response from classes was surprising. Read the comments from Pat below. When you offered your teaching experience to classes, what were your expectations? My offer and expectations were based upon my assumption that we had some teachers who could use some time off. By time off I was thinking that I would step in and teach a Sunday here and a Sunday there when the teacher was under the weather, on vacation, etc. very similar to a substitute teacher in school. What did you discover as you began to hear from classes that were interested? I discovered three things. First, my hypothesis that other teachers could use a break was right on target. Within a day or two of the announcement that I was available to substitute teach, I had several requests. It was the nature of the requests where I made my second discovery. The need was not for a substitute teacher, but for someone who could step in and teach while the current teacher or teachers took an extended leave of absence. Currently I am committed through March of Third, all of our Sunday school classes have excellent cooks who prepare tasty treats for their class. What are your thoughts about how we might develop a resource of teachers for our Sunday school classes? I know in my class we now share the teaching among several classmates all of whom do an excellent job and all of whom have different styles of teaching. I suspect that other classes are similar. I know there is a need for teachers. I believe we should create a directory of those volunteering that lists contact information, topics/books/books of the Bible each is prepared to teach, and the length of time needed for each topic. If you have the gift of teaching, consider sharing your God-given gift with others. You can become part of the Teaching Directory by contacting Charlotte Napper at or cnapper@broadmoormethodist.org.
Life Writing meets on the 3rd Monday of each month at 9:30 a.m. in Room 103 of the Adult Building. What do we do? We mine memories. This may surprise you, but sometimes we find it easier to remember past events and memorable times in our lives than to remember where we left our keys or our cell phone an hour ago. We remember and we write. Then we come together to share our memories with each other. Later we share them with family and other friends. At our meetings we sit around the table, usually with a cup of coffee. Each person reads, and there is often a brief discussion about what in the reading jogged our memories. Come join our group sharing experience. We welcome newcomers and visitors. Call Francile Ehricht for more information at Beyond the Broken Heart is an eight-week grief support and ministry program for anyone who is grieving the loss of a loved one. How do you understand grief when your heart is broken by the death of a loved one? To survive and live forward, you must find answers. Author Julie Yarbrough chronicles her personal experience of loss. Her deep love of scripture and years of leading grief support groups combined with personal loss has yielded an authentic and personal journey through grief. If you have experienced the loss of loved one and are looking specific strategies to guide you back to fullness of life, Beyond the Broken Heart explains both the spiritual and practical issues of grief. You will learn how your experience of grief can be transformed so that your life becomes a life lived in gratitude for the steadfast love and faithfulness of God and a life that honors the memory of your loved one. This group will begin to meet in the month of September. The regular day and time to meet will be decided by the group. If you are interested in participating or need more information, please contact Charlotte Napper at or cnapper@broadmoormethodist.org. Some groups are re-starting after a summer break and many will be preparing music during the Fall for the big bowl game Christmas! Our fans here at church are very supportive and by offering your talents to God and his Kingdom, we all win. Go to or call coach David at extension 233 to get on a team now! Summer Donations for Homeless Through Open Air Ministries For the remainder of summer and through September, we can use packs of new T-shirts, underwear, white socks, and gently used hot weather clothing, as well as bug spray and deodorant. You can bring donations to the Connection Café on Sunday mornings or the church office during the week. Children s Sunday School Teachers Alive in Christ Love Beyond Measure! Contact Cheri Coats in Children s Ministries at The Serendipity Sunday School class has manna bags available for any church members who would like to have them to give away to those in need. A manna bag is intended to provide sustenance for one person for one day. We have also included a New Testament Bible in order to share the Gospel, and hygiene items such as soap, shampoo, and toothpaste. Keep a couple of manna bags in your car, and when you see someone with a will work for food sign, hand them the manna bag. Bags are available in the Serendipity classroom (Adult Building, Room 202) between 9:30 9:45 a.m., and in the Connection Café from 8:00 a.m. 12:15 p.m. on Sundays.
Blood Drive - August 12 The next BUMC Blood Donation Sunday is scheduled for August 12 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Room 101 of the Adult Building. Sign-up tables for the next blood drive will be set up around the campus on August 5, but advance registration is not required to donate. In addition to blood donations, the Trima unit will also be available for those wishing to donate red blood cells or platelets. The time required for using the Trima unit is only minutes. With 96 units already donated this year, BUMC is right at its goal of 200 units set by Our Lady of the Lake Blood Center for donations this year. With a little extra effort we will exceed this goal. We may never know when someone close to us will need blood, but it is nice to know we have done our part to help. Be sure to eat a healthy breakfast before you donate. Give the gift of life give blood. Walk to Emmaus spiritual enrichment weekends are available to anyone who desires to strengthen their Christian journey and discipleship. The next Walk to Emmaus weekend for men will be held September and for women will be held September 27 30, both held on the campus of Broadmoor UMC. Those who are interested may submit an application now. The local Emmaus group web site is where you can find pilgrim applications and related information. You may also contact Danny Brouillette ( ) or Suzie Hill ( ). Kids ages pre-k to 5th grade are invited to experience 11:00 a.m. worship through FUN activities and innovative Bible lessons, combining music, drama, games, and hands-on activities. So join us Sunday mornings, upstairs in the Children s Building as we learn about God in a casual and fun atmosphere! English as Second Language Classes (ESL) Begin Monday, August 13 Our fall ESL classes will begin on Monday, August 13 at 7:00 p.m. Students may register when they come to class. Classes are held on Monday and Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in Room 107 of the Adult Building. Our classes are free. Students spend 45 minutes on the computer with the Rosetta Stone software and 45 minutes in classroom instruction. Our volunteer teachers provide a supportive and fun environment for our students. If you know someone interested in our classes, you may pick up a flyer (Spanish or English) in the Connection Café or at the receptionist s desk in the church office. If you are interested in teaching or would like more information, please contact Jenola Duke at or jenoladuke@cox.net. Make a Difference in the Life and Success of a Broadmoor Elementary Student Serve as a Reading Friend. Reading on grade level is the basic skill that helps a child learn in all subjects. You can help a 1st, 2nd or 3rd grade child improve his/her reading skills by reading with the child for 30 minutes once a week or every other week. You will help the student improve his/her vocabulary and self-confidence, as you broaden the child s horizons and become a special friend. A 1 1/2 hour training and a background check is required for all new Reading Friends. Trainings at BUMC will be Wednesday, August 22 from 3:30-5:00 p.m. and Thursday, August 30 from 9:00-10:30 a.m. Watch The Spotlight for locations. Serve as a Math Friend. Mastering math skills requires extra practice. Help a 1st, 2nd or 3rd grade child improve his/her math skills by working with the child minutes weekly. Training and a kit of hands-on materials will be supplied. A background check is required for all new Math Friends. Help Kindergarten students learn lunchroom skills. Work with a team of volunteers to guide Kindergarten students in learning how to pick up their lunches, insert straws into plastic milk pouches, and return their plates to the disposal area. It s harder than it looks for young students with little hands to master all of this. Each day for 3 weeks we will have a team of volunteers helping the children learn these new skills. You may choose the days you wish to volunteer. Dates are school days Thursday, August 16 - Wednesday, September 5 excluding Labor Day. For more information on any of these serving opportunities, contact Jenola Duke at or jenoladuke@cox.net.
