Chef s Night out page 7 for a quick peek of what s to come on Sunday, July 28, 10:15! This fall Transfiguration is starting a great adventure of reading the stories of the Bible in chronological order. We will do this over a period of 31 weeks beginning on September 22 and ending on June 1, 2014, the Sunday before Pentecost. Of course there are more than 31 weeks in that time period, but we want to insure that our special Sundays will be lectionary based as they always have been. The books we will be using are based on The Story and are age appropriate. There are books for 4 age groups. The Adult book is chronological story of the bible from the NIV (New International Version) translation. All the references have been removed so that it reads like a novel! The Teen book has age based references. The younger children will have both a book and a set of cards. If you would prefer an ebook, they are available online at sites such as Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Having a book is important and we want everyone to be able to have one. With that in mind the Vestry authorized $1,000 to be used for the purchase of books. With careful shopping we were able to purchase books for all ages and come in a bit under budget. Books will be available on September 8 and 15. Donations for the books will be gratefully accepted. Food for the Poor A Call for Help Youth Group Dates Daily Bible Readings Meet the Doctors & 11 Needed: TEACHERS for our Young People We have a marvelous core of teachers who work diligently to form our young people in the Christian life. But we could use some more to help distribute the work. If you are currently a teacher or youth leader here at Transfiguration working with our young people, or if you are willing to step up in faith to help this wonderful cadre of dedicated Christian teachers, please meet with Mother Meg on Thursday August 1st at 7 PM in the Library. This could be the most important invitation of your life and in the life of the young people of our church. Please pray about this, and then come.

5 The Story Wednesday, July 03, 2013 In my early years as a parish priest, a woman from the congregation approached me. I ve been an Episcopalian all my life, she said, and I don t know the first thing about the Bible. Although she had heard Bible stories and teachings every Sunday in church, she had no structure in her mind to help her make sense of the Bible and how the stories fit into a coherent narrative or worldview. So we began a weekly class for those who thought they knew nothing about the Bible. My goal was to provide them what a seminary education had given me the internal scaffolding on which to place particular biblical stories or teachings so that they could engage them in a meaningful way, and make sense of passages that make no sense outside of that larger context. Starting in September, The Episcopal Diocese of Washington will offer a similar Bible study as this year s People of the Way offering. Our goal is to give each one who reads along with us a comprehensive overview of the Biblical story, the internal structure necessary to fruitfully engage our sacred texts. Several congregations have committed to using the same materials as part of their Christian Education, in a pilot congregation-based Bible study. Here s why we re doing this: While Episcopalians are among the most highly educated Christians in our country, we are also among the most biblically illiterate. We are known for our disdain of those who interpret the Bible as the unerring Word of God, and, perhaps as an unfortunate side-product of that disdain, we cut ourselves off from our rich spiritual legacy. Very few of us engage Scripture on a daily basis, which is tragic, for that simple spiritual practice is the most consistent indicator among those who profess a vibrant, personally significant and transformative relationship with God. We ll be using a Bible curriculum called The Story which divides the Bible into 31 segments. Those who participate can purchase the materials or simply follow along in your own Bibles each week. The Story curriculum has children and youth components, and it is also available in Spanish. While the creators of The Story may have a different theological perspective than many Episcopalians, their teaching methods are sound. Count on us to provide Episcopal commentary. 5 What s the Difference? Lloyd Brooks handed me a magazine the other day from a company with which he is involved called Youngevity (nice play on words). I ll let Lloyd tell you about his involvement in this company, but there was one page that I thought especially interesting. It outlined the differences between accidental growth and intentional growth. It seems to me that the outline applies to both personal and organizational structures, so I thought I d share it with you. Meg+ Accidental Growth Plans to start tomorrow Waits for growth to come Learns only from mistakes Depends on good luck Quits early and often Falls into bad habits Talks big Plays it safe Thinks like a victim Relies on talent Stops learning after graduation Intentional Growth Insists on starting today Takes complete responsibility to grow Often learns before mistakes Relies on hard work Perseveres long and hard Fights for good habits Follows through Takes risks Thinks like a learner Relies on character Never stops growing

6 6 Sunday, November 10, 2013, 5:00 till 9:00 (plus set up and clean up) Chef s Night will be an All-In-One-Place event where a Table Chef will cook the main course and guests will bring hors d oeuvres or dessert and help set up and clean up. Here's the new plan: 1. The church has eight round tables; each table will sit 8 people, so we have the capacity to accommodate a total of 64 people, if we have 8 people sign up to be the Table Chef. 2. Each table will have a Table Chef who will provide and cook a main course. The other people at that table will be responsible for their table to: set up, clean up, wine if desired, an hors d'oeuvres or a dessert/after dinner drinks. We will use church coffee and tea. 3. Hors D oeuvres and desserts will be set up in the community building and the main dinner will be in the parish hall - so our "Progression" will only be between the two buildings and will allow space for the Chefs to prepare last minute heating. 4. All food will be prepared at home and brought to the church in containers that will keep the food hot/cold, as required. Chef Rules: 1. Each Chef will make a main course for 8 people. 2. Chefs will prepare all food at their home and bring it to the church in containers that will keep the food warm, as the stove/oven will not be able to accommodate all of Chefs. 3. Each Chef will create a menu that will be available for posting in the Parish Hall by Sunday September 29th. 4. There are no other rules - create a yummy, progressive sensation. Participant rules: 1. Participation is limited by space and the number of available Table Chefs. The Table Chef and his/her spouse will have 2 of the 8 table seats. After that it will be the first 48 people who sign up on the OFFI- CIAL signup sheet that will be posted after the 8:00 service on Sunday October 6th. 2. Every participant participates in some way; there is no free ride (see # 2 in the plan above). Sign up Plan: 1. Table Chef 2. Table Chef spouse 3. Hors d'ouvres & Set up 4. Hors d'ouvres & Set up 5. Dessert & Clean up 6. Dessert & Clean up 7. Red Wine & Set up 8. White Wine & Clean Up

10 Meet Dr. Anna Maria Izquiedo-Porrera 10 WHO WE ARE At Care for Your Health, we believe that primary care is built on a long-term providerpatient relationship that fosters trust and collaboration. This relationship engenders the optimal plan to improve the health and well-being of our patients, their families and the communities in which we live and work. Care for Your Health is a Maryland-based non-profit created to improve the health of our neighbors. We deploy primary care Ideal Medical Practices in neighborhoods where such care is sorely needed and build sustainable relationships with our patients and our community. Transfiguration hosts one of the Care for Your Health clinics staffed by Dr. Anna Maria Izquiedo-Porrera. Dr. Anna Maria Izquierdo-Porrera THE MISSION OF CARE FOR YOUR HEALTH To provide high-quality, patient-centered, primary healthcare for the underserved through a low-overhead, high-efficiency, economically sustainable Micropractice model that is centered around patient experience. C4YH practices are built around three key guiding tenets: small practice size, high technology utilization, and engagement of the communities where C4YH practiced. These principles enhance the relationship between the patient and our providers. Small practice: C4YH practices are staffed with a single provider and a support person so that when you sign up for an appointment with them, you can rest assured that you will see the same provider every time. This model also helps keep costs of delivering care low so that they can extend their services to patients that might not have any form of insurance. High technology: C4YH knows that you don't just get sick between 8am to 5pm during weekdays. They enable convenient communication and engagement with their providers through varied technological means , text messaging, electronic health records and patient health records. Community Engagement: Care for Your Health fosters the health of their patients and the health of their communities through a variety of outreach programs. We are very proud to have Dr. Anna Maria and Care For Your Health resident at Transfiguration. She and her organization do much good work here in our community.
