3 St. John Council Minutes 04/10/2018 MEETING CALLED TO ORDER at 5:15 pm by President Larry Bauman Mel Miller opened the meeting with prayer. Present: Larry Bauman, President Mel Miller Gloria Leadbetter Wanda Weisz Alan Ross Darlene Jones Melisa Crouch Lee Moon Beverly Horyza Absent: Pastor Bonita Knox Phil Hogan Quorum declared. MOTION to excuse absent members by Lee Moon. SECOND by Bev Horyza. MOTION CARRIED. AGENDA. A. Approval of minutes for As there were no corrections, MOTION to accept minutes by Alan Ross. SECOND by Wanda Weisz. MOTION CARRIED. B. Financial and Savings Reports given by Gloria Leadbetter, Treasurer. Currently, we are at 91 % of pledges. No major change in savings account. Children's Church account now is closed with balance moved to general checking. Discussion regarding our Memorial Fund was led by Larry Bauman. It was noted that Memorial Fund monies were given following the Bill Carpenter funeral. Larry will investigate how these funds may be spent if no designations are on the Memo lines of checks. REPORT PLACED INTO THE RECORD. C. Pastor's Report submitted in written form. It will be posted outside her office. D. Committee Reports 1. Worship by Melisa. She has a concern about new comers and our Communion practices. Suggested that Pastor review our beliefs and practices during announcements before worship with an emphasis on invitation to join in. Melisa reminded us that we have a fifth Sunday this month, meaning the service will be a MIDI service with prerecorded music. Kevin Knox will be responsible for downloading everything we will need for this service. 2. Congregational Life by Darlene. About 45 people were served at Easter Breakfast. Discussion followed about number of casseroles to plan for next year because there was too much food this year. All agreed this year's menu was ideal. 3. Spiritual Growth by Pastor. Due to her participation in a pastors' retreat, no report was given. 4. Outreach by Mel. Wanda reported that the packing of donated goods from our Lenten collection will take place following worship. 5. Property by Alan. The new screens for the sanctuary will be installed in May if that doesn't interfere with the painting of the church exterior. He will work around Samuelson Painting if need be. Dan Moline will handle the weeds. Larry reported 3

4 that gravel for the parking lot will run $ MOTION by Gloria to move funds from Contingency Fund to Property Fund to pay for gravel. SECOND by Lee. MOTION CARRIED. E. New Business 1. The next Blood Drive is scheduled for May 15 at the church. Diana Hague will provide details before this date. 2. The Girl Scouts have requested using our facilities for their meetings. During discussion, all agreed to allow them to do so with guidelines about restricted access to the upper fellowship hall, the basement, and the sanctuary. We agreed that tying the sanctuary doors shut like we do for Farmers' Market and roping off access to the stairwells would encourage the Scouts to use the main floor bathrooms and fellowship hall. We will not charge them for the use. MOTION to extend invitation to the Girl Scouts to use our facilities at no charge to them by Lee. SECOND by Melissa. MOTION CARRIED. 3. Lower bathroom issues. Larry led discussion on continued sewer maintenance vs. sewer replacement. Questions about our sewer line connecting to property owner's line to the south and whether this sewer is a city maintained line came up. Because Larry used to work for the city, he will continue to investigate the problem and possible solutions. The last camera and cleaning showed a dip in our line but was not as thorough as hoped. 4. There will be a VBS meeting at the Methodist Church April 18 at 7 pm. We are encouraged to offer our help. 5. Insurance for both Farmers' Market and the Presbyterian Church. We will ask the Farmers' Market to provide us with proof of insurance before the season begins. We are not certain when the Presbyterians plan to join us and will address their insurance when the time comes. 6. Moving money from our Contingency Fund to the Property Fund. Discussion followed. For now Klean Pipe LLC from Lander has been engaged to camera and clean our line for $ MOTION to accept this amount by Mel. SECOND by Lee. MOTION CARRIED. 7. Audit Committee. Gloria explained the duties of members and the process. Lee Moon will chair this committee, and all agree Dan Moline and others should be solicited to help. F. Old Business 1. Moving money from our Contingency Fund to the Property Fund. MOTION by Bev to move $2, from Contingency to Property to cover the costs of the lower bathroom mold abatement. SECOND by Mel. MOTION CARRIED. 2. Exterior painting of church. Larry met with Garland Samuelson regarding the amount of his bid. It was confirmed that the bid for $6, is correct. 5 From the Pastor May 2018 As Advent and Christmas give us time to learn and contemplate God the creator, Lent and Easter are to God in Jesus Christ. The season of Pentecost teaches us about God the Holy Spirit. Pentecost Sunday is May 20. It is the fiftieth day of Easter and Easter is celebrated for seven weeks. To remember this time we have lit the Paschal candle from the Vigil of Easter through Pentecost Sunday. This candle is our reminder of God s creation, God s Son our Savior; that we are Easter people of the resurrection, and always we remember the gift of the Holy Spirit to guide and direct us in our Disciple Life. I invite you to celebrate Pentecost Sunday with us. Our church year is celebrated especially at Christmas, Easter, and Pentecost. And Pentecost Sunday is graduation for Riverton, High School. So far we know that Emily Jones, DeLaney Dronek and Kaiden Bailey (Darlene Carpenter s grandson) will graduate here. I am also inviting us to celebrate other graduates that we want to pray for and include. Pentecost is a good time to remember what Luther wrote for the Third Article of the Apostles Creed: The Third Article: On Being Made Holy I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. What is this? or What does this mean? I believe that by my own understanding or strength I cannot believe in Jesus Christ my Lord or come to him, but instead the Holy Spirit has called me through the gospel, enlightened me with his gifts, made me holy and kept me in the true faith, just as he calls, gathers, enlightens, and makes holy the whole Christian church on earth and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one common, true faith. Daily in this Christian church the Holy Spirit abundantly forgives all sins mine and those of all believers. On the last day the Holy Spirit will raise me and all the dead and will give to me and all believers in Christ eternal life. This is most certainly true. On Being Made Holy. These are words to live by and to constantly be in God s Word, to learn and grow faithfully as God s resurrected people; for abiding life together in Christ. To God be the glory, Pastor Bonita 5

We will meet at Riverton United Methodist Church. VBS will be Monday, June 18 through Thursday, June 21. VBS is 8:30 am to Noon. Enrollment is limited. VBS is being planned for children entering kindergarten through Fifth grade. This is an important outreach for our Disciplelife in Christ. The date for our blood drive is going to be May 15 th 2018 here at St. John. Be sure to connect with Diana to assist in this important event. 8

9 A reminder to us all: The Farmer s Market begins Wednesday, May 16, 5:00 to 7:00 pm. We are so blessed to be able to host this community event. You may talk to Kim if you have a question. Did You Ever Wonder Why We Do What We Do in Worship? May 10, 17, 24, and 31. Gather at 5:30 pm for a light snack and discussion around the why of worship. In worship, for May, I would like to start talking about how our worship is Biblically based. For instance when we greet one another with The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. This comes from 2 Corinthians 13:14. Our response: And also with you has its roots in Ruth 2:4 The Lord bless you. The Latin is: And with your spirit. May 13 is Mother s Day and the day we will pray for mothers and for our graduates near and far. May 20 is graduation day for Riverton.
