From Skibbereen to Androscoggin On the Trail of the Driscolls of Garrane, Caheragh Preface to the Sixth Edition Much has happened since the last update in early 2017: A death record has been found for Margaret Driscoll née Looney in A number of distant relatives sharing Driscoll ancestry have been identified on Ancestry.com, which has helped firm up some research. I d like to thank "jillybean", "danarobert1", and "StKeegan524" for their additional contributions! Cutting edge advanced Y DNA testing is placing our Driscolls in the context of west Cork Driscolls at large. There is now a section towards the end of this book called DNA Research with more detail. 4 Preface to the Fifth Edition The fourth edition of this research book was never fully completed due to time commitments elsewhere over 2014 through However, that preface is worth a read before continuing here took some leaps forward in Maine genealogy thanks to cemetery records that went online at Find A Grave. By the end of 2015, enough circumstantial evidence was put together to conclude that the Patrick Driscoll who married Catherine Sullivan in 1841 and immigrated to Maine in 1848 was NOT the son of Daniel Driscoll and Margaret Looney, whose family is the focus of this paper. So the bad news is that it is back to Square One in learning the fate of Patrick, born in The good news is that the Patrick who has been researched may have been from a related Driscoll family. These two families crossed paths with each other on both sides of the Atlantic. There were other research developments too. Thanks to Skibbereen Heritage, there is now more data on the children of John Driscoll, the youngest child. He had two wives and many children. Some of his children may have been tracked into the U.S. We know one went to England. During a 2016 trip to Ireland I visited a direct descendant of John Driscoll who has now tested for the Driscoll genetic study. John is known as Sean by his descendants in Ireland and John s son Patrick is known as Patsy Sean. I also met a descendant of Sean s sister Margaret, a descendant of his sister Johanna, and had a brief phone conversation with a descendant of his sister Mary. I owe thanks to my relatives Joe Collins, Pat McCarthy, and Dano and Nuala O Driscoll for much additional information, which I have yet to fully digest! Susan J. Barretta February 2017 sbarr10@earthlink.net 4

Preface to the Fourth Edition Genealogy is a messy pastime that is never finished. People who don t belong there get glued on to family trees, and others who should be there are omitted. When a new source of information turns up, it often brings with it another dozen questions. One of the questions burning in my head while researching my Driscoll family has been, WHY did Florence Driscoll go to Androscoggin County, Maine, USA? Did he know somebody already there? I think I can answer a big MAYBE in my 2015 update about the descendants of Dan Driscoll and Margaret Looney of Garrane, Cork, Ireland. Research took a major leap forward in 2014 when some cemetery records went online at Find A Grave. My great-great-grandmother Ellen Driscoll s brothers and some members of their families are buried or memorialized at Mount Hope Cemetery in Lewiston. Mount Hope records were transcribed by the Franco-American Genealogical Society and are published online by Lewiston Public Library. The discovery of these cemetery records led me to Patrick Driscoll (bap. 1820) and his wife Catherine Sullivan, who did not die young. In earlier research, I speculated that perhaps Catherine died after childbirth, and Patrick remarried a Mary Regan shortly after. Patrick did not remarry. Rather, he and Catherine lost their infant son Daniel (b. Dec-1841) when he was only 18 months old. This was memorialized on the family gravestone. A major question remains - who was the Patrick Driscoll who remained in Ireland and was a witness to family events as evidenced by church records? He was probably a close relative. For that matter, I still have not conclusively proven that the Patrick who married Catherine Sullivan and came to Lewiston was the brother, or that it was the brother who remained in Ireland. I am also trying to follow up on the families of Patrick s brothers. I might have a lead on Florence s eponymously named son, who was possibly boarded at a boys school in Portland. I am desperately trying to determine whether that old school has records available for public access. Another major record discovery this year was the Google Newspaper Archives. In my files are dozens of story links from the Lewiston newspapers about Driscolls, all of which I hope to transcribe as part of wider effort for the Driscoll DNA Project. That large scale effort is put on a backburner for now. For now I have been left with a link to one tantalizing story from 1901 about a Mary Driscoll from Newbury Street, Auburn (the street where Florence Driscoll and Margaret Minihane lived) and how in a fit of madness she wandered over to Park Street in Lewiston (where Patrick s and Catherine s children probably lived). It is the only item I have found so far potentially linking Auburn to Lewiston Driscolls. Still another news clipping from 1893 mentions a Miss Katie Driscoll off to visit her uncle, the Honorable Timothy Driscoll, in Chicago. Was Katie Driscoll Patrick s daughter, and does this mean there was another brother Timothy for whom I have no other records? Yet another major record discovery this year was the old Lewiston-Auburn city directories. In the 1871 directory there were no Driscolls listed in Auburn yet, but a few, including Patrick, were listed in Lewiston. In 1891 Florence was listed on Newbury Street, Auburn, where, curiously, he had Driscoll neighbors in adjoining houses. There was no question about them being clumped together. Could those other Driscolls on Newbury Street have been relatives, albeit more distant ones? My chief problem now is that I won t be able to proceed with Driscoll research in Androscoggin County without researching ALL the Driscoll families there. At some point I intend to do this, and transcribing 5

the Google news archive clippings will be part of that research. But this can only be done *after* I complete some outstanding Driscoll project related work in So this will be my last research update for a few years. DNA testing has been a disappointment so far. The greatest difficulty is in getting relatives through my granddad s family to test. Only a tiny fraction of all the potential DNA testers have ever done so, and in the existing DNA databases there is insufficient data highlighting a clear match to any Driscolls. The chances of a distant Driscoll relative having tested and matching me or my uncle are almost zero. Autosomal DNA analysis is beyond comprehension for many, because it requires paying attention to chromosomes, an entirely different sort of genealogy record. Our family tree structure is such that our Driscoll DNA is neither on our direct maternal lineage, nor on our direct paternal lineage, but rather, lost in the autosomal quagmire of chromosomes 1 through 22. Some autosomal family lines by the good fortune of an X inheritance pattern might leave some of their DNA legacy on the more traceable X chromosome (#23) not so in my case. Another difficulty is in scraping up descendants of the people described herein, let alone persuading them to also test. I don t have the personal connections to establish relationships in remote places, and traveling comes with conditions I am not able to meet. Should I ever have the fortune of encountering a man named Driscoll who is a direct paternal descendant of Dan Driscoll through one of his sons, or a woman who is a direct maternal descendant of Margaret Looney through one of her Driscoll daughters, I will have to bite my tongue to keep any mention of DNA testing from shooting out of my mouth immediately after hello. The Androscoggin records, though, have shown a dismal survival rate for the sons of Patrick, Florence and James. Pat lost both sons as toddlers; it is not yet clear if the sons of James and Florence had time to establish families (and produce sons) before they expired. They lost so many children at young ages (some in childhood, in teens, and barely into adulthood) that I have started to wonder if the thought had ever crossed the minds of these ancestors that they might have been better off remaining in Ireland. Since the youngest brother John, who remained in Ireland, had so many sons, my hope may lie in tracing John s children. Research from 2014 through early 2015 has been added to this document. The Driscoll family timeline has been majorly revised and expanded. Additional U.S. records have been pulled in for Patrick, Florence, and James, including Port of Boston ship lists, naturalization, census, and city directory records. Other than listing the existing records for the sisters and youngest brother who remained in Ireland, there have been no new discoveries of the siblings back home. The format of the document itself has changed. For each of the children in this family, text is ordered chronologically and a shift to a more narrative style is in progress. Even the typeface has changed from a dry, clinical one to a more humanist one. I hope the style changes make this easier to read. I still have no idea how Driscoll Island in the Androscoggin River got its name. 6

Preface to the Third Edition This is my 2014 update about the descendants of Dan Driscoll and Margaret Looney of Garrane, Caheragh parish, County Cork. The 2013 edition reported that sons Florence and James emigrated to the United States and settled in Androscoggin, Maine. There was some data on sons Pat and John but their final outcomes were unknown. There was no information at all about son Dan (Junior). Since my 2013 research, there has been tremendous progress in finding the youngest son John. I managed to trace John s descendants into the early 20 th century and am now on the lookout for his descendants in or near Skibbereen Town. In addition, I have done extensive research on the oldest known son Pat. The details of that research in U.S. records are pulled into an Appendix. The U.S. records just don t mesh with the Irish timeline very well. Characteristically, Pat was just about always recorded as such, and almost never as Patrick or as an abbreviation thereof. The only exceptions I have found were in Latin records in Skibbereen R.C. Parish, and an abbreviation Pk on what I think is the baptism record of his first child, in Aughadown R.C. Parish. I spent some months slogging through U.S. records, but much to my surprise, literally while sitting down and updating this book for 2014, I discovered a lead right under my nose suggesting that Pat was widowed a second time, stayed in west Cork and married a third time. In addition, Pat may have led me to Dan Junior, though that remains speculative. As I mentioned in the preface to the previous addition, this family seemed to do things their own way. While not strictly following the tradition of naming oldest sons after their grandfathers, they did nevertheless name sons Dan and daughters Margaret. They seem to have been a rather hardy bunch. If all my research is correct, only one of Dan Driscoll s and Margaret Looney s childen died while very young. The rest of them struggled through the famine and made it out the other side in Ireland no less. Pat and Florence are not in land valuation records in any obvious way. That, plus the decisions to not to record residences in church records at the times I needed them, have made Pat and Florence extremely difficult to spot. They may have been under the radar but they were there in the area. Dan Junior s outcome is still not clear. Another curiosity about this family is that twice, siblings married on the same day. Had I known this three years ago, a good research tip for me would have been: When a marriage record for one of these Driscoll children is found, search with that same date for other Driscolls in the area also getting married. This document updates my research findings through 2013 and early Besides adding more detail about the grandchildren, I have added a family timeline at the end of the introduction, before the details about the children. The timeline summarizes this entire document. 7

Preface to the Second Edition In the first version of this document about the descendants of Dan Driscoll and Margaret Looney of Garrane, Caheragh parish, County Cork, that I published in 2012, I felt certain about the outcomes of their daughters Mary, Ellen (my great-great-grandmother), Margaret, and Johanna. I left off with a question asking what had happened to their sons Pat, Florence, Dan, James and Tim. The Driscoll men in Garrane disappeared about I have since discovered more about the sons. Florence and James emigrated with their families to Androscoggin County, Maine, USA. In addition, Tim turned out to be a John. I have also dug up data on a Pat Driscoll, who was in the right place at about the right time. He seems a little too young to have been my great-great-grand-uncle if I am correct about a marriage in 1841, but I will claim him as such until new evidence points me in another direction. These four boys were situated in or near Garrane, at least through the mid-19 th century. This family apparently liked to do things their own way and disregard naming order traditions, though they did faithfully use family names. If my data is correct, three of the boys did not name their oldest sons after their father, although they did eventually have sons named Dan. Maybe Dan Senior s sons decided that there were too many Dan Driscolls running around Skibbereen. Maybe there was a superstition involved and they thought it would be bad luck. I hope somebody can enlighten me on this. Pat, Florence, James, and John each named their oldest daughter Margaret. On the other hand, not one of the daughters named their oldest daughter Margaret, after their mother. If my data on Pat is correct, he named his oldest son Daniel. Another characteristic of this family is that the sons and daughters, with the possible exception of Pat, did not appear to maintain close ties with their numerous Regan baptism sponsors. I would have expected a Regan or two to pop up when they had their own children baptized, but that is generally not the case. So I don t know if the Regans were relatives or just good neighbors. This document updates my findings through 2012 and early

Introduction Garrane is a townland in the southwest part of Caheragh civil parish, at one time separated into Garrane Beg and Garrane More. Garrane Beg was the home of my ancestral Driscolls, for whom records exist from 1820 through the 1950 s. Like a good mystery book that I can t put down, I have been hunting for the kin of Daniel Driscoll and Margaret Looney and for their descendants. Starting from the 12 o clock position and moving clockwise, the townlands directly adjacent to Garrane are Coolboy, Dromcorragh, Milleenahorna, Coolbane, Cooranuller, and Cappagh Beg, the last one within the boundaries of Skull civil parish. Further out lie Glanaphuca, Ballyourane, Bawnishal, Kilnagospagh (Caheragh); Skeagh (Abbeystrowry); Lissaclarig East (Kilcoe); Cappagh More, Scarteenakillin (Skull); and Lognagappul (Caheragh). 10 Introduction: Church Records of Dan Driscoll and Margaret Looney No marriage record has ever been found for this couple. The baptism dates of their known children are listed below. The church records are shown later in this document. Some are very difficult to read and some have not been indexed correctly in the online church records. Child Date Godparents Pat 31 Mar 1820 Michael Driscoll, Norry Murphy Ellen 21 Aug 1822 Darby Regan, Mary Driscoll Florence 07 Apr 1825 Denis O Driscoll, Mary Looney Mary 11 Feb 1827 Tim Donovan, Johanna Driscoll Daniel 15 Feb 1829 Curly Lynch, Johanna Regan Ellen * 01 Mar 1830 Darby Looney, Margaret Regan Margaret 13 Feb 1833 Tom Lynch, Margaret Murphy James 26 Jul 1835 Curly Regan, Eleanor Minihane Johanna 18 Mar 1838 James Looney, Ellen Regan John ** 17 Jul 1842 John Regan, Norry Regan * Ellen was my great-great-grandmother. ** In the 2012 version of this publication, this record was marked Timothy. When I first had Skibbereen Heritage research my Driscolls, the child born in 1838 was called Tim, which was an error, and the child born in 1842 was called John, which may have been correct. The online church records index the 1838 child as Jane (closer) and the 1842 child as Tim (an error). Even now, I am not certain the records of Johanna and John are marked correctly. Driscolls Among the baptism sponsors, Michael, Mary, Denis, Johanna, and Pat are obvious candidates for relatives of Daniel the patriarch. Cornelius and Lar (Laurence) are additional Driscoll names that pop up later. According to the church records, the nearest Michael Driscoll was with Catherine Keating in Garrane and later in Bawnishal (four children). There is one record of Denis Driscoll with Julianne Kaine (Keane) in Garrane More. Other Driscolls nearby are Daniel Driscoll with Catherine Murphy in Garrane More; Denis Leary with Johanna Driscoll in Garrane Beg; and Pat Driscoll with Margaret Sullivan in Coolbane. Looneys Mary was the godmother of Florence (1825); Darby was the godfather of Ellen (1830); and James the godfather of Johanna (1838). Minihanes The godmother of James Driscoll (1835) was Eleanor Minihane. There was an Eleanor Minihane with Tom Murphy in Coolbane. I don t know if Eleanor Minihane was related to the Minihanes in Lahertydaly, who later established close ties with these Driscolls. Susan J. Barretta sbarr10@earthlink.net 2

Murphys A Norry Murphy was the godmother of Pat Driscoll (1820). A Norry Murphy was also the godmother of Daniel (1830), son of Michael Driscoll and Catherine Keating. Daniel Driscoll and Margaret Looney were also the witnesses of the John Murphy-Mary Murphy marriage in Regans The ten children of Daniel Driscoll and Margaret Looney had seven Regan baptism sponsors. Other Names Tim Donovan, another godfather, appears again in conjunction with a Johanna Driscoll at the Caharagh parish baptism of Anne Lynch in There was a Tim Donovan and Mary Murphy in Garrane Beg, parents of Johanna 12 Feb There were numerous other Tim Donovans under our noses. However, a Tim Donovan Johanna Driscoll couple had a son Michael baptized in Marsh, Aughadown parish in 12 Oct The godparents were Denis Driscoll and Ellen Horrigan, who show up in Cullomane West in Tim and Johanna were also the parents of Johanna Donovan in Aughadown 14 May In light of some evidence tying the Garrane Beg Driscolls to Driscolls in Ardnagroghery in Aughadown, this couple could be important. There are numerous transcriptions of Tim Lynch in the Caheragh records, though few Tom Lynches as in our case. Lifespans of Daniel and Margaret There are no surviving baptism records for Daniel Driscoll and Margaret Looney nor is there a surviving marriage record. Margaret Looney Driscoll died on September 9, 1882 in Skibbereen, a widow. There is no surviving death record for Daniel. Susan J. Barretta sbarr10@earthlink.net 3

Tithe Applotment Books Introduction: Land Valuation Records A Dan Driscoll was in the Caheragh Tithe Applotment of 1827 on lot 205. A Denis Driscoll was on lot 208. Michael was not listed. Driscolls in the TA in the adjacent townlands were Florence and William (Coolbane), and Florence (Cooranuller). Further out were Coleman, Denis, and Jeremiah (Ballyourane); Philip (Kilnagospagh). There were also Whooleys in Cooranuller and Minihanes scattered around. Figure 2. Garrane in the Caheragh Tithe Applotment. A complete Caheragh Tithe Applotment transcribed index is at: In the surrounding townlands, Skull TA of 1827 lists a James (Cappagh More). Kilcoe TA of 1830 lists Timothy of Lissaclorig East. Abbeystrowry TA of 1835 lists Cornelius (Skeagh). Tenure Books The Tenure Book for Garrane in Caheragh taken a few years prior to the publication of Griffith s Valuation show a Dan Driscoll in 7d and a Daniel Driscoll in 10a. Unit 8 was occupied by Andrew Maguire. The Maguires ended up being in-laws. By the time the Tenure Books were taken, Denis Driscoll was gone. Susan J. Barretta sbarr10@earthlink.net 4

Part of Garrane in the Caheragh Tenure Book. Part of Garrane in the Caheragh Tenure Book. Griffith s Valuation The valuation published for Caheragh in 1853 shows 7D unoccupied but Daniel Driscoll still in 10a. Sir William W. Becher was the landlord of both units. Revision Books (Canceled Land Books) Garrane lists Daniel Driscoll in 10ac circa 1862; Daniel Driscoll with James Driscoll in 10ac circa 1876; and both men gone by Sir H.W. Becher took over the property. Cloghdonnell revision book with Daniel and James Driscoll lined out. Susan J. Barretta sbarr10@earthlink.net 5

Pat Driscoll (1820 -?) Pat Driscoll, baptized 30 Mar Prior editions of this book have flipped back and forth on Patrick. It was believed he married Catherine Sullivan, was widowed, remarried to Mary Regan, etc. It is back to Square One for Patrick. There is enough circumstantial evidence to conclude that the Patrick Driscoll who married Catherine Sullivan and immigrated to Maine, USA was not Patrick of Garrane Beg, born to Daniel and Margaret. The Patrick who ended up in Maine emigrated in A detailed discussion is in an appendix. Because that family traveled back and forth between Garrane Beg and Aghadown parish, it is possible the Aghadown Driscolls and the Garrane Beg Driscolls were related. But it is not clear how. A Patrick Driscoll witnessed the marriage of Florence Driscoll to Catherine Healy in 1855, years after the emigration of the Driscoll-Sullivan family. An intriguing record is the marriage of Patrick Driscoll and Catherine McCarthy of Glanaphuca on February 12, 1861 in Caheragh R.C. Parish. A Florence Driscoll was one witness. Another witness is transcribed as Felix McCarthy, but upon closer inspection of the image it looks like the name is Florence. Coincidentally, it is the same day that James Driscoll married Mary Minihane in Skibbereen. Also, Glanaphuca and Lackenafasoge were sometimes considered the same area and written together on records. Patrick s youngest brother John later did settle there with his wife Mary McCarthy. Mary s father was also a Florence McCarthy. Her mother was Mary Keohane. It is tempting to conclude that Catherine and Mary McCarthy were sisters. However, the record evidence is weak. This 1861 marriage record, for now, is a dead end. A couple named Patrick Driscoll and Catherine McCarthy, after 1861, had children in Goleen, residing near the Dhurode mine. It will not be easy to prove (or refute) any theory that Patrick moved down to Dhurode, since there were numerous Driscoll families scattered around Goleen. And there is no clear evidence that the family emigrated. Susan J. Barretta sbarr10@earthlink.net 10

Ellen Driscoll (1822 -?) Ellen Driscoll, baptized 21 Aug Since there is a later child named Ellen, it is assumed this Ellen died as a child. However, there have been cases where two living children in the same family have the same name. Susan J. Barretta sbarr10@earthlink.net 11

Florence Driscoll ( ) Florence Driscoll, baptized 7 Apr Searching for Margaret Looney in the online church records leads to son Florence Driscoll. Florence married Catherine Healy in Marriage of Florence Driscoll and Catherine Healy, 01 Feb Witnesses were a Patrick Driscoll, and a Jacobus Carey (James) who was probably a stand-in witness there for the convenience of the priest. Florence went to live in Lahertydaly, the Healy home. He and Catherine Healy had five children baptized in Skibbereen R.C. Parish. Parish: John 14 Apr 1871 Patrick Minihane, Ellen Minihane Daniel 20 May 1872 Daniel Shea, Jane Casey John was actually Johanna according to the birth record. However, the child died at two months old. Florence s trail resurfaced with a US naturalization record dated 1887 that states he arrived in the US through the port of Boston in July His residence was Auburn in Androscoggin County, Maine. Naturalization Index Record. The 1880 US census record is clear. Figure 6e. U.S. Census, 26 Jun Auburn, Maine, Third Ward. Florence was transcribed incorrectly in the 1900 U.S. Census as Clarence. He was still in Auburn, with wife Margaret and another child born in Maine - daughter Katie. There is evidence that Florence and Mary had another son, also named Florence. He may have been in a boy s school in Portland in the 1900 census, but so far I have not had a chance to follow up with the school. Florence Senior died in Lewiston 26 Mar Sadly, his eponymously named son died a year later at the young age of 21, of tuberculosis. Florence s daughter Mary with Catherine Healy married Richard Cavanaugh of Dover, New Hampshire in Their son Richard was born in Mary died at the age of 32 a year later, 26 Mar The New Hampshire death record, which lists the names of her parents, said she died from paralysis of the heart. The family emigrated for Maine, USA in 1873, and the two known children born after arriving in the U.S. were Catherine and Florence. So far we ve traced daughter Mary and we ve partially traced daughters Catherine and Ellen. According to city directories and the 1900 U.S. census, the family resided at 71 Newbury Street in Auburn. Neighbors included Cornelius Driscoll at 59 Newbury and William Driscoll at 67 Newbury. If her baptism record date is correct, she was 48 when they married! Marriage record of Margaret Driscoll and Daniel Patrick Minihane July Margaret and Daniel were in the 1920 US census with a 13 year old daughter named Helena. Since she wasn t in the 1910 census with them, Helena is rather mysterious. Well before Margaret s marriage, her Driscoll family settled in Lewiston, of Androscoggin County, Maine. 30 Johanna Driscoll McCarthy Crimeen ( ) Johanna Driscoll, baptized 18 Mar Johanna did not originally come up when I had Skibbereen Heritage initially research my Driscoll ancestry. 32 John Driscoll (1842 aft. 1918) John Driscoll, baptized 17 Jul When I first started researching this family, I thought John was Tim. Even now, I am not sure if I ve switched John and his sister Johanna in the baptism records. However, much information has been found. John surfaced when I started searching for Maguires in Caheragh in conjunction with Driscolls. He is known as Sean by his descendants. Marriage of John Driscoll and Mary McCarthy in Caheragh R.C. Parish. John married Mary McCarthy of Lackenafasoge (Lacka) February 2, A problem arose trying to find this record in civil registration. It didn t exist in the form I expected. I record was found, but I think the registration clerk was having a hectic day. The clerk recorded the groom s name, and that of his father, as McCarthy instead of Driscoll. Erroneous marriage record in civil registration. I trawled through the Caheragh R.C. records for evidence of such a McCarthy family in Garranemore and couldn t find one, nor could I find this McCarthy marriage in the Caheragh R.C. records. The bride s name and that of her father were McCarthy, as were the two witnesses. I Susan J. Barretta sbarr10@earthlink.net 24

did find a witness name in Garranemore, but no more. Since the officiating priest and the witnesses are the same in both records, I think the registration clerk made an error. John Driscoll went to live in Lackenafasoge. There were eight children born between 1870 and All were baptized in Caharagh R.C. Parish: Child Date Godparents Margaret 04 Mar 1870 Dan Driscoll, Mary McCarthy Ellen 11 Apr 1871 Tim McCarthy, Johanna McCarthy Pat 24 Mar 1872 Con Keohane, Honora Keohane Mary 19 Mar 1873 Denis Keohane, Julia Barrett Daniel 18 Apr 1875 Con Keohane, Mary Maguire Johannah 14 May 1876 Jeremiah Keohane, Margaret Keohane Florence Jul 1877 Timothy Keohane, Hanorah Maguire Jeremiah Jan 1879 Timothy Keohane, Johanna Minihane One of the birth records contained another recording error. The mother was listed as Keohane instead of McCarthy. The civil registration birth record of Margaret, the oldest daughter, lists Lackenafasoge and Glanaphuca together as the residence. Glanaphuca and Lacka are adjoining townlands. Civil registration record of Margaret Driscoll, daughter of John Driscoll and Mary McCarthy. The 1901 census, in the DED of Caheragh, in Lackenafasoge, lists John Driscoll, age 54, with a wife named Nora, aged 43, plus children Nora 16, James 14, Julia 12, Maggie 11, Mary 10, John 7, Bridget 5, and Katie 3. For about a year I wondered if this was the same John married to Mary McCarthy. I hypothesized that Mary McCarthy died and John s second wife was named Nora. There were two daughters named Margaret (Maggie) and Mary in the 1901 census, who would have been too young to have been John s two daughters by Mary McCarthy. So I also hypothesized there was a chance that those two daughters could have died very young. Continuing my search in 1911, I found John and Nora in the DED of Caheragh, in neighboring Barna. Still at home was Katie, 13. In Lacka was one Patrick Driscoll with wife Julia. They had two sons Daniel, 8 months, and Florence, 2. I was now in a position to find out much more information on John Driscoll. First, I used the 1911 Barna census record to estimate when John Driscoll married Nora and came up with Then using Family Search, I looked at civil registration and found marriages for John Driscoll and Nora Collins listed in the same year, volume, and page number. Similarly, I Susan J. Barretta sbarr10@earthlink.net 25

used the 1911 Lacka record to search for a marriage to a Patrick Driscoll and a Julia, estimated around John s marriage record not only confirmed my hypothesis that he married a second time, but my great-grandfather (John s nephew) Humphrey Collins was one of the listed wedding witnesses! This was convincing evidence indeed that I had found my great-great-granduncle. John s marriage to Hanora Collins of Driminidy. Nephew Humphry Collins, witness. On the marriage record it is noted that John s father, Dan, was already deceased. Mary McCarthy Driscoll must have died between January 1879 and April However, I have not been able to turn up the right death record in that time frame. The baptisms of the children of John Driscoll and Nora Collins were: Honora 09 Jan 1884 Godparents: Denis and Ellen Collins (probably maternal side relatives) James 04 Sep 1885 Godparents: Denis McCarthy and Ellen Collins Julia 21 Sep 1886 Godparents: John Hayes and Johanna Keohane Margaret 16 Jul 1888 Godparents: Jeremiah and Jane Keohane Mary 18 Aug 1889 Godparents: Jeremiah Sweeney and Margaret Cadogan John 09 Apr 1893 Godparents: Jerry Sweeney and Mary McCarthy Bridget 30 Nov 1894 Godparents: Jerry McCarthy and Nora Keohane Catherine 06 May 1897 Godparents: Patrick McCarthy and Johanna Driscoll Susan J. 35 Figure 12f. Marriage of Patrick Driscoll to Julia Hourihan of Gurrane. Son Patrick, or Patsy Sean as he is known in Ireland, married Julia Hourihan in As far as we know, Julia was almost 40 at the time of the marriage. She was from Garrane. The marriage record confirms Patrick was John s son. Where was Patrick during the 1901 census? Julia was actually in the United States for a few years then came back. Maybe Patrick did too. We know that Patrick and Julia had two sons. Florence Daniel 04 Jan 1909 Godparents: Morty Hourihane, Nora McCarthy 04 Aug 1910 Godparents: Timothy McCarthy, Annie Donovan Revision books show that John s son Patrick was in Lacka as late as 1918, and the Driscolls were gone from Barna by about Julia Hourihan apparently died between 1911 and Her death record has not been found. 36 Patrick remarried, to Hannah Sullivan of Glanaphuca, in The marriage record states that her father, John Sullivan, was deceased. However, Patrick s father, John, is not noted as deceased. So Sean probably was probably alive at least to Patrick and his wife Hannah Sullivan had many more children. John 1919 Peggy 1926 Ella 1920 Michael 1927 Julia 20 Sep 1921 Jeremiah 1930 Hannah 12 Mar 1923 Eileen 06 Aug 1931 Madgie 1924 Kathleen 1933 Patrick s younger half-brother John and half-sister Margaret arrived in Boston on the Franconia on 18 April Also on the passenger list was their first cousin once removed Julia Driscoll (Cadogan) of Currabeg. The Franconia arrived just three days after the sinking of the Titanic. The nerves of the Franconia passengers must have been on edge. John went on to marry Theresa Donovan, originally from Coornishal, Kilmacabea parish, on 01 Apr 1923 in Boston. Among Patsy Sean s children, we know: Florence (1909) married Catherine Brennan in the UK on June 16, Summary John, or Sean, as he is called in Ireland, was the youngest child of Daniel Driscoll and Margaret Looney from Garrane Beg. He was born in He married Mary McCarthy of Lackenafasoge (Lacka) in The family lived in Lacka. Sean and Mary had eight known children. Not all of them survived childhood. Mary died between 1879 and April 1883, when Sean married a second time, to Honora Collins from Driminidy. Sean and Nora had eight known children. Daughter Johanna (1876) may have gone by Annie, and married Patrick J. Donovan in Boston on April 21, His age was 30. Patrick s parents were listed as Patrick Donovan and Ellen Neill. There was a Patrick Donovan baptized July 27, 1873, in Deelish, to a Patrick Donovan and Ellen Neill. This needs further investigation, as there was another Annie Driscoll, with parents also named John Driscoll and Mary McCarthy, who married in Boston January 7, That spouse was James T. Worth. Son Florence (1877) married Julia Hayes in Boston on February 23, Julia s parents were Patrick Hayes and Mary Driscoll. A couple with those names lived in the Dunmanway district, in Maulanimrish. Their daughter Julia was born October 1, Florence and Julia had daughter Mary on January 12, 1909 and daughter Julia Florence Driscoll on September 19, 1911, both in Boston. Julia married a William Keegan. Our relationship to this family seems borne out by an Ancestry DNA match. Daughter Honora (1884) married a Galway man. Susan J. Barretta sbarr10@earthlink.net 28

Son James (1885) went to America, and apparently did not marry. Daughter Julia (1886) married Denis Cronin of Bantry on August 10, They had daughters Kitty, Sheila, and Nonie. Daughter Mary (1889) went to the US and entered the convent. She died in Ohio. Daughter Bridget (1894) went to England, and did not marry. Daughter Catherine (1897) went to England, and had no family. Son Patrick, or Patsy Sean (1872), also married twice. His first marriage, to Julia Hourihane in 1908, produced two sons. His second marriage was to Hannah Sullivan in 1918, and produced many more children. Patsy Sean s son Florence married Catherine Brennan in London on June 16, His son Daniel married Bridget Sheehan in Rath parish on November 27, His son Michael married Eileen Kelly. One of their daughters entered a convent in Clonakilty. Another daughter became a doctor and resided in Passage West. A son went to live in Dunisky. Patsy Sean s daughter Eileen married a McSweeney and resided in Macroom district. Patsy Sean died in A death record for Sean has not been found. Figure 12g. Patsy Sean Death Record. Susan J. 38 DNA Research A long-standing goal to genetically test a direct paternal line Driscoll has been achieved. Two men descended from Sean Driscoll (b. 1842) have been tested. The two testers are paternal line second cousins, having different great-grandmothers (one is descended from Sean s first wife Mary McCarthy, the other is descended from Sean s second wife Nora Collins). On 111 points of measurement (called markers) on the Y chromosome, our two testers have three mutations of difference. One of our testers has had advanced Y DNA testing. The deep ancestry of our Garrane Beg ancestor Driscolls fall into Haplogroup I2a. Subclades of this grouping are considered among the indigenous peoples of Europe. Ireland, being on the edge of western Europe, is thought to have harbored a residual group of descendants of these post-ice Age peoples. They pre-date farming societies (Neolithic settlers) and metal working societies (Bronze Age settlers), who fall under Haplogroup R1b. The genomes that have been sequenced from ancient human remains discovered in Ireland fall into Neolithic and Bronze Age groupings. R1b is overwhelmingly predominant among Irish men today. I2a is comparatively sparse. Archaeologists have not yet identified ancient I2a Irish remains. The most important mutation that I2a Driscolls carry is called I-A There are more Driscoll men in the Driscoll Y DNA project with this mutation than any other mutation. It probably occurred during the first millennium. We are now discovering groupings under A14359 that will eventually help us carve out Driscoll lineages in the second millennium. Some attempts have been made to date the mutations that I2a Driscolls share. Sean s descendants have a mutation under A14359 called I-A Other project Driscolls sharing that mutation were from Skeaf, Kilmaloda, near Clonakilty. A19162 may also have occurred before the second millennium. The Garrane Beg and Skeaf Driscolls do not look like close relatives (within the past years) by other Y chromosome measures. Susan J. Barretta sbarr10@earthlink.net 30

The map shows other Driscoll I2a mutations as well as R1b mutations in west Cork as identified by the Driscoll Y DNA project. So far, no I2a Driscolls have been discovered from the islands in Roaringwater Bay. I-A13664 (Timoleague), is a parent mutation to A14359 and probably dates to the first millennium. I-Y (Aghaville and Coolbawn) and I-BY37208 (Goleen and Bantry) are very old cousin branches to our branch I-A The box on the right shows the I2a Y chromosome mutations described here, with the most recent attempts to date them. A19162 is estimated to be about 1000 years P C.E. Y C.E. A C.E. Y C.E. A C.E. A C.E. A C.E. A19162 unknown BY86789 unknown Y C.E. Y unknown BY37208 unknown old. Hopefully, future advances in genetics research will successfully date these mutations so we know how far back our ancient relationships reach. The research will also move forward, discovering mutations defining Driscoll lineages right up to the present day. Another type of DNA test covers our autosomes, the pairs of chromosomes in our cell nuclei. Through autosomal DNA testing, descendants of Ellen (1830), Margaret (1833), Mary (1827), Johanna (1838), and Sean (1842) have been linked together. Susan J. Barretta sbarr10@earthlink.net 31

Current and Future Research Future discoveries remain pending until new avenues of research materialize. So far we have not found evidence that descendants of Florence (1825) and James (1835), who settled in Maine, have living descendants today. Patrick Driscoll (1820) remains in the shadows. It will take considerable research into the Goleen area Driscolls to determine whether the Patrick who was the patriarch of the Dhurode family around the 1860 s was instead from Driscolls in the area. This still remains to be done. Dan Driscoll Junior remains a mystery. It is not evident that he survived infancy. We will wait for Ireland to put more civil registration records online and then investigate marriages of men named Daniel Driscoll to see if anything turns up. There is no death record for Mary McCarthy Driscoll between 1879 and 1883 nor for her husband Sean. There is no record of the death of Julia Hourihane Driscoll, which occurred between 1911 and Margaret Looney Driscoll went to live with her daughter Margaret Cadogan after the death of our patriarch Daniel. She died in Skibbereen in There is no death record for Daniel. We do not know where Daniel and Margaret were interred. We do not know the relationship of our patriarch Daniel Driscoll to other Driscolls in the Caheragh area. We must wait for more Driscoll men to take a Y DNA test and then see how they compare to the two testers representing our lineage. Susan J. Barretta sbarr10@earthlink.net 32

Appendix: Driscolls of Ardnagroghery Enough circumstantial evidence has been discovered to conclude that Patrick Driscoll, who married Catherine Sullivan in 1841 and immigrated with his family to the United States, was not the son of Daniel Driscoll and Margaret Looney. That same evidence does, however, suggests a possible relationship between this Patrick and the Driscolls of Garrane Beg. Here were the initial reservations about modelling Patrick of Garrane Beg as the husband of Catherine Sullivan: 1. Patrick of Garrane Beg was born and baptized in He married Catherine Sullivan in 1841, before he was even 21. That is really young. 2. The family of Patrick and Catherine went back and forth between a location in Aghadown parish (believed to be Ardnagroghery) and Garrane Beg in Caheragh. On the surface it could have just been because they were residing with her family, but it could have been indicative of Driscoll family ties in Caheragh as well. 3. The names of the children in the family of Patrick and Catherine were somewhat different than the names of the children of the other brothers. None of out Garrane Beg male ancestors had a son named Timothy, except for this Patrick. 4. There was only one U.S. census record suggesting that Patrick might have been born in All other census records, and his burial record at Mount Hope in Lewiston, Maine suggest that he was five to seven years older than Patrick of Garrane Beg. Now here is the data suggesting that Catherine Sullivan s husband was linked to Ardnagroghery: 1. Two of Patrick s and Catherine s children were baptized in Aughadown R.C. Parish. Unfortunately, the residence is not readable on both records. 2. On the marriage record of Patrick and Catherine was a witness named Cornelius Driscoll. That name has never appeared in records for our Garrane Beg Driscolls. However, a Cornelius Driscoll did show up on Newbury Street, Auburn, Maine, literally a neighbor within walking distance to Florence Driscoll, who most definitely was from Garrane Beg. A Cornelius Driscoll appeared in Ardnagroghery in the 1828 Aghadown Tithe Applotment Book. 3. The other marriage witness was a Thomas Gill. He showed up later in Ardnagroghery, and possibly later in Griffith s Valuation in Lisheen Lower, adjacent to Ardnagroghery. 4. A news clipping in the Lewiston Evening Journal, dated August 5, 1893, reports that a Miss Katie Driscoll, along with a friend Miss Katie Lynch, visited the Chicago World s Fair. Katie Driscoll stayed on in Chicago to visit her uncle, Hon. Timothy Driscoll. Catherine, daughter of James, was born in Another Catherine, daughter of Florence, was born in Another Catherine, daughter of Patrick, was born in The first two Catherines, daughters of men from Garrane Beg, were still children in The latter Catherine remained single, and would have been in a position to take a leisurely trip to Chicago. There was a Kate Lynch in Lewiston in the 1880 U.S. census, who could have been the traveling companion. So the evidence is reasonable, but not 100% conclusive, that it was Ardnagroghery Patrick s daughter who went to Chicago. Susan J. Barretta sbarr10@earthlink.net 33

If Patrick s daughter Catherine went to Chicago to visit her uncle Timothy, then Timothy was Patrick s brother. But (despite the various interpretations of the Caheragh church records), no known Timothy has been discovered in Garrane Beg. 5. There is a death record for a Timothy Driscoll in Cook County, Illinois, dated January His parents were listed as Daniel Driscoll and Mary Hurley. There was a couple with those names in Ardnagroghery, Aghadown. Among their children in the baptism records were Timothy (1824) and Jane (1827), which match the names of two of Patrick s children. Patrick himself was probably born before the start of Aughadown records. Daniel Driscoll, perhaps Timothy s father, is listed with Cornelius Driscoll in Ardnagroghery in the Aghadown TA book. Catherine Sullivan s husband, as part of a Driscoll family in Ardnagroghery, is a better fit than as part of the Garrane Beg family. The children baptized in Caheragh show Garrane as a residence. Their family records in Ireland were as follows: 21 Feb 1841 Marriage of Patrick Driscoll and Catherine Sullivan. Witnesses Cornelius Driscoll, Thomas Gill. 08 Dec 1841 Baptism of Daniel in Aughadown. Godparents: Daniel Driscoll, E. Donovan 02 Dec 1843 Baptism of Margaret in Caheragh. Godparents: Daniel Driscoll, Ellen Twomey 24 Jan 1846 Baptism of Mary in Caheragh. Godparents: John Regan, Mary Minihane 13 Dec 1846 Baptism of Ellen in Aughadown. Godparents: John Sullivan, Mary Hurley The 1850 U.S. census shows Patrick (35) and Catherine (30) in Lewiston. (In 1854, Lewiston left Lincoln County and became part of Androscoggin County.) Patrick s birth year calculates to Children listed are: Mary (6); Ellen (4); Ann (10 mos). Daniel, born 1841, and Margaret, born 1843, are missing. Daniel, as we will find later, was deceased. Also listed are numerous Ireland-born people living with them: Eliza Sullivan (17); Michael Regan, carpenter (30); Patrick Donovan, laborer (30); Jeremiah O Brine [Brien], laborer (28); John Cadigan, laborer (28); Michael McCarty, laborer (34); James Harly, laborer (35). Perhaps Eliza was Catherine s sister U.S. Census. Family of Patrick Driscoll and Catherine Sullivan. Susan J. Barretta sbarr10@earthlink.net 34

The following naturalization index card shows a Boston arrival in 1848 and naturalization date of 31 Aug Naturalization Index Record. The name of the witness Jeremiah Harley has the same surname as the James Harley living with the Driscoll family in the 1850 census. Source: "United States New England Naturalization Index, ," index and images, FamilySearch ( : accessed 28 Apr 2014), Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont D540 (A.H.) - D626 (William) > image 4643 of 5113; citing NARA microfilm publication M1299 The actual naturalization record states he left Ireland in 1848 and arrived in Boston February, So far I have not found ship records to support that date of arrival. The 1860 U.S. census lists Patrick as 50, pushing his birth year back further to Following are Catherine (45); Mary (15); Ellen (13); Ann (11); Catherine (7); Jane (5); Lizzie (3); and Timothy (1) U.S. Census. Family of Patrick Driscoll and Catherine Sullivan. Susan J. Barretta sbarr10@earthlink.net 35

The 1870 census lists the family in Androscoggin Ward 3. Patrick is 50, making his birth year about Catherine is also 50. Also listed are Ellen, working in mill (20) and born in Maryland, not Maine or Ireland (perhaps an error); Anna at home (18) and born in Maine; Kate at school (16) and born in Maine; Kate (14) and Lizzy (12) at school and born in Maine U.S. Census. Family of Patrick Driscoll and Catherine Sullivan. Page U.S. Census. Family of Patrick Driscoll and Catherine Sullivan. Page 2. In 1872, Patrick Driscoll was working as a sexton for a Catholic church and living on Park Street, near Ash Street. There were two Catholic churches within close proximity to the Driscoll residence. Given the choice of St. Peter s on Ash Street, with its predominantly French population, or St. Patrick s on Bates Street, run by Irish priests, I am inclined to think the family attended St. Patrick s. Greenough, Jones & Co Directory of Lewiston & Auburn Lisbon Street in Lewiston runs parallel to Park Street. There was a back alley between the two streets. Pat Driscoll had property on Lisbon Street that he rented out to G.H. Pitcher, who dealt in clothing. On Saturday, June 9, 1877, a fire broke out in the Lisbon Street store. Fortunately, all the affected partied had insured their businesses. By the news account: the street was jammed with people. Ropes were stretched across the street to give the firemen an open space to work in source: Lewiston Evening Journal, Jun 11, 1877, p. 3. Susan J. Barretta sbarr10@earthlink.net 36

The 1880 census lists the family on Park Street, house number 24: Patrick, at home (65); Catherine, wife (64); Jennie V (24) and Lizzie F. (22), both working in the woolen mill U.S. Census. Family of Patrick Driscoll and Catherine Sullivan. Patrick died in His widow Catherine was living at 71 Park Street in Greenough & Co. Directory of Lewiston & Auburn Much of this information fell into place upon the discovery of newly uploaded records in Find A Grave in April, The effort to create the Mount Hope Cemetery records was driven in part by the Franco-American Genealogical Society record collection for Mount Hope Cemetery in Lewiston. That collection is online at Lewiston Public Library: Mount Hope Cemetery is here: The following people are listed in Section D, Lot 192: Patrick Driscoll, age 69, buried 1 Dec 1882, husband of Catherine Driscoll Catherine Driscoll, age 75, buried 15 Jan 1893, wife of Patrick Driscoll Daniel F. Driscoll, age 18 months, son of a Patrick and Catherine Driscoll, died 7 Jun Timothy J. Driscoll, age 3, buried 23 Nov 1861, son of Patrick and Catherine Driscoll Katherine T. Driscoll, age 92, buried 31 Aug 1942, daughter of Patrick and Catherine Sullivan The memorial to the deceased child Daniel exactly matches Patrick s and Catherine s son born December 1841 by name and age. A search for other Patrick Driscolls married to Catherine Sullivans in Ireland around the same time turned up nothing within the appropriate timeframe that was relevant. The online west Cork church records turned up one couple married in 1820 in Schull East, one in 1869 in Cork South Parish, and one in 1878 in Monkstown clearly too recent in time to be the same couple. rootsireland.ie did not show anything promising. The listing of children on the tombstone in particular was the piece of evidence needed to conclude that Patrick Driscoll and Catherine Sullivan were successfully tracked into the United States.
