2 Reflection Today s image presented in the word gives us the sense that somehow Jesus is gone. He is taken away (Acts 1 & Matthew 28). This notion seems to be affirmed in the portrait of the disciples who are standing on the hill side. Notice they are not simply milling around, but actually saying good-by to Jesus, but this picture can be misleading. The Feast of the Ascension (in which our focus is more on the specifics of whether Jesus went up or did he disappear or was there another phenomena), not realizing of course that all of our speculations do not make a real difference or change how the ascension may have taken place. What really matters in regard to the Ascension is our willingness to discover what the resurrection has meant for us: Have we been transformed by the experience of Easter? When Jesus says... go and make disciples of others (Matthew 28) he is talking about how we manifest God s presence in our world. Easter is not simply an experience outside of ourselves. Easter is about an ontological change in who we are, who we claim to be, and how others perceive what we are all about. It is making the resurrection real and tangible in our world. It is about making a real difference. It means being recognized by others that we share in the very being of God, so much so that Easter reaches into the soul of our lives and transforms the hearts of others so that the Easter experience becomes theirs. The question and challenge before us on this Feast of the Ascension might very well have to do with the posture we take in our lives. If resurrection is about embracing Easter and the Ascension, then we must resist the temptation by presenting ourselves in such a way that there is no difference in the way we live our lives, the values we hold, and the way we perceive others. So, how do we start (or continue) and where should we seek the Risen-Ascended Christ? Exactly where the Gospel directs us: Right here, right now! Resurrection is not something from the past (a nice story of what happened a long time ago at an empty tomb) nor is it simply something about the future, resurrection is what is happening now! Perhaps, this was not the experience of the disciples and maybe not ours as well because like Jesus followers we often find ourselves standing on the hill starring upward (Acts 1) instead of directing our attention outward. Resurrection, as strange as it may seem, poses the question what are we looking for? Maybe our difficulty is that we are simply not looking hard enough because we have the notion that Jesus is gone or has left us or maybe we do not care to notice or we are looking in all the wrong places. In order to be transformed by the resurrection and transfigured by the ascension we need to take notice. Today s word advises us to remain open to see the Risen Christ s Spirit, who will in turn enable us to see God more clearly; however there is a caution here: Saint Paul s tells us that nothing is certain (Ephesians 1). It is a matter of remaining open in order to perceive the unbelievable possibility of glimpsing into what may very well be the Risen-Ascended Christ (Ephesians 1) in the unfolding of the experiences of our lives, and realize this is when the resurrection becomes the Ascension: The moment we are able to stop looking upward but outward (Acts 1) and recognize and see our world not the way others see things, but embrace our lived experience and world with the transformative life of the Risen Christ, so that the power of Easter will truly make a difference in our world. Perhaps this is precisely when we ascend into the very heart of God with Jesus! Father Michael-Dwight 2

Be a Volunteer!! Volunteering at Summerfest is a great way to get involved and meet new people. All parishioners are invited to volunteer in the events booths. Shift hours are 4 hours in length. The volunteer table will be on the plaza after weekend masses in May. 5 VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2017 Summer is almost here and that means it s time for this years Vacation Bible School! This Year s Theme is: St. Angela Merici Church National Park will open July 17 21, 9:00AM -12:30PM Open to students Pre-K to 6th grades. Join the action for exciting, Bible stories, crafts, games, skits, snacks, and prizes. Registration forms for students are now available at the CFF Office and Parish Center Office. Deadline to sign-up is June 30th. After the deadline you can call to check for remaining availability. 7 Parish Life Celebrate our Newly Baptized The Parish Center Office and Ministries will close at 2:00 PM on Friday, May 26 th through Monday, May 29 th in Observance of Memorial Day. Eucharist on Memorial Day, Monday, May 29 th will be at 8:00 AM. The Adoration Chapel will close on Friday, May 26 th at Midnight through Monday, May 29 th. The Chapel will re-open on Tuesday, May 30 th. Spend an hour in prayer to appease divine justice, to implore mercy for sinners, to honor me, to console me for my bitter suffering. In response to Jesus request we now pray in the intimacy of the Adoration Chapel. Please join us. 8 Faith Formation Confirmation Confirmation 1 Summer Registration Packets are available in the Parish Center Office. Registration begins May 15 June 4. Registration is on a first come basis and we will only take 50 students again this year. Confirmation 1 Fall and Confirmation 2 Registration Packets will be available on July 1 st. Confirmation 2 Packets will be ed directly to all students who were in Confirmation 1 during the year. If you do not receive an by July 2 nd please pick up a Registration Packet from the Parish Center Office during normal business hours. Also, if you are a confirmed college student and interested in attending BLAZE, we will be having an Informational Meeting on June 11 th from 3:30-4:30 PM in our Youth Room.
