LITURGICAL SUGGESTIONS FOR CHRISTMAS AND EPIPHANY WORSHIP PLANNING Some Introducty Comments Liturgy Pacific If there is a particular sensitivity in the congregation towards the repeated use of masculine language and images f God, especially f the First Person of the Trinity, then review the terms of address used at the beginning of the collects, the prayer over the gifts and after communion. Often this initial term of address will provide an alternative to language images deemed unhelpful to the wship life of the community. If there is a particular sensitivity to the repeated use of Ld as a Christological title, then it is appropriate to use Jesus the Christ as an alternative to Jesus Christ our Ld. Similarly, it is appropriate to use incarnate Wd as an alternative to Son. Sunday, 31 December 2017, can be kept as either the First Sunday after Christmas as the Feast of the Epiphany: The feast of the Epiphany may be observed on the Sunday befe 6 January if that day is a weekday.... The Sunday after the Epiphany is always observed as the feast of the Baptism of Christ. [BAS 15] Sunday, 7 January 2018, is to be kept as the Baptism of Christ [see BAS 15 quoted above]. Contempary English makes a distinction between that as a relative pronoun and so that as a consequence of a preceding petition wish action, e.g., This is the book that I bought and Guide us, so that we may be faithful. In the suggestions that follow there are occasional alterations to the text to reflect this change in contempary English usage. 15 Holy, holy, holy Ld, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your gly. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Ld. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Ld. Hosanna in the highest. Holy and gracious God, accept our praise, through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ; who on the night he was handed over to suffering and death, took bread and gave you thanks, saying, Take, and eat: this is my body which is broken f you. In the same way he took the cup, saying, This is my blood which is shed f you. When you do this, you do it in memy of me. Remembering, therefe, his death and resurrection, we offer you this bread and this cup, giving thanks that you have made us wthy to stand in your presence and serve you. We ask you to send your Holy Spirit upon the offering of your holy Church. Gather into one all who share in these sacred mysteries, filling them with the Holy Spirit and confirming their faith in the truth, that together we may praise you and give you gly through your Servant, Jesus Christ. All gly and honour are yours, Father and Son, with the Holy Spirit in the holy Church, now and f ever. Amen. All gly and honour are yours, Auth of creation and Wd of redemption, with the Spirit of wisdom in the holy Church, now and f ever. Amen. The Ld be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Ld. Let us give thanks to the Ld our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. May God be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to God. Let us give thanks to God our Creat. It is right to offer thanks and praise. Eucharistic Prayer 3 [BAS ] Christmas [BAS 219 alt.] Blessed are you, gracious God, creat of heaven and earth; we give you thanks and praise through Jesus Christ our Ld, who in the mystery of his incarnation was made perfect man/fully human of the flesh of the Virgin Mary his mother; in him we have seen a new and radiant vision of your gly. Therefe we praise you, joining our voices with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven, who f ever sing this hymn to proclaim the gly of your name. 15

Christmas [ELW] It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Saviour Jesus Christ. In the wonder and mystery of the Wd made flesh you have opened the eyes of faith to a new and radiant vision of your gly, that beholding the God made visible, we may be drawn to love the God whom we cannot see. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: 1 Incarnation [BAS 220 alt.] Blessed are you, gracious God, creat of heaven and earth, because in the mystery of the Wd made flesh you have caused a new light to shine in our hearts, to give knowledge of salvation in the face of your Son Jesus Christ our Ld/your Beloved Jesus the Christ. Now with angels and archangels and the whole company of heaven, we lift our voices to proclaim the gly of your name. Epiphany [BAS] Blessed are you, gracious God, creat of heaven and earth; you have revealed your eternal plan of salvation, and have shown your Son Jesus Christ/your Beloved Jesus the Christ to be the light of all peoples. Therefe with angels and archangels we raise our voices in joyful praise to proclaim the gly of your name. Third Preface of the Ld s Day --- The Baptism of Christ [BAS] Blessed are you, gracious God, creat of heaven and earth; by water and the Holy Spirit you have made us a holy people in Jesus Christ our Ld/Jesus the Christ; you renew that mystery in bread and wine and nourish us, to show fth your gly in all the wld. Therefe with angels and archangels, and with all the holy people who have served you in every age, we raise our voices to proclaim the gly of your name. Epiphany of our Ld, Baptism of Our Ld [ELW] It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Saviour Jesus Christ. By the leading of a star he was shown fth to all nations; in the waters of the Jdan you proclaimed him your beloved Son, and in the miracle of water turned to wine he revealed your gly. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Transfiguration of Our Ld [ELW] It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Saviour Jesus Christ; who, sharing our life, lived among us to reveal your gly and love, that our darkness should give way to your own brilliant light. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: 1 1 The musical settings f the Prefaces are found in Evangelical Lutheran Wship: Leaders Desk Edition (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, 2006),

Holy, holy, holy Ld, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your gly. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Ld. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Ld. Hosanna in the highest. We give thanks to you, Ld our God, f the goodness and love you have made known to us in creation; in calling Israel to be your people; in your Wd spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Wd made flesh, Jesus your Son. F in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Saviour and Redeemer of the wld. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us wthy to stand befe you. In him, you have brought us out of err into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, a death he freely accepted, our Ld Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: this is my body which is given f you. Do this f the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed f you and f many [] f all people f the fgiveness of sins. 2 Whenever you drink it, do this f the remembrance of me. Therefe, Father/ Creat of all, accding to his command, we remember his death, we proclaim his resurrection, we await his coming in gly; and we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, Ld of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts, that they may be the sacrament of the body of Christ and his blood of the new covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we, made acceptable in him, may be sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, reconcile all things in Christ, and make them new, and bring us to that city of light where you dwell with all your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Ld, the firstbn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the auth of our salvation; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and gly are yours, almighty Father/Source of all being, now and f ever. Amen. 2 Anglican theology does not teach a limited atonement. Christ s self-giving is f all peoples in all times and in all places. The Greek phrase translated as f many means me than you can imagine and is intended to be expansive rather than limiting. The inclusion of f all people, as used in Evangelical Lutheran Wship, is a faithful revision of the wds concerning the cup. 17

Thanksgiving at the Table III [ELW 110] Christmas [ELW] It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Saviour Jesus Christ. 19 Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Ld. Hosanna in the highest. Holy One, the beginning and the end, the giver of life: Blessed are you f the birth of creation. Blessed are in the darkness and in the light. Blessed are you f your promise to your people. Blessed are you in the prophets hopes and dreams. Blessed are you f Mary s openness to your will. Blessed are you f your Son Jesus, the Wd made flesh. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Ld Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given f you. Do this f the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it f all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed f you and f all people f the fgiveness of sin. Do this f the remembrance of me. Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. With this bread and cup we remember your Wd dwelling among us, full of grace and truth. We remember our new birth in his death and resurrection. We look with hope f his coming. Come, Ld Jesus. Holy God, we long f your Spirit. Come among us. Bless this meal. May your Wd take flesh in us. Awaken your people. Fill us with your light. Bring the gift of peace on earth. Come, Holy Spirit. All praise and gly are yours, Holy One of Israel, Wd of God incarnate, Power of the Most High, one God, now and fever. Amen. 4 Breaking of the Bread In addition to the Fraction Anthem contained in The Book of Alternative Services the following might be used at the Breaking of the Bread. Christmas to Epiphany We break the bread of life, and that life is the light of the wld. God here among us, light in the midst of us, bring us to light and life. [BAS 213] 4 This concluding doxology is a faithful alternative to the traditional Trinitarian fmula and might be used me frequently in wship outside the Advent season. 19

God of Mary and Joseph, you wonderfully created us and me wonderfully redeem us, may we who eat this bread and drink this cup share in the divine life of Christ. [BAS 275 alt.] God of all the nations, may we who eat this bread and drink this cup, recognize Christ in this holy sacrament and in all who are made in your image. [BAS 280 alt.] Epiphany to the Last Sunday after Epiphany We break the bread of life, and that life is the light of the wld. God here among us, light in the midst of us, bring us to light and life. [BAS 349 alt.] God of gly, you nourish us with bread from heaven, fill us with you Holy Spirit, so that your light may shine in all the wld. [BAS 350 alt.] Gracious God, you nourish us with the life of Christ, may we who eat this bread and drink this cup be strengthened f your service in the wld. [BAS 351 alt.] Holy God, in Christ Jesus we see your gly, may we who eat this bread and drink this cup reflect his gly in wd and deed. [BAS 419 alt.] Blessing The Book of Alternative Services provides one blessing f use during the Incarnation season. There are some additional texts provided below. 20
