DOCTRINAL STATEMENT ARTICLES OF FAITH Each and every person, in order to become or remain a member of the church shall be required to subscribe to the following articles of faith: THE HOLY SCRIPTURES We believe the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments as being verbally inspired by God and inerrant and infallible in the original writings, and that they are of supreme and final authority. Verbally: This means that the individual words of the Bible are true and without error in the original writings. Therefore, more than just the thought or concept is inspired, but also every word (Matt. 5:17; Prov. 30:5-6). The term plenary is often used with the word verbal to give the view that all Scripture is fully and equally inspired (2Tim. 3:16-17). Inspired (Inspiration): Inspiration is that particular work of God by which the Holy Spirit, becoming the co-author of Scripture, supernaturally directed the writers of Scripture and without excluding their human intelligence, individuality, literary style, personal feelings, or any other human factor, God s own complete and coherent message to men was recorded in perfect accuracy and the very words of the Bible bear the authority of this divine authorship (2Pet. 1:20-21). Inerrant: Inerrant means that the Scriptures in their original writings were without error (2Pet. 1:20-21; John 10:35; Luke 16:17). Infallible: Infallible means that the Scriptures in their original writings were incapable of error and never wrong (John 10:35; Luke 16:17). Final Authority: The Scriptures are God s special revelation (communication of truth) to man and because they are inspired and inerrant they become our final authority. However, we take careful note of what the Bible indicates as not being authoritative, such as Satan s statement to Eve in the Garden of Eden, You surely shall not die. (Gen. 3:4-5; 2Tim. 3:16-17). TRINITY We believe in one Triune God, eternally existing in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, co-eternal in being, co-identical in nature, co-equal in power and glory, and having the same attributes and perfection (Deut. 6:4; Matt. 3:13-17; Matt. 28:19; 2Cor. 13:14). THE PERSON AND WORK OF GOD THE FATHER - We believe the Father, the first person of the Trinity, decreed for His glory all things that come to pass. He providentially upholds and governs all creatures and events according to His own purpose. Through His plan and in His wisdom, He has graciously provided salvation for mankind through Jesus Christ (Psalm 33:6; 103:19; 135:6 Dan. 4:34-35; Rom. 1:3-4; 1Cor. 15:3-4; Col. 1:15; 2:3; Heb. 1:1-4; 2:17-18; 4:14-16). THE PERSON AND WORK OF GOD THE SON: 1. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, became man, without ceasing to be God, having been conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary, in order that He might reveal God and redeem sinful man (John 1:1-4, 14; Luke 1:35). 2. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ lived a sinless life and accomplished our redemption through His death on the cross as a substitutionary sacrifice. Our justification is made sure by His literal, physical resurrection from the dead. (Heb. 4:15; Rom. 3:24-25; 1Pet. 2:24; Eph. 1:7; 1Pet. 1:3-5).
3. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ ascended to heaven and is now exalted at the right hand of God where He exercises universal authority. He is the Head of the Church, and as our High Priest, He fulfills the ministry of Representative, Intercessor, and Advocate on our behalf. He is also preparing a place for us until He returns for us (Matt. 28:18; Col. 1:17-18; Eph. 1:22-23; Acts 1:9-10; Heb. 9:24; 7:25; Rom. 8:34; 1John 2:1-2; John 14:1-13). THE PERSON AND WORK OF GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT 1. We believe that the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Godhead (Matt. 28:19; 2Cor. 13:14). 2. We believe that He convicts the world (non-believers) of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment (John 16:8). 3. We believe that at the moment of salvation, He acts upon the new believer resulting in regeneration, indwelling the believer, baptizing them into the body of Christ, giving them spiritual gift (s), and sealing them for glorification (John 3:38; Rom. 8:9; 1Cor. 6:19-20; 1Cor. 12:13-14; 7:11; Eph. 1:13-14). 4. We believe that in the daily walk of the believer He is the divine teacher who guides believers into all truth (1John 2:27) 5. We believe the Holy Spirit is ready to fill (control and empower) the believer, which is a special privilege and duty of all believers. To be filled, the believer s responsibility is three-fold: Do not grieve the Spirit, do not quench the Spirit, and to walk with (rely upon) the Spirit. (John 16:13; Eph. 4:30; 5:18; 1Thess. 5:19, Ga 5:16) CREATION - We believe that God, acting in all three persons, created the universe in six days. We believe that God created man in His own image and gave him dominion (Gen 1; Pls. 33:6; John 1:3, 10; Col. 1:16). SATAN We believe that Satan is a person, a created angel, the author of sin, and the cause of the willful fall of man in Eden. We believe he is the open and declared enemy of God and man, and that he will be eternally punished in the lake of fire (Neh. 9:6; Job. 1:6-7; Pls.148: 2,5; Isa. 14:12-17; Ezek. 28:11-19; Matt. 4:2-11; 25:41; Col. 1:16; 1Pet. 5:8; Rev. 20:10). MANKIND We believe that mankind was created in the image of God, sinned, and thereby incurred not only physical death, but spiritual death, which is separation from God, and that all human beings are born with a sinful nature. We believe that every part of man s being (i.e. intellect, will, emotions, and body) is corrupted by sin. We further believe that natural man is dead in his sin, incapable of saving himself (Gen. 1:26-27; 5:1; 1Cor. 11:7; Rom. 6:23; 3:10, 22-23; 5:12; 8:7; Gal. 3:22; Eph. 2:1-3,12). SALVATION We believe that salvation is the gift of God brought to man by grace and received through personal faith (trust, or belief) in the Lord Jesus Christ. We believe that Jesus Christ died according to the Scriptures as are representative and substitutionary sacrifice, and that all who believe in Him are justified based on His shed blood (Eph. 2:8-10; John 1:12; Eph. 1:7; 1Pet. 1:18-19; 2Cor. 5:14-21; Heb. 4:15-16; 1John 3:5; Rom. 1:13; 1John 2:2; Rom. 3:23-26).
THE ETERNAL SECURITY AND ASSURANCE OF BELIEVERS We believe that all believers are sealed by the Holy Spirit, kept by God s power, and are therefore secure in Christ forever (John 6:37-40; 10:27-30; Rom. 8:1, 38-39; 1Cor. 1:4-8; Phil. 1:6; 1Thess. 5:23-24; 1Pet. 1:5). THE TWO NATURES OF THE BELIEVER We believe that every saved person possesses two natures, with provision made for victory of the new nature (Spirit, new self, etc.) over the old nature (flesh, old self, etc.) through the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit. We also believe that all claims to the elimination of the old nature in this life are unscriptural (Rom 8:12-13; 2Cor. 5:17; Gal. 5:16-25; Eph. 4:22-24; Col. 3:10; 1Pet. 1:14-16; 1John 3:5-9). PERSONAL SEPARATION We believe that scripture teaches that our assurance of salvation is not a license to sin, but that we should live in such a manner as not to disgrace our Savior and Lord. God commands separation from all religious apostasy, and all sinful pleasures and practices (2Tim. 3:1-5; Rom. 6:1-14; 12:1-2; 13: 13-14; 14:13; Gal. 5:13; Titus 2:11-15; 1John 2:15-17; 2John 9-11; 2Cor. 6:14; 7:1). THE CHURCH We believe that the church, which is the body and the espoused bride of Christ, is a spiritual organism, pure, being made up of all true believers of the Church Age. We believe that the local church is God s primary tool for His work. We believe as an organization, it is impure, being composed of believers and unbelievers claiming to belong to Him. Also, the establishment and continuance of local churches is clearly taught and defined in the New Testament scriptures (Eph. 1:22-23; 5:25-27; 1Cor. 12:1214; 2Cor. 11:2; Acts 14:27; 20:17, 28-32; 1Tim. 3:1-13; Titus 1:5-11). DISPENSATIONALISM We believe in the Dispensational (in contrast to Covenant) view of Bible interpretation. 1. This view follows naturally from a literal, historical, and grammatical interpretation of scripture. Literally, this view states that there are distinct periods of time, called dispensations, distinguished by additional revelation to man in each dispensation, and new responsibilities for man in the rule of life in each dispensation. Throughout time God s nature remains unchanged, thus moral right and wrong are the same for all dispensations. 2. We hold that the church and Israel are totally separate. Thus, the rules, conditions, and promises given to Israel and those given to the Church are distinct and separate. 3. We hold that the Church began at Pentecost, practices Baptism and the Lord s Supper as ordinances, and looks forward to Christ s return as stated under THE SECOND ADVENT OF CHRIST (Matt. 28:19-20; John 15:25; Acts 2:41-42; 18:8; Rom. 9:4; 1Cor. 10:32; 11:23-26; Gal. 3:19,25; 5:18). MARRIAGE We believe marriage was ordained by God at creation as a lifelong, exclusive covenant relationship, not just a contract between two people, the union between one man and one woman as biologically defined by their natural birth. We believe that God intends sexual intimacy to only occur between a man and a woman who are married to each other. We believe that God has commanded that no intimate sexual activity be engaged in outside of a marriage between a man and a woman. We believe that any form of sexual immorality, such as adultery, fornication, homosexuality, bisexual conduct, bestiality, incest,
pornography or any attempt to change one s sex, or disagreement with one s biological sex, is sinful and offensive to God. (Gen. 2:24-25; Ex. 20:14, 17, 22:19; Lev. 18:22-23, 20:13, 15-16; Matt. 19:4-6, 9; Rom. 1:18-31; I Cor. 6:9-10, 15-20; I Tim. 1:8-11; Jude 7). We believe that God created the human race male and female and that all conduct with the intent to adopt a gender other than one s birth gender is immoral and therefore sin (Gen. 1:27; Deut. 22:5). Christian marriage is a representation of Christ s relationship to His church. There are to be mutual love, faithfulness and a servant attitude on both sides. We believe that in order to preserve the function and integrity of the church as the local Body of Christ, and to provide a biblical role model to the church members and the community, it is imperative that all persons employed by the church in any capacity, or who serve as volunteers, should abide by and agree to this Statement on Marriage and Sexuality and conduct themselves accordingly. We also believe that children are a blessing from the Lord. Thus, all human life is sacred and worthy of protection from the moment of conception. Genesis 1:26-28; 2:24; Psalm 127 & 128; 139:13-16; Matthew 19:1-10; I Corinthians 6:9-11; Ephesians 5:22-33; Hebrew 13:4. DIVORCE The biblical teaching on divorce is quite straightforward. The starting point is that God hates divorce (Mal 2:16). Marriage is the foundation of godly society, so any attack on marriage is an attack on the foundation of society. (Mk 10:8-9). Divorce is treason against the basic institution of society. This does not mean that divorce is totally forbidden. Jesus explained that God understands human weakness, so He allows divorce in certain circumstances. Moses allowed divorce for hardness of heart (Matt 19:8). In the scriptures, there are two grounds for divorce. A person has grounds for divorce if their marriage partner commits adultery or engages in other immoral sexual activity. (Matt 5:32), (Mark 10:11), (Matt 19:9). All forms of sexual immorality are grounds for divorce, because they break the marriage union. The second ground for divorce is willful desertion by a non-christian spouse. Paul addressed the problem that arises when one of a married couple becomes a Christian. (1 Cor. 7:12, 13). Being married to an unbeliever is not grounds for divorce, because the unbelieving spouse is sanctified by the faith of the believing spouse (1 Cor. 7:14). However, Paul goes on to say, But if the unbeliever leaves, let him do so. A believing man or woman is not bound in such circumstances; God has called us to live in peace (1 Cor. 7:15). ORDINANCES OF THE CHURCH We believe that there are two ordinances commanded of believers, these being Baptism and the Lord s Supper. Relating to baptism, we believe: 1. It is for believers who have already been regenerated through salvation. Thus, the practice does not contribute to the saving process of the believer. 2. It is practiced by immersion (Matt. 28:19-20; Acts 8:25-40) Relating to the Lord s Supper, we believe:
1. It is a memorial to Christ s atoning sacrifice. The elements used are not transformed, nor do they carry any special dispensation of grace. 2. It is open to all believers, as Christ, not the local church, is the host of the memorial (1Cor. 11:23-32). THE MINISTRY AND SPIRITUAL GIFTS 1. We believe that spiritual gifts (such as teaching or mercy) are a supernatural ability to serve in Christ s church. We also believe that every believer is given a spiritual gift or gifts with which to glorify God and build up the Body of Christ (1Pet. 4:10-11; 1Cor. 12:7, 12; 14:26) 2. We believe the Bible teaches there are some temporary gifts that have ceased. a. The first group of temporary gifts was associated with the revelation of New Testament truth and includes such gifts as apostles (apostolic authority) and prophets (revelation of The Faith, or Scripture), (Eph. 2:19-22; 4:11-12; Jude 3) b. The second temporary group is called the sign gifts. These include gifts such as tongues, interpretation of tongues, miracles, and healings. They were initially given to authenticate the message and ministry of the Apostles. Once the authenticity of God s message was established the sign gifts ceased from normative use (Mk. 16:14-20; 1Cor. 13:8-10; Heb. 2:3-4) 3. We believe God still heals and still performs miracles, but it is our understanding that He does not use healers or miracle workers in the first century sense. He performs both in accord with His sovereign will and in response to the prayers of faith offered by His people (1Cor. 12:11) MISSIONS We believe that it is the obligation of all believers to make disciples by proclaiming the Gospel to all people and then discipling all who believe (Matt. 28:18-20; Mark 16:15; Acts 1:8; 2Cor. 5:19-20). THE SECOND ADVENT OF CHRIST We believe in that Blessed Hope the personal, imminent, pretribulation and pre-millennial coming of the Lord Jesus Christ to remove all believers from the world (rapture). We also believe in His post-tribulation return to earth, with His bride (the Church), to establish His millennial kingdom (1Cor. 15:50-58; 1Thess. 1:10; 4:13-18; 5:9; Rev. 3:10; Zech. 14:4-11; Rev. 19:11-16; 20:1-6). THE ETERNAL STATE We believe in the bodily resurrection of the just and the unjust, the everlasting conscious suffering of the lost in hell, and the fellowship of the saved in heaven. We believe that the souls of the redeemed go to be with the Lord, where in conscious bliss they await the first resurrection. At the first resurrection the spirit and soul are united with a new body to be glorified forever with the Lord (Lk. 23:43; Rev. 20:4-6; 2Cor. 5:8; Phil. 1:23; 3:21; 1Thess. 4:16-17). We believe that the souls of unbelievers remain, after death, in conscious misery until the second resurrection. At the second resurrection the soul and body are reunited and shall appear at the Great White Throne Judgment. They shall then be cast into the Lake of Fire, not to be annihilated, but to suffer everlasting conscious punishment (Lk. 16:19-26; Matt. 25:41-46; 1Thess. 1:7-9; Jude 6-7; Mark 9:4-8; Rev. 20:11-15).
