St. Scholastica Faith Formation Staff Pastor Rev. Norbert Raszeja, CR x126 Parochial Vicar Fr. Mark Cote Director of Parish Faith Formation Beth Cartner Religious Education Assistant Renee Dyja Youth Minister Jennifer Michalek-Olson RCIA Coordinator (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Shawn Denning x x x x130 Our Catechetical Purpose We Believe, as stated in the church document, To Teach As Jesus Did, that the purpose of our catechetical ministry is to proclaim authentically and fully the message of Jesus Christ, to foster an understanding of and build community in all areas of life, and to encourage service to each other for the good of all. We Believe that you have entrusted your children to us to deepen the Faith you have given them as parents. We Believe that without your cooperation, such as, attending parent meetings, celebrating the Eucharist and other Sacraments together, and reinforcing Christian values in your homes, we can do very little to help your child grow in faith as they journey with you. We Believe that the goal of Religious Education through formation is to make us aware of the action of God in our lives, both within us and outside of us; that Religious Formation is faith brought to understanding. Therefore we will work with you to awaken this awareness in your children and encourage them to gradually accept responsibility for their own Christian development, as they are able. Goals of Religious Education The goals of our Religious Education program are to be present to our children, young people and adults and give them the opportunity to learn the teachings of Christ and His church; to inspire the faith community of children and adults to personalize their Catholic faith and make it a part of their lives; to foster parent participation in the formal Religious Education of their children; to develop a Christian spirit and sense of worth among our Religious Education students; and to 3

Parish Faith Formation Dear Parents, Welcome to the Religious Education year! We look forward to providing opportunities for children and parents to know God better, deepen their relationship with God and see God s presence in their lives. The formation of your children in faith was promised by you and the faith community at baptism. Parents witness faith through prayer at home, active participation at Mass, and community building. Please help us to continue that faith formation during our Religious Education (RE) sessions by bringing your children to class on time with regular attendance, insure that books/folders and any additional items are brought to each session. We are blessed to have many dedicated volunteers who are willing to give of their time and talents to assist in the religious formation of your children. Our catechists (religion teachers) are anxious to share their faith with your children, but please know that without your commitment at home, catechist efforts will be in vain. This handbook is provided to share essential information about our Religious Education curriculum, policies and procedures. Please take the time to review this handbook so that you will be familiar with the happenings and expectations of the year. Please see the Acknowledgement Form at the back of the handbook. This form needs to be carefully read, signed and returned at RE orientation. It is important to keep you updated on RE, parish, and Church happenings. We will be communicating with you throughout the year via our monthly Family RE Newsletter, , and flyers. Please be sure the RE office has your current address, phone number and home address. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child s or your own faith formation. Sincerely in Christ, Beth Cartner Director of Parish Faith Formation x117 bcartner@stscholasticaparish.org 4

Admission & Program Policy Admission Policy We accept all children in grades 1-8. (Provisions are made for children out of grade level and who have not been baptized or received the Eucharist). Baptismal Certificate is required at registration. If your child has not been baptized or received the Eucharist, grade level placement will be determined by the Director with the parents. Programs GRADES 1-8 Home is recognized as the primary faith provider for children. Our program supports you in your efforts to share your faith, teach the doctrines of our Catholic faith, study Scripture and participate in prayer, Liturgy and Sacramental celebrations. We also provide opportunities for Christian service projects. We expect that families actively participate in Sunday Masses and share RE lessons together at home each week. CHILDREN S LITURGY OF THE WORD (CLOW) - Children ages 4-4th grade are invited to the gym to hear the Word and a reflection at their level during the 10 am Mass on selected Sundays. PROTECTING GOD S CHILDREN DIOCESAN SEX ABUSE POLICY The Diocese of Joliet requires that all catechists have criminal background checks and attend a VIRTUS Protecting God s Children session. Pursuant to state law, we are required to report suspected physical and sexual child abuse, and we will also follow Diocesan policy on such matters. 7 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION (RE) PROGRAM Parents are the primary religious educators of their children through their example of daily living. With the assistance of parents, catechists and children in the St. Scholastica Religious Education program are involved in a very special process of relating their experience of daily living to our Catholic Christian traditions and growing in their relationship with God. This life-centered approach, to teach as Jesus taught, provides the ground work of our Catholic faith formation. Opportunities of prayer, Scripture, doctrine, service, retreats, and liturgical celebration appropriate to one s learning level will augment the faith passed on to the students by their parents. COMMUNICATION is a primary source of communication. If your address has changed since registration, please contact us with the correct address. If you are not receiving s, please contact our office immediately. If you have no , a paper copy will be given to one of your children. We also send home a monthly RE Family Newsletter. Parents are asked to please examine their children s RE folders weekly for any additional announcements. Please use these folders to return information to us in a timely manner. DIOCESAN REQUIREMENTS The Joliet Diocese requires that all parents are given access to the following documents: Policy Regarding Sexual Abuse of Minors Parent Guide: Understanding & Preventing Child Sexual Abuse Parent Guide: Internet Safety for Children & Teens These documents can be found on our parish website, Click on Parish Faith Formation/More Details under Religious Education. The Diocesan Documents link is at the top right. A ACKNOWLEDGEMENT FORM is included in this Handbook. After reading all pamphlets and this Handbook, please sign the ACKNOWLEDGEMENT FORM and return it when you attend RE Orientation. CATECHISTS Our teachers in the Religious Education program are called Catechists. A catechist is one who echoes the Word of God. Our catechists are all volunteers who freely share their time, talent and faith with the children of our parish. Please support them in prayer through the coming year as well as any time they may need assistance in their classroom. RE OFFICE VOLUNTEERS We have several adults who volunteer their time to help with attendance, office assistance and fill in as the second adult in a RE class if a catechist is absent. SACRAMENTAL PROGRAMS We follow the guidelines of the Diocese of Joliet, when preparing children for Sacraments. Children wishing to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation/Eucharist must have completed at least two consecutive years of religious formation before they become eligible to receive the Sacraments (begin preparation in first grade to celebrate the Sacraments in 2nd grade). Candidates for the Sacrament of Confirmation begin their preparation in 6th grade and are Confirmed the Fall of their freshman year. Please contact the Director of Parish Faith Formation if you have an older child seeking a sacrament. REGISTRATION Registration forms for the upcoming school year will be sent home to all families as soon as they are available in the spring. Class assignments will be made on a first-come, first-serve basis. All Families: please take into consideration any activities (i.e. soccer, music lessons, volleyball, basketball, etc.) to avoid scheduling conflicts with the Religious Education classes. The registration form, and baptismal certificate MUST be on file to complete the registration process. 7

CLASS CANCELLATION Emergency Closing Information can be heard on these radio stations: WMAQ, WGN, WBBM, WLS, or television stations: Channel 2, 5, 7 and 9, Fox 32 and CLTV. You can also go online to the Emergency Closing Center at: to confirm if classes are cancelled. NO phone calls will be made to the Religious Education families concerning a cancellation of classes due to weather issues. If there is opportunity, a phone message will be put on the Religious Education Office phone and can be checked at ATTENDANCE The children attend approximately RE classes per year. Regular attendance is expected. Each child should be seated in the classroom by the start time. It is recommended that parents schedule all extracurricular activities at times not conflicting with Religious Education classes. In case of illness or other serious reasons, parents are requested to call the Religious Education Office, In the event the student misses four classes, parents will be contacted by phone; five absences will necessitate a parent conference. Make-up work under the direction of the parent is required for each absence. In the event that a student is absent more than five times for reasons which are absolutely necessary, the Director/Associate and the parents can meet to plan a make-up program. DISCIPLINE Christian behavior is expected at all grade levels at all times. This includes entering and leaving the building as well as time spent in the classroom. All students will be respectful toward each other, the catechists, and the property of St. Scholastica. The St. Scholastica Religious Education Covenant of Conduct form is located at the back of this handbook. Please take the time to read it carefully and review with your child. Unacceptable behavior will first be handled at the catechist level, and may include a parent phone call. If the problem persists, the student will meet with the RE Director/ Assistant. An additional incident will include a parent conference & removal from class. Serious misconduct will result in a parent conference with the Director, Catechist, and possibly the Pastor before the child would be allowed to return to class. LOCKDOWNS, FIRE OR SEVERE WEATHER All Religious Education employees have been trained in emergency procedures. They will be doing their best to ensure that all students are being held in a safe location on campus. Our goal is safe care, custody, and accountability of children. In a Lock Down, we will not be able to answer incoming phone calls or make outside calls. Within minutes we will be assisted by police, who will secure the neighboring streets and the building perimeter. Students will be kept inside locked classrooms. No one will be allowed to leave the classrooms/secure areas on campus until the lock down is lifted. All students and faculty/staff will remain in the lock down mode until the police department lifts the lockdown. When the lock down is lifted, parents may come to the parish to pick up their children and must sign their child out. In case of building evacuation because of fire, parents must sign child out from the catechist. Fire drill practice will occur at the beginning of the Religious Education year. In the event of severe weather, students may be picked up and signed out from the main St. Scholastica school entrance. 8

FAMILY S PARTICIPATION IN FAITH FORMATION By means of personal contact, meetings, courses and adult catechesis directed toward parents, the Christian Community must help parents assume their responsibility of educating their children in the faith. ---General Directory for Catechesis 227 Catechists supplement, in a more formal way, the education in faith that occurs informally in the home. It is important for parents and catechists to support and encourage each other. It is asked that families of children and youth in our program be supportive of our Faith Formation programs in the following ways: Talk about faith with your child. Share your own faith story with your child and times you felt closest to God. Show an interest each week in what is happening in class. Spend time with your child on their chapters. Make some of the activities in the chapters a vital part of your family time. With older children, discuss the topic of each chapter & how it applies to their lives. Attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days and receive the Sacraments frequently. Your example speaks louder than words. Decide how to put the Gospel into action during the week. Ensure that necessary materials: books, folders, pencils, etc. are brought to each class session. Make sure to introduce yourself to your child s Catechist and stay in contact through the program year. Pray at home, teach your children to pray in their own words, as well as to learn the traditional prayers of our faith. Our prayer memorization of each grade follows this page. The prayers can be found in the back of your child s textbook. Join your child in participating in service opportunities that reach out to others in need. Read the RE Family Newsletter each month. Actively participate as a family in Parish activities. Read Diocesan Pastoral Policy Regarding Sexual Abuse of Minors, Parent Guide: Understanding & Preventing Child Sexual Abuse, Parent Guide: Internet Safety for Children & Teens. Discuss the policies in this handbook with your children that pertain to them and return the required signed pages to your catechist by the due date (last page of this handbook). Please sign and return the last page of this handbook when you attend RE orientation. 9
