JUST JESUS The Book of Hebrews Lesson Thirteen T EXT Now the first covenant had regulations for worship and also an earthly sanctuary. A tabernacle was set up. In its first room were the lampstand, the table and the consecrated bread; this was called the Holy Place. Behind the second curtain was a room called the Most Holy Place, which had the golden altar of incense and the gold-covered ark of the covenant. This ark contained the gold jar of manna, Aaron's staff that had budded, and the stone tablets of the covenant. Above the ark were the cherubim of the Glory, overshadowing the atonement cover. But we cannot discuss these things in detail now. When everything had been arranged like this, the priests entered regularly into the outer room to carry on their ministry. But only the high priest entered the inner room, and that only once a year, and never without blood, which he offered for himself and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance. The Holy Spirit was showing by this that the way into the Most Holy Place had not yet been disclosed as long as the first tabernacle was still standing. This is an illustration for the present time, indicating that the gifts and sacrifices being offered were not able to clear the conscience of the worshiper. They are only a matter of food and drink and various ceremonial washings-- external regulations applying until the time of the new order. When Christ came as high priest of the good things that are already here, he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not man-made, that is to say, not a part of this creation. He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, having obtained eternal redemption. The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God! Hebrews 9:1-14 C ONTEXT The Letter to the Hebrews isn t actually a letter at all, but a 1 st century sermon that was written and sent to a small house church, probably in the city of Rome following the increased Hebrews, L13 (9:1-14), p. 1

persecution of 65 A.D. under Nero. The recipients were likely Roman Jews who had become Christians, and the author knew them personally. In 9:1-10:18 explains the ways in which the Son s sacrifice can be shown to be better than the old Levitical sacrifices. This brings the discussion of the superiority of Christ s priesthood to a conclusion. The superiority of Christ s offering was superior because: (1) The place was of the offering was in heaven, not earth (9:11; 23-25; 10:12-130; (2) The blood of the offering was Christ s own blood rather than that of animals (9:12-28); (3) The offering of the Christ, theheavenly high priest was eternal, unlike the Levitical sacrifices that had to be repeated (9:25-26; 10:1-18). (Adapted from George Guthrie) The essential context for this section of Hebrews is that of Leviticus 16 where the procedure for the Day of Atonement in laid out. Key things: v. 2 Can t enter the Holy of Holies whenever you want; only 1 time per year and then only the High Priest v Bull for High Priest s sins; 2 goats (1 scapegoat, 1 offering goat); 1 ram for people s sins v Blood of the bull and offering goat is sprinkled on the Ark in the Holy of Holies and then the altar to cover sins of Aaron and the people (animal dies for sin s of Aaron and people, thus sin resulting in death is upheld) v Scapegoat is brought and sins of people are confessed over it and then symbolically takes them with it as it is released far into the dessert v This is to be a lasting ordinance, done once per year Hebrews, L13 (9:1-14), p. 2

S UBTEXT Our author continues this contrasting of Christ s ministry with the ministry of the Levitical priest with regard to worship. He reminds them that things had to be just so in the tabernacle. Doing so imposed a series of divinely established barriers between the worshiper and God everything was designed to keep the people away from God. Notice the following: Only the High Priest could enter, He could only do it once per year, He could never do it without blood be sacrificed In addition, the gifts and sacrifices being offered were not able to clear the conscience of the worshiper. This refers to a decisive cleansing, a permanent new condition. The word conscience is used in a very particular way here: It describes the whole interior self; it reflects upon the relationship of the whole person to God. In the context of the worship of God, it is the smiting, burdened conscience that is in view, which effectively keeps a worshiper from God. In Hebrews, the function of the conscience is not to discriminate between right and wrong but to remember the sin that separates a worshiper from God. It exposed the truth that defilement extends to the heart as well as to the body, and that it erects a barrier to the living God. The inability of the gifts and sacrifices offered on the Day of Atonement and through daily sacrifices to achieve a decisive cleansing of the conscience was, therefore, a serious weakness. Moreover, the deficiency affected all of the worshipers priest and people alike. Lane, Hebrews, p So we see that there were two more severe limitations of the old administration of the Covenant of Grace with regard to worship: First, it severely restricted the access of the worshiper to God (and thus was only provisional); Second, the sacrifices offered were inadequate to provide decisive cleansing (again emphasizing the temporary nature of the covenant.) When Christ came as high priest of the good things that are already here, he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not man-made, that is to say, not a part of this creation. This entire section makes three major points: 1. Jesus as our high priest entered the heavenly sanctuary (v.11). Hebrews, L13 (9:1-14), p. 3

2. Jesus as our high priest obtained eternal salvation for us through offering himself as our sacrifice (v. 12). 3. By offering himself as our sacrifice, Jesus as our high priest has decisively cleansed the conscience (vv ). The author is intent on making a contrast between the preceding paragraph, in which the worship regulations of the Old Covenant are laid out (God is separated from the worshipers, only the high priest once a year can enter God s presence, and then only with blood), and the work of Christ described in this paragraph. Jesus, like the merely human high priests, is described as going into the very center of the tabernacle (the Most Holy Place/Holy of Holies) on behalf of his people. However, unlike the human high priests (described in 8:1-9:10): The location of his priestly ministry was not an earthly tabernacle (cf. 9:1) but the heavenly sanctuary (v. 12a). The means by which he approached God was not the blood of animals but by means of his own blood (v. 12b). He was not obligated to enter the Most Holy Place year by year ; he entered once-for-all (v. 12a) The result of his priestly action was not the limited recurring cleansing of the annual atonement ritual, but the obtaining of eternal redemption (v. 12a). from Lane, Hebrews, p. 122 all by his own blood is a metaphor. What is in view is not what we thinking of biologically as blood, but rather Christ s sacrificial death on the cross. Blood is a sort of theological shorthand for death being inflicted on someone due to their own sin as the Old Covenant required. In this case the death was inflicted due to our sin, instead of Christ s. Statements like ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean and cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death remind us that sin is more than mere brokenness or even rebellion against God. Sin is also defilement; it makes us dirty. Like strenuous physical labor, even when we have stopped the action we bear the filth of the deed on us. Christ s blood is what is able to clean this off of us. The reason why this can now be decisively done is because of the quality of the sacrifice being offered: Christ s unblemished life. Hebrews, L13 (9:1-14), p. 4

W HERE D O WE GO FROM HERE The Great Vigil of Easter The Lighting of the Paschal Candle (BOCP, adapted) Dear friends in Christ: On this most holy night, in which our Lord Jesus passed over from death to life, the Church invites her members, dispersed throughout the world, to gather in vigil and prayer. For this is the Passover of the Lord, in which, by hearing his Word and celebrating his Sacraments, we share in his victory over death. It is truly right and good, always and everywhere, with our whole heart and mind and voice, to praise you, the invisible, almighty, and eternal God, and your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the true Paschal Lamb, who at the feast of the Passover paid for us the debt of Adam s sin, and by his blood delivered your faithful people. This is the night, when you brought our fathers, the children of Israel, out of bondage in Egypt, and led them through the Red Sea on dry land. This is the night, when all who believe in Christ are delivered from the gloom of sin, and are restored to grace and holiness of life. This is the night, when Christ broke the bonds of death and hell, and rose victorious from the grave. How wonderful and beyond our knowing, O God, is your mercy and loving-kindness to us, that to redeem a slave, you gave a Son. How holy is this night, when wickedness is put to flight, and sin is washed away. It restores innocence to the fallen, and joy to those who mourn. It casts out pride and hatred, and brings peace and concord. How blessed is this night, when earth and heaven are joined and man is reconciled to God. Amen. Hebrews, L13 (9:1-14), p. 5

Only a fraction of the present body of professing Christians are solidly appropriating the justifying work of Christ in their lives. Many have so light an apprehension of God's holiness and of the extent and guilt of their sin that consciously they see little need for justification, although below the surface of their lives they are deeply guilt-ridden and insecure. Many others have a theoretical commitment to this doctrine, but in their day-to-day existence they rely on their sanctification for justification, in the Augustinian manner, drawing their assurance of acceptance with God from their sincerity, their past experience of conversion, their recent religious performance or the relative infrequency of their conscious, willful disobedience. Few know enough to start each day with a thoroughgoing stand upon Luther's platform: you are accepted, looking outward in faith and claiming the wholly alien righteousness of Christ as the only ground for acceptance, relaxing in that quality of trust which will produce increasing sanctification as faith is active in love and gratitude. Richard Lovelace Hebrews, L13 (9:1-14), p. 6
