1 Jesus the Messiah (Mark 8:29) Five hundred twenty-eight times the person named Jesus is connected to the word Christ in the New Testament. Christ means the anointed one. The Old Testament Hebrew word with the same meaning is Messiah. Throughout the Old Testament, God repeatedly promised to send his specially appointed rescuer for the human race. He anointed one to carry out our divine deliverance from certain godly destruction. The Lord didn t just repeat the same promise over and over but added more and more details to identify the Promised One when he came. In fact, there are more than three hundred prophecies about the Messiah. When Jesus asked the twelve apostles, Who do you say I am? Peter blurted out, You are the Christ (Mark 8:29). He was convinced that Jesus was the Promised One, the Messiah. Little did Peter or the others realize how limited their understanding of the fulfilled prophecies was at this point. The evidence would continue to grow as their eyes were opened to more of Scripture. The New Testament writers inspired by the Holy Spirit and convinced from Scripture intimately connected Jesus and the Christ. They frequently called him Jesus Christ, Jesus the Messiah. They believed Jesus was the Messiah not just by blind faith or simply because of human experiences with him but because of Scripture. The Old Testament testified to Jesus followers that he had to be the Messiah. Matthew s gospel alone has 29 prophecies connected to Jesus, but that is less than 10 percent of the total. The evidence that Jesus is the Messiah from prophecies alone is overwhelming, not to mention the words of God and angels and the miracles Jesus performed. With Peter we too confess, You are the Christ. Father, we praise you for promising and sending the Messiah into the world to be our Savior. Amen.
2 Is Jesus God? (Matthew 16:17) If a skeptic asked you, Why do you believe that Jesus is God? What would you say? There are three basic reasons from Scripture for believing Jesus is God. Today we look at one. At the baptism of Jesus, we are told that a voice from heaven said, This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased (Matthew 3:17). God the Father personally and directly communicated the true identity of Jesus. Three years later, Jesus revealed his glory on a mountaintop, and a voice said, This is my Son, whom I love (Matthew 17:5). The Father reaffirmed his previous statement. Probably shortly before this incident, Jesus asked the disciples who they thought he was. Peter blurted out, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God (Matthew 16:16). Jesus responded, Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven (verse 17). Peter and the apostles reached this conclusion of faith because the Father revealed it to them. They heard the voice of the Father, saw the miracles, realized the fulfilled prophecies, and listened to Jesus teaching. They believed Jesus was God, and Jesus himself affirmed their confession. John wrote, We are in him who is true even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life (1 John 5:20). The Father, the Bible, and Jesus himself all say the same thing Jesus is God s Son. There are many passages in the Bible that affirm this truth. It is clear: Jesus is God. The belief that Jesus is true God, who came here to earth, is based on solid, God-given evidence. Believe it. Father, thank you for revealing your Son to me through the Scriptures. Amen.
3 The Son of Man (John 3:13) What title did Jesus use most frequently for himself? He identified himself 81 times with this term in the gospels: the Son of Man. He used the word the. He is set apart from every other human being. Yet he loved to identify himself with us as a human. He had a human nature just as we do, with one exception he had no sinful nature. Jesus said to Nicodemus, No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven the Son of Man (John 3:13). The Son of Man didn t go into heaven and then return to earth. He simply came from heaven. He was always there because he was the Son of God and now is also the Son of Man. The Messiah is the Son of Man. Like every human, he faced temptation. Like every human, he dealt with the limitations of a human body: hunger, fatigue, pain, yes, even death. He walked in our world and lived in it. He never grumbled about his lot or mission in life. He defeated every temptation and lived a perfect life. He did it all for us, for you. Are you trying to meet some kind of standard so God will accept you or keep you as his own? Give it up! You can t do it; Jesus already did it for you. He came from heaven and as the Son of Man lived, died, and rose again for you. The Messiah, the Son of Man, has come. Get out of the spiritual rat race and be in the grace of God through the Son of Man, Jesus. Son of Man, forgive me when I think I can live a life good enough to become your child. Keep me in you. Amen.
4 My Father (Luke 2:49) How aware were you of life s complexities at age 12? I was in seventh grade. Quite honestly, I wasn t too aware of anything outstanding. How about you? Only one incident is recorded in Scripture about Jesus from baby to preacher. It contains the first recorded words of the Messiah. Jesus, Joseph, and Mary had traveled to Jerusalem for the yearly Passover Feast. After the joyous celebration, Mary and Joseph, along with relatives and friends, started back to Nazareth. Later, Joseph and Mary realized Jesus wasn t with them. Frantic, they returned to Jerusalem to search. Eventually they found him in the temple. He was listening to Bible scholars and asking questions. In answer to Mary s question of why, Jesus said, Didn t you know I had to be in my Father s house? (Luke 2:49). In my Father s house already at age 12, Jesus was aware of his identity. Twenty-one years later, during the Passover celebration, Jesus said, In my Father s house are many rooms.... I am going there (John 14:2). Nine verses later he said, Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me (verse 11). Over a period of at least 21 years, Jesus made the claim that God was his Father. Some thought he was insane to make that outlandish statement. Some thought he was possessed by a demon. Some were puzzled. Others were led to believe. We reflect on the Messiah s words. We consider his miracles as signs from the Father, authenticating his claim and teaching. We ponder the prophecies fulfilled. Greatest of all, we try to comprehend his resurrection and the ascension to heaven. Make no mistake; he is the Messiah sent by his Father. Lord, thank you for giving me so much evidence that Jesus and the Father are one. Amen.
5 Lost Are Saved (Luke 19:10) We hear a news report. A child or a family is missing in the mountains out west. A massive and intensive search is organized. Most lost people realize they are in trouble. But people who are spiritually lost don t always realize how lost their condition before God really is. For those living in the cesspool of sin, being lost is normal and natural. In our world, living for the here and now is typical. We are surrounded by selfish attitudes. It s easy to believe that we re better than others and that God will surely give us some credit for the good we ve done in our lives. But we too are lost from God. Born with a sinful nature, we are not naturally connected to him. No one can survive in the spiritual wilderness to find his or her way back to God. Every human being is in the same lost condition. The Messiah s mission is captured in the words spoken to a lost man named Zacchaeus. Jesus the Messiah said, The Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost (Luke 19:10). He entered the world to save the lost. The guilt of all our wrongs was placed on him. He accomplished the perfection that was so obviously missing in our lives. He came to restore people to a spiritual relationship with the Father. The Messiah s mission was to save the lost. No matter how badly you have messed up your life Jesus came to save the lost. No matter how long you have lived without God Jesus came for the lost. No matter how guilty you may feel and be Jesus came for the lost. The Messiah s mission was to save you. Messiah, without you I am lost. Thank you for finding me, saving me, and bringing me to faith. Amen.
