Shreeraj Mohanty with Mr. Aniket Deb Roy On the evening of 15th April 2017, the Diocesan Youth Fellowship Committee (DYFC) presented a musical titled He Died for me with the subtitle A musical evening to tell His story, at St. Paul's Cathedral at 6pm. The musical was directed and conceptualized by Mr. Aniket Deb Roy, Principal, St. Thomas' Day School. Rev. Shreeraj Mohanty, Youth Coordinator, welcomed the audience to St. Paul's Cathedral, followed by Revd. Simick, leading us through a time of prayer; before the programme started. The Rt. Revd. Ashoke Biswas, Bishop of Calcutta, CNI was the Chief Guest for the evening. St. Paul's Cathedral was transformed into a theatre for the evening as there was a giant LED background screen and four LED panels for the visuals created by Aaron Monnier and Osama Ahad. The monologue artists represented various characters of the Bible, and they each shared their feelings about the death of Jesus Christ. Each monologue artist was followed by a song, which cemented the understanding of the monologue. The monologue artists represented Pilate, Caiaphas, Mother Mary, Peter, Roman Centurion, Thomas, Mary Magdalene, Joseph of Arimathea, Judas and Cathy, a modern day believer of Jesus Christ. Each monologue artist, in full character, transported the audience to the foot of the cross, helped us introspect and realize that truly He died for each one of us. Each song hammered in its meaning just the way the soldiers hammered in the nails into the hands of Jesus. There were a variety of songs consisting of old popular numbers, new modern worship songs and duets. The message of Lent could successfully be planted into the hearts of the people through this musical. Continued on : Pg.3 1 January - April 2017

Paul, writing to Timothy, describes the Church as the pillar and support of the Truth (1 Timothy 3:15). While opinions and different ideas and understandings need to be welcomed, accepted and respected, we are called to something much greater. We are called to be the pillar and support of the truth and ambassadors of the truth which we have known and realized in our Lord and Saviour Jesus as He is the Way, the Truth and Life and in whom alone we have life in its fullness in its truest sense. We are given the promise that We'll know the truth and the truth will make us free.( John 8:32) I n H i s h i g h p r i e s t l y p r a y e r a t Gethsemane, Jesus prayed: "Sanctify them in the Truth; Your Word is Truth." (John 17:17) Jesus prays this before He prays for unity. The Church need to endeavour again to be a voice of the Truth and speak up to take up the cudgels for truth. Social media has given each one of us a platform to be a media outlet. Let us not i n o u r o v e r e n t h u s i a s m indiscriminately share false stories and in so doing end up spreading lies, DR. We congratulate her on her success and pray to God for an even more bright future for her. deception and hurt but rather share more of the most important, relevant and pragmatic truth of all that is the Truth of our God and His salvation what we may already have been doing as Ambassadors for the Real Truth. Post truth certainly is not the end of the story and cannot be the finality. Let us focus more on Biblical Truth in our preaching, teaching and living the teachings of Christ, the uniqueness of Christ, the power and work of the Holy Spirit as manifest in the Church and individual lives in the ever abiding presence of our Risen Lord. These are what we cherish, we treasure and we could vouch for in the present times. Post truth can never be the ultimate truth but we are called to be the upholders of the eternal truth that we have known as believers who have acknowledged Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour. That is what we are looking forward to, which perpetually enliven, inspire, revive, recharge, energise and enthuse us to be His disciples. Thus moving forward we pray together, Your kingdom come and strive together as co workers with our Creator for a society which is just, in peace, loving and inclusive. 11 DWFCS PROGRAMME - ANNUNCIATION OF BLESSED VIRGIN MARY On 25th March, 2017 the Diocesan Women's Fellowship for Christian Service, Diocese of Calcutta, CNI observed the annunciation of Blessed Virgin Mary at St. Paul's Cathedral, from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. A total of 145 ladies from different Pastorates under the Diocese of Calcutta attended this programme. The programme started with a opening prayer offered by Rev Nigel Pope, Presbyter in Charge, St Paul's Cathedral. Mrs. Bijoya Das, President, DWFCS welcomed the delegates and felicitated the guest speaker Sister Christina Sheela on behalf of DWFCS, Diocese of Calcutta. In her welcome address she mentioned the importance of the day, the day of proclaiming the prophetic voice of women by God, choosing women to be mediators. For salvation and liberation from miseries, God promised to sacrifice His only Son for us. He had chosen a woman, highly spiritual, strong, obedient to the voice of God with a mind keen to accept the plan of God. The attitude of the Blessed Virgin Mary is still a role model for us, empowering us to lead a God fearing life to seek the Blessing of God to sacrifice and offer our lives for the Kingdom cause. Sister Christina Sheela highlighted on the A one day workshop on Record keeping st and Minutes writing was held on 1 February 2017 at Bishop's House, Diocese of Calcutta, organised by DWFCS Diocese of Calcutta from am 1.30pm. This workshop was only for the Executive Committee members of the DWFCS of the Diocese of Calcutta and Diocese of Barrackpore. The workshop started with an inaugural address by the Rt. Rev. Ashoke Biswas, Ex officio, DWFCS, Diocese of Calcutta and Bishop of the Diocese of Calcutta and the Moderator's Episcopal Commissary of the Diocese of Barrackpore. In his inaugural speech Bishop emphasised on Oneness in Christ based on the Gospel of Luke 1:26 38 and said it is more than a Pre Christmas Message for all women. She highlighted some p o i n t s o n t h e character of mother Mary. 1. Great in spirituality 2. Willingness to serve God. 3. Availability for God. 4. Allowing herself to be used by God. She emphasised on the Christian attitude in the present context that all mothers should teach their children from the early age like the mother of Mary who prepared her daughter from childhood and taught how to be ready for Gods work, how to take up challenges in any situation. We see that when the Angel came, Mary did not get frightened, she was surprised, but not scared. The whole of Israel was waiting for the Messiah. Mary was also interested in the Saviour's coming and was ready to welcome Jesus. Sister Sheela challenged all the delegates with the same question, Are we ready for God's work? Are we ready to use our children for God's work? Do we teach them or get prepared to accept any challenge for God's DWFCS WORKSHOP ON RECORD KEEPING AND MINUTES WRITING Gospel of John Ch:17. Bishop mentioned the life of Jesus Christ from the childhood and how He was brought up in the Holy Family in a simple way by His committed Father and Blessed Mother. Bishop encouraged the WFCS mothers about this spiritual responsibility beyond regular Church activities like Church cleaning, furnishing, Bible study etc. Nowadays girl child trafficking is a big issue. Awareness campaign is going on at all levels but the menace is increasing day by day. At all levels in the school the girl child are being trained for self protection. But as Christians we have failed to address this issue in the Church level Adequately. Women's fellowship could take a major role to pray and work to conscientize the society towards changing the situation. WFCS ladies could be a light for them who are in crisis, like a Samaritan woman who was the first Evangelist of Jesus. Not only plan? Mary is a model for every child of God. We teach our daughters how to find a suitable groom, how to pursue a career as we are worried abut their future, their career, their health, their security physical, mental, financial etc. But are we worried about their spiritual development? Do we want to use our children for God's plan and purpose? Do our children dream for God's Kingdom? It is high time for us to look back and make proper plans for them or else we will be asked by God what we did for our children and God. Mrs. Melody D' Rosario, Secretary DWFCS proposed the vote of thanks. The programme ended with the Closing Prayer and Blessing by Rev James A. Gomez. All the participants took part in the refreshment and fellowship that followed thereafter. herself but the whole family members accepted Jesus later on. Even WFCS could become the pathfinder for those who are still illiterate at the village level to teach them, make them aware of the imminent danger they may be confronting and how to be safe and secure. Bishop Ashoke Biswas also congratulated all the new elected ladies from Barackpore and Calcutta Diocese. Mrs. Bijoya Das, President, DWFCS,Diocese of Calcutta conducted a session on Record keeping and Minutes writing, she shared with all why the minutes are needed and how to write a minute, agenda, Notice Book, etc. She also shared about the agenda for the regular meeting and also the AGM. After the detailed discussion the members shared their views regarding minutes, exchanged their minutes book and discussed with one another regarding a better future. In conclusion Mrs. Bijoya Das made an appeal to continue this process at the Pastorate level as a follow up programme. 11 January - April 2017

12 CONFIRMATION RETREAT On 25th March, 2017 a day long retreat was held for the confirmation candidates of the Diocese of Calcutta, CNI along with their parents at St. John's Church. The whole purpose was that being a community of faith it is an imperative to gather together to seek God's blessing and to consider Confirmation as a call to discipleship. It is not just forgiveness of sins and assurance of pardon, but more importantly a call to discipleship which inspires each candidate to become a follower, a disciple of Christ. The Rt Rev Ashoke Biswas, Bishop of Calcutta, CNI took the opening session on The Call i.e. the call to discipleship. 15 DIOCESE OF BARRACKPORE VISIT- OF THE RT REV ASHOKE BISWAS, BISHOP OF CALCUTTA AND MODERATOR'S EPISCOPAL COMMISSARY OF THE DIOCESE OF BARRACKPORE, CNI On April 23, 2017 The Rt Rev Ashoke Biswas, Bishop of Calcutta and Moderator's Episcopal Commissary of the Diocese of Barrackpore, CNI was the celebrant and preacher of the Sunday Worship Service at St. Bartholomew Cathedral on Bishop's Episcopal visit to the Diocese of Barrackpore. The Bengali and English congregation joined in one worship service. In the course of Bishop's sermon based on St.Thomas in the Gospel he said It may be necessary for you to be sad for a while because of the many kinds of trials you suffer. Their purpose is to prove that your faith is genuine. Even gold, which can be destroyed, is tested by fire; and so your faith, which is much precious than gold, must also be tested, so that it may endure. Then you will receive praise and glory and honour on the Day when Jesus Christ is revealed. As Easter people, who believe that Jesus Christ is Risen and up from the grave He arose, we are being challenged from today's Gospel story like Thomas, to rise along with our Risen Saviour from darkness to light, from troubles to peace, from sorrow to joy and from doubt to faith. After the Worship service there was a t i m e fo r fe l l o w s h i p a n d l i g h t refreshments. Followed by the worship service a farewell programme was held in the afternoon for the former Bishop of the Barrackpore Diocese, The Rt Rev Brojen Malakar. The Office Bearers and Heads of Institutions attended the programme. Rev David Roy conducted t h e p ro g ra m m e. After the opening prayer by Rev Miron M o n d a l, B i s h o p Brojen Malakar and B i s h o p A s h o k e Biswas, Moderators' E p i s c o p a l Commissary of the D i o c e s e o f Barrackpore, CNI were welcomed and felicitated. B i s h o p A s h o k e shared with the g a t h e r i n g h i s association with Bishop Malakar and praised him for his humility, simplicity and for shepherding t h e D i o c e s e o f Barrackpore during trials and difficult times. Bishop Malakar spoke on the Education Ministry he initiated in the Diocese of Barrackpore and his desire to have it continued and reach the unreached. Bishop Malakar is well known for his evangelistic works and to ensure that he faces no difficulty in continuing in this area, the Executive Committee headed by The Rt Rev Ashoke Biswas, Bishop of Calcutta and Moderators' Episcopal Commissary of the Diocese of Barrackpore, CNI, decided to present Bishop Malakar with a car and some allowance for this purpose. The programme ended in fellowship and Lunch. 15 January - April 2017
