2 Welcome! We re glad God has called you here today! We pray that you ll encounter God in worship, and hope that you ll be with us again soon! If you haven t met our pastor, please be sure to say hello either before or after the service. We also hope you ll stay after worship for coffee and fellowship in the Gathering rea. We love having children in worship, even if they occasionally make a joyful noise! Most services include a children s sermon and special children s bulletins. There are also activity bags by the worship space entrance that your child can use. professionally staffed nursery for infants and preschool-aged children is available during worship and the education hour for parents who need it. If you have special needs, we will do our best to help meet them. Our sound system is compatible with many hearing assistance devices. Large-print worship bulletins with the full text of the service are available from the ushers. rint copies of the scriptures and of the sermon are also available. The sermon is also on our website: If you have mobility issues, let an usher know, and communion can be brought to you. We can easily remove chairs anywhere in the worship space to provide extra room for wheelchairs and walkers. The Eucharist (Holy Communion) is celebrated every Sunday. We practice open communion, which means that all who believe Christ is truly present in this meal are welcome at the table, no questions asked. It is Christ s table, and it is Christ himself who invites you. Come forward as the ushers direct. You ll be offered the bread, the body of Christ, which you should eat as soon as you receive it. (If you need gluten-free bread, simply ask the minister, who can offer you that.) You may then drink either from the common cup, which contains wine, or take an individual cup from the tray. The individual cups in the center of the tray contain non-alcoholic grape juice. Empty cups may be placed in the tray that follows the server. Children are welcome at the Table, and we don t have a specific age requirement for communing. If you d like your child to commune, please let the pastor know. If you or your child would prefer a blessing instead of communion, please come forward with everyone else, and simply cross your arms over your chest to indicate this. Do you have a prayer need? Individual prayer is available. Simply go to the chair at the side after you commune, and someone will be there to pray with you. You may also write prayer requests in the book outside the worship space entrance. If you d like to have a number of people learn about a request quickly, you can send an to prayerchain@ctlelgin.org. 3 Gathering: The Holy Spirit assembles us as the eople of God In Holy Baptism God makes saints out of sinners. In Holy Communion God forgives the sins of all the saints. In the assembly today we give thanks for all the saints who from their labors rest, who have fought the good fight, who have gained the crown. In the same breath we petition our God for the strength to hear and to heed the admonitions of the Lord Jesus in today s gospel. Recalling that we have been sealed by the Spirit and sustained by the Savior s body and blood, we keep on keeping on as God gives us breath, to the praise of God s glory. 5 rayer of the Day Let us pray. lmighty God, you have knit your people together in one communion in the mystical body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Grant us grace to follow your blessed saints in lives of faith and commitment, and to know the inexpressible joys you have prepared for those who love you, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. men. R In the first year of King Belshazzar of Babylon, Daniel had a dream and visions of his head as he lay in bed. Then he wrote down the dream: I, Daniel, saw in my vision by night the four winds of heaven stirring up the great sea, and four great beasts came up out of the sea, different from one another. s for me, Daniel, my spirit was troubled within me, and the visions of my head terrified me. I approached one of the attendants to ask him the truth concerning all this. In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God s own people, to the praise of his glory. I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, 5

We believe in one God, the Father, the lmighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. Day by day you shower us with blessings. s you have raised us to new life in Christ, give us glad and generous hearts, ready to praise you and to respond to those in need, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. men. reface We do indeed give you our thanks and praise, O God, for by your great power you have called us to a rich hope and pledged us a glorious inheritance among the saints. In time before dreaming you sent the wind to stir up the sea of chaos and bring forth the earth. Through your law and prophets you promised us that your Kingdom would belong forever to those who embraced your holiness. Through your son, Jesus Christ, you proclaimed a day when the hungry will feast and the mourners laugh. When he was killed on the cross you raised him from the dead and seated him at your right hand. In him you give us a spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that we might know that hope to which you have called us and embody the fullness of Christ who fills all in all. Therefore, with hearts full of gratitude, we sing joyfully, giving thanks to you, our Father, at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Nursery ssistant Commemorations for the Week 16 Sunday, November 3, 2013 Martín de orres, renewer of society, died 1639 Martín was the son of a Spanish knight and a freed black slave from anama. s a lay brother in the Order of reachers (Dominicans), he engaged in many charitable works in Lima, eru. He founded an orphanage, a hospital, and a clinic for cats and dogs. Thursday, November 7 John Christian Frederick Heyer, died 1873; Bartholomaeus Ziegenbalg, died 1719; Ludwig Nommensen, died 1918; missionaries Heyer was the first missionary sent out by merican Lutherans. fter teaching at Gettysburg College and Seminary he was assigned to the ndhra region of India. worker among the Tamil people on the southeast coast of India, Ziegenbalg was opposed both by local Hindus and by Danish authorities who favored a different missionary style. He was known for caring about the welfare of the whole person. Nommensen was born in northern Germany and was sent to Sumatra as a Lutheran missionary. Working among the Batak people, he translated the scriptures into their language, and honored their native culture.
