03 Back to Index National News Updated: Diocese moving from prayer to action in wake of Hurricane Michael In the wake of Hurricane Michael, which left 13 known dead and more than 1 million without power two days after it ravaged the Florida panhandle, the Diocese of Pensacola- Tallahassee, whose territory was smack in the path of the Category 4 storm, is moving from prayer to action. The diocesan website still urged prayer for the hurricane s victims, quoting two verses form Psalm 107, and also encouraged people to donate much-needed items to those whose lives were upended by Michael. In conjunction with Catholic Charities of Northwest Florida, the diocese is accepting cash donations at CLICK HERE. Goods urgently needed include water, tarps, nonperishable food items, cleaning supplies and gloves, pet supplies, and baby food and diapers. The diocesan pastoral center in Pensacola was accepting these items through Oct. 15 th, while St. Mary Church in Fort Walton Beach was conducting a weekend collection for those items Oct. 13 th -14 th. So many people have lost everything: homes, property and even their livelihood. The scenes of destruction are heart-wrenching, knowing that when we see a place where there once was a house, a family used to live there and are now homeless, Bishop William A. Wack of Pensacola-Tallahassee said in an Oct. 12 th letter to the diocese. He said the priests and employees of the diocese have been accounted for and personal injury seems to have been kept to a minimum given the size of the storm. Some church buildings, parish halls, rectories, schools and other buildings may be a total loss, but the damage was still being assessed, he added.insurance will help with the rebuilding but it will be a long-term recovery project, Bishop Wack said. But I know that we will come together and do what we need to pull through this. He asked those who are able to donate supplies or funds to help with the recovery. In the meantime, the bishop said, the diocese was working hard to arrange temporary places to celebrate the upcoming weekend Masses to accommodate parishioners whose church buildings are lost or have been deemed unsafe. Obviously, if it is not safe -- or possible -- to attend Mass on a Sunday, you are not obligated to go. Your safety is most important, Bishop Wack said. Hurricane Michael retained hurricane-force winds up to 200 miles inland as it tore through Georgia before dumping heavy, windy rains onto North and South Carolina and part of southern Virginia before heading back out to the Atlantic Ocean.Seven of the deaths were in Virginia, which Gov. Ralph Northam declared a disaster area before the storm hit. One firefighter died while on an emergency call, while the others had reportedly drowned. Four deaths occurred in one Florida county, including a man who was killed when a tree crashed through his home. An 11-year-old Georgia girl was killed when the hurricane s high winds tore away a carport and sent it smashing into a modular home where the girl was visiting her grandparents. An early estimate of losses from the hurricane was set at $4.5 billion by CoreLogic, based on the replacement cost of the houses and other building that would be in the storm s path. The company s numbers do not include flood damage.

04 WEST TENNESSEE CATHOLIC Back to Index Catholic Charities USA is a member of National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster, and is a trusted source by the Federal Emergency Management Administration, where people can make contributions. The homepage of its website, has a link to make donations to assist hurricane victims. It is the first time on record that a hurricane of this intensity had hit the Florida panhandle. Those who surveyed the damage to the towns in Michael s path said the destruction appeared to them to be more like that from a tornado, as building after building had been flattened. While a Florida military base in the hurricane s trajectory was evacuated and its planes flown hundreds of miles away, prisoners were not evacuated, and many of the region s poor people found they had nowhere to go until it was too late to get out.the hurricane rose in intensity quickly before hitting landfall Oct. 10 th. Those who stayed behind may have expected Michael to remain a tropical depression. However, fueled by abnormally warm water in the Gulf of Mexico, it rose from a tropical depression to a Category 2 hurricane Oct. 9 th, before gaining Category 4 status early Oct. 10 th. As the hurricane neared, the Pensacola-Tallahassee Diocese posted a prayer to St. Michael on its website. St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil, the prayer says. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray: and you, O prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, cast down to hell Satan and the other evil spirits, who prowl through the world for the ruin of souls. Amen. In his Oct. 12 th letter Bishop Wack told the faithful of his diocese: Please know that you are in my prayers. I am asking that St. Michael the Archangel -- co-patron of our diocese -- intercede for us and help us in this critical time. He added: This is God s church and he will make it possible for us to continue to practice our faith, serve one another and serve him. The Diocese of Venice, well south of the storm, had done likewise with a Hurricane Prayer that was first posted on the diocesan website, then which migrated to Twitter and retweeted. O God, master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of land and sea, the prayer begins. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land, and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season we turn to you, O loving Father, it says. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, our beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son on our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem, where a stormless eternity awaits us. Amen. g

05 Back to Index National News New film tells true story of broken marriage restored by God s grace SAN DIEGO (CNS) Most people will never know firsthand what it s like to see their real-life marital struggles played out on the big screen. But Darren and Heather Turner do and, as Darren freely admits, It is surreal, for sure. As he watched the new film Indivisible, which opens in theaters Oct. 26 th, he couldn t help appraising the actors performances. At some points, he remembered things playing out a bit differently; at others, the re-enactment was astonishingly, perhaps uncomfortably, accurate. Adding to the surrealism of it all was the fact that the events depicted onscreen all took place about a decade ago, and the couple and their relationship have changed dramatically since then. We re different people (now); we ve grown, Darren Turner said in a telephone interview he and his wife had this summer with The Southern Cross, newspaper of the San Diego Diocese. I definitely don t want to repeat a lot of what you saw in the movie. Indivisible recounts Darren s experiences as an Army chaplain during the Iraq War, how the pressures of that ministry led to the unraveling of his marriage, and ultimately how that relationship was healed as the couple began to cooperate with God s grace. Darren and Heather, both 45, have been married for 18 years and have three children. When they met, he was a campus minister at the University of Georgia. They got married, started a family and remained actively involved in ministry. After the terror attacks of 9/11, they became aware of the many U.S. service members being separated from their families on long deployments, said Heather Turner. This weighed heavy on our hearts and filled them with a desire to serve the people who were serving. Darren felt attracted to the idea of military chaplaincy, and Heather agreed that it seemed to be a good fit for a man she described as a guy s guy who loved the outdoors and athletic activity and was a bit rough around the edges.

06 WEST TENNESSEE CATHOLIC Back to Index But the challenges of Darren s new vocation were much greater than either he or Heather anticipated. During a 15-month deployment, he saw many soldiers killed or seriously injured, and it began to wear on him. As he ministered to them, he admitted, In some ways, I neglected my own heart and my own soul. Meanwhile, his wife was raising their three young children, then between the ages of 10 months and 6 years old, on her own. Heather said that just being a stay-at-home mom can be so exhausting that you don t have anything to give anymore by the time your spouse comes home at the end of the day. That happened to us, she explained, just multiplied by 15 months. By the time Darren returned from Iraq, he had internalized a lot of anger. And he admits that he gave short shrift to the struggles that Heather had faced during his absence, believing that they paled in comparison to his own. We just kind of positioned ourselves in our own corners, like a boxing match, Darren said. The couple ultimately decided to separate.heather remembers it as a very nasty and self-centered, angry separation and, at the time, did not see anything but divorce at the end of the road. It wasn t until several months into the separation that they started on the path toward reconciliation. Darren said that a milestone was reached when he and Heather were broken by the cross of Jesus Christ and were finally able to recognize one another as spouses rather than enemies. He was disgusted by how he had failed to forgive his wife as Jesus had forgiven him. Who was I to withhold that from her? he said, recalling the challenging question that led to his breakthrough. That broke me and I was able to approach Heather very differently. For Heather, reconciliation became possible after she recognized the folly of clinging to a marriage that I had designed in my head, rather than accepting whatever God wanted for her. She found herself preferring an unhappy marriage, if that was truly God s will, to the continued stubborn pursuit of her own plans. It turned out that the Lord s plan was better and it didn t force me to be in a miserable marriage the rest of my life, Heather said with a laugh. These days, Darren is still on active duty. But while he loves his job, he recognizes the danger of allowing it to displace his family as his top priority. The painful experience depicted in Indivisible taught him some hard lessons, and he now has safeguards in place. I make sure that Heather has permission to call me out, said Darren, who also has friends ready to hold him accountable for any lapses. I ve learned a lot, he said. I don t want to go down those same roads, and I ve got people who will speak truth to me. g The Catholic Diocese of Memphis does not tolerate child abuse. 8 08 WEST TENNESSEE CATHOLIC Back to Index World News Hallowtide: An Ancient Catholic Tradition Within Catholic liturgical tradition, Jesus Christ is surely the Prince of Tides: Adventide, Christmastide, Passiontide, Paschaltide, Whitsuntide, and Hallowtide are recognized by the Church as special celebrations of redemptive grace occurring throughout the liturgical year. During the Middle Ages, in Europe s chiefly a rural culture, work was hard and tedious. Realizing the value of leisure, the Church set aside Sundays and some 30 holy days of obligation within the liturgical year, days celebrated with special festivals of worship and merriment. The Church forbade manual labor while encouraging games, theatricals, music, and song to re-creation the human psyche. Hallowtide was and remains part of the liturgical year, extending from the evening of October 31 st, the vigil of All Saints Day through All Souls Day on November 2 nd. The celebration reminds the Church Militant on earth of its union by Baptism and prayer to the Church Suffering in Purgatory and the Church Triumphant in Heaven. This is the essence of the dogma of the Communion of Saints. For nothing, not even death, as St Paul wrote, can separate us from the love of Christ. At Hallowtide, all the Saints in Heaven, known and unknown, are venerated and their intercession implored. Relief is then offered the Holy Souls in Purgatory through prayers, indulgences, and special Masses. During the even (late afternoon or evening) of the vigil of the Feast of All Saints All Hallows in Olde English children would go souling strolling from door-to-door, singing special souling songs about the need to pray for the faithful departed in Purgatory, that they might soon enter into heavenly glory. Grateful housewives rewarded singers with small souling cakes, eaten while still warm: round loaves of sweet quickbreads or small cakes looking like thick cookies, each marked with a cross of raisins or currants. Hallowe en is also a time for laughing at Satan. Never heard that before? Well, I m not surprised. Our sophisticated age has cast off many a lively Catholic tradition. It s unfortunate because children crave traditions. When God is divorced from the family, children s lives are the poorer for the loss. Catholic children used to be taught that Satan loathes being reminded that he has forever lost the divine joy of the Beatific Vision. Immersed in spiteful arrogance and conceit, the supreme narcissist absolutely detests being laughed at. Regrettably, mistaken Fundamentalist attitudes have come to fore in recent years. Hallowe en is regarded as a fearsome night given over to evil; a night belonging to Satan and demonic minions. Bosh! Catholic spirituality is much healthier. We yield nothing to evil; surrender nothing created by God to Satan. Catholics sang hymns extolling Christ s victory over death, hell and sin / which Adam s transgression had wrap t us in. while advised to Rejoice and be merry, set sorrow aside! for, on Calvary, Satan lost. Death fell victim to Life. By wearing costumes betokening scary ghosts, red-suited devils, and evil witches children ridiculed death, hell, and sin, in light of Christ s Resurrection. In time, more secularized societies lost the original Catholic intent. Costumes became scary and Hallowe en was turned into a fright-fest. On All Souls Day, pray for our brothers and sisters, the Holy Souls in Purgatory: Eternal rest grant to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. And, on All Saints Day, rejoice with our brothers and sisters now beholding the face of God: Blessed be God in His Angels and in His Saints! g

11 Back to Index National News Supreme Court rejects appeal in Tennessee death row case A previously delayed execution in Tennessee will likely go ahead after the Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal from a convicted murderer currently on death row. The decision was made Oct. 11 th. The appeal argued that Tennessee s lethal injection program was inhumane and amounted to cruel and unusual punishment. Writing in opposition to the decision, Justice Sonia Sotomayor said the failure to take the case amounted to complicity in state-sponsored brutality. The appeal by Edmund Zagorski followed an unsuccessful application for executive clemency which he presented to Gov. Bill Haslam in September. In that application, he requested that his sentence be commuted to life in prison without parole, expressing regret for his crimes and sorrow to the victim s families. That application was denied. Edmund Zagorski, 63, was sentenced to death in 1984 for the murder of two men who had met him to buy drugs. The Catholic bishops of Tennessee had previously spoken out against Zagoski s planned execution. We recognize that the pain, suffering, and loss of life caused by Mr. Zagorski more than thirty years ago has negatively impacted many people, and we agree that the state has a right to expect punishment for those crimes, Bishop Mark Spalding of Nashville and Bishop Richard Stika of Knoxville wrote in an Oct. 10 th statement, released before the Supreme Court s decision. However, the bishops underscored, we remain firmly opposed to the use of the death penalty in all cases. The bishops cited the teaching of the Church and the statements of several popes, particularly Pope Francis August change to the Catechism of the Catholic Church which now teaches that the death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person. The Catholic Church teaches that the death penalty is simply not necessary when society has other means to protect itself and provide a just punishment for those who break civil laws. Rather than serving as a path to justice, the death penalty contributes to the growing disrespect for human life, the two Tennessee bishops wrote. Zagorski s clemency application included sworn statements from six of the jurors from his trial in 1984, who said that had the option been available to them, they would have given Zagorski life in prison without parole. Today, all 30 states that impose the death penalty give jurors the option of life without parole; in Tennessee life without parole can now be imposed at the request of just one juror. Zagorski s attorneys argue that he would have been given that sentence rather than death if it had been an option in 1984.

12 WEST TENNESSEE CATHOLIC Back to Index At that time, the only sentencing options available to the jury were life in prison with the possibility of parole, or death, according to the Nashville Scene. The wife of one of Zagorski s victims has stated that she did not oppose clemency being granted. In addition, his application included a statement from a prison correctional officer detailing Zagorski s apparent improvement of character while in prison. The counselor described a notable occasion when Zagorski helped to break up a fight between other inmates. Governor Haslam said in a statement denying the clemency petition that Zagorski s good behavior in prison did not excuse the murder of the two victims. Zagorski was originally scheduled to be put to death by lethal injection Oct. 11 th. Just three hours before the execution was scheduled to take place, Governor Haslam issued a ten-day delay for the state to consider his request to die by electric chair rather than lethal injection. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit had granted a stay of his execution the day before, Oct. 10 th, after the Zagorski s lawyers argued that he had been given ineffective legal counsel during his trial. Capital prisoners are not entitled to pleasant deaths under the Eighth Amendment, but they are entitled to humane deaths, Justice Sotomayor wrote. The longer we stand silent amid growing evidence of inhumanity in execution methods like Tennessee s, the longer we extend our own complicity in state-sponsored brutality. Following the Supreme Court s ruling, Zagorski s execution is likely to go ahead at the end of the ten-day delay imposed by Gov. Haslam, during which the state will consider the inmate s request to be put to death by electrocution. Once that decision is made, the state Supreme Court will then issue a new execution date for Zagorski. Tennessee last carried out a three-drug lethal injection execution in August, the state s first since 2009, after Governor Haslam denied a clemency request from Billy Ray Irick. The drug used in that execution, midazolam, has widely been reported to cause extreme pain during execution. In July, ahead of Irick s execution, Bishop Spalding and Bishop Stika were joined by Bishop Martin Holley of Memphis and wrote a joint letter to Gov. Haslam asking him to put an end to the death penalty in the state. g Later in the evening of Oct. 11 th, the Supreme Court reversed the Court of Appeal s decision and declined to hear Zagorski s case, which would have considered the constitutionality of the state s lethal injection protocol. Justices Sotomayor and Breyer disagreed with the court s opinion, citing evidence that the drugs used in lethal injections caused severe pain and led to inhumane executions. 13 13 Back to Index World News Eastern European bishops want a focus on Eucharist, fatherhood in Youth Synod Rome, Italy (CNA/EWTN News) Two Eastern European bishops asked the Synod of Bishops in Rome for a greater focus on the importance of the Eucharist, the liturgy and fatherhood in the final Synod document during their interventions this week. These issues were raised by Archbishop Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz of Minsk Belarus and Archbishop Zbignevs Stankevics of Riga, Latvia at the synod of bishops on young people, the faith, and vocational discernment being held at the Vatican Oct. 3 rd -28 th. Synod fathers periodically have the opportunity to give interventions lasting 3-5 minutes. In his prepared intervention on Oct. 10 th, Archbishop Kondrusiewicz asked the Synod fathers to emphasize the importance and centrality of the Eucharist in the final document. Referencing the the Instrumentum Laboris (working document) of the Synod of Bishops, Archbishop Kondrusiewicz noted that though the document has great pastoral value, it mentions the Eucharist only twice and the sacraments only eight times. Archbishop Kondrusiewicz said that Eucharist is fundamental to the Catholic faith, and gave an example of how the Eucharist has drawn Belarusian youth deeper into their faith. Because Belarus borders the Baltic States, Belarusan youth traveled to Lithuania and Latvia to take part in the recent Papal visit on Sept. 22 nd -25 th. The Archbishop recalled that 2,000 Belarusian faithful, half of them young people, traveled to Pope Francis Mass in Kaunas Sep. 23 rd, while only 500 took part to the meeting with the youth scheduled in Vilnius Sep. 22 nd. Archbishop Kondrusiewicz said that those young people recognized the importance of the Mass, as well as of meeting the Holy Father. He added that the Church needs not just horizontal efforts...we need vertical efforts, meaning that the Church must not only be a comfortable place for everyone, it must above all be a place of strong spiritual formation. Archbishop Kondrusiewicz also remarked on the need to give more value to spiritual things in the final document, and backed those who raised the issue of the importance of liturgy. We should always remember that liturgy is source and climax of Christian life, and at the same time we must recognize that we lost this truth, and celebrations of Eucharist are turned into theater, he said.

14 WEST TENNESSEE CATHOLIC Back to Index Archbishop Kondrusiewicz underscored that our duty, as shepherds, is to revive the true spirit and beauty of liturgy, and voiced his support for the proposal that the Congregation for the Divine Worship and Discipline of Sacraments draft a new document on the importance of adherence to liturgical norms. Young people admire good liturgy, and our duty is to fulfil their wish, he said. Fatherhood was the center of Archbishop Zbignevs Stankevics intervention during the first week of the Synod. Though his intervention received much consensus, the issue was not included in the minor circles reports. Archbishop Stankevics noted that fathers are crucial for the transmission of the faith, as data show that when a father is seriously involved in faith issue, there is a 75 percent probability that (his) children will follow him, while when only the mother is involved in the faith, there is just a 15 percent chance that (her) children will follow. Likewise, when a mother converts, the family converts after her in 17 percent of cases, while when a father converts, the family will convert in 93 percent of cases. Archbishop Stankevics said that Catholics must look past the stereotype that education to faith must be entrusted to mother, as in God s plan, man defends (his family) not only from concrete dangers, but also from spiritual and ideological dangers. Therefore, he said, it is the father s task to care for his family s relationship with God and encourage (his) wife and children in practicing the faith. g Are you still grieving? 15 15 Back to Index Local News The Red Mass is Celebrated at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Dozens turned out for the annual Red Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Midtown. For this year s mass, His Excellency Most Reverend Martin D. Holley was the principal celebrant and Auxiliary Bishop from Washington, His Excellency Most Reverend Roy Campbell Jr. was the Homilist. The Red Mass tradition goes back many centuries in Rome, Paris, and London and was held on the first Monday of October, opening the judicial year. This is a day where scarlet red is typically worn, symbolizing the tongues of fire representing the holy spirit. The attendants at the cathedral and across the globe pray for God to help as administrators of justice and call upon the Holy Spirit to guide them every day. A luncheon followed the Red Mass in Marian Hall of the Cathedral where local attorney and State Deputy for the Tennessee Knights of Columbus Michael McCluster thanked and recognized those in attendance. Photographer: Karen Focht We have an incredible opportunity because every day we get to look through that thin veil at the intersection of heaven and earth where we get to interact with the young mother who never thought her marriage would end in divorce, the family who has come to the bankruptcy courts to re-build their lives. We get to interact with the juveniles who are struggling in their youth within the court system and the drug addicts and prostitutes. Some days we interact with people we think are the vilest human beings. But we are blessed because we are in that intersection of heaven and earth and who we actually have the opportunity to be with, as Bishop Campbell said today, is Jesus Christ. Every day we get to be on the front line with Christ. Photographer: Karen Focht

16 WEST TENNESSEE CATHOLIC Back to Index As he welcomed His Excellency Martin D. Holley he thanked all who helped make the day a success and ended by saying In the book of Genesis we hear where God created humanity and He said it was very good. One thing to notice is that He didn t say we were perfect, because we re not. And that doesn t lessen God at all because God created us to need Him. In needing Him we need His grace, we need His love, we need His mercy. And as Michael has said so well, you are at that intersection of mercy. Even when judgments must be imposed, that is part of God s mercy because God himself gave us the ten commandments, the law, to follow as a guideline. So thank you for your ministry and your service. There is no person who is not good because God created us very well. But it also lets us know there is a war that s going on between good and evil. And for those who fall under the persuasion of evil, which includes every one of us in this room, we need God s mercy and we need His love and His forgiveness. But for those who have been put in the path of the legal system, they need to also know God s justice, because His mercy is tempered with justice. g Photographer: Marc Anthony Marconi Photographer: Karen Focht Photographer: Karen Focht Photographer: Marc Anthony Marconi

17 Back to Index World News Do not judge church by acts of individuals, synod observer says CNS The faults of one person cannot be blamed on the entire Catholic Church, Percival Holt, a 25-year-old observer at the Synod of Bishops, told reporters. All we need is someone there, to listen to you, to help you find the way, Holt said. We don t want the church to make decisions for us, but we want them to help us make our decisions. Italian Archbishop Bruno Forte of Chieti-Vasto, who also spoke at the briefing, noted that young people are ready to take charge. It is worth listening to them, he told reporters. The major question at the synod, Archbishop Forte said, is what church do people yearn for? Young people can help answer that question, he said. g It is wrong to judge the church for the acts of certain people within the church, he said Oct. 11 during the Vatican s daily briefing on what is happening inside the synod on young people, the faith and vocational discernment. Holt, president of the Indian Catholic Youth Movement and member of the National Youth Commission of India s bishops conference, said he wanted to make it clear that the church has immense love and concern for young people. The church cares for you, he said. When asked specifically about the clerical abuse scandal, Holt told Catholic News Service, the abuse was not caused by the structure of the church, but by its members. His message to young people is that if we want the church to be different, we have to hold onto our values and principles. As his generation steps into more leadership positions within the church, he said, they will have the opportunity to make a positive change if they are led by their principles. But if their values are compromised now, the cycle of poor behavior among church leaders will only continue. Repairing the damage, he said, will require an honest dialogue between young people and their elders. It s a challenge for the bishops and the priests to break the generation gap, and to be more inclusive and friendly with us, Holt told CNS.

Accepting Pope Francis invitation for bishops to be bold at the synod, Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Dowd of Montreal told the assembly Oct. 16 th, If I was pope -- I know I m not, but if I was -- I d write an encyclical on four basic questions all human beings ask in one way or another. The four, he said, are: Who is God? If God is good, why is there evil in the world? If God is good but there is evil in the world, what has God done about it? If God is good but there is evil in the world and God is doing something about it, how can we be part of it? The 48-year-old Canadian bishop told synod members that his own religious education in Catholic schools and parishes was an abysmal failure, an education that just gave us pieces and no overall picture. The church needs to renew its religious education programs, he said, and should start by trying to respond to the four questions, which haunt the heart of every person, religious or not. Swiss Cardinal Kurt Koch, president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, also acknowledged the critical situation of the transmission of the faith today and insisted the best way to combat it is by being better examples for young people and encouraging them to be examples for their peers. 19 19 Back to Index We ourselves, Christians who live the faith, are the decisive instrument for spreading the word of God in a credible way, he said. We don t need teachers as much as we need witnesses. Cardinal Beniamino Stella, prefect of the Congregation for Clergy, spoke of the essential importance of seminary education, but he also warned bishops of the phenomenon of wandering seminarians, who migrate from one seminary to another and sometimes one diocese to another without anyone verifying beforehand the suitability of the person and his vocational journey. other community prayer, Bishop McKeown said. Prayer is not about twisting God s arm to do things our way, but about letting God mold our hearts. The call to belong, to grow in knowledge of Jesus and to serve may be countercultural, the bishop said, but they touch the hearts of young people where they are. g He reminded bishops that church rules require them to obtain the candidate s files from previous seminaries and that information should include the results of psychological testing. Bishop Henry D Souza of Bellary, India, said the Catholic Church, its parishes and schools, have a clear mandate to educate and prepare leaders by planting dreams, giving young people ethical values and enhancing critical thinking with an ability for problem solving. Young Catholics should be prepared from childhood to heed God s call to follow Jesus as priests, religious, scientists, artists, professionals, farmers and political leaders at all levels. That, however, requires personal attention to each young person, Bishop D Souza said. Saintly leaders are handmade, one at a time. Bishop Donal McKeown of Derry, Northern Ireland, told the synod that the education and formation of young Christians must take place in the context of a community and have the goal of solidifying their sense of belonging to the community. For Catholics, he said, a community is not just the context for handing on the faith, but also (is) part of the core content of the faith because each person has value as part of the body of Christ. Young people especially need to know they belong and that the church is a place where they can grow, make mistakes like Jesus disciples did, and start again, he said. Belonging provides the context for encountering Jesus alone and with others, particularly through the Mass and

20 WEST TENNESSEE CATHOLIC Back to Index National News Campus ministry report stresses need for collaboration, more outreach WASHINGTON - CNS A report on Catholic campus ministry at U.S. colleges and universities found nearly nonexistent ministry at the nation s community colleges. It also called for more uniform certification standards as well as closer collaboration for campus ministers who operate under different models. The report, A National Study on Catholic Campus Ministry 2017, was issued Oct. 9 th by the U.S. bishops Secretariat on Catholic Education. The (federal) Department of Education reports there are more than 3,000 four-year colleges and universities in the United States. The Catholic Church has a pastoral presence at approximately 1 in 4 four-year institutions, the study said. With the Department of Education data reporting 1,500 community colleges, the Catholic Church s pastoral presence drops to 1 in 60 for community colleges. It added, For growth, Catholic campus ministers need to reach far more campuses than they currently serve. Community colleges present a particularly urgent need. The community college gap is a significant absence, said Barbara Humphrey McCrabb, assistant director for higher education in the secretariat. It becomes even more significant if you look at (theologian) Hoffsman Ospino and his work with Hispanics in higher education. Forty-eight percent of Hispanics who attend college do so at a community college. If we as church are arguing that, given the Fifth Encuentro... that we want to better engage Latinos, campus ministry is a great way to do that, but we re not where they are, she told Catholic News Service. The report took note of divergent models of campus ministry, typified by professional campus ministers on one hand, and campus ministers with missionary groups like the Fellowship of Catholic University Students on the other hand. Both models emphasize Mass, retreats, small-group Bible and faith-sharing groups, discipleship/one-on-one mentoring, leadership development and immersion trips as significant activities for students growth in their faith. Missionary-trained campus ministers emphasize more those activities that promote personal holiness, while degree-educated campus ministers emphasize more the importance of social/charitable work and social justice advocacy, the report said. The commendable strengths to missionary-based ministry -- personal holiness and intimacy with God -- reveals a growing edge for degreeformed ministers. If ministers grant lesser importance to these vertical elements of their relationship with God, students may fail to connect their social action or civic engagement to the Christian love that propels these. It risks diminishing personal piety and obscuring the theological meaning to good works; students may do good without being spiritually formed by the experience, the report said. However, in not seeing the potential for spiritual growth through acts of mercy, solidarity and friendship with those in need or students from other faith traditions, missionarybased ministers can miss the horizontal aspects of Catholic life. This risks cultivating a faith that -- while tuned-in to one s personal sins, graces and relationship with God -- misses much of the relationship of oneself to neighbor and creation, it added. Because these two styles are not often found on the same campus, cooperation and learning from each other must be intentionally fostered for the collective common good of campus ministry. Revised certification procedures was one of the recommendations in the report.

21 Back to Index So was the first review and updating of the national standards for Catholic campus ministry by the Catholic Campus Ministry Association. McCrabb said two working groups have been established to act on those recommendations. One is working on the national standards, and should complete its work by the end of the year. Participants are, she said, a mixture of experienced campus ministers, FOCUS missionaries, and other groups -- like the hospital chaplains who have national standards of their own. The Catholic Campus Ministry Association, she added, is the organization that certifies campus ministers on behalf of the U.S. bishops. It ll help in their reapplication for being the body that certifies, McCrabb said. In a survey of campus ministers conducted for the study, at least 80 percent of those surveyed said their preparation areas included living a moral life in accordance with church teachings; a lifelong relationship with Jesus; being compassionate toward those on the margins, giving witness to their Catholic faith; living a just life in accordance with Catholic social teaching; being active participants in a parish; discerning a religious vocation; and facing challenges to the faith such as secularism, materialism and relativism. The second working group, on resetting certification procedures, is a similarly diverse group, according to McCrabb. Its work is expected to be completed by the end of the college academic year. It will have some issues to work out. One of them is the current certification requirement, which includes being a campus minister for two years. Of all the campus ministers, 540 of them are FOCUS missionaries who are on two-year mission assignments, McCrabb said. None of the missionaries are certified because by the time they become eligible, they are no longer doing campus ministry. The study has allowed us to begin conversations with FOCUS about what they do in their training and preparation for folks, but how do we bring that in alignment with the (Catholic bishops ) conference s expectation? A third recommendation is for more diversity among campus ministers themselves. According to the study, 86 percent of those currently in the field are Caucasian. At a three-day symposium in 2017 as part of the study process, participants suggested creating a diversity initiative to pursue ways of cultivating intercultural competence and greater pastoral engagement of diverse populations on campus. to outline, the report said. A fourth recommendation was to find ways to offer campus ministry at more community colleges. g

22 WEST TENNESSEE CATHOLIC Back to Index World News The Seven in Heaven: Meet the new saints to be canonized this weekend Meet the seven people Pope Francis will officially recognize as saints of the Catholic Church on Sunday. Below are brief biographies on each of their lives, as well as photos of each saint s banner currently on display at the Vatican. Blessed Pope Paul VI Born Giovanni Battista Montini in 1897 and ordained a priest in 1920, he did graduate studies in literature, philosophy, and canon law in Rome before beginning to work for the Vatican Secretariat of State. In 1954, he was named Archbishop of Milan, and in 1958 was made a Cardinal by Pope John XXIII. As a Cardinal, he helped to arrange the Second Vatican Council and chose to continue the council after he became Pope. Montini was elected as Pope Paul VI in 1963 at age 65, not long after the start of the second Vatican Council. This was a difficult time for the Church and for the world, as the ìsexual Revolutionî was in full swing and the struggle for civil rights in the United States in particular was at its peak. Paul VI is perhaps most noted for his 1968 encyclical Humanae Vitae, which served as the Churchís official rebuke to artificial contraception, prohibiting its use. Paul VI died in 1978 and Pope Francis beatified him in Blessed Oscar Romero Born in 1917 in El Salvador, Romero was auxiliary bishop of San Salvador for four years before being elevated to Archbishop in He was an outspoken defender of the rights of the poor in El Salvador, who were being terrorized by right-wing military death squads mainly because of protests over the extreme economic inequality in the country in the 20th century. His weekly homilies, broadcast across the country on radio, were a galvanizing force for the countryís poor as well as a reliable source of news. In addition to speaking out against the governmentís actions El Salvador, he also criticized the US government for backing the military junta that seized El Salvador in 1979, and even wrote to Jimmy Carter in February 1980 asking him to stop supporting the repressive regime. In March 1980, Romero was assassinated, likely by a rightwing death squad, while celebrating Mass. Pope Francis beatified Romero in Blessed Vincent Romano Born in 1751 and ordained a priest in 1775, Romano had studied the writings of St. Alphonsus de Liguori and developed a devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. He spent his whole life as a priest in Torre del Greco and was known for his simple ways and his care for orphans. He worked to rebuild his parish, often with his bare hands, after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in He died in December 1831 of pneumonia and was beatified by Paul VI in Blessed Francesco Spinelli Born in Milan in 1853, Spinelli entered the seminary and was ordained a priest in He began his apostolate educating the poor and also served as a seminary professor, spiritual director, and counselor for several women s religious communities. In 1882, Fr. Spinelli met Caterina Comensoli, with whom he would found the Institute of the Adorers of the Blessed Sacrament. The sisters dedicated themselves to Eucharistic adoration day and night, which inspired their service to the poor and suffering. He died in Today his institute has around 250 communities in Italy, Congo, Senegal, Cameroon, Colombia, and Argentina. Their ministries include caring for people with HIV, orphans, drug addicts, and prisoners. St. John Paul II beatified him in Blessed Nunzio Sulprizio Born in Pescosansonesco, Italy in 1817, Sulprizio lost both of his parents at age six and was brought up by an uncle who exploited him for hard labor. Fatigued and often given dangerous assignments, he developed gangrene and eventually lost his leg. Despite his tremendous suffering, he would reportedly make statements such as: ìjesus suffered

23 Back to Index short religious tracts. Many opposed her work, but Nazaria pressed on. Her order cared for soldiers on both sides of the war between Paraguay and Bolivia, and she herself survived persecutions in Spain during the Spanish Civil war. She died in July 1943, and four years later Pope Pius XII finally granted papal approval to the Congregation of the Missionary Crusaders of the Church, which by that time had spread throughout South America and begun work in Portugal, Spain, France, Italy and Cameroon. Pope John Paul II beatified her in Blessed Maria Katharina Kasper a lot for me. Why should I not suffer for Him? I would die in order to convert even one sinner.î He recovered from the gangrene and dedicated himself to helping other patients before his health deteriorated again. Sulprizio died of bone cancer in 1836, when he was only 19 years old. Pope Paul VI beatified him in Blessed Nazaria Ignacia March Mesa Born in 1889 in Madrid, Spain, Nazaria was the fourth of 18 children. Growing up, her family was indifferent and sometimes even hostile to her desire to enter religious life, but later she led several family members back to the Church when she entered the Franciscan Third Order. Her family moved to Mexico in 1904, and Nazarie met sisters of the Institute of Sisters of the Abandoned Elders, who inspired her to join their order. In 1915, she chose to take perpetual vows with the order in Mexico City and was assigned to a hospice in Oruro, Bolivia for 12 years. Born in Dembach, Germany in 1820 as Catherine Kasper, she attended very little school because of poor health. Despite this, she began to help the poor, the abandoned, and the sick at a young age. Her mother taught her household chores, as well as how to spin and weave fabric. After her father died when she was 21, Catherine worked the land as a farm hand for about 10 cents a day. Her helpfulness toward others attracted other women to her, and she felt a call to the religious life, but knew she needed to stay and support her mother, who was in poor health. After her mother died, Catherine started, with the approval of the bishop of Limburg, Germany, a small house with several friends who also felt the call. In 1851 she and four other women officially took vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience and formed the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ. Catherine, known in the religious community as Mother Mary, served five consecutive terms as superior of the house and continued to work with novices and to open houses for their order all over the world. Today there are 690 sisters in 104 houses in Germany, the Netherlands, the United States, Mexico and India. She died of a heart attack in February 1898, and Pope Paul VI beatified her in g Beginning in 1920, she felt a call to found a new order dedicated to missionary work. In June 1925, she founded the Pontifical Crusade, later renamed the Congregation of the Missionary Crusaders of the Church, with the mission to catechize children and adults, support the work of priests, conduct missions, and to print and distribute
