4 Jesus of Nazareth 5. Jesus taught that God loved people the way a father loves his children. Jesus also believed that people should love God and love their neighbor as they love themselves. 6. Both stories are really about God and how God is like a loving father or like the passerby who gave help and comfort to a stranger. 7. A large crowd came to meet them. Roman soldiers kept an eye on Jesus and his disciples. Some of the Jews kept calling Jesus their deliverer. 8. Jesus and his disciples met in someone s home. They followed Jewish tradition for the Passover meal. Jesus seemed uneasy toward the end of the meal. 9. Some men took Jesus away after the Passover meal. They were afraid there would be trouble in the city. Jesus went peacefully. Who Were the Apostles? 10. Answers will vary. Jesus is the Son of God. People can enter heaven if they accept Jesus and his teachings. God exists as three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. After death, people will be brought back to life the way Jesus was. Guided Reading: Lesson 2 The Early Church Christianity and the Empire 1-5. Answers may vary. Roman-controlled areas were peaceful. Good roads allowed Christians to travel easily. Common languages made it easier to communicate the teachings of Jesus. Christianity appealed to people because of its message of hope. Christian communities offered help to their members in hard times. 6. Romans believed Christians threatened the empire. Christians did not want to worship Roman gods. Christians criticized some Roman festivals and refused to serve in the Roman army. Romans blamed Christians for natural disasters like famines and fires. 7. False - Nero blamed the Christians for starting a fire that burned down most of Rome. 8. False - Diocletian tried to destroy Christianity. 9. False - Constantine became a Christian and supported the spread of Christianity. 10. True 11. False - The emperor Constantine built churches in Rome and Jerusalem with his mother s help. Theodosius made Christianity the official religion of Rome. 12. True Page 4

5 Organizing the Church 13. Patriarchs; leading archbishops of major cities 14. Archbishops; bishops in charge of a region, which included several churches 15. Bishops; explained Christian beliefs, managed regional church affairs, clarified Church teachings 16. Priests; led worship services and managed the affairs of a single church 17. New Testament writings: the four gospels and writings of Paul and other early Church leaders 18. Answers will vary but students should demonstrate an understanding of how all three men claimed to have experienced a life-changing event. According to Christian belief, Paul of Tarsus saw a great light and heard the voice of Jesus. Constantine saw a flaming cross in a dream. Augustine said he heard God s voice telling him to open the Bible. 19. Roman Catholic Christians believed the pope in Rome was the head of all the Christian churches. Eastern Orthodox Christians, on the other hand, did not accept the authority of the pope over their churches. 21st Century Skills Activity: Lesson 1 Collaboration: Group Project 1. The Samaritan stopped to help the wounded man. 2. Answers will vary. One possible response is that a neighbor is someone who will go out of his way to help a person in need. Another interpretation is that we can t ignore someone just because they don t belong to our group. 3. Answers should include some of the following details: a man is traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho; he is beaten by robbers and abandoned; the three passersby are a priest, a Levite, and a Samaritan; the Samaritan pours oil and wine on the man s wounds and gives the innkeeper some silver coins to take care of the man. Applying the Skill The following example is a synopsis of a modern version of the Good Samaritan parable: A new family has moved into the neighborhood. They are from a different country and know very little English. The parents are unable to find work or to afford new clothes for their two children, a boy and a girl. Some of the children s classmates make fun of their old clothes and the way they talk. One day an older student begins to bully the brother. Other students pass by but do nothing to help. Each one has his or her own reason for not wanting to get involved. Finally, one boy does stop. He puts an end to the bullying and eventually becomes the younger boy s first new friend at school. Page 5

6 Primary Source Activity: Lesson 1 Jesus and Judaism 1. A possible response is that the writer was speaking to ancient Israelites and to their Jewish descendants. 2. A possible response is that the writer of Leviticus is against hating other people and against killing. 3. The man asking Jesus a question observes that Jesus has answered other people s questions in a satisfying way. 4. A possible response is that the man is testing Jesus. He wants to find out if Jesus holds to the same understanding of the law that he does. 5. Students should be able to demonstrate their understanding that the answer Jesus gives is almost identical to similar phrases in both passages from the Torah. Geography and History Activity: Lesson 2 The Role of Geography in the Spread of Christianity 1. Paul traveled in Asia Minor on his first journey. His second journey took him through Judaea, Syria, Asia Minor, and Greece. His second journey was longer. 2. The approximate distance between these two cities is 1,400 miles. 3. The northernmost region is Gaul, while the southernmost region is Egypt. 4. Answers will vary. A possible response is that well-built roads made it easier for followers of Jesus to travel from place to place. Also, his disciples could travel by sea if land routes were blocked or too hazardous. 5. Cultural factors might include shared languages, the strong appeal of Christianity, and the fact that the Romans kept the peace in the lands they controlled. Geographic factors might include a network of good roads, the great number of people living around the Mediterranean Sea, the relative closeness of cities, and the option of traveling by sea or by land.
