One of our students is preparing to take her citizenship test. One student from last year just became an American citizen. It's a joy to see the pride these students feel when their goals are met and they become English-language speakers. Thank you for your prayers for this ministry. God bless you. 3 Book Buddy Ministry A Ministry of Help Write to be understood, speak to be heard, and READ TO GROW. Lawrence Clark Powell During the month of September 40 books, 27 extra books and $115 in cash were donated to the Book Buddy Ministry. In addition I received another VERY SPECIAL surprise cash donation of $20 from the Holy Rollers bowling league. The money went to the Book Buddy Ministry. $38.62 was used to purchase 19 books needed in a couple of age groups. These books were purchased at Barnes & Noble, Michael s and Dollar Tree. On October 8, 2018 eighty-five books were distributed to the preschool children and 7 books were donated to the classroom library in Hilson Hall. Helpers Are Needed Helpers are ALWAYS needed for the Book Buddy Ministry which is an outreach program to provide the preschool children of our church with books for their classrooms and their homes books that instill Godly values and nourish children spiritually. Helpers are responsible for providing four books during the school year. For more information, please contact me at (772) Thank you. This month one new person became a helper!!! Thank You! A very special Thank You to all of you who donated books or money to the Book Buddy Ministry during the month of September. When children receive their books you have purchased, this is a wonderful opportunity for families to spend quality time reading and enjoying good literature with their children. God Bless!!! Romans 8:14 "When I arrived at the Children's Home I was sad and frightened. My home life was not happy but at least I knew what to expect. At the Home I was surrounded by loving adults that made me feel safe and loved. Words cannot express my deep gratitude. The Children's Home saved my life." This text was sent to the Children's Home. 4 HANDS FOR THE LORD PUPPETS Luke 2:10-12 but the angel reassured them, Don t be afraid! he said. I bring you good news of great joy for everyone! The Savior--yes, the Messiah, the Lord --has been born tonight in Bethlehem, the city of David! And this is how you will recognize him: You will find a baby lying in a manger, wrapped snugly in strips of cloth! You are invited to come and hear the story of Good News -- Great Joy! performed by the Hands for the Lord Puppet team, and the CUMC Praise Team, and the Children s Church kids. On Saturday, December 1 st, this musical will be in the Sanctuary at 6:00 PM after a Celebration Country Dinner in Hilson Hall at 5:00. You are welcome to wear your hats and boots to go along with our song Were You Born in a Barn? After the performance Happy Birthday Jesus Cake will be served in Hilson Hall. GOOD NEWS - GREAT JOY is a Happy Birthday Party you won t want to miss. The Puppet team will also be bringing this Christmas Musical to Lynmoore Assisted Living (1550 N. Lawnwood Circle) at 10:30 AM on Dec. 1 st. We are looking forward to this blessed season of the birth of our Christ and what the real meaning of Christmas is about. 5 Christmas Angels at Community! Community UMC would like to celebrate Christmas for our younger angels who regularly worship with us, ages 0 through youth, by presenting them with the gift of love and some particular item they would appreciate. The item should cost $20 - $25 and be available at local stores. If you are the parent/guardian of a child who regularly worships at Community, please complete a form with your child s name, information of how to contact you, 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd choice of a gift ($20 - $25 value), and exact size if requested gift is clothing. The more information we have, the easier the shopping will be. Please keep it under $25. Forms will be available in the narthex of the Sanctuary/Chapel on Sunday, November 18, or by contacting Patty Surface. Thank you for completing the form and returning it to Patty or the church office as soon as possible and no later than Tuesday, December 4. Angels will be on the tree beginning Sunday, December 2, the First Sunday of Advent. If you want to shop for a child, please take an angel, record your name where the angel s name is on the sign-up sheet, purchase the item they have requested ($20 - $25 value), and return the wrapped present on Sunday, December 16. Please use the angel tag as the name tag for the present. Also return the form with the gift and mark the item that was purchased so the parent/guardian will be informed. If you cannot shop for a child but want to contribute $20 - $25, someone will shop for your angel. That little burst of cool air lets us know. It s been a hot summer. I m so excited to be coming back home once more. ready to trim, weed, plant. I had a dream. When I walked in the garden, I dreamt a bulldozer had come in and dug everything up. It really made me think about how much I miss the garden. So many exciting events going on at Community. There are activities for everyone. Eating, sewing, creating crafts, music, puppets, sharing God s blessings for all, oh, and also weeding, planting, enjoying our beautiful garden. 6 Daylight Savings Time ends Sunday, November 4, 2018 at 2 a.m. Clocks fall back one hour. Enjoy that extra time. Veteran s Day is Nov. 11. Thank a Veteran for his/her service to our Great Country. Thank God for all your blessings in this season. Community will be collecting canned and non-perishable food items for a family or more at a local elementary school. We will also collect money so they can purchase a turkey or meat. Thanks for leaving your items in the specially marked basket. This Thanksgiving Collection continues through Sunday, November 11. Community s Church Conference is Wednesday, November 14 at 6:30 pm at White City United Methodist Church on Midway Road at Oleander Avenue. Everyone is encouraged to attend. Hope s Closet 4 Children ages birth through 17 (at Graceway Village on Hartman Road) is having a clothing drive. Their biggest need is socks and underwear. Socks can be toddler to adult size. (These are available at Dollar Tree and other places.) The kids like the low ankle or no show socks. Underwear needs are boys boxer style, size boy s 6 to 12 and men s S, M, L, and XL. Prints are best. For girls, sizes 6 to 12 with princess or cartoon prints and teen girls ladies size 5, bikini style. Thanks for placing your donation in the basket in the Chapel/Sanctuary foyer, beginning Sunday, November 18. Thanks. Patty We will decorate the Church after Worship and lunch, Sunday, November 25 (about 1 pm) to be prepared for the First Sunday of Advent, December 2, and the Christmas Season. Plan to stay and help. It s lots of fun, especially with the more the merrier. The season of Advent, which comes from the Latin word adventus meaning coming or visit", begins four Sundays before Christmas and ends on Christmas Eve. Advent is the beginning of the liturgical year for Christians. Advent begins December 2 in Thanks to all who donated time, candy, and/or water to make our Fall Festival so much fun. So many happy families. 202 people registered and I'm sure a few did not. Special thanks to our puppets, kitchen crew, Preschool teachers, and church friends for providing a safe and fun event. THANKS. 2 nd Annual Turkey Bowl! Youth, Parents, Families, and Church Members are invited to the 2 nd Annual Turkey Bowl and Thanksgiving dinner! We will meet in the social hall for a pre-thanksgiving dinner complete with turkey and dressing. After dinner we bowl a frozen turkey for fun prizes! Save the date and come join us on November 15. Fall Festival at Surfside Church Youth, Children, Parents, and Church Members are invited to enjoy Surfside Church s Fall Festival after church on November 4. The food and fun start at 12:30 and continue until 2:00. There will be a free bounce house, playground, and food. The address is 3891 Edwards Road, Fort Pierce, FL Youth Mission Trip and Stock Sale The youth are planning a summer mission trip to the panhandle of Florida. They are currently selling stock to help raise funds for the trip. Each share of stock is $10. There is no limit on how many shares someone can purchase, and you can buy shares from different members of the youth group. Shareholders will receive a certificate, an invitation to a special stock holder s-only dinner catered by the youth ministry, and a personalized post card from the mission trip. Be sure to get your stock soonthe sale ends November 26. You Are God's Pumpkin - 1 Corinthians 1:30-31 (NKJV) 30 But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God and righteousness and sanctification and redemption 31 that, as it is written, He who glories, let him glory in the LORD. A popular symbol of both harvest time and Halloween is the pumpkin. I was thinking recently that being a Christian is a lot like being a pumpkin. Perhaps you are visualizing this orange, round vegetable and wondering how you could ever be compared to one! Simply put, like a child chooses a pumpkin to carve and mold an image upon, so God carves and molds His own unique design in you. The Scriptures tell us that the Lord chooses us. He lifts us up and washes the dirt from our skin. Then he opens us, connecting deep inside to scoop out all the slimy, yucky stuff, including seeds of doubt, spite, lies, and fear. Then He carves a new creation and makes our faces shine by putting His light inside for all to see. Sometimes I feel like I don't want my light to shine because I am ashamed of a thought or action or pattern in my life. I try to hide the light Christ has put in me and blend in with the crowd. What I forget is that when God carved me, created me, and gave me His Son, I no longer had to count on my own strength. I can count on the Lord's. It is He who washes me clean; it is He who gives me a spirit of strength and perseverance; it is He who makes me pure; it is He who frees me from sin; and it is He who gives me hope. When I realize that my part of the equation is to rely on His strength and power, then I can do as Scriptures say, and shine His light through the power of the Holy Spirit. What starts as an everyday squash turns into a lantern of light. What starts as an everyday person turns into a beacon of hope for all to see. Through our union with Christ, we are given the light and wisdom of the Holy Spirit who enters and dwells in our lives. It is He who picked you out and carved you just the way He wants you. So make sure you keep your lantern lit for all to see. (by Kelly McFadden)
