This magazine focuses on our parish as family from the youngest who are baptised and made members of the Church to Cyril Naylor, the oldest parishioner worshipping with us. Vol. 84 No. 2 July We are also part of a wider family the Diocese and the worldwide Church. Our wider family is currently discussing the issue of same-gender relationships and how they fit with our call to be God s Church today. Like some other family discussions, this presents us with challenges because of the wide range of strongly-held views on this topic. Bp Justin urges us to conduct our discussion with grace and respect for one another. Another aspect of our wider family relationships is our connection with the other two tikanga of our three tikanga church. It was great to meet with our local tikanga Maori congregation recently to celebrate Te Pouhere Sunday, and you can read more about that event in this magazine. Ministry to children and youth is crucial if we are to pass our faith on to the next generation. We have a vibrant ministry to children in this parish, and were blessed to have a special visit recently from Captain David Rees, a gifted children s minister, who led us in The Incredible Tour event. Our links with Chilton Saint James School also offer us a great opportunity to share the good news of Jesus Christ with the next generation. Bp Justin recently spent a day at the school meeting people and making connections there. Our AAW group recently had Jenny Duckworth, wife of Bp Justin, as a guest speaker and we look forward also to Bp Justin s visit to St James s Church for our patronal festival service at 10.30am on Sunday 28 July. We welcome all parishioners and friends to share with us that special event in our family life. Let us continue to meet together and show hospitality to one another as we seek to grow as the family of God here in this parish. Your friend and brother in Christ Peter

Bishop s Letter Advance Notices June 2013 Greetings Family As we approach the shortest day and the heart of winter, I pray that we each may experience afresh God s love, grace and compassion in the darkness of our own lives. Often, as a Bishop, I get asked three questions: the first normally revolves around my appearance having dreadlocks and bare feet or jandals; the second is my view on the same sex issues facing the Church; and the distant third is around my seeming addiction to sausage rolls... Normally I am quick to answer the first and third question. However I have been slower to publicly put forth my position on the same sex relationship discussion. This is not because I don t have a view, but because I am slow to enter this discussion for two reasons. Firstly, I think that although the same sex issue is important, it s nowhere near the most important issue facing the Church. For example I would have thought the Church s wrestling with consumerism, materialism and individualism would be equally if not more important. I have been slow to add my views to this discussion as I did not want to add any more fuel onto an already blazing issue. Actually I would prefer to spend my time drawing attention to the issues which I think are incredibly significant for us as followers of Jesus, but which are not being adequately addressed. My perspective is whatever the Anglican Church decides on this issue; we will still wake up the next day having not given enough attention to other issues which I know are also central to being the faithful church of Jesus at this point in history. Whatever the Anglican Church decides, I am sure that God is deeply concerned about how we do this process, and how we love each other with whom we disagree with along the way. I believe the Bible is stronger and clearer on the need to seek unity and to love one another in our differences, than it is on issues surrounding same sex relationships. As a Bishop I am totally committed to helping His Church practice dwelling together well, even though we may disagree on different issues. That is my calling. Having made these two points, it is now the time as a Diocese to discuss this issue actively. I am asking all Parishes, in preparation for our Synod in September, to have discussions around your views as guided by scripture, tradition and reason on same sex relationships and the Church. Please remember we are not talking about abstract concepts we are talking about real people; ourselves and our neighbours. It is important that we have this discussion not necessarily so we all agree but so we are all heard and understood. My hope, as we embark on this conversation in our Parishes and at Synod, is that the miracle will take place where we still choose to disagree but our relationships will be stronger due to the way we have undertaken this process. In conclusion, I am not asking those who are passionate on either side of this issue to water down your views. I am asking that the way we discuss our views is treated as important as the views themselves. Take the time to listen to each other, listen to where each other is coming from, and constantly ask what is the Spirit saying to the Church. I am looking forward to listening and learning from you on this topic in the coming months. Blessings +Justin PS: I know I still haven t told you where I personally sit on the issue!

Sharing Worship as an Extended Family On Te Pouhere Sunday each year, we celebrate the three-tikanga constitution of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia. This constitution, adopted in 1992, is pictured as a pouhere or hitching post, to which each of the three cultural streams (tikanga) within our church can hitch its waka or canoe. It is our point of connection. The purpose of this constitution was to allow each tikanga to be in charge of its own development as a church, and to remedy the cultural dominance of tikanga pakeha on the other tikanga partners. While this has been a positive aspect of the constitution, a less positive effect has been a tendency for us to live separate lives at the grass roots level of the church, as we do our own thing in our own separate places of worship. In previous years, as we celebrated Te Pouhere Sunday, I had felt this sense of separation from our fellow Anglicans in other tikanga. So this year I extended an invitation to the local Rimutaka ki Muritai Maori congregation to celebrate Te Pouhere Sunday with us. On 2 June our worship was in Maori and English, and the Revd Bruce Aranga and I concelebrated at the Eucharist. Ema Weepu, who is a member of both congregations, was our worship leader. Our sermon, on the ministry of reconciliation, was given by the Revd Derek Lightbourne, and is available on our website ( Our worship was followed by a shared lunch in the hall, with good food and some relaxed and friendly time together. The time of fellowship was concluded 6 July 2013 Vol. 84 No. 2 In 1990 Peggy suffered a severe heart attack which she recovered from but they decided (after nearly 50 years) to move from their 2 storey house in Naenae to a more convenient single storey unit in Boulcott Street, Lower Hutt. At this point they became members of our parish, attending St James s Church with Rev Ray Oppenheim as Vicar. They soon became active members in the church. Sadly, on the 15 th April (Good Friday) 1995, Peggy died. After a time Cyril became more involved in the Caring Committee and became Team Leader for the Church Cleaning Team as well as a Magazine Deliverer. In his time as the Team Leader for the Cleaning Team, Cyril re-organised the approach taken to manage the cleaning of the church. Cyril was a regular volunteer at the Lower Hutt Hospital Chapel, assisting with the collection of patients for Sunday services. He also worked with Les Baird (as a Driver) to deliver Ezee Meals during the week. From 1998 to 2003 Cyril (at the suggestion of Ray Oppenheim) took on a Teacher Aide role at Hutt Central School, helping children with their reading programme. From 1999 to 2003 Cyril was also a Licensed Pastoral Minister visiting parishioners in their homes or at rest homes. In 2003, Cyril (aged 88) retired from his active Pastoral, Cleaning and Ezee Meals roles and took a more leisurely position within the church. In 2005 Cyril (then aged 90) was designated as officially blind. Photo Cyril continued to be a regular attendee at Sunday services and to assist at the Hutt Hospital Chapel. In 2012 Cyril (after 22 years) moved from his home in Boulcott St to a council flat in Alicetown which is walking distance for Cyril to attend St James services. To this day Cyril is still a regular attendee at the 10.30am Sunday service and continues to assist at the Hutt Hospital Chapel s Sunday afternoon services At 97 years young Cyril is our oldest parishioner, and he is fast approaching 98 with his birthday coming up on the 21 st July! Dan Reeves (with help from Cyril Naylor) Vol. 84 No. 2 July

Cyril Naylor A summary of his Christian life and involvement with St James Church Cyril was born in Manchester on 21st July 1915, and was christened in Abbey Hey Anglican Church, Manchester. His family migrated to New Zealand in They had friends in Wanganui so decided to settle there and moved into a brand new house in Cyril attended St Peter s Anglican Church in Gonville, Wanganui. The Vicar there was Rev DB Malcolm (Jean Malcolm s grandfather). From 1925 to 1937 Cyril was an active member of the St Peter s parish and participated as an Altar Boy and member of the Boys Choir and then the Men s Choir. Cyril moved to Wellington in 1937, when he joined the Police Force. He attended St Mark s Anglican Church, located at the Basin Reserve, for a brief period before getting married in 1938 to Peggy (Margaret Patricia). at Christ s Church (Peggy s family Church) in Wanganui. In 1941 they rented a house in Johnsonville and attended the St John s Anglican Church, with Rev Bretton as Minister. (Canon Bretton was later a Vicar at St James s.) Also that year their first child (Dianne Patricia) was born but sadly died not long after birth. In 1944 their son Terry was born and their second son Murray was born in Cyril was promoted to the CIB within the Police Force in 1948 and the family moved to a house in Keys Street in Naenae, in The family attended St David s Anglican Church in Naenae. Cyril came from CIB in Wellington to Lower Hutt Police Station as an Acting Detective and was soon promoted to Detective and then Detective Sergeant. In 1959 Cyril was promoted to Senior Detective and took up the position back in Wellington Central Police Station. Cyril was President of the Police Association from 1957 to 1961, when he left the Police Force to take up a job as a Cartage Contractor/Owner Driver, working primarily for the Lower Hutt City Council and Ministry of Works on road maintenance contracts. In 1980 at the age of 65, Cyril retired from Cartage Contracting and spent more time at home and was involved in numerous roles within St David s Anglican Church in Naenae. with speeches, and there was a feeling that our meeting together had been significant for both of our congregations. The hope was expressed that we would continue to meet from time to time, and we have since received an invitation for a group or groups from our congregation to make a return visit to the Rimutaka ki Muritai congregation. I give thanks for the real sense of joy and fellowship in Christ we had as we worshipped and shared food together. I am convinced that as we meet with other Christians across cultures, we discover more of what it means to be a follower of Christ and a member of God s family. May God continue to give us opportunities to share with other Christians across cultures and find the unity we have in Christ. Peter Benge 14 July 2013 Vol. 84 No. 2 Vol. 84 No. 2 July

Baptism Becoming a member of God s family Since the time of Jesus, people who have put their faith in him as their Saviour and Lord have been baptised and made members of the Church, the family of God. At first, it was normally adults who were baptised, but as the community of believers grew and the Christian faith became more accepted, it became more usual for children of believing parents to be baptised. Baptism literally means plunging, and originally those who were baptised may have been baptised by full immersion, being plunged into water. In later years a variety of traditions of baptism grew up, including the common Anglican and Roman Catholic practice of sprinkling water on the head of a candidate for baptism. There are many symbols involved in baptism. The water is a symbol of cleansing from sin. It is also a symbol of death dying to an old life of pleasing ourselves and rising to a new life of pleasing God. Light is another symbol used in baptism. At a baptism a candle, symbolising the light of Christ, is lit from the paschal candle and given to the baptismal candidate. So far this year we have baptised or christened Oscar Rangsei Kim, Claire Anne Pemberton and Laura Zoey McHardy. This photo and the one on the cover are of Claire Pemberton s baptism. Her grandmother and grandfather were with us from Fiji. Claire is already a regular worshipper with us, coming with her mother Ellen and sister Laura. 8 July 2013 Vol. 84 No. 2 Jenny Duckworth spoke to AAW recently Jenny is the wife of Bishop Justin but I hesitate to label her in such an old fashioned way. She is an interesting, articulate woman who has achieved as much in her own right as in partnership with her husband. However what a positive and fruitful partnership it is. She spoke to AAW about Urban Vision and the contemporary monastery, Ngatiawa, which they have established in Waikanae, and also about her work with Servants to Asia s Urban Poor. Jenny spoke about their earlier work in central Wellington, living in an old warehouse, providing shelter for homeless and troubled girls. Then in 2003 they established Ngatiawa which is a retreat centre for groups or individuals who need time out from the stress of the city. There is a daily rhythm of prayer, hospitality and communal life. There are so many people wanting to experience life at Ngatiawa that they have declared the month of June each year to be visitor free, to enable the staff to replenish their own resources. Jenny has also been involved until recently with the organisation Servants to Asia s Urban Poor. She told moving stories about the plight of people living in the slums of Asia. You may like to read more about these projects so just Google the names and you will find plenty of information. Also Jenny and Justin published a book last year Against the Tide, Towards the Kingdom., Pamela Cook Secretary AAW Vol. 84 No. 2 July

Our Wedding! First post-renovation wedding at All Saints On Saturday 11 May at 2.00pm, the Revd Jinny Kean from Churton Park and Fr Bruce England of Ss Peter & Paul parish co-presided at the Anglican-Catholic wedding of Heather Gunn and Des Schollum. Des is well known for his Waterloo bookshop House of Books and he is a local Belmont Domain resident. The wedding involved the children and grandchildren from both sides of the family and it was a most happy occasion. The church was full to capacity with 53 seats provided. The bride and attendants wore purple and looked suitably radiant on the day. Professional caterers provided the afternoon tea, and the All Saints committee provided a luncheon for the following day. We wish Heather and Des a blessed and happy marriage and congratulate them both. Gill Berridge THE INCREDIBLE TOUR was action packed fun for Children and Adults (children of all ages!) Songs, games and stories were enjoyed by all. The programme was conducted by David Rees on Saturday 29 June, with about 50 participants. David is a gifted children s minister and a Captain in the Church Army, which is a community of Pioneering Evangelists working mainly within the Anglican Church. God can do anything, anything at all. Nothing is too big for him, nothing is too small. This is an action song we learnt. WONDERFUL LORD, Wonderful Lord, wonderful God, You are my shield, my protector. I can lie down, go off to sleep, Knowing You re watching over me. Wonderful Lord, wonderful God, Help me to trust You forever. I need not fear, cause You are near, I can lie down and sleep in peace Doug Horley 12 July 2013 Vol. 84 No. 2 Vol. 84 No. 2 July

Bishop Justin Visits Chilton Saint James School Worship Captain Michelle Keating reflected that Meeting Bishop Justin was a privilege and a great experience; he shared so much knowledge with us and inspired us all, after she and her Deputy Amanda Lawson spent time showing Bishop Justin round the School. The Right Reverend Justin Duckworth was a popular guest at his recent visit to Chilton Saint James School. In his daylong visit Bishop Justin made quite an impact spending time talking to students and staff throughout the School. Year 1 students in particular enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about his ceremonial robes as part of their Unit of Inquiry into artefacts. Some even got to try on his Mitre and Cope. Chilton s link with St James is also very apparent as you walk around the School. In 2011 the School Council project was a Pilgrim s Garden. The garden, centred around a mosaic scallop shell, provides an enduring reminder of the School s association with St James, the patron saint of pilgrims for whom the shell is an emblem. More recently the 2012 School Council commissioned a brass ceremonial Cross allowing the School to have its own Cross for School services. Weekly Chaplain s services alternate between the Junior and Senior Schools. These are held at the School and are run by School Chaplains Reverends Peter Benge or Jean Malcolm. A Junior Chaplain s Team and Senior Worship Committee assist with services and work to promote the School values of love, compassion, honesty, integrity, moral courage and respect for others. Students at all levels of the School take part in the religious education programme which, as they progress through the School, explores the wider aspects of religion, philosophy and ethics. St James Church has been an integral part of Chilton s history since its founding in Former students hold fond memories of outings to church for the annual St James Day celebrations, a date that remains central to the School calendar. Special services such at the Junior Mother Daughter Service and Year 13 Leavers Service continue to be held at St James Church. The connection is also apparent in the number of St James Church parishioners with daughters attending the School. Thirteen girls currently hold Suzanne Duncan Scholarships; these are awarded to Years 7 13 students who attend St James Church. 10 July 2013 Vol. 84 No. 2 Vol. 84 No. 2 July
