1 ST. ANTHONY FRATERNITY NEWSLETTER Fraternity #101 Volume 21 Issue 06 June 2018 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, FROM OUR MINISTER Let me thank you for your yes to our vocation and our Order. Many times, we forget to thank the people who are closest to us. In my case (as my children often remind me), I am the hardest on my family and the people closest to me. Perhaps it is because we are more comfortable being direct and honest with our families and close friends. Perhaps it is because we know that family and friends are more accepting and forgiving than strangers. OR perhaps it is because we know our family and friends are stuck with us! Next month, we will elect our new Fraternity council. We can call ourselves family right? Of course we can! Are we not brothers and sisters? We are connected as brothers and sisters because we are all sons and daughters of our Creator. We are connected as brothers and sisters because we have been chosen to serve the Lord through our profession to the OFS. I invite you to think seriously and prayerfully about serving your brothers and sisters in the Fraternity by serving on the council. Please be open to where the Holy Spirit is leading you. A good way to do that is by attending the celebration of the Rule retreat on June 23 and the annual St. Anthony picnic on June 24. There, you will be renewed and confirmed so that you can truly live the treasure! Thankfully your sister, Israela 1

4 OUR BROTHER IN FRANCIS JESUS ARTURO FRANCISCO OLIVAS, OFS September 10, 1958 November 18, 2017 St. Anthony Fraternity Minister May 27, 2018 at the National Hispanic Cultural Center It was a beautiful day, a beautiful place to celebrate a beautiful life! There was music, gifts, slide shows and dance. But what touched me the most were all the many tributes to how this gentle yet strong soul touched everyone who came into his life. The tributes came from a priest friend, family, college classmates, fellow teachers, fellow artists, members of the NHCC and those who ministered to people with terminal illness. It was stated that Arturo walked so many different paths and walked to the beat of a different drum. He was rooted in family, faith and history. His friends spoke of his high level of energy and dedication in all of his endeavors. A people person, he valued friendships and relationships and was a seasoned manager of conflict, creating peace and community. You could see the influence of both art and faith in his projects, and he led by example. One of his tributes stated that he was a thoughtful person he put a lot of thought into what he said! Another told us that he and Art were total opposites, yet he was the only person with whom he could have a calm, interesting, stimulating conversation. He made everyone feel as they were the only one around and encouraged others to be their own person. A fellow artist told of Art s works as having a magnificent energy and that he was most at home in his garden among the color and beauty of the Creator. A very touching moment for me and for all present was when Arturo s father, Jose Olivas, sang a Spanish song about a shepherd and played the harmonica. There were many moments of laughter when friends recounted his comical ways and we remembered that Arturo truly had Franciscan joy! We as his brothers and sisters in St. Anthony Fraternity have our own special memories of Arturo and how he touched our lives. His memory lives on in all who knew him. (By Marilyn Migliarini, OFS) T T T T T T T T T T T T T T T T T T T T T T T T T T T T T T T T T T TT T WHAT HAPPENED AT THE MAY GATHERING Our Gathering began with recitation of the Franciscan Crown, in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary during her month. 4

5 Derek Kolb, Laura Manire, Antonio Martinez, Bill Parras and Tony Torres have completed Orientation. During the Ceremony of Introduction and Welcoming, each spoke briefly on what attracted them to the Secular Franciscans. They will now begin the Inquirer Phase. For Ongoing Formation, Israela shared Franciscan Reflection: St. Francis and Mary, Mother of Jesus by Wesley Meadowcroft. After learning about two of St. Francis Marian prayers, we each wrote our own Salutation to Mary. Gerry gave a brief lesson on Articles of the Rule. Abraham won the raffle for the Infant of Prague statue. We ended with fellowship and a good meal from Group 4. Renewed and Confirmed: Live The Treasure! Celebrating 40 Years Of Our OFS Rule We will be celebrating the anniversary of our Rule on two days. On Saturday, June 23, we will hold a retreat, and on Sunday, June 24, we will have our annual picnic and come-and-see. We are inviting all Secular Franciscans from the Region, especially from the Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Gallup areas. We will also be inviting youth from our parishes. All are welcome to these FREE festivities. PLEASE SEE LAST PAGE FOR REGISTRATION FORM ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA SPEAKS The man who is filled with the Holy Spirit speaks in different languages. These different languages are different ways of witnessing to Christ, such as humility, poverty, patience and obedience; we speak in those languages when we reveal in ourselves these virtues to others. Actions speak louder than words; let your words teach and your actions speak. We are full of words but empty of actions, and therefore are cursed by the Lord, since he himself cursed the fig tree when he found no fruit but only leaves. Gregory says: A law is laid upon the preacher to practice what he preaches. It is useless for a man to flaunt his knowledge of the law if he undermines its teaching by his actions... We should speak, then, as the Holy Spirit gives us the gift of speech. Our humble and sincere request to the Spirit for ourselves should be that we may bring the day of Pentecost to fulfillment, insofar as he infuses us with his grace, by using our bodily senses in a perfect manner and by keeping the commandments. Likewise we shall request that we may be filled with a keen sense of sorrow and with fiery tongues for confessing our faith, so that our deserved reward may be to stand up in the blazing splendor of the saints and to look up to the triune God. (From a sermon of St. Anthony, priest) 6
