One that I have always enjoyed singing is a setting by Charles Wood of Psalm 145: 15 & 16, known by the opening words in Latin Oculi Omnium. The eyes of all look to you in hope, and you give them their food in due season. You open wide your hand and fill all things living with your bounteous gift. (APBA) As we begin to think about the Anglicare Christmas Hampers, to which all are invited to contribute during November, Oculi Omnium seems particularly appropriate. Most of us are indeed richly blessed by God s generosity, and willingly give to those less fortunate than ourselves. As you can see another big chunk of scaffolding has come down and we are fast approaching the home straight as far as the organ restoration work goes. Thank you all for your continued patience and understanding. Welcome to all who gather in God s name to worship, pray and reflect on the Journey. The Collect for the day O God, you give light to the blind and comfort to the sorrowing, and in your Son you have given us a High Priest who has offered the true sacrifice for us and yet can sympathise with us in our weakness: hear the cry of your people and lead us home to our true country, where with your Son and the Holy Spirit you live and reign, one God, in glory everlasting. Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know. 4 Hear, and I will speak; I will question you, and you declare to me. 5 I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you; therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes. 10 And the Lord restored the fortunes of Job when he had prayed for his friends; and the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before. 11 Then there came to him all his brothers and sisters and all who had known him before, and they ate bread with him in his house; they showed him sympathy and comforted him for all the evil that the Lord had brought upon him; and each of them gave him a piece of money and a gold ring. 12 The Lord blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning; and he had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand donkeys. 13 He also had seven sons and three daughters. 14 He named the first Jemimah, the second Keziah, and the third Keren-happuch. 15 In all the land there were no women so beautiful as Job s daughters; and their father gave them an inheritance along with their brothers. 16 After this Job lived for one hundred and forty years, and saw his children, and his children s children, four generations. 17 And Job died, old and full of days. Hear the word of the Lord, thanks be to God. Remain seated as the choir sings Psalm I will bless the Lord continually: his praise shall be always in my mouth. 2 Let my soul boast of the Lord: the humble shall hear it and rejoice. 3 O praise the Lord with me: let us exalt his name together. 4 For I sought the Lord s help and he answered: and he freed me from all my fears. 5 Look towards him and be bright with joy: your faces shall not be ashamed. 6 Here is a wretch who cried, and the Lord heard me: and saved me from all my troubles. 7 The angel of the Lord encamps round those who fear him: and delivers them in their need. 8 O taste and see that the Lord is good: happy are they that hide in him! New Testament Reading: Hebrews 7.20b-28 (read by Alison Lockett) 20b Others who became priests took their office without an oath, 21 but this one (Jesus) became a priest with an oath, because of the one who said to him, The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, You are a priest for ever 22 accordingly Jesus has also become the guarantee of a better covenant. 23 Furthermore, the former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office; 24 but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues for ever. 25 Consequently he is able for all time to save those who approach God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. 3

4 26 For it was fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, blameless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. 27 Unlike the other high priests, he has no need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for those of the people; this he did once for all when he offered himself. 28 For the law appoints as high priests those who are subject to weakness, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect for ever. The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark All sing 46 As Jesus and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! 48 Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly, Son of David, have mercy on me! 49 Jesus stood still and said, Call him here. And they called the blind man, saying to him, Take heart; get up, he is calling you. 50 So throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. 51 Then Jesus said to him, What do you want me to do for you? The blind man said to him, My teacher, let me see again. 52 Jesus said to him, Go; your faith has made you well. Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the way. 5 We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son, is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 6 Please stand for the Greeting of Peace We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. Accept and use our offerings for your glory and for the service of your kingdom. Blessed be God for ever. It is right to praise you, faithful God, always and everywhere, for with your only begotten Son and life-giving Spirit, you are the one true God from everlasting to everlasting. At the dawn of time you wrought from nothing a universe of beauty and splendour, bringing light from darkness and order from chaos. You formed us, male and female, in your image, and endowed us with creative power. We turned away from you but you did not abandon us. You called us by name and searched us out, making a covenant of mercy, giving the law, and teaching justice by the prophets. And so we praise you, joining with your faithful people of every time and place, singing the eternal song: 6

7 Choir Sings: Sanctus & Benedictus Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of thy glory: Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. When the fullness of time was come, you sent your Son, to be born of Mary. Bright image of your glory, he learnt obedience to you in all things, even to death on a cross, breaking the power of evil, freeing us from sin, and putting death to flight. You raised him from death, exalting him to glory, and the new day dawned. On the night he was betrayed your Son Jesus Christ shared food with his friends, his companions on the way. While at table he took bread, blessed, and broke it, and giving it to them, said: Take, eat; this is my body. He took a cup of wine, and, giving thanks, he gave it to them, and said, This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. Do this in remembrance of me. Therefore, living God, as we obey his command, we remember his life of obedience to you, his suffering and death, his resurrection and exaltation, and his promise to be with us for ever. With this bread and this cup we celebrate his saving death until he comes. Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Accept, we pray, our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, and send your Holy Spirit upon us and our celebration that all who eat and drink at this table may be strengthened by Christ s body and blood to serve you in the world. As one body and one holy people, may we proclaim the everlasting gospel of Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom, with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory is yours, eternal God, now and for ever. We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. The gifts of God for the people of God. Come let us take this holy sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving. 7

8 Baptised and communicant Christians of all denominations are welcome to receive Holy Communion. Communion will be administered at the nave platform. Please follow the guidance of stewards and servers. If you do not wish to receive Holy Communion, you may like to come forward and receive a blessing (simply bow your head as a signal). Gluten free bread is available; please ask for this from the priest giving communion. Please kneel as the Choir sings: Agnus Dei O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. (x2) O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace. After Communion (please kneel) Let us pray: Bountiful God, at this table you graciously feed us with the bread of life and the cup of eternal salvation. May we who have reached out our hands to receive this sacrament be strengthened in your service; we who have sung your praises tell of your glory and truth in our lives; we who have seen the greatness of your love see you face to face in your kingdom. Most loving God, you send us into the world you love. Give us grace to go thankfully and with courage in the power of your Spirit. Post-Communion Hymn: #779 [tune: Cross of Jesus] Sing my soul Remain standing for the Blessing The peace of God which passes all understanding keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Congratulations: Canon Jenny was commissioned as Area Dean for the City of Adelaide at last Friday s Synod Service. Philip Adams has been appointed Chancellor of the Diocese. The Reverend Wendy Morecroft will be ordained priest in December and continue to serve her title at the Cathedral (she is currently on leave) Rachel Bruerville takes up her appointment as Administrative Assistant (Cathedral Verger) this week. Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Centenary: The moment that ushered in the Armistice, and the end of the First World War, at the 11th hour of the 11th month 1918, will be commemorated on Sunday 11 November The Ode will be recited at both morning services. Following the Choral Eucharist a plaque on the cross in the Memorial Garden will be unveiled and dedicated. The Cathedral bells will then ring a joyful peal, as bells across the world did a hundred years ago. Cathedral Organ and new Target: How exciting to finally see the new organ casework. Ten days ago we got the news that the Budget had been slashed to $1.7 million. There is now a little over $250,000 to find to bring the organ home debt free by Christmas. Can we do one more round of giving? Thank you to Art Event organisers and supporters for Friday night. 11
