3 3 THE RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS Note to Pastors, Deacons, Directors and Team Members: Please read the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults: CONTENTS vi and vii and Page 2, FOREWORD viii and ix. CHRISTIAN INITIATION GENERAL INTRODUCTION xiv xviii. It is vital for you to read the preparatory pages from The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults for each PERIOD before celebrating any of the Minor Rites which are labeled as a STEP. All other numbers refer to the paragraph notations within the Rite itself. This packet can not replace the Rite itself but has been printed as an aide. Rubrics for the rites are written in red. General Parish Preparation for all Minor Rites: Proper discernment is vital. Simple education and the purpose of each rite must be included in the formation and catechetical sessions before each celebration. The Candidates should always be encouraged to invite their family beforehand. Liturgy Preparation: The Pastor, RCIA Director/Coordinator, and Team, along with the Music Director should collaborate in the preparation for the Rite. The use of simple refrains led by the cantor will assist the assembly with fuller participation. The director of music and the organist should have a working copy of the ritual. The hymnody for the Mass should reflect the rite to be celebrated. All music included in this printed copy are samples and suggestions. Please do not overlook the subjective personal pronouns for each specific group (he/she/they) in your edits. This will be extremely helpful to you. The Celebrant should plan to give the assembly simple directions ( Please turn and face the candidates and their sponsor... ) during each part of the ritual so they can be an active part of the celebration. Director/Coordinator: Practice the ritual movement and placement in the Church with the sponsors before the day of the celebration. The team can help with this. Always keep in mind that it is very important that the distinction between the Non-baptized and already baptized candidates be made clear and visible for the gathered assembly. Ask sponsors and candidates to please come a half an hour early to your meeting place so you can briefly give opening directions, even though you have already practiced with the sponsors. The day of: everyone should be wearing name tags for quick and clear identification. There should be Reserved seating in the front of the church for all participants. 3

A. THE RITE OF ACCEPTANCE INTO THE ORDER OF CATECHUMENS (for groups of only non-baptized) Intro. #41-#47 B. WELCOMING THE CANDIDATES: Intro. # (for groups with baptized only) (#416-#432) Prior preparation of all Candidates and sponsors for Step One celebrations A, B, and C. The week before the Rite is to be celebrated the candidates should be asked to reflect on these two questions during the week: When has the cross been evident in your life experience? Reflect on the memory and the journey through it. What do you ask of God s Church? (Tell them their answer becomes a part of the opening of the Rite). The standard answers are in the RCIA, p 292. (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults text) Candidates should be assured that they only have two things to say out loud: The answer to the question: What do you ask of God s Church? And I am to a question asked by the Celebrant during the Rite, and their sponsor will be with them the entire time. Sponsors: Should call their candidate during the week to be supportive and ask if they have formulated a short answer to the second question. The candidates should be told they can write their answer to lower their stress level. The sponsor should know their own replies too. Before Mass: All should be ready five to ten minutes before Mass begins. For all Rites each person should be accompanied by their Sponsors in alphabetical order. For Combined Rites-the Catechumens (alphabetically) with Sponsor are to be are lined up first, then the already baptized Candidates (alphabetically) and Sponsors, in the main entrance of the church. The sponsor should have their right hand on the left shoulder of person they are sponsoring. 4

5 Beginning of Mass: The Opening Hymn, Penitential Rite and the Gloria can be omitted for this Liturgy. Candle bearers and Readers can take their place on the altar before Mass to alleviate a double opening procession. The Cross bearer could stand adjacent to the Celebrant who should be in the sanctuary facing the main entrance. The Director can be at the lectern/cantor stand to use a microphone if necessary. During Mass: The Celebrant/Director should briefly explain to the assembly what will be happening at Mass This morning we are celebrating with men and women who have come forward and asked to become members of the Catholic Church and are making their decision publically. This ritual is... SIGNING OF THE SENSES: The prayers and motions are an expression of the Christian belief that the Cross is the sign and symbol of Jesus death and resurrection. LITURGY OF THE WORD: The readings for Sunday Mass are normally used but can be replaced by suggested ones form the Rite book. (#62) The second symbol of the Rite is expressed in the Gospels as the living Word of God. PRESENTATION OF A BIBLE: It is suitable for those entering the Church to receive a bible. As a group they, and their sponsors, are invited by the Celebrant to the sanctuary. First they can be invited to show a sign of reverence to the Book of the Gospels. It is presented to them by the Celebrant, Deacon or Director and the person can bow, hold it up high, hold the Book to their breast, etc. then return it to who it was presented by. The Catechumens and Candidates should be given a personal bible. This would also be a suitable time to gift them with a cross to wear or for use in their home. All will.remain standing there during the Universal Prayer and so be ready for the Dismissal Rite. UNIVERSAL PRAYER: Use a balance of the Intercessions for the Catechumens and the needs of the Church and world. The concluding prayer is the Prayer Over the Catechumens or Candidates found in the Rite book and is to take place before the recitation of the Creed. DISMISSAL RITE: Beginning on this Sunday at the conclusion of the Universal Prayer the Catechumens and Candidates and their Sponsors are kindly and gently dismissed (#67). This is not to be an option. Simple catechesis is necessary for all to appreciate Dismissal. The assembly could be asked to raise their hands in blessing as the group moves up the aisle. The Director/Team accompanies the Group that will be in the sanctuary and following the Processional Cross will process to the entrance that will lead to their meeting area. Except for Dismissal Option C all future Dismissal Rites at Mass, will take place after Universal Prayer but before the recitation of the Creed. Catechumens should not recite the Creed until the First Scrutiny on the Third Sunday of Lent. Resources are available for Dismissal Prayers corresponding with the Liturgical year and can be used except when specific texts are to be used. Options A and B: Sponsors may stay with the group to the meeting room or return to their seats within the assembly and celebrate Eucharist-then join the group-whatever is decided. The cross bearer returns to the sanctuary after reaching the main door of the church (side aisle). Option C: If for serious reason there is no dismissal the designated prayer should be prayed out loud at every Mass (#67) in which the group is assembled before the Offertory Hymn. They will remain in the church for the Liturgy of the Eucharist and Concluding Rites. If the Catechumens/Candidates attend Mass at different times then Option C prayer should be prayed at every Mass they are present. The community cannot fulfill their role to welcome the Candidates and extend the invitation to the Candidates to join in the life of the parish, if they are not introduced. 5 5

THE RITE OF ACCEPTANCE INTO THE ORDER OF CATECHUMENS (#48 - #68) RECEIVING THE CANDIDATES TO BECOME CATECHUMENS The readers, cantor, psalmist and altar servers can take their place in the sanctuary before Mass. The candidates and sponsors are lined up with the Christian Initia tion team in front of the main entrance. The assembly is asked to turn towards the main door or normally used location for entrance. Celebrant: Will everyone please face the main entrance of the church as we begin. GREETING Celebrant: Dear friends, the Church joyfully welcomes today a person (people) who will be received into the Order of Catechumens. In the months to come he/she will prepare to celebrate the Sacraments of Initiation baptism, confirmation, and holy Eucharist. OPENING DIALOGUE Sponsor: My name is and I am sponsoring I have known him/her for... and he/she is... (VERY BRIEF) Celebrant: What do you ask of God s Church? (First Name) Candidate: (Gives answer.) Celebrant: (Name) I hope that you are able to, or find, etc. (Using words from answers) I welcome you on behalf of this faith community. Repeat as needed. The sponsor than walks the person down the aisle to the front of the altar and turns left (or right) to begin a line of catechumens, and stands with them until all have been presented and greeted. 7

(Haas) CATECHUMEN S FIRST ACCEPTANCE OF THE GOSPEL Celebrant: God gives light to everyone who comes into this world; though unseen, he reveals himself through the works of his hand, so that all people may learn to give thanks to their Creator. You have followed God s light and the way of the Gospel now lies before you. Set your feet firmly on that path and acknowledge the living God, who truly speaks to everyone. Walk in the light of Christ and learn to trust in his wisdom. Commit your lives daily to his care, so that you may come to believe in him with all your heart. This is the way of faith along which Christ will lead you in love toward eternal life. Are you prepared to begin this journey today under the guidance of Christ? Candidate(s): I am. SIGNING OF THE FOREHEAD Celebrant approaches catechumens, and after saying first name(s), begins:,,, Celebrant: + receive the cross on your forehead. It is Christ himself who now strengthens you with this sign of his love. Learn to know and follow him. SIGNING OF THE OTHER SENSES OF THE CATECHUMENS Pairs can move to a more visible place or remain where they are. If there is time during chosen movement the assembly can sing new refrain: Cantor: All: Repeat Sponsors ask catechumen to turn and face them for eye contact. By using the palm of their hand the sponsor will make a cross on the part of the body that is named in the prayer. If there are two as in hands, both should be signed. As many people are sensitive to touch, the cross can be made without actual physical cont. All: Repeat Christ Will Be Your Strength between each signing. Celebrant: (slowly) All sing: Receive the sign of the cross on your ears, That you may hear the voice of the Lord. Christ Will Be Your Strength Receive the sign of the cross on your eyes, That you may see the glory of God. 9

All Sing: Christ Will Be Your Strength (Sponsor should gently take the candidates hands and turn them so palms up) Receive the sign of the cross on your hands, That Christ may be known in the work which you do. All Sing: Christ Will Be Your Strength (Sponsor should kneel down if possible) Receive the sign of the cross on your feet, That you may walk in the way of Christ. Celebrant: (Making a large movement over all as they face the sanctuary) + I sign you with the sign of eternal life in the name of the Father, and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit. All: Amen. (With assembly in a loud voice) Sponsors can congratulate their candidate while the assembly is show their sign of welcome by applauding CONCLUDING PRAYER: Celebrant: Let us pray. Lord, We have signed these catechumens with the sign of Christ s cross. Protect them by its power, so that, faithful to the grace which has begun in them, that they may keep your commandments and come to the glory of rebirth in baptism. We ask this through Christ our Lord. All: Amen. 10

11 11 INVITATION TO THE CELEBRATION OF THE WORD OF GOD Celebrant: And now my dear Catechumen(s) Come share with us at the table of God s Word. Sponsors guide/sit with the catechumens in the reserved pews for Liturgy of the Word. LITURGY OF THE WORD HOMILY PRESENTATION OF A BIBLE (#64, p 29) Catechumens are called by name, and with their sponsor are invited by the Celebrant to the sanctuary to show a sign of reverence to the Book of the Gospels. See Note page 4. Celebrant: Receive the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Individually each is presented with a bible, and a cross to wear or use in their home by the Celebrant or their Sponsor. The group will remain there during the Universal Prayer and be ready for the Dismissal Rite. UNIVERSAL PRAYER: (Prayer of the Faithful) can be edited and replaced for individual parish use (#65, p 29). Please see next page. PROFESSION OF FAITH: Mass continues with the recitation of the Creed and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Catechumens and un-catechized Candidates should not recite the Creed until after the First Scrutiny on the Third Sunday of Lent. Except for Dismissal Option C all future Sunday Masses which include a procession for the Dismissal Rite. Universal Prayer is to take place before the recitation of the Creed. The next page is the Universal Prayer which can be modified for parish use. The Concluding Prayer is the PRAYER OVER THE CATECHUMENS. 11

12 12 UNVIVERSAL PRAYER Celebrant: This/these catechumen(s), who are our brothers and sisters, have already traveled a long road. We rejoice with them in the gentle guidance of God who has brought them to this day. Let us pray that they press onwards, until they come to share fully in our way of life. Deacon/ Commentator: That God our Father many reveal his Christ to them more and more with every passing day, let us pray to the Lord. R. Lord, hear our prayer. That they may undertake with generous hearts and souls whatever God may ask of them, let us pray to the Lord. R. Lord, hear our prayer. That they may have our sincere and unfailing support every step of the way, let us pray to the Lord. R. Lord, hear our prayer. That in due time they may be found worthy to receive the baptism of new birth and renewal in the Holy Spirit, let us pray to the Lord. R. Lord, hear our prayer. Add additional intentions for the Church, whole world, local, and parish community. 12

13 13 PRAYER OVER THE CATECHUMEN(S): Celebrant: God of all creation, We ask you to look favorably on your servant(s) Make him/her/them fervent in spirit, joyful in hope; and always ready to serve your name. Lead him/her Lord, to the baptism of new birth, so that, living a fruitful life in the company of your faithful, he/she may receive the eternal reward that you promise. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. All: Amen. DISMISSAL: (#67, p 31) Dismissal begins on this Sunday. Catechesis for the assembly is necessary, This is the time that our Candidates will pray and reflect on the Sunday Gospel. As they cannot receive the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, they may receive him their hearts through the Holy Word of God. (Option B) Celebrant: (To the assembly) Now our Catechumens are gently and kindly dismissed with our blessing: Celebrant: My dear friends, this community now sends you forth to reflect more deeply upon the Word of God which you have shared with us today. Be assured of our loving support and prayers for you. We look forward to the day when you will share fully in the Lord s Table. The director/team member approaches the altar and receives the Book of the Gospels presented by the Celebrant while assembly sings. Cantor: All: May the Word of God strengthen you, May the Word of God nourish you, May the Word of God comfort you all your life Repeat until all are out of sight. (Walker) 13

14 14 Mass continues and afterward the parish may choose to have a gathering to welcome the catechumens and candidates. This should be announced beforehand. Option C Dismissal (#67) See General Notes Page 5 notes in this booklet for explanation Option C: The pastor should have the Catechumens Please stand from their reserved pews. The Celebrant can use these or other appropriate wording to convey the same message Celebrant: My dear Catechumens although you cannot yet participate fully in the Lord s Eucharist, stay with us as a sign of our hope that all God s Children will eat and drink with the Lord and work with his Spirit to re-create the face of the earth. Catechumens: Amen. After the LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST The normal DISMISSAL OF THE ASSEMBLY is prayed. 14

THE RITE OF ACCEPTANCE INTO THE ORDER OF CATECHUMENS AND THE RITE OF WELCOMING THE CANDIDATES INTO CONTINUING CONVERSION The readers, cantor, psalmist and altar servers can take their place in the sanctuary before Mass. The non-baptized candidates lined up alphabetically with their Sponsors are first, then the already baptized Candidates lined up alphabetically with their Sponsors. The Celebrant/Deacon/Director talks to the assembly about the Rite that is to be celebrated. Celebrant: Will everyone please face the main entrance of the church as we begin. GREETING: Celebrant: Dear friends, the Church joyfully welcomes today an individual(s) who will be received into the Order of Catechumens. In the months to come he/she/they will prepare for initiation into the Christian faith by baptism, confirmation and Eucharist. We also greet those, who already joined with us by baptism, now seek to complete their initiation (and ones who wish to be received into the full communion) into/of the Catholic Church. For each candidate, sponsor(s) will introduce themselves first then introduce the person they are sponsoring. Catechumens (non-baptized) are always first. This is repeated as many times as needed. OPENING DIALOGUE Sponsor: My name is and I am sponsoring I have known him/her for... and he/she is... (VERY BRIEF) Celebrant: What do you ask of God s Church? The sponsor than walks the person down the aisle to the front of the altar and turns left (or right) to begin a line of catechumens, and stands with them until all have been presented and greeted. After each dialogue is completed, the assembly sings as the sponsor guides the candidate to their place. Sponsors are behind the candidate. As each or after the first and last catechumen goes down the aisle the cantor leads the assembly to sing: Cantor: We stand with you, we pray for you, O holy ones of God. All: We stand with you, we pray for you, O holy ones of God. (Haas) Immediately after refrain: Sponsors of the baptized candidates begin. The first Candidate and sponsor pair should approach the sanctuary and move to the opposite direction of the catechumens to leave a space between the pairs to show a visible difference of their status. 17 17 As last pair moves toward the sanctuary the cantor sings refrain once, then assembly sings: Cantor: We stand with, we pray for you, O holy ones of God. CATECHUMENS FIRST ACCEPTANCE OF THE GOSPEL The Celebrant addresses the non-baptized candidates: Celebrant: God is our Creator and in him all living things have their existence. He enlighten our minds, so that we may come to know and worship him. He has sent his faithful witness, Jesus Christ, to announce to us what he has seen and heard, the mysteries of heaven and earth. Since you acknowledge with joy that Christ has come, now is the time to hear his word, so that you may possess eternal life by beginning, in our company, to know God and to love your neighbor. And so I ask:,,, (Name (s) Are you ready, with the help of God, to live this life? Catechumens: I am. (In a loud voice) CANDIDATES DECLARATION OF INTENT Celebrant: Candidates: Candidates, I ask you, those who seek to complete your Christian initiation (and/or) be received into the full communion of the Catholic Church), are you prepared to listen to the apostles instruction, gather with us for prayer, and join us in the love and service of others? SIGNING OF THE OTHER SENSES OF THE CATECHUMENS and CANDIDATES As rehearsed before the ritual- a pair (s) may move to a more visible place or remain where they are. They should face each other. The goal is for the assembly to be able to see all movements and utilize the worship space. The non-baptized and baptized should be visually separated in order to keep their status become confused If there is time during this movement the assembly can sing a new refrain: Cantor: All: Repeat Christ Will Be Your Strength between each signing. 21 21 LITURGY OF THE WORD HOMILY PRESENTATION OF A BIBLE As a group (or by preference Catechumens are called by name), they and their sponsors, are invited by the Celebrant to the sanctuary to show a sign of reverence to the Book of the Gospels, Celebrant: Receive the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Each is presented with a bible, and a cross to wear or use in their home by the Celebrant or their Sponsor. The group will remain there during the Universal Prayer and be ready for the Dismissal Rite. UNIVERSAL PRAYER: (Prayer of the Faithful) can be edited and replaced for individual parish use. (#526, p 301) Please see next page. PROFESSION OF FAITH: Mass continues with the recitation of the Creed and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Catechumens and un-catechized Candidates should not recite the Creed until after the First Scrutiny on the Third Sunday of Lent. Except for Dismissal Option C all future Sunday Masses which include a procession for the Dismissal Rite. Universal Prayer is to take place before the recitation of the Creed. The candidates and sponsors are lined up with the Christian Initia tion team in front of the main entrance. The assembly is asked to turn towards the main door or normally used location for entrance. 33 33 RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS RITE OF SENDING FOR ELECTION Immediately prior to SECOND STEP Please read the notes #106 - #110; # ; #530 - #535 from The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, Repeated from the General Parish Preparation for all Minor Rites: Proper discernment is vital. Simple education and the purpose of each rite must be included in the formation and catechetical sessions before each celebration. A. THE RITE OF SENDING OF CATECHUMENS (for groups of only nonbaptized) #111 - #115 B. COMBINED RITE: SENDING.. (non-baptized and already baptized) # #545 C. SENDING THE CANDIDATES FOR CONTINUING CONVERSION (groups of the already baptized) #439 - #444 IMMEDIATE PREPARATION: Godparent and Sponsors: The Catechumens should be informed that it is their choice at this time to choose other individual, in lieu of their sponsor, or an additional person to be their godparent(s). Most will choose their sponsor. The wording of the rite reflects this as the Rite of Christian Initiation was initially written for only the non-baptized. Catechumens should inform the Pastor and Director of their decision as soon as possible in order to include Godparents in this ritual and the Rite of Election if it is at all possible. Godparents not of the same parish will have to supply the standard Eligibility of Sponsor certificate. Discernment suggestion: A few weeks before the Rite is to be celebrated all candidates could be asked to reflect on these two questions during the week: How have I grown in my faith life and prayer in the past months to prepare for the sacraments of initiation? Have I embraced the true spirit of the Living Word of God and so am ready to express this in worship and living my life in service to others as Jesus taught? 33

34 34 Reflections on their answers could become a part of the Dismissal Reflection. Concerns should be expressed at that time with Candidates themselves, their sponsors, the pastor, the director/team. Before Mass: It should be determined if the group will be in the opening procession or not for this Mass. If they are not they should be seated before Mass begins in the order as instructed: each person should be accompanied by their Sponsors in alphabetical order. For Combined Rites-the Catechumens (alphabetically) with Sponsor are to be are lined up first, then the already baptized Candidates (alphabetically) and Sponsors, in the main entrance of the church. The sponsor should have their right hand on the left shoulder of person they are sponsoring. Director\/Team: Please review the responses and ask all candidates and sponsors to listen well to any questions and answer them in a loud clear voice Beginning of Mass: The Celebrant/Director should briefly explain to the assembly what will be happening at Mass. LITURGY OF THE WORD: The Cycle readings for Sunday Mass are used. HOMILY: This minor ritual is referred to during the Homily and begins immediately after. UNIVERSAL PRAYER: Use a balance of the Intercessions for the Catechumens and the needs of the Church and world (#114, #442, #543). The concluding prayer is the Prayer Over the Catechumens or Candidates found in the Rite book and is to take place before the recitation of the Creed. DISMISSAL RITE: Before or after the Rite of Sending is celebrated, simple instructions for the upcoming diocesan celebration of the Rite of Election and Continuing Conversion of Candidate celebration should be given: The Rite if Election is very similar to the one they will be celebrating with the bishop. The experience of being with the other candidates from throughout the diocese and seating are the most prevalent differences. All hymns, prayers and responses will be in the program that they will receive. Specific instructions of places and times that were given to the directors at meetings or received in mailings should be explained as still needed for the group. 34

From their Reserved Section the Catechumens and their Sponsors/Godparents should be ready to approach the sanctuary when the Celebrant addresses them. LITURGY OF THE WORD HOMILY PRESENTATION OF THE CATECHUMENS After the Homily, the Celebrant/Deacon/Director or a representative of the community, addressing the Celebrant, presents the catechumens, using the following or similar words Reverend Father, these catechumens, whom I now present to you, are beginning their final period of preparation and purification leading to their initiation. They have found strength in God s grace and support in our community s prayers and example. Now they ask that they be recognized for the progress they have made in their spiritual formation and that they receive the assurance of our blessings and prayers as they go forth to the rite of election to be celebrated this Day/Afternoon/evening, (date) By Bishop at the (location) The Celebrant replies: Celebrant: Those who are to be sent to the celebration of election in Christ, please come forward, together with those who will be your godparents. One by one, the catechumens are called by name (the sponsor s names do not have to be announced for this ritual. Each catechumen accompanied by their sponsor/godparent(s), comes forward and stands before the Celebrant. 35
